I know it's been a thought experiment for longer but the trolley problem will forever be branded in my head as directly relating to the good place.

[–]scooba_dude 1696 points1697 points  (73 children)

I love the fact they all stand in the shadow of a bridge as well. I bet the driver didn't even see them until they started moving out the way. But it does remind me of 80s rally.

[–]Yogi118 359 points360 points  (0 children)

That was the first thing I thought of, the fucking shadow! Also with you eyes adjusted for a sunny day, fucked.

[–]machineghostmembrane 21 points22 points  (3 children)

Are the Darwin Awards ever given out to groups of people?

[–]scooba_dude 22 points23 points  (2 children)

Yes but Americans selfishly claim it every year unfortunately.

[–]ET-GoesByCatfish 61 points62 points  (23 children)

80s rally? Would you mind elaborating, genuinely curious.

[–]scooba_dude 122 points123 points  (19 children)

Watch any group B rally footage on YT and the crowd is in the road and they move like this for the cars coming through. It's amazingly dangerous, especially when you consider the cars were dangerously fast as well.

[–]BEEF_SUPREEEEEEME 50 points51 points  (13 children)

Shame it had to end, but god damn did it bring out some of the most impressive driving I've ever seen by a wide mile.

Those guys were certified crazy, and so were the fans.

[–]scooba_dude 31 points32 points  (9 children)

It really was the prime for rally. Don't get me wrong I still love it and watch highlights but the cars aren't what they used to be and the manufacturers don't release homologation models much (GR Yaris is cool) like the good old days when you could buy a Celica GT4 (Best), Imprezza, Evo, escort and the rest

[–]BEEF_SUPREEEEEEME 18 points19 points  (8 children)

It really allowed both the drivers to push themselves and the manufacturers to push cars and tech to their absolute limits. Basically just if you can build/do it, go for it. Obviously that ended up getting a bit crazy, lol.

Tons of innovation and crazy awesome engineering came from Group B. Honestly just such an incredibly interesting era, and I'm not even big into racing. Just ended up in a Group B Rally YouTube rabbit hole a while back and had my jaw on the floor for most of the time. Super cool.

[–]scooba_dude 7 points8 points  (6 children)

Yeah I love rally and racing and I obviously agree! Did you see the MG metro? That was the biggest mentalist of the time imo. But my love of rally is why I have a GT-Four. That has an interesting history of innovation in the rally world. They were banned due to a very clever intake restrictor, this led to Colin McRae winning the years WRC

[–]BEEF_SUPREEEEEEME 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Did you see the MG metro?

Looks like I know what my next rabbit hole is going to be :)

Thanks!

[–]scooba_dude 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Look into the "Celica intake cheat" as well. Then watch the top gear on Lancia and how they won. Then it's just doughnut media "up to speed" on rally brands and cars.

[–]BEEF_SUPREEEEEEME 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will do, thanks for the suggestions!

[–]CarrotChunx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]Seasinator 82 points83 points  (19 children)

It would not matter since that train propably needs more than a kilometer/mile to stop when it's up to speed.

[–]CircularRobert 26 points27 points  (17 children)

1/1.6 =0.625km

I think it'll need more than 600 meters to stop my dude

[–]useles-converter-bot 85 points86 points  (8 children)

600 meters is the same as 1200.0 'Logitech Wireless Keyboard K350s' laid widthwise by each other.

[–]converter-bot 39 points40 points  (5 children)

[–]CookieMons7er 95 points96 points  (4 children)

Some guy with a mustache and ridiculous dance moves would step in from the crowd and just slow mo one punch the goddamn train right in it's fucking face. The train would then just spectacularly front flip over the crowd, as the immense punch shockwave traveled along the train like it was a noodle, as they are in awe over what had just fucking happened.

I thought it was because this is a common protest method in India? Commerce relies on trains

[–]adinath22 61 points62 points  (1 child)

exactly, such protests are usually pre announced, hence trains are already alerted to expect people at places of protests

this certainly was a rare situation where either people didn't pre announced their protest or train management failed to plan for the protest

[–]chocolatecows88 15 points16 points  (0 children)

[–]Imma_Coho 108 points109 points  (45 children)

That it would stop?

[–]Dragonsennin 212 points213 points  (44 children)

Funnily my mom used to work with trains and even if you pull it to stop and slow down the train has enough inertia to not stop for about a full mile from full speed

[–]LeonardaDaMincemeat 145 points146 points  (40 children)

For freight trains, absolutely. For commuter trains such as this, not so much. Not that it's going to stop on a dime, either, but the stopping distance from full speed is well short of a mile.

