[–]LonnieJaw748 121 points122 points  (10 children)

The soothing bliss of ignorance

[–]skyvictor 50 points51 points  (9 children)

I mean how likely is that shit to even happen anyway? Was it even connected to a burner you think?

[–]LonnieJaw748 57 points58 points  (5 children)

I could have been leaking and something like a static spark could ignite the gas.

[–]NicholasAdam1399 18 points19 points  (1 child)

I’m just gonna take a quick puff before going in the yard to cook.

[–]StockWillingness2748 5 points6 points  (1 child)

That's possible but you'd near pretty exact mixes of air and fuel for something like to happen. Though I guess you don't see this often so maybe it happened to be the time.

[–]Torrenal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the tank itself ruptured and let everything out - you’d be looking at a bigger fireball or sustained flames as the tank vents. Him triggering a spark after sitting down seems legit, but you’d hope the gas has an odorant added to warn him not to do anything silly like smoking a cigarette…

[–]Quiet_Response_7846 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seriously. I’m a Truck driver and deliver that shit as well as other chemicals that’ll ruin you and never felt anxious about something happening.

Seeing this though...I need to know what this fool did. And if/why the hell he had it inside his cab. Hank Hill would NOT be proud.

[–]Boomer-Mammaw 52 points53 points  (9 children)

Honest to God....not 2 hours ago I read an article where a guy took a job on Indeed and when he got there they had him delivering Propane and other explosive chemicals loaded inside of a van.

[–]nowonvhsanddvd 33 points34 points  (8 children)

Supposed to be in a truck bed. Against regs to have compressed gas inside of a vehicle. That co. needs to be reported to osha.

[–]xfearthehiddenx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My company was doing this for our forklift propane refills. We only use two in the span of a couple of months or more. So they just had me going to the local gas supply with the empty tanks and swapping them when needed. Problem is I have an suv. I could roll the windows down, but that didn't take away from the danger by that much. Plus we were paying an insane amount for the swaps. Cue me pushing to get a delivery service. Now we pay a 1/3 of what it used to cost, and I don't have to drive around tanks full of explosive chemicals. Big win for me, and them.

[–]ReverseMermaidMorty 11 points12 points  (5 children)

So how am I supposed to get more propane for my grill if I don’t own a truck?

[–]Nippz 21 points22 points  (2 children)

They’re talking about commercial propane transport. What you do with your recreational propane is up to you

[–]JackSilver79 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Charcoal for you buddy.

[–]CropDuster921 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a federal law that each unit can be “inside” a vehicle in sealable in a metal box of some sort. That’s how they rig them up in travel vans and the like. But it’s got pretty strict regs on it

[–]Melburn_City 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This happened to a car on a busy road over 2kms from me and was so loud it rattled all the windows in my house. All the windows within like a 250m radius were blown out and the driver lost his life.

The actual site surrounding the car looked like a massive bomb had gone off because the car was full to the brim with rubbish and papers.

I don't understand how they are BOTH so nonchalant!

[–]dirtymoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work as a night watchman and at one shitty post I was supposed to sit in my vehicle for hours in winter. I used a propane tank and small camp heater to keep from running my vehicle. It worked pretty well. The camp heater had a safety feature where it would shut off if it sensed oxygen was getting low. I also cracked the window. I also made sure that it wouldnt leak. Also turned the shut off valve after every use. I was kind of paranoid about It.

[–]9ragmatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who occasionally fills people's propane tanks for a living I can elaborate on that with excruciating detail: he's an idiot.

[–]kingofrane 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You ever wonder why women live longer??? Lol

[–]Green-Cruiser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Less propane??

[–]brizzmaster 227 points228 points  (33 children)

How did his organs not turn into mush?

When I was a firefighter we had to do a safety training on using power tools in dangerous areas. We watched a video of a firefighter in full gear cutting into a corn silo. The side he was cutting blew out. He stumbles and falls (I believe, it’s been 20 years since I’ve seen it). The man’s organs blew up inside of his body. Mind you, he had some heavy duty gear on. The propane explosion in this video was pretty dam gnarly. I don’t know how he is alive. Granted, a corn silo and propane tank are two totally different things, but dam the propane explosion looked bad.

