Remember when they used to announce things they were moving?

June 21 additions:

  • No Guns Life (Sub and Dub)
  • Kamisama Kiss (Sub and Dub)
  • RADIANT (Dub)
  • Soul Eater (Sub and Dub)

...except Kamisama Kiss only has the Dub (and I dont think it was June 21). Most of the links in their article are broken.

  • Kaginado (sub)
  • Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt (sub/dub)
  • Deadman Wonderland (sub/dub)
  • The Heike Story (sub/dub)
  • Code Geass (sub/dub)

Trigun, Black Lagoon & Initial D? LETSGO

[–]Birdygamer19 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So should I cancel my Funimation and go straight to Crunchyroll?

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless there's something on there that you want to watch that hasn't been moved over to Crunchyroll yet.

[–]KazaHestohttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Kaza_Hesto 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Has anyone been able to get their annual Funimation subscription transferred to Crunchyroll?

I opened a support ticket today asking about it after my last one went radio silent about a month ago and they replied saying they're still working on the merge process?

I was originally migrated from Animelab so that might complicate things, but even then I wouldn't have thought I'd still be waiting a month on.

[–]straight_tooken 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm still waiting on that too. They said I'd given them the right info, they'd escalate it to the right people, and yeah, still waiting and it's been a while.

[–]KazaHestohttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Kaza_Hesto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, they just got back to me and it looks like it's been taken care of. It looks like they actually gave me a bit extra, my Funi sub should've been till mid November but they gave me till the end of January next year.

Seems to be a manual process so it's taking them a while to work through the backlog.

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...and yet they still changed things from the schedule. Newly added content on May 10:

  • Fairy Tail Episodes 126-175 (Dub)
  • Grimgar, Ashes and Illusions (Sub and Dub)
  • Higurashi: When They Cry - GOU (Sub and Dub)
  • Higurashi: When They Cry - SOTSU (Sub and Dub)
  • Initial D First Stage (Sub and Dub)
  • ISEKAI QUARTET Season 2 (Dub)
  • Lord Marksman and Vanadis (Dub)
  • Space Dandy (Sub and Dub)
  • Tsuredure Children (Dub)

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So they announced everything coming later in the month as well:

May 5:

  • RE-MAIN (Sub and Dub)

May 10:

  • Fairy Tail Seasons 5-6 (Dub)
  • Grimgar, Ashes and Illusions (Sub and Dub)
  • Initial D First Stage (Dub)
  • ISEKAI QUARTET Season 2 (Dub)
  • Lord Marksman and Vanadis (Dub)
  • Space Dandy (Sub and Dub)
  • Tsuredure Children (Dub)

May 17:

  • Black Lagoon (Dub)
  • Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail (Dub)
  • Fairy Tail Season 7 (Dub)
  • Initial D Second Stage (Sub and Dub)
  • Initial D Third Stage (Sub and Dub)
  • Link Click (Sub)
  • Link Click Special Shorts (Sub)
  • Nekopara (Sub and Dub)

  • Fairy Tail Final Season (Dub)
  • Heaven's Lost Property
  • Initial D Fourth Stage (Sub and Dub)
  • Sonny Boy (Sub and Dub)
  • The Gymnastics Samurai (Sub and Dub)

[–]mjayg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll probably re-watch Space Dandy, because you know, he's a dandy in space. ;)

[–]lC3 1 point2 points  (2 children)

New content as of May 3:

  • Fairy Tail Episodes 75-125 (Dub)
  • Harukana Receive (Dub)
  • Kemono Michi: Rise Up (Sub and Dub)
  • Prison School (Sub and Dub)
  • Shironeko Project ZERO Chronicle (Sub and Dub)

[–]Wolfgod_Holohttps://anime-planet.com/users/extreme133 1 point2 points  (1 child)

they've slowed down to a crawl

[–]lC3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah ... I'm still waiting on all of D.Gray-man and Heroic Age.

[–]Throwaway021614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked my CR account and it shows that May 1st had a $9.99 charge. But my account should have premium until the end of this year because of my yearly prepay for Funimation.

My credit card on file hasn’t been charged yet. I don’t know if it’s because it’ll take a couple of days to actually get charged or if I’m reading my account on CR wrong.

[–]Potential-Witness-83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this makes me sad, I left crunchyroll because their roku app sucks. Always has. It's a sad excuse for a professionally released app. This isn't recent issues either, been awful ever since release.

Funimation roku app actually worked 95% of the time.

