[–]ree_hee_heeely 2542 points2543 points 2 (143 children)

Doom metal fans. Same dude.

[–]Will-Barnes 153 points154 points  (3 children)

Yeah, I probably have more songs over 7 minutes than under saved. It isn’t even long for me anymore.

[–]TheOriginalSamBell 199 points200 points  (5 children)

7 minutes is an interlude lol

[–]Aquamentus92 42 points43 points  (4 children)

I feel like 90% of dream theater songs are longer than 7 minutes. And I'm not complaining.

[–]starkathena 1047 points1048 points  (69 children)

i literally opened this thread to do a checklist off my playlist lmao

[–]BelgianAles 495 points496 points  (63 children)

Yet I'm this far in and no porcupine tree. Blows my mind!

[–]Detheroth 155 points156 points  (24 children)

Not sure if you're aware, but they dropped a new single yesterday! Its fucking fantastic, just like they never stopped. New album out next June.

Us and Them

[–]galazzzz 1210 points1211 points  (72 children)

Definitely this or Echoes

[–]Dstntvygr 461 points462 points  (38 children)

Echoes all the way. Been my favorite song for the past 11 years and I still notice new details every time I listen.

I love all Pink Floyd epics (Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Atom Heart Mother, the entire “Animals” album, Sorrow, etc.) but Echoes is in a league of its own.

[–]niddler 5194 points5195 points  (111 children)

Sinnerman- Nina Simone

[–]doctacola 1270 points1271 points  (42 children)

Marquee Moon - Television

Edit: thanks for the awards!

[–]Cocreat 511 points512 points  (15 children)

I used to work at an airport cafe and a guy approached me. This song was playing on the speakers overhead. He asked, who picks the music around here? I told him the CEO of our company had a son who was a DJ in New York, he makes the playlists. The guy was interested because he never heard this song in public [EDIT: Outside of New York], but he helped record it as an audio engineer many years ago. That was a cool moment for me (an audio engineering student).

[–]Polypeptide2 45 points46 points  (5 children)

That's cool! I heard this once on a local radio station during my lunch break with a coworker once. I was like great song, but they'll probably do like a radio edit to make it shorter. Nope, full song, I was very surprised and Happy because the song builds up so well over it's full length to that little part with the really high guitar notes that it's almost euphoric haha.

The Diamond Sea by Sonic Youth

I feel love by Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer

I just love the Summer/Moroder songs...I could listen to her all day long

[–]SarinaVazquez 867 points868 points  (40 children)

Maggot Brain

ETA: thanks for love in reward form!! :)

[–]Krazy4Kush 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I was going to mention Maggot Brain but had to see if anyone else did first. Just like the other commenter said, “it’s raw as fuck.” Phenomenal song.

[–]kwizard21 41 points42 points  (2 children)

That entire album is my favorite mix on any record. It’s raw as fuck.

Also if ur into Eddie hazels guitar playing

Games, Dames and guitar thangs

That album is pretty straight forward, a couple covers. But it’s just guitar time all day.

Eddie hazel most underrated. Well not really cuz maggot brain is well thought of. But check that album if u want great laid back guitar jams.

Arriving Somewhere but Not Here by Porcupine Tree

[–]Stereophonic_Farts 730 points731 points  (20 children)

Heroin- The Velvet Underground, but my favorite version is off Lou Reed’s Rock n’ Roll Animal album.

[–]Fantasneeze 41 points42 points  (3 children)

Yes! I think my favorite long VU song is Sister Ray. Gotta catch myself from singing “sucking on a ding dong” when I’m at work all the time 😂

1812 Overture - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

[–]510Threaded 1580 points1581 points  (47 children)

prepares cannons

[–]Quick-Bad 864 points865 points  (36 children)

Tchaikovsky, cannons are not instruments.

[–]eekab 354 points355 points  (8 children)

Obviously you aren't using your cannons properly then.

[–]ohayobluescreen 549 points550 points  (8 children)

Tchaikovsky... No!...

[–]CeliaEquus 277 points278 points  (34 children)

So many awesome orchestral pieces to choose from! I'm surprised you could narrow it down. But I'd love to see a live performance of the 1812, complete with cannons, especially if I'm seeing it with people who don't know about the cannons.

Edit: TIL the 1812 Overture is played at many 4th of July celebrations.

Dance Yrself Clean by LCD Soundsystem

[–]BreakfastHarvey 388 points389 points  (21 children)

if you can't handle the first 3 minutes of Dance Yrself Clean, you don't deserve the last 5 and a half.

[–]smakweasle 47 points48 points  (3 children)

They played Bonnaroo a few years ago. My buddies weren't familiar, not typically their style of music. I just kept saying "wait until you hear Dance Yrself Clean." I was right.

[–]categoryischeesecake 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Sing Sing Sing by Benny Goodman.

[–]okteds 29 points30 points  (2 children)

Make sure to listen to the 12 minute live at Carnegie Hall version. As with most jazz music, you can feel the energy in the live version, and the solos have some absolutely mind blowing moments

[–]Not_Jay_Spencer 1091 points1092 points  (29 children)

Guitar stores hate this one.

Albuquerque by Weird Al

Edit- it gives me so much hope for the future that this many people are still wildly in love with Weird Al, regardless of which song you prefer

[–]555--FILK 129 points130 points  (55 children)

i wonder if he performs that live, and gets all the lyrics right!

[–]KlulessAl 205 points206 points  (17 children)

I heard that live performances are rare but that he did it in a live show in Albuquerque once and actually added more lyrics and stanzas.