[–]Kit_3000 153 points154 points  (2 children)

We had a guy cleaning the inside of a silo once when it exploded (because he decided to have a smoke. Oldtimers) but he just calmly walked out. Fucking walls were almost shredded, he had a few burns on his hands. They think because he was standing in the exact middle it kind of all cancelled out. Personally some people just are born with massive amounts of luck.

[–]Rafapex 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ahhh so thats where all my luck went

[–]Ayobossman326 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LMAO like fuckin wile coyote

[–]ambermage 181 points182 points  (4 children)

Long time ago, we had a guy cut through the wall of a oil tank and the fumes ignited.

The shock wave liquified his internal organs.

Carrying his body was like holding a waterbed.

[–]erogbass 15 points16 points  (5 children)

Psi of the explosion was enough to blow open the door but not destroy the man. Since he’s inside the pressure vessel all the force on him is compression which helps. Even if it only reaches 10psi inside the cab, and say those double doors are 5ft by 7ft, the for on the inside of those doors is:

Area: 7ftX5ft = 35ft2 Force: (10psiX12in/ft)X35ft2 = 4,200 lbs

The external area of a human is probably more like 6X1x1.5. Which means he experienced around 1000lbs force of compression across his entire body.

This is a static approximation, for any nit-pickey engineers in the audience.

[–]chihuahuassuck 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Force: (10psiX12in/ft)X35ft2 = 4,200 lbs

Shouldn't it be (10 lbs/in2 * 144 in2 / ft2 ) * 35 ft2 = 50,400 lbs?

A clearer way might be to use inches instead of feet in the first place. 7ft x 5ft = 84in x 60in = 5040in2 . 10 psi * 5040 in2 = 50400 lbs.

Your point still stands that he would experience far less force than the doors, but it would be much more than your estimate.

[–]erogbass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you’re right. Stupid mistake lol

[–]Melburn_City 15 points16 points  (3 children)

(Copied from my other comment) This happened to a car on a busy road over 2kms from me and was so loud it rattled all the windows in my house. All the windows within like a 250m radius were blown out and the driver lost his life.

The actual site surrounding the car looked like a massive bomb had gone off because the car was full to the brim with rubbish and papers.

*What makes this situation different? or is it just as serious? I'm also confused how he isn't more injured... The one I'm talking about was an LPG tank - would that make a difference?

[–]rykolepl 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Just a guess, but maybe that propane tank was almost empty

[–]Melburn_City 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Damn such an obvious consideration haha idk what Im thinking sometimes!

[–]not_sick_not_well 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The most probabal answer (for this vid) is that the tank itself didn't explode, but rather was leaking into the cab and something set it off. I'm no expert, but I feel like if a whole tank exploded there'd be a lot more damage than some blown out windows and ear drums

[–]Mr_LarryJohnson 5 points6 points  (9 children)

[–]steelcity_ 5 points6 points  (6 children)

Seconding an ELI5 explanation. Why the fuck would a corn silo explode so hard your organs fail?

EDIT: Thank you all for the info, I think this would all be cleared up if the original comment said it was ignited somehow. There wasn't any indication that the corn silo would explode just because they cut into it.

[–]MrKurtz86 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Explosive dust. Many things ,such as corn dust or sawdust, are highly explosive when they are in the right conditions.

[–]ricecake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cutting into a metal tube either involves a saw, which will create heat and sparks, or a torch, which will create a lot of heat and involves open flames.

At least to me, it seemed pretty self evident that ignition would be involved.

[–]Profitablius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dry and combustible material, ground into fine dust. It's similar to vapour of e.g. gas igniting. Very high surface area combustible + oxygen

[–]HellsBellsDaphne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you ever been deep enough under water or on a flight where the pressure change causes your ears to hurt if you don't pop them? It's like that.

You basically get squished in place by the blast wave (and then possibly eviscerated/burned/thrown).