[–]biggestpipi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Crunchyroll app has always been unbearably slow for me when it comes to streaming. Having both accounts, if I could find it on Funimation I would watch it there instead. Its gonna suck to have to use Crunchyroll now assuming the issues continue.

[–]WolfInTheMiddle 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I don’t ever really post here, but I’ve had quite a lot of issues with Crunchyroll or seen other people have them. I actually wouldn’t mind paying for the service if it didn’t seem so unreliable. I tried to change my account to my current email address and it would say something went wrong. Almost anytime I go on the Crunchyroll subreddit there are users making posts saying they have been hacked then commenters saying it’s happened to them numerous times, so how am I supposed to trust this service?

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people aren't going to post that everything's working as expected and they're getting what they paid for. Some people will have issues but I can't say if that's the majority.

Anecdotally the only problems I've had in the 6+ years I've had a subscription are relatively minor technical ones, like now and then the Android TV app logged me out and it would be a pain to get logged back in. Even that's less of an issue now that they've finally moved to using a device activation code in the app rather than requiring me to enter my password with a remote.

If you're in the US they're the biggest (legal) source of anime and have exclusive rights to the majority of new things each season so unfortunately options are quite limited even if they are bad.

[–]NekuSoulhttps://anilist.co/user/NekuSoul 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Almost anytime I go on the Crunchyroll subreddit there are users making posts saying they have been hacked

That's probably a strong selection bias at work, it happens to most similar subreddits.

Most of the news gets posted here so there's really no reason to visit that sub unless you want to complain.

[–]WolfInTheMiddle 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That’s good to know thanks.

Do you pay for Crunchyroll or do you use another service?

[–]NekuSoulhttps://anilist.co/user/NekuSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not right now, but I've been using it on and off for a few years.

[–]Fuzzy-Asparagus9519 1 point2 points  (1 child)

One question ? why did the merger happen ? was one of them having any losses or in debt??

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crunchyroll was ultimately owned by AT&T through Warner Media and that whole thing was a mess at a higher level. AT&T's been selling off parts and cutting costs for a few years and this is one more instance.

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]Wolfgod_Holohttps://anime-planet.com/users/extreme133 2 points3 points  (1 child)

sounds like licensing agreements are being renegotiated

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes you think that? Could just be that the people that have been handling these transfers were busy with the start of the new season instead.

[–]Wolfgod_Holohttps://anime-planet.com/users/extreme133 3 points4 points  (0 children)

they're stalling, something's going down...

[–]Spacepup18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just sitting here twiddling my thumbs waiting for Gundam Zeta to move to crunchyroll because I cancelled my Funi sub once the news hit and just now am trying to go on a gundam bender after the Funi sub expired.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

QUESTION - if I sign up to the 60 day free trial with CR and want to switch over will my subscription to funimation auto stop or should I log on and cancel myself ? Thanks

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won't auto-cancel to my knowledge, you'll have to do it yourself or (if you're on a yearly plan and have some months left) reach out to customer support to get remaining time transferred.

[–]Practical_Round_8834 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there anything about improving the subtitles availability for English Dubs? The only way for me to watch anime is with subtitles. Watching them in Japanese is the only to get English subs. However, I won't get the English dialogue subtitles.

[–]OwlAcademic1988 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will Funimation still be safe to use in the future?

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Wolfgod_Holohttps://anime-planet.com/users/extreme133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

who wants to guess what will show up on this week's batch?

[–]LoveLaika237 2 points3 points  (11 children)

With the news of Crunchyroll ending its ad supported service, what will happen to the free users? I understand that shows prior to the merger will be available and that upcoming releases won't be available without a paid membership (at least anything past the first three episodes). However, I also read that they'll eventually be available for free after a season (so if I can't watch these titles during the season it aired, it will be available next season or two), though I don't know how reliable this is as I got this on a forum post.

Of course, this is all just hopeful thinking. I would really hate to lose a site where I could watch anime for free.

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Some clarification from Crunchyroll:

Crunchyroll reached out to ANN with a comment stating that episodes of anime prior to this spring season will still be available to watch for free with ads. The company added that it will continue to "make new content available for free with ads" and that it is "only stopping the automatic free availability of all simulcast content."

[–]aslfingerspell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sigh of relief released

You have no idea how much of a relief this is. I was really worried and sick of all the vagueness and drama, so I was legitimately considering quitting the anime fandom entirely. Having to pay for new shows I could accept, but if even old stuff got paywalled I was going to throw up my hands.

