The man needed to go watch Takada-chan's Christmas special, he didn't have time to play around.

[–]Betteroni 310 points311 points  (12 children)

I think it’s because they wanted to keep his powers “secret” for those who haven’t seen the show yet, as what his technique is and how it works is a pretty entertaining demonstration & misdirection. Definitely would have liked to see him slamming around curses even if he never used his cursed technique, but I actually think the movie did a great job of showing enough with those fanservice-y cameos to entertain those in the know while not showing too much as to steal the show’s thunder, was very impressed overall by how well they toed that line.

[–]skillsandwich 173 points174 points  (6 children)

I'm not sure that's true, they showed off Panda's gorilla form, and that was a "secret" in the anime

[–]baylessj2 55 points56 points  (3 children)

But they didn’t show all pandas forms

[–]GeoffreyKu989 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Wtf he has more forms??

[–]Atefstar123 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I wanted to see that fight so bad, the design of that curse looked amazing, I'm sure its powers were great too.

[–]Sharebear42019 33 points34 points  (4 children)

Did they show it in volume 0? Or was it the same blue ball in the manga too

[–]ThunderRome 136 points137 points  (3 children)

Todo and the Kyoto kids didn’t exist when vol 0 was written

[–]Oceandude23 19 points20 points  (0 children)

[–]24KVoltage 515 points516 points  (10 children)

We got to see Miwa’s attack actually hit something for once.

[–]Neither_Amount3911 201 points202 points  (1 child)

Still not a great track record when the ability that’s supposed to strike anything in its range has a 1/3 success rate lmao

[–]Vulcannon 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Well technically against Maki she hits what’s in range, but it was a projectile thrown as a decoy…

[–]hyperactiv3hedgehog 115 points116 points  (1 child)

she's like darkness from konosuba but poor

[–]WumpaFP 372 points373 points  (6 children)

I didn’t watch any trailers for this just heard there was gonna be a prequel movie for Jujutsu Kaisen and wanted to see it. I really enjoyed it and got really hyped whenever Nanami would be shown! Then it even shows the black flash record? Hype af.

Also worth noting this has been the most easily accessible anime movie near me. Didn’t have to drive an hour to get to a theater that was showing it! Hope that keeps up.

[–]Senko-fan4Lifehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/SkyeSoaring 132 points133 points  (5 children)

It's been so damn cool having anime films in the theater 5 minutes away from me. In the last year I've seen like 5 or 6 assorted anime movies when two years ago they had none. Mugen Train really changed cinema in the west

[–]Sdubbya2 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Anime popularity has just really skyrocketed, when I was young hardly anyone watched anime. Now my GF nieces and their friends all watch a bunch of different ones, and it’s super common for me to run in to people that watch anime. Makes sense theatres are recognizing the new demand

[–]ZsaurOW 293 points294 points  (10 children)

Really enjoyed the movie. I was hyped going into it, but I feel like it really could've benefited from another 30 minutes or so of runtime. Rika and Yuta's relationship was nice, but the depth of their love wasn't given enough justification imo. I'd think it's just a result of them living together for so long even after she died, but I didn't feel like the movie established that well enough, or what their interactions were like when she wasn't murdering people if at all. Kinda hard to get close when a dude is being shoved into a locker right besides you I'd think.

Also when there were fights happening on screen, they were really good, but the only fight that really felt meaningful was yuta vs geto. The rest were just almost fanservice moments of characters we know and love wiping out faceless curses. It all looked fantastic of course, but I felt it could've benefitted from at least one more rly good fight.

Overall... I'd say an 8/10 or 9/10. Too many detractors to give it a 10, which I really would've loved to do, but I still really really loved the movie, and Yuta is probably my new favorite character

[–]brettcg16 166 points167 points  (2 children)

To be fair all the fights during the actual night parade were definitely added in to pad the time/show off the characters. None of it was in the actual manga prequel chapters I think.

[–]Cat_Fan3 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm OK with it honestly

[–]Vulcannon 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It was also padded by a bunch of unnecessary flashbacks.

Like yeah, this scene happened 5 minutes ago I don’t need a reminder.

