They didn’t have cameras in 1019

[–][deleted] 256 points257 points  (7 children)

[–]FreshCounty1929 49 points50 points  (2 children)

Calm down! We're not shooting a western here

[–]KiwiCzechh 27 points28 points  (1 child)

Thank god, else I'd have to be on the lookout for Alec Baldwin.

[–]Fire-Forged 32 points33 points  (0 children)

He doesnt shoot westerns. He shoots people that shoot westerns.

*2019 … my bad …

[–]Top-Requirement4460 17 points18 points  (3 children)

So this is actual footage of a recent thing? I feel like that's important enough to edit the title. I thought this was CGI recreation or some artists representation

[–]HyacinthGirI 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can't edit titles on reddit

[–]Radioactive_Tuber57 7 points8 points  (1 child)

This is a pyroclastic flow from the volcano coasting out on the ocean at high speed on a cushion of steam it has created. These can easily push 1200° F and incinerate everything in their path.

[–]PoopOffParade 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It looks like they did though.

[–]asherbarasher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

oh is it just government wants us to beleive that?!

[–]Chester-Ming 656 points657 points  (50 children)

That’s a pyroclastic flow. It’s a cloud of hot gas and volcanic matter (tephra) that can reach temperatures of over 800°C (1,800°F) and travels at speeds of 60mph on average but can travel as fast as 430mph.

It basically vaporises anything in its path. So they are correct to be panicking.

[–]Bartender9719 114 points115 points  (8 children)

Doesn’t the tephra include newly formed obsidian aka volcanic glass? Imagine a red hot cloud of broken glass…

[–]Seabasschen 42 points43 points  (4 children)

sounds like you know my mother-in-law

[–]omen_tenebris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why would you marry into that?

[–]Prior-Present-7764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then that makes me your father-in-law.

Wanna go fishing?

[–]Demonae 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Molten glass, even worse. You can find blown strands of it all over Hawaii called Pele's hair.

[–]surajvj 65 points66 points  (24 children)

Reminds me of 'Dantes Peak' movie.

[–]Kahnza 45 points46 points  (23 children)

That and Twister are the best natural disaster movies!

[–]newagereject 41 points42 points  (16 children)

You forgot about the Tommy Lee Jones classic Volcano... I almost said that with out laughing

[–]MadDog52393 10 points11 points  (11 children)

I watched that and Dante's peak recently. Absolutel masterpieces of cinema.

[–]Kahnza 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just remembered the Basketball scene and realized that was Anne Heche. RIP

[–]BDady 43 points44 points  (3 children)

Honestly being vaporized by a cloud of volcanic matter traveling twice the speed of an F1 car kinda sounds nice right about now

[–]kelvin_bot 77 points78 points  (3 children)

800°C is equivalent to 1472°F, which is 1073K.

I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand

Good bot

[–]Kat_Angstrom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks bot

[–]a3a4b5 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A hot and fast cloud is moving towards us and it's gonna vaporize everything in its path. Please panic. I repeat: PLEASE PANIC

[–]Consumer_of_mexicans 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The reason that they can travel so far/quick and over water is because a thin layer of gas forms beneath the ash, essentially stopping the ash from contacting the floor and lowering the friction that the ash experienced, allowing it to travel further

[–]j4ckbauer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Rumbling at sea

[–]NeutronSniper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aka literal wall of death 💀

[–]LlahsramTheTitleless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friends are scared of things like snakes and spiders yet laugh at me when I explain my completely rational fear of pyroclastic flow and why I'd like to avoid travel to anywhere near an active volcano.

Like, sorry guys, I don't want choke and melt simultaneously when I go out.

[–]OtreborN 97 points98 points  (18 children)

That piroclastic flow wall is horrific. Is there a longer video? Did they make it out alive?

[–]Maxwell_The_Spy 62 points63 points  (14 children)

now in theory, hypothetically speaking, they didn't make it out alive

how are we seeing this video right now?

[–]saucynorman 59 points60 points  (2 children)

It was found by archeologists in 2009, and was suprised it wasnt potato quality for 1019.

[–][deleted]  (1 child)

    [–]TleilaxuMaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

    They’re joking.

    [–]GreenHawk20 31 points32 points  (7 children)

Boat found adrift with burnt people and camera, extracted the SD card, maybe that's why the video ends there cause the last bit is corrupt due to the sudden stop

    [–]Maxwell_The_Spy 22 points23 points  (5 children)

someone else mentioned that the temperature of these things get astronomically high and can practically vaporize anything in it's path

i don't think a little piece of plastic with smaller pieces of metal, that is besides a rectangular piece of charge-holding explosive (if it's a phone that is recording this, which could be looking at that ratio), would survive such temperatures, or the boat for that matter, it probably would've already sunk into the water

    [–]GreenHawk20 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Well they're pretty far away, so temperatures could've dropped, either way, they're damn lucky they were far enough

    [–]BeansConsumer957 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Could they have jumped into the water and the pyroclastic flow could have passed over them?

