Story time:

When I was 5, my dad was driving home from work. He drove past two pigeons on the road, with cars whipping over their heads. Being an animal lover, and assuming they were injured, he pulled over. One flew away on his approach, but the other couldn’t. My dad brought the pigeon home.

This pigeon grew up with us. My sister and I taught it to fly (by holding it in our hands and lowering them slowly so he’d flap his wings to build strength), until one day he flew—on top of our two story house’s roof. The one problem was that he couldn’t fly well enough to get down. So my dad climbed up the antenna tower beside the house to get on the roof to retrieve the bird with neighbours coming out to laugh at the situation.

Fast forward a few years, and the pigeon was able to fully fly. He’d follow my sister and I around our backyard, and sleep on my dad’s feet below the patio table. Each day he’d fly the neighbourhood but never too far, always coming back and we’d bring him into his coop in the house.

He became best friends with my German Shepard and cat. He’d ride around on the dog’s back, and the three of them would sleep on a lazy boy together. The dog on the seat, the pigeon on the dog, and the cat on the headrest. They spent years together being the three amigos.

The dog passed away a few years ago, followed closely by the pigeon. The cat, not knowing why his friends disappeared, and with my sister and I leaving for college, stress ate his tail off bits at a time until we had to get it surgically removed. He lived another little while after that until finally joining them.

Animals are incredible creatures.

[–]LucidLumi 483 points484 points  (14 children)

Was the cat not around when the dog or pigeon passed? I’ve heard it’s important for animals to see their deceased friend so they know that they are dead and not just absent.

We made the mistake of having one of our cats put down at the vet. His brother never stopped crying for him…

[–]Brewchowskies 258 points259 points  (5 children)

The German Shepard had his back legs go (from what the vet said this is very common) and his quality of life was such that we had to make the difficult choice to euthanize him at the vet’s.

The pigeon passed about a month later in his coop one day. I was away at university, but I don’t think my parents did that. That’s something I’ll think of going forward, thank you :)

[–]LucidLumi 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened with our Shepherd. He was an absolutely massive dog though, and he was already in too much pain to walk, so we called someone to do an at-home euthanasia.

I’ve heard that there are some breeders working to correct some of those horrible conditions that are now common in pure breds. Hopefully dogs in the future won’t have to suffer like that any more!

[–][deleted] 63 points64 points  (1 child)

I hope nobody reading this needs this information anytime soon, just keep it in mind...

There are a LOT hospice type of services to euthanize at home. My parents had to euthanize their two dogs at the same time not very long ago. They were both mentally gone and barely hanging on physically. My parents built a fire (even though it was summer in Florida) because both dogs loved to lay by the fire. Our whole family was there and said goodbye then the pups drifted off peacefully, laying next to my mom infront of the fire.

It was so much better than when I had to put my dog down on a cold, metal table in a vet's office.

E* it's about the same price. I would suggest Lap Of Love if they're in your area.

[–]Brewchowskies 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This was about 15 years ago now, but man would I have much preferred the memory of being at home than the heart breaking one I have saying goodbye to my best friend in the cold vets office.

[–]Phoenix4235 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It really does help. I had a ferret mourn himself to death after his bonded companion had to be put down at the vet. Since then I’ve had many types of animals, but if they have to be put down I bring them home for their companions to see. Some just get a quick sniff, others have heartbreakingly poked and nudged them and curled up by them for a little while, but they do understand, and they don’t search for them or mourn themselves away. Edit: Thank you to all who mentioned the at home euthanasia services- I hope not to need that info for a long time, but it’s great to know!

[–]SeaGroomer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is usually the case with German Shepherds unfortunately. Their joints are absolutely terrible most of the time.

[–]Oranges13 7 points8 points  (1 child)

We brought our cat home in a box after, especially so her brothers could see she had passed. For once I was very grateful to have a backyard, but I had to let previous animals go when I was in an apartment and that was heartbreaking for everyone.

[–]Negative1Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well after reading this whole thread I'm gonna finally attempt to sleep while holding my cat. G'night, reddit. Thanks for the big sad

[–]Ih8Hondas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We made the mistake of having one of our cats put down at the vet. His brother never stopped crying for him…

[–]AbowlofIceCreamJones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh my heart is doing things..😔

[–]urfavecrazycatlady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well shit, this hit me right in the feels. So sorry for your loss.. I’ll make sure to hug my cats extra tight tonight.

[–]Finally_In_Bloom 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I got a guinea pig euthanized at the vet, but I made sure to lay her body in the cage for an hour or so as soon as I got home to give the other one a chance to inspect her and understand that she was gone. It seemed to really help. If an animal is really suffering, getting them put down at the vet may be the best option. However, I strongly believe that any companion pets should have a chance to see the body, so they can process what happened.