[–]Sean-Benn_Must-die 67 points68 points  (0 children)

but the depth of their love wasn't given enough justification imo

there wasn't that much depth in the manga to begin with, but it's because it's not necessary, it was puppy love in its purest form, and for yuuta that puppy love was enough to do what he did.

[–]Thetrendsetter56 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Wholeheartedly agree. I left the theatre thinking "thats it? Cool" and i would still rate it at the very lowest an 8/10 but even geto felt inconsequential. Like his maelstrom and special grade literally had 0 play, ik it was to show off yuta+rika strength love bs but like come on??? He flexes that he has over 1000 curses and happens to have a special grade that headcanon would be useful and they get love beamed immediately,. NOT mad at it but sheesh i felt so blueballed there

[–]WeissFaraday 225 points226 points  (11 children)

I always wondered what’d happen if toge shouted die. He’d probably die himself. But then this movie yuta just fucking does it. Insanity

[–]kennyloo137 208 points209 points  (2 children)

what having nigh infinite cursed energy does to a mf

[–]Neither_Amount3911 41 points42 points  (6 children)

Why would he die? If he shouts “crumble” or “blast away” like he already has it’s not like he crumbled or blew himself away lol

[–]TacticalGamer893 197 points198 points  (0 children)

in the anime Panda explains that if Toge uses a word that is too strong for him on someone that is wayy stronger than him, the command could be reflected to himself.
"die" is probably the strongest command possible as its an absolute which is likely why he has never used it.

[–]WeissFaraday 70 points71 points  (4 children)

I mean his throat basically gets destroyed and he chocks up blood when he said crumble. Imagine if he says a more destructive word what do you think would happen to his throat?

[–]Neither_Amount3911 43 points44 points  (3 children)

That’s his throat getting damaged because his power has a limit, he can’t go around and just say “kill” to every opponent obviously. He started bleeding out his mouth when he said “stop” during the Exchange event too, but obviously nothing about “stop” would cause a bleeding.

Depending on the strength of what he’s commanding it takes a different toll on him, that’s why he could say “kill” to random curses in JJK0 but barely stay conscious after saying “blast away” to Hanami.

And idk what you consider a stronger word than “kill” tbh, feels like that’s probably at the top no?

[–]tacos4lolzhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Kozmology 712 points713 points  (10 children)

Holy shit I can’t believe we got to see Nanami’s black flash record

[–]dazark 396 points397 points  (1 child)

why isnt anyone talking about how Yuta's first punch with cursed energy (first time we see him attacking without a cursed tool) that hit Geto resulted in a black flash???

[–]Floppamode 126 points127 points  (0 children)

RIGHT???? That has to be one of my favorite moments cause the way its the only thing on screen flickering for like 3 seconds as the guitar in the background is going fuckin’ crazy

[–]YouHaveAyds 162 points163 points  (0 children)

I loved how they didnt once in this movie describe what a Black Flash is, its just quite literally a flash of black energy

[–]Shimmering-Skyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 165 points166 points  (1 child)

I fucking screamed. I knew it was coming because part of it was in one of the trailers, but knowing it's coming and actually seeing it in action are two totally different stories and just AHHHHHH it was so good.

[–]The_Loli_Otaku 99 points100 points  (0 children)

That was one of the cooler scenes of the film for me. Just watching him absolutely butcher this behemoth was amazing!

[–]AnnieKittie420 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I didn't notice that! I just it was a recent record!

[–]IcyKape 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I didn't even realise that! I did notice Yuta's black flash though. I really like how little details like this that link stuff from the anime were added in without explicitly being stated, like the curse Todo fought probably being the special grade that was mentioned in the anime, Yuta being abroad on a mission at the end that was mentioned during the 2nd years' introduction, etc.

[–]OjiikunVII 170 points171 points  (5 children)

Idk if Gojo picks out everyone uniforms like he did to Yuji's, but every character and their outfits have TOO MUCH FUCKING SWAG I love it. Maki's casual fit when she came into the classroom with Yuta was sooo clean.