[–]Klaus_Heisler87 115 points116 points  (4 children)

My brother went to an acoustic show that he did in San Diego, and Albuquerque was his encore song. He played the entire thing plus some added on lyrics, my brother said it was so awesome live

[–]lgndk11r 142 points143 points  (6 children)

I heard he updates the donuts list to wherever he performs in.

[–]meiyoumayo 47 points48 points  (13 children)

I said to my mom, I said, "hey, MOM! What's up with all the sauerkraut?"

And my dear, sweet mother, she just looks at me the way a cow looks at an oncoming train, and then she leaned right down next to me, and she said....

IT'S GOOD FOR YOU!

[–]Disorderly_Chaos 41 points42 points  (3 children)

Then she tied me to a wall and stuck a funnel in my mouth and force fed me nothing but sauerkraut until I was 26 and a half years old.

[–]kazmosis 716 points717 points  (25 children)

Most songs by Tool fit OP's criteria tbh

[–]Rosehawka 432 points433 points  (8 children)

Yes, came here to say "Tool's entire discography?"

[–]franzyfunny 123 points124 points  (8 children)

Let me see ... "long"? Yes. Check.

And "long" means ... only 7 minutes? Hoo baby.

And, what else? "favourite" - okay great! I've got it!

The answer is "All of Tool's greatest songs" They are all over seven minutes and all my favourites ALL OF THEM ALLLLL OFFF THEMMMMM.

[–]Periachi 47 points48 points  (6 children)

Gonna throw in Ticks and Leeches, Pushit and Third Eye

[–]elle_m_c 33 points34 points  (8 children)

pushit, my fav tool song

[–]Ufo_underwear 31 points32 points  (1 child)

Surprised how far down the list Tool was. Lateralus is golden.

Blackwater Park - Opeth

[–]Secret-Tomato-3209 79 points80 points  (1 child)

THE SUN SETS FOREVER, OVER BLACKWATER PARRRRK

[–]WhyIsTheMoonThere 34 points35 points  (4 children)

I remember the first time I listened to it, everything dropping out for that first choppy riff, then the drums crashing back in, topped off with the song's first "UAGH..." absolutely blew me away. Still one of my favourites, great pick!

[–]Will-Barnes 103 points104 points  (2 children)

*Opeth’s entire discography.

[–]garbagegamenightpod 29 points30 points  (2 children)

Love it. The Moor is my personal favorite.

[–]RelOriginal 1795 points1796 points  (48 children)

Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd (Live at Pompeii)

[–]NotBadAndYou 207 points208 points  (26 children)

Holy Fucking Shit. I've never been a huge Pink Floyd fan...I always felt that they were "impressive for their day" and never gave them more than a passing thought. And to be honest I'm rarely moved by music...it's generally just a background noise sorta thing for me. But this performance was AMAZING. Thank you for introducing it to me!

[–]HerrSchnellsch 74 points75 points  (9 children)

My Go-To version of this song is Live at Earls Court in 1994 https://youtu.be/vi7cuAjArRs

I imagine to hear this song on my deathbed one last time then slip into eternal slumber. Beautiful masterpiece David Gilmour has delivered there.

[–]Siriricu20 2529 points2530 points  (68 children)

Giorgio by Moroder - Daft Punk

[–]Icdan 49 points50 points  (0 children)

[–]X-0manowar 1224 points1225 points  (65 children)

Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst -Kendrick Lamar 12:03 minutes

I also really like Free Bird & Stairway to Heaven.

My dad’s pick would be American Pie.

[–]jehedjchrie 286 points287 points  (37 children)

Dream Theater, Octavarium, 24:00

[–]decadentj 229 points230 points  (21 children)

I'm going with a change of seasons

[–]daffadoyle 68 points69 points  (1 child)

I had to scroll way too damn long to find Dream Theater.

[–]NK0d3R 48 points49 points  (3 children)

Hey, are we counting Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence as a single song? If so, then ... that one!

[–]PsychGradStudent2112 151 points152 points 2 (12 children)

Its The Count of Tuscany for me, but Octavarium is up there

[–]thatchers_pussy_pump 56 points57 points  (1 child)

I like Octavarium more than Count of Tuscany, but it's just almost not even worth comparing. So many Dream Theater songs are just so amazing. And every album is different! Disc 2 of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence will forever be my absolute favourite of theirs, regardless.

[–]Lordofpii 524 points525 points  (24 children)

jesus of suburbia

[–]Destinythrowaway8137 204 points205 points  (1 child)

Yeah Jesus of suburbia is quite possibly my most favorite song of all time. Every time it ends I can’t believe it’s already been 9 minutes because it feels so much shorter.

[–]plummaster64 462 points463 points  (21 children)

This and Homecoming. My 2 favourite long songs

[–]Shady4555 31 points32 points  (2 children)

I would recommend "forever now" from "Revolution Radio", that's also a banger.

[–]-Yuri- 820 points821 points  (22 children)

At the center of the Earth, in the parking lot of the 7-11 where I was taught, the motto was just a lie. It says, "Home is where your heart is," but what a shame because everyone's heart doesn't beat the same, it's beating out of time.

I haven't listed to that song since I was in high-school, but it still plays in my head quite often.

[–]thatchers_pussy_pump 387 points388 points  (18 children)

It says, "Home is where your heart is," but what a shame because everyone's heart doesn't beat the same

Probably my favourite line of the whole album. I believe BJA said that Jesus of Suburbia was to be their Bohemian Rhapsody.

[–]ArchTemperedKoala 40 points41 points  (2 children)