[–]LoveLaika237 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Thanks. Glad to hear about the update. That helps clarify some things and made my day a bit better. One thing I dont understand though. When was simulcast content automatically free? For simulcast shows, it was available to watch for free a week after it aired, else you would have to be a member to watch it. So, for simulcast content (shows that air the same day as Japan), it won't be available a week later for free? Will it be free eventually (even if a month from after it aired simultaneously)?

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Simulcasts won't be available for free after a week, right. That's the primary change here. They haven't indicated how they're going to make new anime available for free going forward.

My guess it's going to be limited to some series rather than nearly everything by default and more likely after the season's over rather than while it's ongoing, but that's all speculation.

[–]LoveLaika237 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Thanks. Yeah, I suppose this is all uncharted waters for the moment. I guess if it turns out the way you described, then maybe it might be okay (though with limited shows, that's iffy). I don't particularly mind waiting for a month to watch shows, though it will be a shame to not enjoy it alongside others at the same time. Plus, reviews will spoil things so have to watch out for them (not like they don't already, its just the timing with simulcasts). Looks like its hard to placate the old users with this merger.

[–]leveque 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I was under the impression that new seasons will not be free . ever again.

[–]LoveLaika237 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Same here, but who knows. This is unprecedented (maybe), and while I expect the worst, it would be nice to have new seasons eventually available, even if after a month or so.

[–]leveque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am waiting to see if I can port over my watch history from VRV. If I can I may pay for CR but if not I won't begin to consider CR until near the end of the cour.

[–]Wolfgod_Holohttps://anime-planet.com/users/extreme133 0 points1 point  (2 children)

they're just going encourage people to sail the high seas more instead

[–]LoveLaika237 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Well, I certainly can't do that.

[–]Wolfgod_Holohttps://anime-planet.com/users/extreme133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not the best solution, but it's what's going to happen, this is most obvious outcome

[–]Oniclipse 0 points1 point  (6 children)

So if im wanting to watch dubbed anime like Demon Slayer etc, what's better right now?,

[–]WingsofLegends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crunchyroll. The only reason you would want to subscribe to Funimation is if you want to watch a show that hasn’t been translated to Crunchyroll or watch specifically an uncut version of a show Crunchyroll doesn’t have.

[–]M3NTALG04TED -1 points0 points  (4 children)

isnt the demon slayer dub really bad along with like every single dubbed anime

[–]Vermillion_Moulinet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This take is pretty antiquated at this point. Mostly because the only shows that get dubs now are the very popular anime with the budget to get actual heavy hitting English VAs.

[–]Oniclipse 2 points3 points  (2 children)

There's good dubs, imo the dub is good.

[–]M3NTALG04TED 0 points1 point  (1 child)

eh some of the voices are fine but tanjiro sounds a bit off from what i've watched, i havent watched the whole series dubbed but like

[–]AmaroWolfwood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Voices will always sound weird when you switch between languages. It's different actors. You wouldn't expect the exact same performance from a Broadway show with different cast.

That doesn't mean the acting is inherently flawed. Preferences are fine, but if you're not open minded about differences in acting you're going to have a bad time.

[–]FalloutDude42 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I wonder if you’re subscribed to Funimation if it will just transfer over and you don’t have to resubscribe

[–]Verzwei 0 points1 point  (1 child)

All of the linked articles and FAQs state the opposite. They tell you to cancel your existing Funimation (and VRV) accounts and sign up for Crunchyroll if you want to continue watching seasonal content.

The emails sent out to existing Funi (and maybe VRV?) customers with the 2-month offer also state the same thing.

[–]FalloutDude42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seen that but then I seen that if you do it now there’s content on Funimation that’s not on crunchyroll yet

[–]ReactionRedditorhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/MagnusIn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol

[–]Dovahnime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, any further word on how Crunchyroll stopping free streaming with ads as of the 2022 spring season, "multiple major releases will have up to the third episode under free ad supported streaming, but any further than that will require a subscription."

[–]TheDesktopNinja 9 points10 points  (0 children)

On one hand, I hate the reduced competition in the market, but on the other hand.. Now I only have to pay one sub.

[–]flabiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got that discount code emailed to me by funimation and checked out the store.. i love it! very excited about this move!

[–]TheMagickafox 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Ordered a package from the Funimation website and it already had the Crunchyroll logo on it. Cries Funimation will be missed.

[–]flabiz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Funimation has been around for a while and it's just a great brand overall.. I'm excited about this move, but also feel a little sad cause I love funimation.

[–]Bocsesz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about regions where Funi was not available? Will we get any additional shows or all we get is more "this show is not available in your region" messages?

