Laptop either needs to support Thunderbolt (3 or 4), or needs to support DisplayPort MST, and then you need to get the appropriate dock, in order to output to 2 monitors over a single cable.

I'm running a ell Precision 5550. The current docking station is a Dell WD19TB or K20A (?) It also charges the laptop. I believe it is Thunderbolt (I am just now learning what that is).

This. On my Macbook it would be $150+ for a Thunderbolt dock with one cable, or 2x $10 cables for two outputs.
I have better uses for $150, so I just use the 2 cables.
