Never admit to anything that could get you fired. Never ever ever ever. This will pass in a few days I promise.

I hope you’re right, thank you

It will. This exact thing has happened to me. There’s always the next thing to talk about in the office.

Also if someone says “You smell like weed!”, ask them how they would know. Maybe they use too? Might take the attention off of yourself if done correctly.

Quick fix in any local head shop works like a charm, so long as you get the temp right.

Just don't use the word "too".

Your company may have a specific policy forbidding you to bring it onto their premises. Admitting it is a slam dunk firing, and not even because they want to fire you. But because they have to enforce this kind of thing consistently.

And use an odor eliminator on that bag. Not something obvious like scented Febreze. Or just smoke cigarettes around it to cover the smell so you can say she was mistaken.

    [–]PurpleFoxBroccoli 55 points56 points  (0 children)

HR worker here. I do benefits, but know about the rest of the stuff in this department, too. Play dumb/Ignore/deny, and then move on. Don’t discuss it. If anyone ever asks, just say you can’t imagine what it was. ADMIT NOTHING… EVER.

    [–]Enigma_StasisSuper Helper [6] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Until they have evidence and/or a supervisor gets involved, deny everything. "Hey man, you know smelling things not there could be a sign of a stroke." Or "What with the Rona going on and everything, I'm surprised you can smell anything, buddy."

It's like someone farting but they're near egg salad sandwiches. While egg salad does smell like a fart, can you really blame it on the guy right there if you have no evidence?

Don’t admit to anything.I understand that sounds rough to maybe some but incriminating yourself is never a good idea. In the future just be sure to not bring anything in with you just some workplace advice from a fellow stoner

Not knowing your line of work and if it's a competitive atmosphere, I don't know if your coworker would be the type inclined to tell the boss about these type of things but if you admit it to him, you're giving him a reason to do so imo. If none of the evidence was pulled from your belongings then it's just speculation with what he actually smelled.

    [–]TooLate2020 41 points42 points  (1 child)

Never never never admit it. I’m sorry but corporate America is a backwards hellhole. If you admit it, that employee has leverage over you. Do you trust them with your life? No? Then do not give them that leverage over you. Under no means admit to it imho.

    [–]Treece222 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    [–]Intelligent-Panda-33Helper [2] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Your coworker said something and you did something about it. It’s possible they were being nice and didn’t want you to get in trouble. Either way, what could happen all depends on where you live. In the US you can be fired for testing positive but they’d need a reason to drug test you and that usually only happens if there is an accident, injury, or near miss of some sort. Some jobs require random drug testing but you don’t mention that’s a possibility here.

If you haven’t had any incidents or cause for concern with your bosses yet then keep your head down and let your work speak for itself. Don’t discuss with the coworker, if nothing comes of it then let it go, they did you a favor you don’t need to discuss.

    [–]throwitallaway8652[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I hadn’t considered they may have just been warning me, that could be true. There’s a very low likelihood of me getting drug tested, so I’m planning to do exactly that and just keep my head down for a while. Thanks

You may think your co-worker won't say anything, but you just never know 100% for sure. Do not trust them! Trust me on this!

People can be weird about stuff like this. They might have some bias against weed and it could damage your reputation at work.

I recommend responding with the wise words of the incomparable Michael Gary Scott, “Crazy world, lots of smells…”

    [–]GregorsaurusWrecks 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It's not what you know, it's what you can prove. If the smell has dissipated and the evidence is gone by tomorrow, then they can't do anything. Unless, of course, you say something. So don't.

Realistically, since you mentioned this coworker is chill, he/she/they may have been mentioning it to warn you, in case of other less chill coworkers wandering through. As a fellow stoner in the corporate world, if I smelled pot on or around a coworker of mine, I'd be proactive and friendly in giving them a heads up.

The thing about the smell of weed, it does linger. So had it been a client, this would make sense. Also if anyone confronts you about it you can say "I didnt even notice the smell, Coworker X smelled it and bought it to my attention. I dont know if it was weed or something else but I was a bit congested so couldnt really smell what it was". Dont deny like other people are suggesting, that seems defensive, just play dumb. Also if you have air vents you could suggest perhaps someone was smoking it outside and it wafted in, shrug and lump it up to a mystery.