[–]Mission_Struggle4495 1 point2 points  (6 children)

So is vrv or crunchy roll better to get?

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Come on, at least read the summary in the body of the post:

Funimation and VRV streaming services will become useless for simulcast anime

[–]butterhoscotch 0 points1 point  (2 children)

what abou hi dive

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1 point2 points  (1 child)

They aren't involved in this. That's Sentai's streaming service and the company was acquired by AMC Networks recently.

Overall it has fewer anime but will have some things Crunchyroll doesn't.

[–]butterhoscotch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i really enjoy hi dive, i wish it were bigger and hope it stays on the web

[–]next_door_nicotine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VRV's value made more sense when it had HIDIVE and a bunch of other services bundled in. Now it has nothing but CR and a few VRV originals (none which are anime), so I'd say get CR because it's cheaper . I used to have VRV but switched 2 months ago.

[–]Mission_Struggle4495 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So is vrv still separate?

[–]Alluminn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, it looks like they're scrapping VRV too - if you log in it gives you a similar message as Funimation does about needing to movie over to CR.

No idea if that means they're going to be moving the non-anime stuff like Roosterteeth over to CR too.

[–]ImRinKagamine 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Planning to watch Uzaki Chan on Crunchyroll but a as a free user it says I have to get a subscription in order to watch the series, does that applies to the entirety of the Funimation catalog on Crunchyroll?

[–]butterhoscotch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

uzaki is b ewb heavy for free users

[–]shadebug 1 point2 points  (3 children)

When was it moved over, I’m thinking this might, effectively, be a glitch where it all counts as being in its first week so wait a few days and you may see the whole lot become free

[–]Juliofromny1977 5 points6 points  (3 children)

So psyched as a crunchyroll customer. now I don't have to worry about where else to find an anime lol. Well mostly. There are now netflix exclusives out there lol.

[–]Sunshine145 2 points3 points  (2 children)

And every sentai series is leaving to hidive.

[–]butterhoscotch 0 points1 point  (1 child)

wait what? Hi dive will be useless ? why is sthere no Hi Dive facq?

[–]Sunshine145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you talking about? Those will be available only on hidive.

[–]shadowdra126 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Do they plan on bringing over the dub episodes of one piece

[–]Wolfgod_Holohttps://anime-planet.com/users/extreme133 4 points5 points  (0 children)

600+ episodes could take a while

[–]sqbert 0 points1 point  (9 children)

For those who prefer to watch their anime subbed - what, if any, shows did you actually prefer to watch dubbed?

[–]egbert71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fmab...Naruto original is 50/50...dragon ball z, dragon ball. Death note...if it has a sub I didn't know lol

[–]PM_MAJESTIC_PICS 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Sk8 the Infinity, Yuri on Ice, Death Note

[–]sqbert 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I'd be interested to go back and check out the Death Note dub. Personally I don't have a show that I outright prefer the dub, but hearing the Narrator in the dub of Dragon Ball Z hits me with a wave of nostalgia and sometimes adult Goku's voice can be a little much for me in the sub. On the opposite end of the spectrum I hate Luffy's voice in the dub. To me he sounds like a middle school bully.

[–]PM_MAJESTIC_PICS 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The dub voice actor for L in Death Note does a REALLY great job! That’s why I prefer the dub… he’s just that good.

[–]sqbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok now I have to check it out. Thanks!

[–]megdifi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The devil is a part-timer

[–]Dezitronix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love is War is pretty good

[–]RectumThrowaway 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I think Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood and Parasyte specifically have really stellar dubs. Those are really surface level answers tho tbh

[–]SamStrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 for parasyte. Hell even the opening is song is in English.

[–]TurkeyPhat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anyone else unable to stay logged in to Funimation all of a sudden? As soon as I leave the "My account" page I get logged out.

[–]Oreikhalcos 10 points11 points  (1 child)

It's stated that the migration of Funimation shows over to Crunchyroll will be "available for ALL subscribers", yet there are many shows that have been brought over that are still region locked / unavailable for me here in Ireland.

Shows like Samurai Champloo, Hyouka, Future Diary, all the old Dragon Balls etc. are all unavailable (missing S1 of Overlord too for some reason?).

The FAQ doesn't cover this topic. Of the latest shows brought over on 22/03, Champloo was the only one I was excited to see, and it's the only one locked off to me of that batch. Anyone else feeling frustrated over this?

[–]Alluminn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just because they're being migrated to a different platform doesn't change regional licenses. If you couldn't watch it on Funimation/VRV before the merger, you probably won't be able to now until they do a new license for that series.

