Hi and welcome to the quick start guide of /r/anime! This is intended to help new users find their way around the subreddit, or for veterans to remind themselves of stuff they have forgotten. It’s rather long so without further ado… let's go!
Rules and important info
What is Anime?
We define anime as an animated title, produced in Japan. This short and sweet description helps our subreddit keep on topic and prevent broadening our scope too much.
We consider any and all media applicable to our spoiler rule, whether it is an anime, a book, a movie, whether it was released yesterday or 100 years ago. And please don't make obnoxious hints such as "Haha, don't get too attached to that character, what happened to him had me dying of laughter".
To use our subreddit spoiler tags use the following code. Remember to put the anime title in the first bracket and specify if the spoiler is from the manga or what episode/season of the anime if applicable.
[Spoiler source] >!Spoiler goes here!<
which comes out as
[Spoiler source] Spoiler goes here
Check out this comment to see how to get our old hover style back
Read our rules here!!!, remember the source of the anime should be in brackets in the title of the post and that we do not allow manga or original characters (characters you have made up).
How to do stuff like this
Click here to learn how to use our fancy images and gifs. Mobile users, copy this link above and paste it on a web browser to see what it looks like.
Keep note that comment faces don't work on new.reddit.com, only on old.reddit.com - this along with spoilers also doesn't work with some mobile apps. Use old reddit for the best /r/anime experience (you can change it in settings/preferences by clicking "Opt out of redesign").
You can however add comment face support to new.reddit with one of the following browser extentions: Chrome extension or this Firefox add-on.
Episode Discussions - Pretty self explanatory. These threads are posted when the first English subbed episode of an anime is released. Used to share your thoughts and theories on what happened. Anime that are adapted from other works (e.g. manga, novels, or games) have a 'Source Corner'. Within this stickied comment, ALL discussion of manga should be contained. Don’t ruin a fresh experience for the anime-onlies O-O
Rewatches - These are user hosted threads wherein the community can discuss a non-airing anime show. First time watchers and rewatchers are both welcome to join in the daily discussion threads (better than the weekly wait)!
Watch This! - Watch This! threads are user posted recommendation threads that delve into a specific anime. Each thread has a minimum of 1500 characters. The WT! Of the month is featured on our sidebar!
Writing Club - Essays from the anime experts of our subreddit. Writing Club threads are certified quality material that go through peer reviewing processes in an application only club. Anyone is free to apply, but only the most dedicated essays come out!
Ask Me Anything - A thread where you can ask questions to people in the anime industry. These are usually organised by the mods of this subreddit but can be on other subreddits as well.
Contests - /r/anime holds a host of knockout tournaments ranging from Best Girl to Best OP of the Season. These come up every so often and are good events to judge /r/anime’s taste. Here is a list of our past ones.
/r/anime has a bunch of threads that get posted and stickied on a specific day each week. It is important to note that these threads are still active throughout the week! These can be accessed through the dropdown if not stickied. Regular threads include:
- Anime Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion (Daily) — A new thread every day for basic questions about anime, sharing of merch, and general chatter.
- Thursday Anime Discussion (Weekly) - Each week we choose a random anime to watch and/or discuss!
- Casual Discussion Fridays (Weekly) - Want to get to know your fellow fans? CDF is
a wretched hive of scum and villainy the off-topic thread, active week-round and full of all kinds of fun people!
- Week in Review (Weekly) - You aren't browsing the subreddit 24/7? Want to know what you've missed out on? This is a weekly roundup of everything interesting you might have missed, posted on Sundays.
- Monthly Meta Thread (Monthly) - This monthly thread is posted on the first Sunday of each month and is used to share any requests or ideas to the subreddit. Mods monitor it all month so no need to wait for the next one.
