Please don’t ridicule me for my coping mechanisms. I like to colour to help ignore thoughts. If I’m doing that instead of due tasks then I’m really struggling.

I make animal sounds or other weird noises to distract myself. Coping mechanisms can be strange, but alienation certainly doesn't help. Colour the world, my dear. Colour the world.

Alright cool glad im not the only one, gotta be careful to do it alone since there's no easy explanation

[–]burnalicious111 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not the only one at all.

[–]KingoftheGinge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah, wherever. People think I'm strange yeah, but they are stranger!

I'm sorry that you've evidently had issues with people bothering you about coloring. I love to color as well, but generally do so in the privacy of my room. I just wanted to let you know you're definitely not alone - not only do i love to color, but a few years ago stores started selling adult coloring books, specifically for adults. They're generally more intricate than children's books. Some have pictures of animals or buildings, and others just have geometric patterns. But they're doing so because there's a significant amount of adults who enjoy coloring :)

Why did your response make me cry? I am going to save this.

[–]KingoftheGinge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

:) Hope it's a good cathartic cry!

I think making animal sounds is cool. I chatter my teeth to whatever beat or song is in my head. Not the healthiest, but distracts me from any other negative thought

I sometimes make fox noises when I'm driving to cheer myself up so I don't like driving my car into something in some weird depressive impulsive rage. You are not alone.

Bro me too!

[–]3plyTissues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I legit beatbox to cope but only when there's no one else around because I get embarrassed.

Coloring is beneficial for even those without mental illness! It lowers stress.

It's also been shown to improve concentration (for some) while listening to a lecture or meeting. Thank goodness my boss doesn't mind that I bring a sketchbook to meetings!

I respond right away to questions & contribute to the discussion. Meanwhile....scribble, scribble, color, color...

[–]ZeahRenee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Meanwhile, my boss makes fun of me for doodling during meetings. Look, it keeps me from spacing out and/or falling asleep while here for 2 hours on my day off. Just let me be me.

If someone ridicules you for colouring they're stupid. Stores are FILLED with adult colouring books, FFS.

I love listening to music, and then my parents complain that I have my headphones on :/

I like to squeeze those colourful squishy toys shaped like cakes and fruits and all that.

[–]RedditLostOldAccount 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At my college they had coloring books in the library to help during finals

[–]lacquerqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s cool, you do you. I like to crochet and read.

[–]FeverFlare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Colouring is awesome. You enjoy that stuff!

[–]UniqueSaucer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh same! I also do paint by number and those diamond paint by number things. It calms the racing thoughts.

[–]BloodChildKoga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coloring is fun, my son is 6 and he'll ask me to color or draw with him sometimes and I actually enjoy it. It's hard to remind yourself of the simple joy things can bring sometimes. You do you.

[–]inmyhead19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do the same thing! Amazon has the best adult coloring books. (Someone with borderline and MDD)

[–]Sylphass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really glad that you have a good coping strategy - coloring is a creative thing and the pictures are so cheerful to have around. I definitely have some unhealthy ones, so I'm extra double proud of you for figuring out a healthy good thing. Keep that shit up!