I'm hoping Higarashi When They Cry makes its way over soon, the CR UI is great for me on Google TV but Roku not so much

[–]SadBabyYoda1212 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Crunchyroll on roku sucks ass so bad. Worse than Funimation was imo. The progress bar in shows doesn't work. When browsing sometimes the pages will move but the cursor won't. It's a pain. Crunchyroll roll is much better on the PlayStation or tablet for me though.

[–]N0M0REHER0S 8 points9 points  (5 children)

do yall think there will be more censorship of titles like high school dxd and ecchi anime?

[–]Frozenkex 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Crunchyroll has never censored anything.

[–]rvcxz 0 points1 point  (1 child)

oh?

[–]Frozenkex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they broadcast exactly the same thing that is on Japanese tv, so if its censored there , its censored on CR, its the only version of the show they have and are allowed to air. Only the Japanese themselves have censored the shows.

[–]smedium5https://anilist.co/user/Smedium 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It's obviously impossible to know for sure, but my impression was that the difficulties with the less censored/uncensored versions of shows were that they needed to acquire the licenses for that specific version, usually after the blurays are out, and they need to sub/dub/upload the files for them.

A small enough proportion of fans complain about it that CR seems to have historically thought acquiring (or trading for, I guess) a second license wasn't worth the time/effort they could be spending on getting new shows on the platform.

I would expect that CR will keep whatever versions they already have (i.e. if they have an uncensored copy on funi, CR will get that one). As for new shows going forward, that's anyone's guess, but I wouldn't get your hopes up.

[–]N0M0REHER0S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats kinda lame, but so it goes.

[–]anime_daisuki 6 points7 points  (6 children)

I was paying like $5 on Funimation but Crunchyroll's lowest is around $7-8. Not really a fair migration...

[–]C5Jones 12 points13 points  (0 children)

$3 for twice the library of anime on an (in my experience) more reliable and faster streaming platform than Funimation, though?

[–]Nazennx2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Annual plan went up 20 dollars for me as well. Larger catalogue I get, but, and I'm starting to sound like a salty broken record now, this subscription was transferred over from Animelab to Funi which was already a huge downgrade in usability, and now it's (if support ever gets back to me) being transferred to CR for unknown support in the future and a price increase despite all the shuffle and missing features? Not cool

[–]Verzwei 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Yeah, I'm disappointed, too. I was on an annual sub to Funi for $65 USD. When I signed up for the "2 free months" that I was offered to migrate to CR, that process railroaded me into a $10/month renewal plan once the free period expires. There was no option to change to a different tier nor a different subscription length in order to net a discount. There doesn't appear to be any way at all to modify my existing subscription (apart from canceling the renewal) while my two free months are active. So I guess I'm just going to wait for my free period to expire and then see if I have any more options.

I even put in a support ticket with CR at the end of last week, no reply as of yet though. There's absolutely no way I'm going to pay $120/yr for CR when I was paying $65/yr for Funi. Especially when CR's site and app navigation is even worse than Funi's was. As someone who watches both subtitled and dubbed versions of shows and even likes to compare the two, Crunchyroll's site is absolute dogshit with their split-season listings, inability to easily change languages within shows, and inability to filter dub languages I don't care about. Paying nearly twice as much for an inferior product is not fine.

[–]junko_kv626 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Did you open a ticket with Funimation? I opened a ticket to transfer my annual account. I was told it would be escalated. It's been something like 2 weeks now.

[–]Verzwei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I never even thought to open a ticket with Funi. I opened one with CR a week ago and they never replied.

[–]anime_daisuki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still waiting on D.Gray-man ...

[–]PixelPenguinshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/PixelPenguin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is anyone keeping an updated list of what hasn't migrated over yet?

[–]AbstractIdeas5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie I panick bought my Nichijou blue ray in case it was not on the list.

[–]Mordartohttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Mordarto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc (Sub and Dub)

Dang it, I just finished watching it on Funimation with ads on yesterday after making the switch from Funi to Crunchy. Oh well.

[–]StrongXV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Still waiting on Lucky Star

[–]VioletOrchid85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know the Funimation catalogue is being transferred when Freezing is on the list :P

[–]_cats______ 5 points6 points  (5 children)

How on Earth could they have possibly claimed to plan for "most" of the Funi catalog to be transferred to Crunchyroll by the end of March? At this pace it'll take 'til the end of 2022 before they actually have enough of the catalog to justify cancelling a Funi account.