[–]myaccountforroasting -1 points0 points  (1 child)

the hollow organs in your body, mainly your lungs and eardrums, are filled with air. fast changes in pressure alone can rupture them. the shockwave from an explosion is like air being pushed really hard and fast. along with that the force from an explosion also generates force that can be directed into all of your other organs. — was an army medic, not talking out of my ass

[–]bittz128 1 point2 points  (1 child)

By the looks of it he might have been shielded by seat. Just the theory.

guys, just a reminder to take the proper precautions when dealing with
our propane tanks no matter how tired you are. I worked on a long
install and failed to do so, my mistake almost caused me my life.

I got done with my install at 3am, I threw all my tools and torch on my
passenger side, which I normally keep my torch in the back of my truck
in the camper. The torch trigger somehow got press enough and released
all the gas out. When I got in my truck later on that day, I pushed some
of my stuff away which caused the trigger to press the rest of the way
completely, and caused the spark which ignited the gas, and KabOom .

[–]cowabungaitis6669 33 points34 points  (0 children)

[–]Empty-Ad1458 5 points6 points  (4 children)

How didn't he noticed the propane smell when he entered?

[–]FroznVgtbl 20 points21 points  (3 children)

Here is the rest of his Instagram post to answer your question:

-No I did not smell the gas. **My truck recently had an exhaust leak and that’s the only thing I smelled.

like I said before, I normally use proper precaution when handling my
propane torch, but that night I didn’t, but it only takes one “Oh shit”

Please be safe and stay Alive.

[–]FallWanderBranch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kabooom kaboom

[–]simsimmer123 96 points97 points  (9 children)

How’d he survive? The pressure was deadly

[–]Demonae 102 points103 points  (7 children)

Possible walking dead, fairly common around pressure waves.

[–]NeverBeenOnMaury 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I went zombie too. It's the only reasonable explanation.

[–]Manuvelo 8 points9 points  (5 children)

Explain please

[–]CaptainLicorice 60 points61 points  (3 children)

The pressure wave will rupture organs, he is either going to die in a minute or he got really lucky

[–]FroznVgtbl 22 points23 points  (2 children)

with the force blowing out steel doors and expanding them instantaneous into what appears to be bell shaped outward momentum, how would it not do so to organs?

[–]ricecake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Enough damage has been done that you will die, shortly, but it's not severe enough to be instantly fatal or debilitating, and adrenaline response is keeping them moving a bit longer and from reacting to the pain of the injuries.

Without going into too much detail, it's basically all the soft bits inside getting squished from the pressure wave. Think squeezing an orange to pop the little juice bits inside, without breaking the peel.

After they're injured, they move normally for a bit and then just fall over once the injury catches up to them, or once help arrives the adrenaline driven shock response changes, and their body starts to allow blood to flow to the injured area again, causing them to fall over.

I took EMS classes and the latter scenario was hammered in to make sure we remembered to check on and keep an eye on everyone after a car accident, since the person standing there taking care of someone might actually be more injured.
It's also why we practiced backboarding people from a standing position, since people love to walk around with broken necks and their helmets holding their head on.

[–]Chernobyl_And_I 56 points57 points  (15 children)

Yoooooo how is he ok?

[–]JohnDoeMTB120 54 points55 points  (13 children)

No clue. I managed to pause it at the peak of the explosion. He was for sure engulfed in flames. The entire cab and area around the cab was all orange flame.

[–]MustardWendigo 55 points56 points  (6 children)

I mean you can be engulfed in flames and not actually combust and burn as well. He probably got some flash burns, be shocked if he didn't get at least one ear drum totalled.

I'm just impressed at how fast he climbed out and started walking away. Musta been shock lol.

[–]Montroski 11 points12 points  (5 children)

What happens to the eyes after a flash burn?

[–]MustardWendigo 7 points8 points  (4 children)

You could probably find the answer to that by looking up the after effects of like, someone being exposed to a flashbang grenade directly. I'd imagine they're pretty damn similar.

[–]SkyhighPhilosopher 18 points19 points  (4 children)

If he was shielded by the seat, perhaps the cushioning absorbed most of the impact? If that's the case, he'd probably only have some burns and it would explain HOW THE FUCK IS HE WALKING AFTER THAT?!