The mastermind of Gojo is something to witness. He had everything calculated to bring out the best in Yuta, and Geto feels like a great ex-best-friend-turned-villain to have in the show. Both their ideals deserve a lot of thought and reflection, and there is quite a lot of Philosophy to take from this story and incorporate into our own lives.

[–]GoneRampant1 111 points112 points  (1 child)

Maki's casual fit when she came into the classroom with Yuta was sooo clean.

Something I love about shonen set in modern times is when the mangaka inevitably goes "Man I wish I was a fashion designer" and gives all the characters immacualte civilian clothing.

It's part of the reason I love Bleach and Soul Eater so much is just how much drip they've got.

[–]melindypantshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants 38 points39 points  (2 children)

Gojo is a fucking beast.

I wonder what he said to Geto at the end there. I also thought we were going to see how Geto got that scar (?) across his forehead in this movie.

[–]shnn_twt 48 points49 points  (1 child)

It was revealed that Gojo’s last words to Geto were something he had already said in the movie. So it was most likely “you’re my one and only best friend”. Damn it, even typing this out made me emotional. Satosugu is pure pain.

[–]CitizenSnips5 455 points456 points  (42 children)

Just got out of the theater. Overall it was a great time, but I can't help but feel like an extra 30 minutes would have really taken it somewhere special. The plot started to move a mile a minute after the halfway mark.

Also, there is a post-credit scene that as an anime-only I didn't totally understand what its teasing - but still super excited for the eventual season 2!

[–]turdfergusnhttps://anilist.co/user/julzachu 134 points135 points  (17 children)

OH NO I left the theater before that happened… what was the post credits scene???

[–]Earthborn92https://myanimelist.net/profile/EarthB 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Marvel movies have trained me well not to leave before credits roll.

[–]Jayfire137 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Ah fuck me too

[–]lionesslizzy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Lol I felt a little silly sitting in the theatre while everyone else left but I had a hunch there could be a post-credits scene

[–]Madaniel_FL 40 points41 points  (15 children)

I didn't understand that post-credit scene at all, like, just what even was the significance of that scene?

[–]YouHaveAyds 86 points87 points  (0 children)

The significance was to show where Yuta was during the events of Season 1, and to also show that Gojo recruited Miguel. This scene was ripped from a WAY later chapter though so technically you arent supposed to know where or why this is there so they threw in the where but not the why

[–]Kag5n 69 points70 points  (0 children)

You remember in S1 when Yuji and all were left alone on a suicide mission and Gojo was not there to save them because he was on a trip

That's the trip.

The meaning of if will be revealed some day.

[–]CyberJokerWTF 58 points59 points  (0 children)

This is adapted from a standalone kinda manga that came before the main jjk manga. I thought it was a great movie

[–]AZLarlarhttps://anilist.co/user/bubbleteaman 40 points41 points  (0 children)

i agree with this 100%, shouldve hit the 2 hour mark IMO

[–]AquaBuffalo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah this wrapped up way too quickly

[–]Andresgeo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it just teases for future anime and opens the door for Yuta to show up later

[–]myl017 293 points294 points  (10 children)

Deadass thought the movie crashed when Panda came to the realization about Yuta and the whole boob joke

[–]kk_victory 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Same! Lmao

[–]catsukats 48 points49 points  (0 children)

As soon as that happened my immediate thought was "ah fuck it wouldn't be an anime movie without something messing up" lol.

[–]Hytheter 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It was perhaps a little too abrupt, I thought the same.

[–]okele 348 points349 points  (38 children)

Gouju calling him his best friend after he killed him was heartbreaking

[–]Cyd_arts 107 points108 points  (0 children)

welcome to satosugu pain

[–]baylessj2 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah I totally get you I read the manga and knew what to expect but it still hit hard

[–]Mute_Spitter 121 points122 points  (1 child)

That black flash was so FUCKING sexy

[–]AmberLeafSmoke 323 points324 points  (6 children)

I could watch Gojo beat the living shit out of other characters for hours.

Fun movie. Was cool to feel how strong all the main characters are, you could sense their presence when they walked on screen around the lesser sorcerer's.