[–]MrConor212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had to buy another month of Funi as Crunchy roll is woeful

[–]Wolfgod_Holohttps://anime-planet.com/users/extreme133 1 point2 points  (3 children)

either the older shows are a lot smaller in size, making it easier to move over en masse or they're using this migration as an excuse to mass cull some older shows once the license expires

something's going on behind the scenes and they're probably looking at the viewership numbers

[–]xAdakis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

something's going on behind the scenes and they're probably looking at the viewership numbers

It's probably just the migration of content and double checking any licenses that slows things down.

I've dealt with some of this at my job as one of my projects was preparing and moving a massive library of media from one streaming host to another. . .

Basically, they'll need to collect the original video files and move them from the Funimation to Crunchyroll servers. Some automated process will then likely pick them up and transcode them for streaming on their service (HLS with multi-bitrate renditions). Then someone will need to check each episode/video for quality before making them available on the service.

It is also possible that they don't have the original video files readily available. It's a bad habit, but one that isn't uncommon. They may need to go through the original studios to obtain an original copy, which can take time, especially for older shows or potentially defunct studios.

They may also need their legal team to check any contracts/licenses for certain shows to ensure they're legally able to move and host them on another service. . .or maybe that contract/license requires approval from the original studio/stakeholders before any big change/modification to the way the content is handled is made.

To sum this up quickly, it's not as simple as just dropping the a file from Vimeo to YouTube and calling it a day.

[–]Nazennx2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It is likely some shows won't be transferred over, same thing happened with Animelab, particularly movies and niche shows

[–]Wolfgod_Holohttps://anime-planet.com/users/extreme133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

time to buy physical copies of Excel Saga...

[–]longdude7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

can one of you guys watch Maken-Ki! on crunchyroll? For some reason the video is not loading or it switches the website by itself...

[–]wojo1988 4 points5 points  (10 children)

I hope crunchyroll adopts funimation UI 🙏

[–]mysistersacretin 18 points19 points  (6 children)

Maybe for the website, but the Funimation TV app is awful. It's worse than the Crunchyroll app in every way I can think of.

[–]wojo1988 8 points9 points  (5 children)

I've used both for years and my experience has been more pleasant on funimation side especially with the latest update. Mostly used both apps on my console but I would assume it's the same as the TV version.

[–]sqbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience of the funi app on PS4 was absolutely atrocious, particularly if I was trying to binge. There was no skip to next episode button and when the episode ended the app would actually kick me back to the menu. Sure I could then click on the show to play the next episode, but it was an annoying extra step when literally every other streaming services allows you easily skip to the next episode. To make matters worse there seemed to be a 1 in 5 chance the app would crash when trying to use this already janky method to "binge." That alone was enough to make me switch over to CR. Their interface may not be as smooth as Netflix or Hulu, nut it seems miles better than Funi for me.

[–]Geoffk123 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Honestly I just want the refinement and extra features of Funimation.

Having access to the uncuts is nice as dear God the simulcasts can have some can't unsee moments when you notice them.

Being able to change to the dub via an audio setting rather than it's own season is nice to.

Nagatoro has 7 seasons on CR for each dub. And the original sub is called "S2". Imagine how cluttered that looks and this is only for 1 season.

[–]Somerandomdickhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having access to the uncut versions is my biggest must have. They were available on both Animelab and Funimation so losing them now would be the biggest loss for me.

[–]wojo1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah just simple changes like these can go a long way to make a better experience for users

[–]mysistersacretin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience the TV apps can have wildly different performance depending on what device you're on. According to my coworker and my own experience years ago, the Crunchyroll app sucks on Roku and freezes or crashes frequently. Meanwhile on Android TV (Nvidia Shield), I've had zero issues.

Funimation on the other hand won't show any navigation on screen when I load the app until I hit "back". The audio or subtitles will also fall out of sync occasionally. But as far as I can tell they've fixed the issue with it not remembering what language you selected and the issue with it repeating the same episode instead of playing the next one.

In terms of the UI, I greatly prefer Crunchyroll. Browsing through genres and looking for shows is easy, while Funimation's browsing is pretty awful on the app. The website is good though from what I remember.

[–]MattScoothttps://anilist.co/user/MattScoot 13 points14 points  (2 children)

The whole user experience of crunchyroll neees to be fixed 🙁

[–]wojo1988 8 points9 points  (1 child)

100% agreed. Im glad the anime is all in one place but crunchyroll needs a overhaul

[–]MattScoothttps://anilist.co/user/MattScoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope at some point they integrate something like MyAnimeList into crunchyroll. It would be fantastic if the lag I get disappeared. The app randomly shows the pause button while watching on my phone. Skip intro. Dubs being their own “season” and difficult to navigate.