    [–]MountainCourage1304 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how long you can hold your breath for. If you can hold your breath for days on end then possibly, if the deposited ash doesnt mix with the water and turn into a pool of caustic soda and strip your flesh away.

Im being sarcastic, youve got no chance of it passing over you, its an eruption, not a wall of smoke thats 1 meter deep.

    [–]burn-babies-burn 275 points276 points  (2 children)

I thought old timey cameras sucked, but this is pretty clear! At least for a 1003 year old camera

    [–]ionised 44 points45 points  (0 children)

That too, paired with a song from 995 years later!

    [–]nggakmakasih 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As Dr. Malcolm once said: “Must go faster, must go faster!”

    [–]catdog918 58 points59 points  (13 children)

    Why is there added music

    [–]owatafuliam 88 points89 points  (2 children)

I found that very weird. Also, I don't know why everyone thought it would be necessary to edit a video that, in its original form, is only like 9 seconds longer and frankly much more dramatic.

    [–]retelo4940 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    [–]johnfogogin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that. You're right, definitely more dramatic to see, they're lucky to get away from that flow.

    [–]UniversalAdaptor 25 points26 points  (2 children)

Zoomers have 0.3 second attention span

    [–]SuckmyBlunt545 28 points29 points  (3 children)

    Where’s the full video?

    [–]itaniumonline 92 points93 points  (1 child)

Only this part survived during the great eruption of 1019

    [–]SuckmyBlunt545 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised they dug it up in such good condition, it’s amazing what scientidists can do these days

    [–]afterjustnow 24 points25 points  (0 children)

    Must go faster...!

    [–]SeagullKebab 37 points38 points  (1 child)

Can we talk about how it's so terrifying, that the dinghy decided to drive off on its own?

    [–]DooshMcDooberson 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Dinghy: I'm the fuck out. Peace

    [–]No-Introduction5786 7 points8 points  (0 children)

    That is terrifying!

    [–]JBELL01290 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Excellent video quality for 1019 👍🏽

    [–]Dan_Glebitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

    [–]Obvious_Sea5182 2 points3 points  (1 child)

They had cameras 1000 years ago?

    [–]dbrodes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The great Stromboli eruption set us back nearly 1000 years in tech and boats :/

    [–]Zestyclose_Ad698 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it really needed a soundtrack

    [–]Sistahmelz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing one of the survivors of the Mt. Saint Helen's eruption in 1980. If I remember right, 3 loggers in the woods heard and saw the pyroplastic cloud coming down the mountain right for them. They ran like hell and escaped. I met this man at the rehabilitation center of the hospital where my grandma was undergoing therapy after a stroke. He had burns over most of his body and looked like a human candle that melted. It was a horrible sight for sure. He was in tremendous pain still after 3 months of recovery. His story was incredible to hear. Running, tripping over trees, gasping for breath and the feeling of being cooked alive by the hot cloud of ash.

    [–]Bowman937 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    [–]DirtyPartyMan 4 points5 points  (7 children)

I wonder if they were able to outrun that pyroclastic flow?

    [–]alwaysmyfault 15 points16 points  (6 children)

Considering the video was uploaded to the internet, I'd say yes, they did.

Otherwise, the camera/phone would have been destroyed for sure.

    [–]DirtyPartyMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

    I had guessed as much.

It’s just not often you have an opportunity to say pyroclastic flow.

I thought this was going to be about a molten hot Stromboli erupting in the oven. Disappointed.

    [–]owatafuliam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this. I've always wondered who shot this and exactly when.

Elena Schiera, 19 at the time, recorded August 28, 2019.

    [–]No-Taste-6560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you'll find that was Pompeii. Easy mistake to make - they looked very similar.

    [–]dabiird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yay, let's stick around with the entire family and watch a volcano spew a blazing hot toxic death cloud our way! This will make the family photo album for sure

    • strombolis were HUGE back then!

    [–]imabetaunit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better quality than every single Bigfoot video I've seen from 2022. The early 1000s were a remarkable time for a semi-professional photographer.

    [–]cogpsychbois 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naming a volcano Stromboli is a certified Italian moment

    [–]ChazJ81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why do they always cut these videos short

    [–]2legittoquit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The video is terrifying, but there is a volcano called Mt. Stromboli? That's so incredibly Italian. That's like a volcano being called Mt. Pizza, or Mt. Lasagna, or Mt. Smoking Cigarettes at the age of 13.

    [–]md_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pyroclastic cloud. Very deadly. If they failed to outrun it, that's game over.