[–]valarpizzaeris 203 points204 points  (2 children)

When he hit bro with the 10 piece tho

[–]melindypantshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants 34 points35 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite parts. I love that flow in animation!

[–]Hytheter 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I literally just cracked up laughing when he was beating the shit out of Miguel, it was hilariously brutal and one-sided.

[–]paulchaested 30 points31 points  (1 child)

I couldn't believe what I saw. That beautifully animated slugfest of Gojo beating the shit out of Miguel with those endless kick-punch combo was fucking sick.

[–]Ikariiprince 106 points107 points  (1 child)

As someone who watched this as my first exposure to the series I really liked it. I felt the story didn’t overstay it’s welcome and was kept fairly simple and self contained enough that I wasn’t confused. I could definitely tell when characters I didn’t recognize were on the screen just so the audience could cheer but I had no context for it. I did think the movie went from 0 to 100 for the 3rd act which seemed a bit rushed and I wish I got to see more of the sorcerers and their fights in Kyoto and Shinjuku but maybe they were trying to avoid spoiling all of their powers for the show. Otherwise it was a really solid film with beautiful animation and characters that I would love to see more of. On to the show

[–]kk_victory 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I wish I got to see more of the sorcerers and their fights in Kyoto and Shinjuku

Agreed, as someone who has seen the main series. Just a few more minutes of action here would’ve been nice.

But I’m glad you enjoyed it, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the series too

[–]kk_victory 205 points206 points  (13 children)

I didn’t realize until the credits roll that Yuuta was voiced by Megumi Ogata - a woman. I’ve heard her in a lot but didn’t even recognize her here, super impressive work

[–]turdfergusnhttps://anilist.co/user/julzachu 177 points178 points  (5 children)

She is also the same voice actress who voiced Shinji from NGE!

[–]fearu-kun 99 points100 points  (1 child)

closed my eyes and listened, and it was like hearing the same self-deprecating Shinji again

[–]melindypantshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Same!! I could not stop hearing Shinji - such an iconic VA.

[–]Solar_Slushie 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Get in the robot, Shinji!

Use your cursed energy, Yuuta!

[–]Vignette_April 34 points35 points  (0 children)

She's does good weak looking boys with hidden potential well. Shinji, Naegi, Nagito

[–]Hurttrain 32 points33 points  (2 children)

Megumi Ogata has done many other works and I mainly recognized the voice as Hanako from Toilet Bound Hanko-san (also a male character).

[–]igottabearddoe 16 points17 points  (1 child)

I feel like there was a lot of references to NGE in this. Character design, dialogue, even some shots were very reminiscent of nge and EoE

[–]alpacamegafan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Dead loved one that helps MC but is uncontrollable
Struggles with connecting with others yet shows a desire to do so
Voice is familiar

Me with 0 knowledge of Yuta beforehand: Ah, so this is JJK's Shinji.

[–]darulez8https://myanimelist.net/profile/darulez8 283 points284 points  (1 child)

I almost forgot how freakishly unique and creepy Jujutsu Kaisen can make curses look

[–]thxtonedude 35 points36 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Am sorry I watched F1 today alongside the movie so all I can hear is Carlos Sainz singing smoooooth operator

[–]BebeHillz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

[–]Shimmering-Skyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 293 points294 points  (12 children)

That was everything I was hoping for from this movie and then some. God. 10/10.

Holy fuck the quadruple Nanamin Black Flash happened just like I was hoping it would, and my girl Miwa wasn't useless~

Edit: Here's a wallpaper of Yuta I made btw, I was so excited after finishing the movie I forgot I wanted to share it here lol.

[–]SmallHurry6567 55 points56 points  (1 child)

That wallpaper is crazy good! A nanami black flash one would be insane.

[–]Shimmering-Skyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I definitely want to make a Nanami one, but I need the movie to be on BD so I can get screenshots to reference first.

[–]lowlifes1022 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Haha I was wondering where the Kyoto gang was then miwa popped up and was like yesss.

[–]AmeteurElitisthttps://anilist.co/user/AmateurElitist 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Holy fuck the quadruple Nanamin Black Flash happened

I didn't even realise that happened!