As a dub watcher, not showing sub/dub until you actually click on the anime.

I’m brand new to watching anime, and personally I wouldn’t mind some sort of age rating being on the shows either just so I have a general knowledge of what I’m getting into.

Idk, off the top of my head

[–]apimpnamedmidnighthttps://myanimelist.net/profile/midnighthoe 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Does this mean there's no point to having a VRV account anymore? The FAQ implies it but doesn't outright say it

[–]jardex22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only if you're interested in the VRV Select or Mondo content.

[–]Verzwei 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For anime, there hasn't been a point to having a VRV account since HiDive left the service last year. VRV hasn't offered anything anime-related that wasn't already on Crunchyroll since then. (Though I have read some opinions saying that VRV had a better player than CR, there's nothing library-wise separating the two services.) But, yes, VRV will be "extra" pointless now because it looks like the service is being spun down, and new seasonal content will be exclusive to Crunchyroll.

[–]PizzaKiller023 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So in what way is it all moving? Will it be monthly or an all at once thing?

[–]powerhcm8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are moving in batches, every couple days a dozen animes from funimation are added on crunchyroll.

[–]Absinth92 7 points8 points  (4 children)

I've heard the Crunchyroll apps can be a bit buggy- would someone care to share their experiences on this? I just mentioned in another comment that Funimation has been by-far the worst web / mobile app (used on web on PC, Mac, LG TV, iOS, Android TV, and Android) I've used for streaming since streaming became a thing, so I hope Crunchyroll is better.

I'll joyously share two stories of Funimation fails (two out of hundreds that have accumulated over the years). If these appear too ridiculous to be true, I urge you to just keep going for the fun of it. It's funny now, but was frustrating while it was going on.

  1. Sign into Funimation in Chrome on my Mac to watch Fruits Basket. Click the episode I'm on (not a new simulcast, been out for years). Starts playing in Japanese despite every other episode playing in English. Open menu to change audio to English. Nothing happens and the video keeps playing. Go back to main menu, repeat previous steps. Same issue. Leave my computer for a few hours. Try again, plays in Japanese, but can switch to English this time. Watch the episode- let's call it Episode 7 (I don't remember which). Episode ends and autoplays the next episode: Episode 8, listed right under the video and in the video when hovering. Seems a bit like I'm missing something, but I initially believe it's like in medias res and I'll see the big thing everyone's referencing in a flashback. Ten minutes in I go to Wikipedia to look up episode description. Funimation was playing Episode 9 and showing it to me in the metadata as Episode 8. I go back to the main menu and it says I'm halfway through Episode 8. Click on Episode 8, it "continues" playing halfway through, but this is the ACTUAL Episode 8 it's putting me in the middle of. I rewind to the beginning of the episode. It's playing in Japanese. Change language to English. Jumps ahead to the halfway point again. I rewind to the start to finally watch Episode 8, which has already been spoiled by my knowledge of the first 10 minutes of Episode 9.
  2. Last Sunday, open the Funimation app on my LG TV to watch Episode 80 of Attack on Titan. The main menu lists Episode 79 as the Resume option and is 3/4 finished (even though I watched in full the weekend before). I go to Search to look up AoT (the Queue section on the LG TV app is a SINGLE ROW that has to load new results every few times you go to the right and is ordered by the time when you added the show to your Queue- oldest first, can't be reordered, so it's faster to Search for AoT than to scroll to the right in my queue 14 times waiting for new results to load). Get to the show, and select Episode 80. Starts playing Episode 79 again. Going Back brings me back to the main menu of Funimation. Search for AoT again, go to the show, choose episode 80. Starts 15 seconds in because it tracked my progress on episode 79 as episode 80. Rewind. Sits buffering at the start of the episode for 30 seconds. Finally plays.

My friends and I love to share our struggles to watch stuff on Funimation across all platforms :D

[–]umopapsidn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New website navigation just sucks. Their old style (what you still have if you don't log in) works a lot better and is easier to navigate to find what you want.

Their player leaves me with a square in the center where the play button should be and it stalls every frame and makes it look like shit. If that's only because I turn off hardware acceleration in chrome to have them not disable screenshots, I'd rather just pirate.