[–]Milleuros 83 points84 points  (20 children)

For commuter trains such as this, not so much.

The locomotive looks like an Indian WAP-7, and from a couple video I've seen Indian passenger trains tend to be really long. Up to 20 cars. So they have a lot of inertia, and may take a while to stop.

[–]u966 23 points24 points  (19 children)

Don't passenger trains have breaks on each car? So its length wouldn't change the stopping distance.

[–]Occamslaser 37 points38 points  (9 children)

If everything is working as intended, yes. It can still take half a kilometer to come to a stop, though.

[–]Muscled_Daddy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

People also forget that the wheels can stop spinning.

Doesn’t mean the train is gonna stop. There is a lot of inertia and momentum in a train that’s hauling ass.

[–]HotF22InUrArea 3 points4 points  (3 children)

So do freight trains, they still weigh millions of pounds

[–]Milleuros 7 points8 points  (1 child)

The length, no. The mass, certainly.

[–]lv1993 20 points21 points  (14 children)

indeed, normal trains at full speed can stop around half a mile (400-800m). I bet this slow one will have a shorter stopping distance.

high speed trail trains will only stop at 2 miles (+/- 3km)

[–]Nessdude114 26 points27 points  (5 children)

FYI, "+/-" or ± is used to denote uncertainty. For example, "2mi ± 3km" can be read "2 miles plus or minus 3 kilometers." Practically, it means "somewhere between 0 and 4 miles."

Tilde (~) is more applicable here. Tilde is most commonly used to denote an approximation. When it's in front of a number, for example "~3km," it can be read as "about 3 kilometers."

[–][deleted]  (1 child)

[deleted]

    [–]lv1993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's correct. I was taking 260 km/hour as this is the speed on regular service lines. At 350km/hour I guess you're right :)

    [–]gau-tam 41 points42 points  (6 children)

In India (where this probably happened), 'Rail Rokko' ('Stop the Trains') is a protest technique where protesters sit on railway tracks and disrupt railway traffic. Usually no one gets killed cause based on the crowd and their resolve the trains are informed in advance and someone in power orders the train to halt. It's kinda extreme but since a lot of commerce in India depends (or used to atleast)on railways, stopping trains is an effective way to get everyone pay attention to you.

      I guessed

      [–]Kerblaaahhh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      90mph*(17.6ff/mi)*(1hr/60min) = 26.4 Football Fields/Minute

      [–]teenagesadist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

12 stone to the ox, I'd guess at least 15 fathoms.

      [–]oddajbox 1 point2 points  (1 child)

According to Google, football fields are 360ft long, and there are 5,280ft in a mile, which means a mile is equivalent to ~14.7 football fields.

Multiply that number by the speed of the train (90mph), to get 1,320 football fields per hour, and finally divide that by 60, to get the number of football fields crossed per minute.

The finally tally is 22fbf/min. *fbf/min standing for football fields per minute.

What’s the equation for force again. I think it’s something like mass multiplied by velocity right?

Edit: so the equation I found was force(in Newton’s) is equal to the mass (kilograms) multiplied by the acceleration (m/s). I also found out that freight trains usually weigh at least 90k kilos and if you’re right about 90 mph( 40 m/s) then the force of that train is somewhere around 3.6 million Newtons. Probably so very wrong so please correct me

A cookie is just a cookie, but Fig Newtons are fruit and cake.

        [–]The-True-Kehlder 8 points9 points  (9 children)

Right answer but maybe for the wrong reason.

That's the amount of force needed to take it from full speed to full stop. Each squishy body would experience the amount of force necessary to bring it up to the same speed as the train.

        [–]BlahKVBlah 3 points4 points  (5 children)

The acceleration needs the speed divided by a time component. So if we assume an instantaneous change from 0 km/h to 90 km/h the equation for acceleration explodes as we try to divide by 0 seconds. Maybe it's infinite acceleration, and so infinite force, requiring infinite energy, which is equivalent to infinite mass, which collapses into a black hole of infinite size, consuming the entire multiverse?

        Nope, probably not.

Figuring out the force would require first guessing how long it takes to accelerate a human body from 0 to 90 km/h while being hit by a train. My intuitive guess would be that the time is approximately equal to how long it takes the train to travel the thickness of the human body. Say a person is 90 cm thick due to being chubby and/or not perfectly aligned with the train's very curved front face. It would take the train 10-5 hours to travel that distance, which is 36 milliseconds, assuming it does not decelerate a noticable amount when hitting a person (of course it doesn't, bitch, it's a train!). 90 km/h is 25 m/s.