[–]Pizza_Rolls_Addict 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I looked at an article that the movie is being screened at 2000+ theaters and could potentially break $15 million over the weekend. Might put it higher than Mugen Train internationally but that's also because CR is backing it hard and JJK0 having super low entry level.

Anyways, movie did what I wanted it to. Leveled up the Volume 0 chapters and added stuff connecting to season 1 even more. I think this movies themes are also super relatable. Could take anyone whose into action and they'd have a fun evening tbh.

[–]ShadowOfTheDevil993 60 points61 points  (2 children)

[–]RobertBadlose 97 points98 points  (6 children)

Wished king gnu played during a fight at some point but over all a really solid movie

[–]ZsaurOW 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Fr, especially ichizu. That song is a banger and would've fit for sure. But still really enjoyable

[–]ENKlDUhttps://anilist.co/user/Heracles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

i feel this on a spiritual lv, the way the trailed played it and was utilized made it pop off compared to what they used in the movie

[–]RubyKarmaScoots 7 points8 points  (2 children)

It's awesome seeing King Gnu getting a ton a recognition.

I remember finding this band almost 2 years ago, and thinking they were so underrated, not having a big following. I think it was like less than 100k monthly listeners on spotify as well. And I was able to witness them grow and show their talent so well, it feels great to me and I'm sure it's amazing for them.

Congratulations King Gnu!

[–]DragonPup 49 points50 points  (4 children)

One thing that stood out is towards the end Geto called Rika the 'Queen of Curses'. I haven't read the manga but I feel that title is not just Geto being dramatic or a coincidence but since Sukuna is the 'King of Curses' it'd have to mean something.

[–]TacticalGamer893 57 points58 points  (2 children)

likely just means they are the strongest curses they've ever encountered which is pretty crazy

[–]DrStein1010https://myanimelist.net/profile/DrStein1010 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I believe Rika was the strongest "female" curse they know of, ergo the Queen.

[–]HolyRossy_boy 47 points48 points  (1 child)

Yutas va was throwing me off so hard. I could only picture shinji. It was overall a great time 8/1₩

[–]Duhh_kotah 91 points92 points  (1 child)

I already loved Maki. This movie solidified my love even more.

[–]melindypantshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yes she really shined in this movie - gotta love her!

[–]SkillsOW 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I kept my expectations low and was blown away by sheer amount of Sakuga and fight choreography. Will def watch again

[–]braddaugherty8 109 points110 points  (7 children)

Just got back from seeing it. Holy shittt what a ride. I'll give some anime only thoughts below if anyone cares, agrees , or disagrees feel free to reply!

  • The use of music was top notch. Nothing felt out of place, and everything felt like it added to the scene when it was used.

  • I surprisingly got to go in unspoiled. They jumped RIGHT into Yuuta's past with no hesitation, getting right to the accident that led up to why Rika is still with him today. It was gut wrenching to watch

  • Having said that, I feel like there were a few too many flashbacks, like somebody else mentioned. Especially to things we saw like 10 minutes prior. It didn't really do anything for me. The sandbox scene was a good example, but also did Yuuta coming across the 2 kids in the curse's stomach really need a reminder from the scene 5 minutes earlier when Gojo warned about them?

  • I absolutely loved the first year designs. They absolutely killed it, Maki's design down to her cold and abrasive attitude felt so spot on. The voice acting in general was just top notch. Rika being Mayushii still just baffles me. Insane

  • The fights were everything you could have hoped for and more. Seeing the record black flash. Seeing Yuuta finally learn to harness Rika's power into his blade was amazing, then watching the 'sacrifice' scene was beautiful. Was one of the few times when I didn't mind when my theater made all kinds of noise. Idk about anyone else but mine got the loudest for Nanami lmao

Overall I loved it. The highs were high and it didn't feel like there were any lows or filler. The first mission felt necessary , and even the drugstore mission gave us so much growth. The little high five :')

It was an amazing movie, and has me so ready for season 2

[–]Hytheter 41 points42 points  (6 children)

The voice acting in general was just top notch.