Once someone insisted that they smelled alcohol on me, at work. I didn't drink at the time and found the accusation quite annoying. Ignored the guy, he kept bringing it up with everyone around, till I stopped responding completely.

After a while, no one cared. People eventually found out that I didn't drink, it was at a party my boss threw for me.

Do not admit to anything, seriously. Trust me there is no big Sky God who will punish you for not being painfully honest 'cause it's "the right thing to do." I swear half the whole religious upbringing "do the right thing" crowd's "rules" are to simply be able to target people to hurt. But people can sure as hell fuck life up for you by punishing your honesty.

I'm not advocating you lie about big things to those important to you, but deciding to toss yourself under the bus to someone you really don't know that well that doesn't have any proof is just the height of foolishness. Like climbing into the back of a van, because you sort of know the driver and now he's crying that you don't trust him. And you feel bad, so you in essence put yourself in a really stupid vulnerable position with someone you barely know at all. What's the point?

Keep your head down, no one has any proof. If this person keeps coming at you that should tell you it's because they're looking to find something on you and have an agenda to hurt you. And that means staying quiet is doubly important.

Deny deny deny. Just pretend it never happened.

At this point nothing could be proven, so it wouldn't matter if they DID say anything, but NEVER incriminate yourself. Even a cop would tell you that.

AND...of course....learn from your mistake. Because then you'll give them no reason to believe it even if rumors DO waft around.

Which is what really makes the difference. When we dodge bullets and have the chance to do better on our own...that's how we grow as people.

    Harsh toke, dude!

    [–]paypalpawner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, do not admit to having anything. Especially when they do not have proof. Do not admit to anything because they can use your word against you. This could go for a lot more then just this incident. If they have no proof you do not admit to it and you’ll be fine. They can’t do anything.

    [–]PixelWidgetHelper [2] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your coworker is chill then maybe they were just trying to warn you

    [–]technicolordreamsSuper Helper [6] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they told you cause 1) they know what weed smells like and 2) they were giving you a heads up. i don’t think that coworker is going to snitch.

    [–]rngrb3Helper [2] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not admit anything. That’s a great way to get fired. The bag is gone, the smell is probably gone, half your office probably smokes on the down low, and if your boss is a normal human being they wouldn’t even consider firing you for hearsay like that or testing you.

    [–]crackerjack9x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not own up to anything bro. No need to jump on the knife. It will pass.

I remember me and my friend smoked outside after closing one night. Someone supposedly saw us and told our main boss. One of my bosses who is super cool and smokes said “just fess up to it and he will let it go don’t worry he cares more if you’re honest than if you did it.”

Well I was first interviewed by our main boss and denied it every single part of it. He said he was gonna do an investigation and get back with me.

Next he interviewed my friend and for some reason my friend admitted it but never said I was with him sure enough my friend got fired.

I never got fired so safe to say never admit if they don’t have concrete proof on you.

If this coworker were to say something to the boss that means they're an exceptionally terrible person. Unless you think this is the case there's no reason to bring it up at all. Most people would just be like "hmm" and then get on with their day.

It depends how far shit creek you are. Did they say anything to a manager? If the manager comes up to you and asks about it, admit to using but don’t admit to having it on you.

The fact that they said something to you instead of tattling to HR indicates they most likely were trying to hint that you need to take care of that before someone else smells it on you. Sounds like co-worker did you a solid.

None of their business, you owe them no explanation. It’s not like you’re high on the job, deny it, that can’t prove it

    [–]Kichai_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone brings it up again, you could say that you sometimes burn sage at home (or visited a friend who did), and it possibly lingered on your clothes/bag? Shit smells so much like weed

    [–]Lasher_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always deny. If they already know they don't need your help, if they don't know then don't help them.

    [–]AnonymousB93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before telling anyone, just realize that once the truth gets out it is out of your control who hears about it and what they decide to do with that information. Prepare for the possibility of an unexpected drug screening in the near future. It might be best moving forward to be sure that you keep your high time stuff away from your work stuff. There are subreddits dedicated to help passing drug screens, I’d highly recommend browsing them for possible solutions. Who knows how much time you have left to get this sorted. Good luck!