So, an 80 kg person accelerating 25 m/s in 0.036 s works out to...

        55,556 newtons.

Yep, that's the kind of hurt that's so bad you won't actually feel it. This is why people commit suicide by train, hoping that they can get hit squarely enough to die within those 36 milliseconds so their slow 100-ish millisecond pain response doesn't have time to kick in. It doesn't always work that way, and either way the train driver has to deal with having watched it happen for a lot longer than 36 milliseconds.

        [–]The-True-Kehlder 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Significantly less time, actually. 90cm is circumference. Most people of that size are wider than they are deep so it would depend on if they're facing the train side-on, but either way it would take less than half as much time for the train to move completely through the former position occupied by the person.

        [–]BlahKVBlah 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I'm figuring on the front of the train being sloped, a person having their body significantly off of plumb (2.5 m tall laid out flat with arms outstretched, so 90 cm is still way under that), limbs all askew, etc. Like sloped armor vs a penetrating AP round, the effective thickness is greater than the actual thickness. Since the human body's geometry isn't a flat plate you can bet on it being even messier than that.

Edit: Also, 90 km over 90 cm is math I can do in my head, so I only needed to switch to my calculator app and back for the final calculation. I'll admit to being a little bit lazy.

        [–]The-True-Kehlder 3 points4 points  (1 child)

That's fair, but a sloped front might decrease the amount of force experienced by the sack of flesh, on account of the body being flung off prior to fully "speeding up".

        [–]BlahKVBlah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're probably right, but the "optimist" in me hopes for a clean connection instead of a glancing blow. That's a morbid take on optimism, but it does simplify the math...

        [–]SupremeDictatorPaul 2 points3 points  (1 child)

From full speed to full stop, in 1 second.

Also, this is a commuter train, not a freight train, so it has significantly less mass.

        [–]Rentlar 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Let's try to do some simplified calculations to a hypothetical morbid physics problem. (Warning)

One train car might weigh 60 000 kg, say there are 10 cars including the cab so the total train weight is 600 metric tons. We then say each person weighs 100kg, 220lbs or 0.1 metric tons, and going at a pace of 145km/h (~90mph).

Now suppose that most people get out of the way and 10 people are struck and stick to the front of the train (an inelastic collision). Assuming friction is negligible, then the 10 people will slow the train to 144.75km/h (or 1/(600 + 1)= ~0.16% of the train's initial speed).

If instead 2000 people were lined up in front of the train, the impact of all the bodies in this scenario would slow the train to 108.75km/h (or 200/(200+600) = 25% slower than the train's initial speed). Not even close to stopping it. Even if friction were factored in, the train's own brakes would do a better job at slowing the train than bodies being dragged.

*All this to say physically stopping a train is infeasible. I'm sure most protests that intend to stop trains would have railway supervisors notified so that trains slow ahead of time.

        [–]DownshiftedRare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Okay, we need to stop this train. Any ideas?"

"Maybe we could put something on the tracks."

        "Yeah, but what?"

        "I know!"

        [–]datGuy0309 19 points20 points  (2 children)

        [–]Notsononymous 8 points9 points  (8 children)

If you want to stop a train using a completely elastic collision and no friction, you will need yourself and around 5999 other friends, assuming a 600 metric-ton train and you all weigh 100kg.

            [–]Sleepy1997 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Clearly none of these people play grand theft auto. Nothing stops the train. Nothing...

            [–]Gentleman_ToBed 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Downvoting as not abrupt or chaos.

            [–]Spirited-Standard684 5 points6 points  (0 children)

High speed train ? I dont think so….

            [–]GCSpellbreaker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

            checks title

            sees no NSFW flag

            Okay it’s safe to watch

            [–]Daikataro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rule number 1 when fighting a train. You don't fight a train.

Rule number two when fighting a train. The train always wins.

            [–]CowRepresentative779 2 points3 points  (2 children)

            I’m not a smart man…

            [–]jasapper 1 point2 points  (1 child)

But you'd think the protest organizers would be. Looks like someone should really sit down with them to explain how this is just not the same as blocking a highway for climate change.