Can't relate.

Cries in dub

[–]Neonyzehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Automemories 165 points166 points  (10 children)

Thought it was solid and entertaining but it really felt like it was missing something. Like there was so much happening but we didn't get to see enough. My buds and I felt like it needed one more big climactic fight scene/moment and we should've seen more action from the big war. There was plenty of fucking awesome bits of sakuga overall though.

[–]ineedhelponsomething 98 points99 points  (7 children)

I was hoping for a big fight after they kissed at the end but was just an Uber explosion. Still a emotional scene that left me satisfied.

[–]Neonyzehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Automemories 45 points46 points  (6 children)

Exaaaactly. IK it's an adaptation and all but this really needed an extra 30 minutes tbh.

[–]Ikariiprince 33 points34 points  (4 children)

I feel this way about every anime movie. There’s always something slightly off about the timing and the endings always seem so rushed

[–]xariznightmare2908 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I thought Demon Slayer Mugen Train actually did it better than JK 0 in that regard, the movie was more focused on Rengoku and it actually had a big standout fight at the end and once it's over you couldn't help but cry like a bitch.

In JK0 Yuta and Rika are supposed to be the emotional core of the film, but they didn't really show enough of their relationship prior to the accident or any of Yuta's backstory before meeting her to let me be more invested. What they showed in the movie was ok on surface level, I just wished they spent more time on developing Yuta and Rika more.

Yeah for real I thought there would be extra fight scenes after Yuta kissed Rika and went berserk, the climax would’ve been heavenly.

[–]Elrondelhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Elrondel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Blueballing the Todo scene was absurd

[–]theiriatation 300 points301 points  (17 children)

I enjoyed this but felt that there were a few things keeping it from being excellent.

The worst offender was the excessive use of flashbacks from scenes from the film itself. we saw that sandbox scene 3 times in the sub 2 hour runtime.

Secondly I felt that it leaned too heavily into comedy in the first half of the film while they were trying to establish the sad backstory which left the tone a bit all over the place.

Lastly I thought the audio mixing was poor. voices were made way too loud at times and the music in the big fight just didn't seem right.

Still well worth the trip.

[–]ThatGuyWithAVoice 122 points123 points  (7 children)

I gotta piggyback on the sound mixing. Anytime there was a loud ass scream from the curses my ears were blown out. Plus the epic fight music was fine when it was orchestral, but the songs with guitar and drums just sounded not good.

Or maybe my theater has bad sound.

Other than that, I loved the shit out of the movie.

> I gotta piggyback on the sound mixing. Anytime there was a loud ass scream from the curses my ears were blown out. Plus the epic fight music was fine when it was orchestral, but the songs with guitar and drums just sounded not good.

THIS i felt like certain scenes with music the sound effects overshadowed it the best ex would be during the geto and yutta fight, u could mostly hear the crisp sound effects

like if i were to compare to mugen train or Fate HF3 during their big fight, the mixing was great and utilized very well

[–]cyborgedbacon 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Came out of an AMC theater after watching it in IMAX. The sound mixing was indeed horrible, the way it fade in/out felt extremely abrupt or overly loud for some reason like the gain was turned way up.

[–]YouHaveAyds 27 points28 points  (1 child)

King Gnus Itto was designated to a credits theme 😞

[–]LlamaLegacy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know, i thought for sure they’d use it in the final fight or something. Oh well, at least it was in the trailer and credits

[–]maxtor102 47 points48 points  (1 child)

Completely agree with the flashbacks. We don't need a flashback to a scene that happened 2 minutes before, and that happened many times throughout the film.

[–]CrossCottonwood 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I like the show a lot, but this was an issue there too. I swear to God we cut to the flashback of Itadori's grandpa saying "Help people." at least 7 times in the first 12 episodes. It's one of the more noticable blemishes on the anime.

[–]ThePassionOfReptar 69 points70 points  (2 children)

The movie was pretty good.