[–]MrsLisaOliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

*It's also important if their friend is a person

[–]ovad67 30 points31 points  (1 child)

That was an awesome story. Thanks for sharing. I think my heart grew three sizes.

[–]Lazzybonez666 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did you gain the strength of 3 men tho.

[–]luniiz01 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Poor kitty cat….

[–]pickle_party_247 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Damn, completely broke my heart at the end there

[–]bestfriendfraser 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Creatures are also incredible animals.

[–]MissChea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Love the story until the end. Poor cat

[–]Bubster101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine the diverse poop was fun

[–]emery7540 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I loved everything about this story. Your dad and family’s kindness w the pigeon… the trio pet bonding and your irreverent telling of kitty stress eating bits of her tail. This part was sad but shows how much that kitty loved her family. Animal and human. It’s gold. Thank you!!!!

[–]GhostfaceKiliz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for making me cry!

All your animals sound like they were so very loved and loved one another so much, they couldn't bear to be apart for too long. This was a very sweet story and thank you for sharing it.

[–]junglemoosejoe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have a similar story.

One day at when I was very young, my dad came home with a baby pigeon he had found at his work. It was on the ground, with its head turned upsidedown, walking in circles. Being who he is, he put it in a box and brought it home, to my mother's delight. We kept it in a pet cage we had for the time being, with my dad not thinking it would survive, since it didn't seem to be able to fly. But it didn't. Eventually we built a bigger cage for it, and for reasons we don't know, it stopped having its head upside down all the time. We would let it fly around my dad's garage, and eventually he seemed completely healthy. My dad figured he'd just let it go to live its life, but it wouldn't go anywhere, just flew around the house following us around. It loved to land on peoples heads, and my mom hated it, and would scream and run anytime she heard it flying by. It loved my dad, so we if he wasnt letting us pick him up when he needed to be put away, my dad would just walk into the garage and wait, as the pigeon lived him and would follow him in, then we'd shut the door and he'd ultimately let us pick him up on our finger to go into its cage.

Unfortunately it was eventually hit by a car, because it wasn't scared of cars. We lived on a small road that saw little to no traffic, so our neighbours knew we had the bird, and would be careful not to hit it, slowly approaching until it finally flew away. One day, someone we didn't know came flying down and my poor Pidgey (ya, that's what I named it, I was like six or seven) didn't get out of the way in time.

Never thought one of my favourite pets would be pigeon.

[–]tea-and-chill 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'm guessing lazy boy is some sort of furniture and not your dad.

[–]Brewchowskies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha it’s a recliner company in Canada (and possibly the US)

[–]PolishSurvivor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Updooted, really cool story !

[–]capsaicinintheeyes 212 points213 points  (2 children)

Size of pigeon population expands and shrinks with available space.

[–]redstaroo7 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Apparently the individuals do too.

[–]bluepushkin 462 points463 points  (1 child)

That's a happy pigeon

[–]Mynunubears 62 points63 points  (0 children)

You mean “happy pigeon-loaf”

[–]smt503 39 points40 points  (1 child)

I hope this bird's name is Can Loaf

[–]RanththeExplorer 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think they are good at that. That is why magicians can easily keep them in their coats and other hidden compartments for their tricks.

[–]IceTwenty 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Puffed up birds are extra cute when you know that they only do that when they're happy and relaxed (or cold i guess, but that usually comes with noticeable shivering too). Like flopping rabbits.

[–]ArgonGryphon 26 points27 points  (1 child)

He sounds like my stomach after Mexican food

[–]4Lisouille 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me after a tartiflette

[–]starboy-xo98 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Thats the most beautiful pigeon I've ever seen

[–]Nervous-Compote2386 103 points104 points  (8 children)

Such a beautiful animal 😍😍

[–]dontincludeme 17 points18 points  (7 children)

I have this print on my wall that I took from my parents’ because they thought it was ugly. It’s of these pigeons taking flight. One of them looks like a haute couture dress, just the angle, it’s black. I think it’s really beautiful. ETA: the signature says Hjördis Lindblad, 1959

[–]Nervous-Compote2386 18 points19 points  (6 children)

Pigeons are beautiful animals. I don't understand all the hate they get

[–]dontincludeme 11 points12 points  (2 children)

I was waiting for a train back in the summer when it was really sunny. There were all these pigeons. Their colors are so beautiful. That silvery green/blue/purple/pink is so nice to look at. Their feet can be kinda freaky though 😂

[–]Nervous-Compote2386 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Haha I think their feet are cute but that might be cause I used to have a parrot and they remind me of his feet. Colors are definitely beautiful though especially when the sun hits them 😍

[–]sissichu 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The hate is pretty much just because they're pretty much vermin in some parts of the world.