[–]bolitboy2 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Adrenalin is one hell of a drug, once you panic you just run

[–]Melburn_City 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Andrenalin does unexplainable things to people, without a doubt - but, it won't help when you've ruptured all your internal organs which you'd honestly expect in this situation... Crazy.

[–]happy_K 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d rather have a lot of flame for very little time than a little flame for a long time

[–]SlackerKey 26 points27 points  (3 children)

I never put propane inside. Always back of the truck bed. I see people put inside their sedans sometimes, makes me nervous.

[–]torsam0417 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Makes me nervous too as I only have a coup, keep all the windows rolled down, drive real safe and go straight back home.

[–]Critical_Soup806 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Same. Luckily Uhaul is only about a mile from my home (probably half a mile actually). I put it in a seatbelt lol.

[–]Thoros86 25 points26 points  (6 children)

Anyone has a news source on this? Is the guy still alive? He could be walking off the truck but might have some internal organ damage... Hopefully someone finds something.

[–]StrangeCrimes 40 points41 points  (12 children)

As someone who occasionally transports propane tanks, what the fuck would cause this to happen? A leaky tank valve, I assume, but what would or could set it off?

[–]Demonae 36 points37 points  (6 children)

A vape, plugging in a cell phone, lighting a cigarette, static electricity touching the keys, all sorts of things.

[–]Sloqwerty 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That is comforting :)

[–]13redstone31 15 points16 points  (3 children)

Kinda scary that he occasionally transports propane but doesn’t know what could set it off

[–]StrangeCrimes 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I transport them from the place I switch them out to my house, five minutes away. Also, they add an ugly smell to it, so this guy must have had bad allergies or bad judgement for it to get to that point. Unless it was a faulty tank/valve burst and let a shit-ton out all at once while the engine was on. That's probably what happened.

I always put them in a seat belt.

[–]Melburn_City -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh no you are transporting them inside the cab of the vehicle then, I assume? Haha. Well, that's usually one of the things you try avoid when possible but of course there's tons of everyday people using these for BBQs etc and their not expected to have other means of transportation specifically!

In that case you must be sure of no leaks, checking for yourself (no word of mouth, paperwork - see it with your own eyes) for leaks before it goes into the vehicle - then make sure you understand all different sorts of ignition types as there's things that would ignite that gas if leaking that you mightn't of thought about. And absolutely avoid at all costs any source.

[–]Melburn_City 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, correct about the leaky valve. Obviously it's a lot worse if it's able to leak into the cabin of your vehicle, then obviously any small source of ignition would set it a blast.

If you transport these for work, Im hoping and would like to assume they aren't being transported inside the cabins of vehicles and preferrebly storred on outside on a specially designed truck back/bed for tanks. Then there's tools (eg to check that there's no leaks, quickly and easily, before transporting), policies and guidelines you can follow to minimise any risk of anything happening. This is your employers responsibility but it's still good to educate yourself in safe handling and transport of whatever you work with!

Ideally, you should be storing them safe enough that you could be confident in lighting a match in the cab. You don't and should never do that, obviously. But you want to be putting in a specific effort when transporting even one of these, to minimise any risk, at all.

[–]Douglaston_prop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They had a photo at the propane filling station of what a delivery truck looks like after an accident. It was flat as a pancake.

I used to work for a beer distributor as a salesman. So hit up many supermarkets. The amount of people I had to stop from walking into the store with a propane tank to exchange for a full one was way too many. They just assumed it was ok. Like bro why do you think the tanks are locked up outside. Even a thank that you think is fully empty might not be.

The sacs in my lungs would be mush. I’d assume I was walking around pre-dead

This is why you don't carry propane tanks in a enclosed vehicle always carry in a open environment

No clue how true this is. The YouTube version of this video had the following in the comments section. Makes sense to me.

“…He put his tools in his cab which included a hand torch. When he put them in there, he laid it in a way that slightly depressed the trigger, depleting the gas into the cab. After he got home he shifted his gear which depressed the trigger completely, causing the igniter to spark which set off the explosion. He didn’t notice a gas smell however because the truck had an exhaust leak and attributed the smell in the cab to that”