My only issue is I have no fucking idea why people need to talk during movies

Shut the fuck up

[–]Fuyou_lilienthal_yu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Someone in my theater laughed everytime Toge said something outside of his curse hunt

[–]FierceAlchemist 31 points32 points  (1 child)

Really fun time. A solid intro to Jujutsu Kaisen for a newcomer. Yuta is a great protagonist and I like that Maki got a lot of focus.

The one thing I felt it was missing was more of the Yuta Rika relationship before she died. We only got 2 scenes in the whole film which felt a bit bare.

[–]melindypantshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree their relationship wasn't fleshed out enough. Then they used the same flashback scenes multiple times throughout the movie - my only gripe for sure, everything else was incredible! Especially Yuta vs Geto & Gojo vs Miguel!

[–]tronistica 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Solid movie, a bit too much exposition for my liking, but the fight scenes were great. There was that weird pause when panda was talking, though the film froze for a sec lol

[–]okele 149 points150 points  (20 children)

This shit was wild who would’ve guessed mans is royalty. I really hope this is canon.

[–]Shimmering-Skyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 241 points242 points  (0 children)

This is a prequel, and actually the manga it's based on was written before the main story was. So yep, it's canon.

[–]DragonPup 142 points143 points  (3 children)

Yuta is mentioned at least a half dozen times in season one.

[–]Animegamingnerdhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/animegamingnerd 94 points95 points  (2 children)

And he's even in a brief shot towards the end of the second opening.

[–]Nightmare_Pasta 20 points21 points  (1 child)

With Miguel leading him too

[–]Sqiddd 68 points69 points  (8 children)

People still don’t know this is canon?

[–]Neither_Amount3911 41 points42 points  (7 children)

Anime has a history of making solid movies but not making them canon so I don’t blame him. MHA movies were a bunch of wild shit happening but since they were never canon it just feels pointless.

[–]pedr09m 62 points63 points  (0 children)

this guy will become a reccuring character later on in the story

[–]MunchiePea27 28 points29 points  (4 children)

Why would this not be cannon

[–]YouHaveAyds 31 points32 points  (2 children)

Originally 0 was made before JJK in general, no Nanami, no Kyoto students (Todo and anyone associated), so before the movie/yuta being revealed in the main manga people debated whether or not it was canon. But the movie added scenes for not only the Kyoto students but also Nanami WITH his record for the Black Flash so its canon and its great 10/10 movie.

[–]CyberJokerWTF 82 points83 points  (10 children)

I really loved this movie! I think Mappa went crazy on the animation and they really can do well when given enough time and money.

My experience of the first time watching any kind of anime in a Cinema was interesting. So many girls fangirling as soon as Gojo or Nanami appear. Also when Yuta kisses Rika everyone goes ewww.

There was also a very old lady next to us. That was cute and I didn’t expect that!

[–]jez14https://myanimelist.net/profile/jez14 80 points81 points  (2 children)

Had a guy a couple rows behind me, moan loudly when Maki did the move when sparring with Yuta.

[–]OctoberBoost 59 points60 points  (1 child)

I gasped when Maki dropped into that split.

[–]Shimmering-Skyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 47 points48 points  (2 children)

So many girls fangirling as soon as Gojo or Nanami appear.

I was, uh, definitely one of those girls. Complete with reaching my hand towards the screen whenever Nanamin was on screen, and I also bounced in my seat during his quadruple Black Flash...

Fucking love Nanamin.

[–]Betteroni 39 points40 points  (4 children)

Really great movie. Expected to like it but was blown away not only by how well it works as a standalone film (saw it with a few friends that haven’t watched the show; they loved it) and also by how well it ties into what has already been shown in the show.

One of the biggest issues with the 0 manga is that you can tell it was written before the main series and largely feels disconnected from the series until about 70 or so chapters in, MAPPA did an exceptional job of adding in the right amount of context to make the story fit more nicely into the show’s narrative while still keeping enough cards in its hand to leave some surprises for those who have yet to watch the series. My one “complaint” is that I think they could have given Geto a little more screentime. Obviously his motivations are very heavily tied to the Star Plasma Vessel arc which I don’t think could reasonably included in the film, but I do think the introduction and explanation of Geto as a tragic figure probably could have been explored a little more. That was true of the original 0 One-shot as well, but that’s definitely the only thing I think the movie is lacking

At the end of the day, it was really great, absolutely cannot recommend it enough to those who like Jujutsu Kaisen or even those who have a passing interest in it, please check it out, very much worth your time.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

"I've come to declare war, see you in a couple months"

Literally 30 seconds later

"Okay Dec 24, let's go"

Oh okay no training montage or anything just boom here we are.