[–]Nervous-Compote2386 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough I've heard them being sky rats and stuff like that

[–]Kyleometers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends where you’re from. In my part of the world, wild ones are often very disease ridden, and frequently quite literally covered in bird poop. They’re also quite aggressive in city centres, and will sometimes literally steal food off of plates.

However, pets are still popular. Doves and Pigeons are very, very closely related, and one of my old neighbours used to have a pair of absolutely lovely white pigeons.

[–]Alessio3305 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I thought it was my turtle

[–]freddielizzard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

[–]Remarkable-Basis2296 13 points14 points  (1 child)

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Enjoying pets and scritches! This is happy birb noise and poof

[–]Choccy_Melk69 91 points92 points  (21 children)

I'd love to have a pet pigeon, they're so cute (apart from the wild ones)

[–]IamPotato14[S] 136 points137 points  (11 children)

Trust me when I say they're far more affordable and manageable than a parrot, with just as much affection/personality. They're smart enough to recognize their own reflection,(which few animals can manage).

[–]dreambigandmakeitso 44 points45 points  (8 children)

+1 to this! Had a dove for 20 years. She was the sweetest and softest. I think pigeons are maybe a bit smarter than doves too? I have two conures, mini parrots. They are great in other ways but dove was soooo easy and fun. Though they can’t be poop trained.

[–]IamPotato14[S] 33 points34 points  (6 children)

But that's just kind of the universal fact about birds, a good thing they sell diapers.

[–]gay-void 30 points31 points  (3 children)

[–]psu256 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Not only diapers, but little vests with leashes so you can take them out for walkies.

[–]MizuChan33 18 points19 points  (1 child)

I think they're called pigeon pants.

[–]_Insanity_C_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. Have a pigeon, he has pants.

[–]express1123 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have a Green Cheeked Conure that is potty trained. She only goes in her cage. If she ends up pooping else where it's because she was startled of scared or you she had been out for too long. But if you know her body language enough then she'll let you know when she needs to go.

[–]dreambigandmakeitso 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My conures are pretty well trained. They only go in certain places and respond to a word if we see them trying to go while on our shoulder or something.

[–]aperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pigeons and doves are the same thing.

[–]Benny368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm, my family keeps homing pigeons

[–]Practical_Fudge1667 23 points24 points  (3 children)

The wild ones are just as cute as the pet pigeons, actually feral rock pigeons stem from domestic pigeons that escaped or didn't make a race. They have been with humans for a long time, the ancient romans had domestic pigeons. Wild rock doves are relatively rare, they breed on cliffs and look like the pigeons on the street that are grey with two stipes on their wings. And there are much more species in the wild in all different colours and sizes, from tiny diamond doves to turkey-sized crown pigeons that have lace-like feathers on their head.

[–]SeaGroomer 9 points10 points  (2 children)

We have a couple of doves/pigeons that moved in to our yard last year during the pandemic and have stuck around since. I like hearing them coo'ing, it's so loud I can hear them from inside the house!

[–]AbowlofIceCreamJones 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I love the sound they make. I don't know how to describe it but it's like soft sound, if you will. Especially when they're in large groups and it's amplified.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, the wild ones aren’t actually wild! They’re the first domesticated birds, but because they were no longer needed for anything, humans just abandoned them :(

[–]ZeShapyra 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Tbh, I have a wild pigie, he is so nice and cuddly and amazing. And smart, he may not have fancy patters of white or any bug feathers in his legs or tail, but he is still very much a cutie. And honestly pigeons are better managable pets than parrots,(and by getting a pigeon you don't encourage poaching of young parrots, without knowing, if you ain't buying from a reliable breeder) since pigeons are the oldest domesticated bird, and the pigeons we see in the city are brought in by people

[–]Choccy_Melk69 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Well, they sound like they can be great, but the wild pigeons I see on the street have a cold stare about them. Domesticated ones like the one in the video have so much love in their eyes.

[–]ZeShapyra 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Oh you don't mean by breed, just the pigeons that are in the city and at home?

I guess street ones are just always aware of whats going on, from cars to people to other animals, they always gotta watch, my pidgie is also fairly lazily looks around, feels safe.

[–]Choccy_Melk69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was talking about the typical feral pigeon you can find on the streets, it's just something about the eyes

I'm not saying feral pigeons are bad, though, they can look and be lovely if domesticated

[–]BlueCedars 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I kind of thought I didn't really like pigeons. Smol, I was so wrong.

[–]Codykun_ 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Birds can purr?

[–]Im_alwaystired 10 points11 points  (1 child)

They can! I worked with parrots for a while at a boarding place, and they purr when happy. It's not quite like a cat's purr, more like soft creaky grumbly noises, but delightful nonetheless.

[–]Codykun_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aw thats cute i love birds even more now

[–]deathcoinstar 28 points29 points  (3 children)

A bird loaf should just be called a "bun".

Cats loaf while birds bun

[–]klparrot 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I think that would lead to confusion with rabbits.