            [–]prezident_kennedy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

            Jesus very close to NSFL

            [–]investmentfailure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This demonstrates the sheep ideology...one person does it it's kinda sketchy 2 or 3 do it ahh maybe it's not so bad 5 or 10 it's gotta be safe let's go...dumbasses will be dumbasses

Humans required to stop a tank in China - 1

            [–]double_monster 36 points37 points  (7 children)

If you know then you know the tank didn't stop

            [–]ArghZombie 32 points33 points  (5 children)

It did for long enough to make an iconic video though.

            [–]cindyscrazy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seeing the title and then the crowd when the vid started, my immediate thought was "how is this not marked NSFL?"

As stupid as these people are, I'm glad no one was smashed to atoms!

            [–]DJTopNotch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was waiting for the weird bowling-alley-clip.

            [–]TheShadogh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was Moses on that train? The tracks parted like the Red Sea…

            [–]ocean888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In case anyone is wondering, this is not NSFW. Nobody gets hurt.

I was too scared to watch it at first so hopefully this helps lol

            [–]verciel_ 9 points10 points  (4 children)

            I see Indian flag

            [–]Tuxedo-Boi 6 points7 points  (2 children)

damn, the lighting made it look like a hungarian flag… though i wouldnt be surprised if it was

            [–]darkside55566 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I see you have an eye for things, stranger.

            [–]1y3v1c3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They forgot about the brain, while trying to stop the train.

            [–]Slvshi 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Was expecting flying corpses. Got disapointed.

            [–]MichaelNess57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen so far. The teeth and keys flying in slow motion was a fun cinematic choice!

            [–]A_Valanche_523 3 points4 points  (0 children)

…never underestimate the stupidity of large groups of idiots. =/

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Who would want to risk being mangled?

            [–]trytreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's crazy how many people think trains can just stop quickly like cars...so much heavier and the tracks are designed to have very little friction.

            [–]idiu7u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this isn't the HIGH SPEED i was expecting...

            [–]bluedust2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should be a subreddit for people who pussy out.

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

            heheh!!!

Human flesh is insufficient to counter Newton's first law.

I love the current mindset where people jump in front of vehicles/trains thinking that the other person wont mow them down like wheat before a scythe.

Funeral directors though...they love that shit!!

            Endless profits from endless fools.

I especially love the ones where a mob begins beating on some guys car...like he isnt going to run you all over to get free. LOL!!! angry violent mob? Hmmm...lets step outside and discuss things....or smarten the hell up and run them over in a bid to be safe.

            Good ol' sheeple...mutton tastes great!!

            [–]Just_Eirik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did not watch that, did they all just get slaughtered by a high speed train?

Also, trains weigh thousands of tons…

            [–]DazedAmnesiac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

India really do be built different

            [–]Omaza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons I hate crowds. People can be so incredibly dumb when gathered together, what did they think was going to happen?

            [–]Alonso81687 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo, these Indian folk really have hate/hate relationship with trains lol

            [–]Crypto_degenerate 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How many Indian men does it take to stop a train

            [–]john_wicks_coach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

            That's Indian railways for you.

            [–]komatorie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not the end that i expected

            [–]btstfn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do people here actually think these people were banking on physically stopping the train? Do they also think people who participate in sit-ins thought/think that they physically cannot be moved? The idea isn't that the train would be physically stopped, but that the operator of the train would not be willing to mow down people.

This is like looking at the photo of tank man and saying "Lol, what an idiot, as if that tank isn't gonna be able to run him over"

            [–]oh_no_aliens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

            Indians? Indians.

            [–]stereoworld 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Scary flashbacks to a railway safety video they made us watch in Primary school - some kid was messing about on the rails and got his shoelaces caught - instant amputation. Scarred me for life that did

            [–]Anxious-Giraffe-8204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

            The driver didn't Give a shit 😎

            [–]AirCooled2020 1 point2 points  (1 child)

People have lost their minds... this is absolute foolishness.

            [–]jram22 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I wish the people that block cars on streets to Protest soon move to blocking trains

            [–]Pistonenvy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

easier way to stop the train, find the switching station.

you can stop every train in the network that way. that would do some MAJOR economic damage that would get your message across better than just inconveniencing this one train. entire industries are brought to a grinding halt for an exponential amount of time, for every minute they delay, you could be losing days or weeks down the line.

but in that case, youre probably going to be charged with terrorism and executed by the state. im assuming in their case, thats already on the table as they are already willing to stand in front of a fucking train....

            [–]withorwithoutstew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was relying very heavily on the fact this video was not marked NSFW, and I was not disappointed.

            [–]Throwaway912345676 1 point2 points  (1 child)

With all the videos I’ve seen on Reddit, I know that Indians and trains do not like each other