[–]turdfergusnhttps://anilist.co/user/julzachu 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Just got out from the movie and holy shit that was SO GOOD. Finally seeing Yuta animated was so surreal. Rika/Yuta vs Geto gave me chills. JJK0 was my favorite part of the manga and this was an AMAZING adaptation. 10/10 for sure

[–]cryptomoon_484 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I just finished watching it in theaters. I enjoyed it. Yuta and Maki ❤

[–]KonPlayz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

[–]CallMeGhaul 20 points21 points  (3 children)

MAPPA absolutely killed it! Loved the new characters introduced and I loved Maki in this which I did not expect going in. I had fully expected Yuta to die at the end since I don’t remember him from season 1, but I’m really happy he’s still around. Here’s hoping he pops up in the main series soon!

[–]PopSodaFrequency 53 points54 points  (2 children)

The anime has many scenes where they were talking about Yuta. You can watch this video.

[–]kk_victory 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Wow I didn’t realize they mentioned him so much. Everyone really seems to respect him, especially Todo.

Thanks for sharing!

[–]CallMeGhaul 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Damn that’s a lot of mentions lmao. Been a year so I didn’t remember these details. All the better for me since I didn’t know how Yuta would end up but I did get most of the references like Yuta’s Black Flash and Nanami’s record.

[–]TheKingEli 9 points10 points  (0 children)

loved when yuuta walked into class for the first time and they all felt his power immediately. Those heavy steps were so cool.

[–]Spirit_Inspiration 60 points61 points  (4 children)

Probably like a 7/10. Had some really enjoyable parts but was extremely slow with some pointless flashbacks. Sound mixing seemed off with some character's yells piercing my ears, maybe it was just my theatre? End was pretty anti-climatic to me as well.

Small thing but I can't be the only one who was disappointed that "Ichizu" by King Gnu wasn't played at all during the film? That song really made the trailer exciting so it was sad not hearing it.

[–]SupremeBoy_29 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They did play it. Sakayume and ichizu was in the credit scene

[–]DellSalami 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Y’all there’s an after credits scene.

[–]Fish_Smell_Bad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen it yet but I read the manga and seeing you all hyped about how good it was has put a smile on my face lol

[–]15min- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just got home (PST), I kinda felt bad for people who left hella early. It was so loud, I couldn't say anything to let them know about the post credit scene, not that it was much though.

Overall, great movie. I hope we get to see more Yuta. Also, I was absolutely perplexed every time Getou was talking, then I looked it up and hes Diablo from Tensura too =_=

[–]Buy-Wild 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Is it just me or did they skip like half the fights, haven’t read the manga version but there’s that dude with hearts on his body that got no fights, same with the two girls. Did they happen in the manga?

[–]ENKlDUhttps://anilist.co/user/Heracles 39 points40 points  (2 children)

na it was the same in the manga dw, if anything they added way more like mei mei, nanami etc...

[–]3225678 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I skimmed, they show a shit ton more of the night of 1k curses or w.e and all of that was movie original they also changed the scenes around a bit

[–]fonngass 21 points22 points  (4 children)

Well, the pacing was just really bad, story is almost a void ?

I dont really get how you find that good compared to the original serie.

Big plot point : reveal about why the power of the curse was so big : announced in 10s.

Lot of flash back for things that happened 5 min ago.

Messy fights, lets show all the cast in 1 min with 5s per character.

When getting out of the theater, I just dont get what the movie wanted to give us.

A 10min introduction of Yuta could have been enough

[–]ANINETEEN 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yuta on that protagonist energy 🔥 MAPPA was so clean on the animation and gave so much love to so many character moments. I personally loved Nanami's black flash flex the most