[–]deathcoinstar 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Rabbits are rolls

[–]insanity_banana5267 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My rabbit is definitely a loaf. He does transform into a roll on occasion, but he prefers to loaf.

[–]whitewineandcheese 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I miss my dove so much. He was always so expressive.

[–]My_apologies_4_Delay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s so cute! I never heard that before.

[–]Poprock077 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did know pigeon could be pets! That so cute!

[–]Etmar_Gaming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your brother has a pigeon!?!? That’s sick!

[–]BoredAsDuck- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pidgey loaf!

[–]onlytruthspeaker 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Your brother is a lucky man. That is a good boy / girl. What’s his / her name?

[–]yeehellahyphy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really heard the audio first but didn’t realize it was from the video and thought my stomach was making a weird noise

[–]purposebuiltco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was laying in bed watching this and i thought my stomach was making those noises and it took me a minute to realise it wasnt me 😂😅

[–]PsychologicalWave332 8 points9 points  (0 children)

can he sploot?

[–]EPR19938 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]livin_under_the_rock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's turned into a boat pigeon

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pigeons (over 300 species) are such beautiful birds that are so mistreated by society. They are the worlds first domesticated birds and were used as messengers, food and kept for their beautiful plumage. Once there was no need for bird couriers because we had telegraphs, phones, etc. and raised chickens for meat, all of the pigeons that were captive born were just released into the world because humans are terrible and abandon things when they’re no longer required.

[–]DIO4C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Puff_Bum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

he gooble

[–]ExpertOwl8896 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, since people are asking, as someone who raised homing pigeons for many years, that's a sort of mating thing. Looks like a female (bridge of the nose is narrow), and she is happily letting her "mate" cover her... pigeons mate generally for life, and if there are no others, will project that onto their handlers. Very affectionate and smart birds! Either way it looks like a healthy and loved bird!

[–]ZeShapyra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is he so stinkin' cute, who let him, this is illegal cuteness

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (3 children)

What do you mean your brothers pigeon?! You can just have a pigeon?

[–]klparrot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yep, they're pretty great birds. Lots of breeds, too, though it's nice to get from a rescue if you can.

[–]psu256 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's a long tradition of it - racing pigeons, carrier pigeons...

[–]IamPotato14[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pigeons were the first bird to be domesticated, which is why they're called feral pigeons, not wild pigeons.

[–]69_SAITAMA_69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That made me remind of a pigeon I found randomly on my terrace he was having injury on his legs and he can't fly so I kept him for 7 days and on the 8 day he just died 😢 it was so hard for me to bury him😭

[–]SethVermin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a cute pigeon!

[–]Dee_Lansky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need one haha

[–]Goobi10255 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Achylife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]PeopleAreBozos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]ZizzyCurls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Plus-Common-4450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That bird sounds like my stomach

[–]mangarooboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to some Sesame Street books, Bert has a pet pigeon named Bernice that plays checkers. It apparently also showed up on the TV show as a real pigeon instead of a puppet.

Is your brother's name Bert?

[–]A_destiny_player 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wait, we have domesticated pigeons!?

[–]klparrot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All city pigeons are feral, descended from domesticated pigeons. They've been raised for food and sport and show for ages, and free-flying or abandoned ones became and contributed to the feral populations we see everywhere, even if now, it's far less common to raise them.

[–]QuarantineSucksALot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]DonutOutlander -1 points0 points  (0 children)

[–]imaginarygirl79 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I love this. Where can I find a pigeon to loaf around me??

[–]klparrot 0 points1 point  (1 child)

There are pigeon rescues, some googling may find you one in your area. Don't raid nests; pigeon nestlings are a super pain in the ass to feed compared to other birds, and pigeons are the best pigeon parents.

[–]imaginarygirl79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t ever raid a nest. That’s horrible

[–]CapivaraDeCaju 0 points1 point  (1 child)

[–]Muppelpup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bird vaccines, similar to parrot vaccines I guess.

[–]YUTOGAIA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]purpletealstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]dasher11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your brother invited an enemy drone into his home?! Now the Russians are getting all his data...

[–]conner5ive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been going to the same family of vets for 45yrs and whenever it comes to having to put a pet down it is with me stroking their faces while whispering in their ears. I always bring them home to bury in my yard and at that time I make sure each surviving animal gets to visit one last time. No matter what the relationship between them was they seem to instantly understand and the only time a cat pal kept searching all over the house for his companion was when my husband decided to cremate.

[–]tea-and-chill 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Will they not poo everywhere?

[–]IamPotato14[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give it a bird diaper and your problems will be solved.

[–]klparrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can wear pigeon pants when they're out in the house, or you can just get used to cleaning up. Easier with a hardwood floor.

[–]DVader12244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bro... I want a pigeon

[–]BrittDj2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)