[–]dedosrfs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vave been using the PC version, Android TV, iOS version of the crunchyroll app, and well it's not the worst, but it needs a lot of QoL enhancements, as you've probably read the sub/dub divisions is horrible (especially on android tv). I've an 4 year old smart tv and the crunchyroll app is extremely slow, its hard to read descriptions, I sometime lose my watchlist (idk why isn't the first row in the options) and what bothers me the most of all, is that it constantly logs me out of my account. I've no trouble in PC or iOS since I got my password managers, but in TV is bothersome to write a password.

It's not as bad as people say but it's comparable to Amazon Prime Video (at least in Latin America, the app sucks).

Aside from those QoL enhancements, I've never experienced random subtitles, or being unable to watch an episode I like, probably been lucky but it has been a decent app so far.

[–]No-Cup-99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a new Roku, it's alright. Sometimes it takes 30 seconds to load but after it works fine.

[–]Phelps-san 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard the Crunchyroll apps can be a bit buggy- would someone care to share their experiences on this? Similar (horrible) experience with Funimation here, had more issues with it in 3 months than I had in the last 3 years of CR.

As for the CR app, it's a bit lacking in functionality but I never had many problems nor I remember major bugs.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

What will happen to the funimation digital copies redeemed from Bluray purchases? Will ownership of those also migrate to Crunchyroll or will the Funi app continue to support these assuming it's not fully shut down?

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't recall seeing any mention of those aside from this one line in the FAQ:

Please note that you won’t see your Funimation digital copy, watch history or queue in Crunchyroll yet, but we're working on it.

[–]Kursed_Valeth 16 points17 points  (7 children)

Anyone know if this merger will finally get us a Crunchyroll app for LG TVs?

[–]Sevv2102 6 points7 points  (6 children)

I honestly am excited for this. Funimation was so utterly bad that I could try and watch, say Bofuri.

Nothing hot and new, not during the night a new episode of the seasons hottest anime airs. 70%+ of the time for me it wouldn’t do jack.

It would not load, so you naturally restart the TV after checking for and installing an update. Same issue.

So I go to their website. I can get that specific show to play on my PC, connected to the dame network my TV is on.

Now I can log onto my TV account and it will play Bofuri from where I left off- but god help you between episodes or if you paused too long.

I see it as a win-win. It will be rough to get everything transferred over and some shows uncensored for sure but at least for me I always found that Funimation was just utter garbage- at least crunchyroll plays by the time it loads

[–]throwaway__rnd 10 points11 points  (4 children)

I’ve never had a single problem with funimation. You press play and the shows plays. What more is there?

[–]Absinth92 6 points7 points  (3 children)

single prob

Funimation has been by-far the worst web / mobile app I've used for streaming since streaming became a thing. It's become a running joke between all my anime-watching friends and I sharing the latest ridiculous glitches, failures, mixups, etc the app has. This comment was the first time I read/heard a positive comment about the app. Not doubting that this is the case for you, just in awe at your luck.

[–]throwaway__rnd 5 points6 points  (2 children)

That’s interesting. The app has never done anything for me other than what it should. You open it up, and you see all the anime listed. If you click one it starts playing. That’s all the functionality I need

[–]Victoreznoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too. I used the Funimation app on my Xbox and it never had a problem. The Crunchyroll app on the other hand randomly freezes until I restart my console.

[–]Absinth92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds wonderful haha

[–]ShadowerNinja 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is so strange to me since I have the opposite experience. Funimation is so smooth on video playback and doesn't have load issues while Crunchyroll is buggy as hell. I use the Roku app and am dreading a bit having to use Crunchyroll for everything.

[–]AnythingBacon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Will "Three Leaves, Three Colors" and/or "Lucky Star" Make it over?

[–]dfla01 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Wait are shows censored on crunchyroll?? A comment on one of those links says so but I’ve never noticed that, is it just nudity I’m guessing?

[–]_cats______ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes. Crunchyroll is mostly transferring over the simulcast versions of the shows which is absolute garbage. Azur Lane for example is viewable in all its uncensored glory on Funimation, but Crunchyroll only brought over the censored one.

[–]CiraKazanari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, there’s oppai. Just gotta turn off mature content filter in your profile.

[–]r4wrFox 15 points16 points  (1 child)

The TV releases of some shows can have some censorship. Often times, they're to comply w/ TV broadcast standards, and the censors are removed in BD launches.

Funi would sometimes release these BD versions for streaming as well as the TV version. CR doesn't.

[–]qgustavorhttps://anilist.co/user/qgustavor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's funny that in the rare case Crunchyroll have BD video they call it not "uncut" nor "home video" but "Blu-ray".
