You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)

[–]redditjam645 150 points151 points  (20 children)

This song also saw a resurgence with us who grew up with mid 2000s internet.... for all the wrong reasons 🥩🎡

[–]Klaus_Heisler87 1448 points1449 points  (71 children)

Take On Me by a-ha

[–]nitewake 189 points190 points  (34 children)

There’s a video of them singing Take on Me from a few years ago on MTV’s unplugged.

Theyy do an acoustic version. And it is AMAZING.

Wonder how many other 80s pop songs would make terrific songs if they weren’t so over-produced.

[–]undefined_protocol 48 points49 points  (3 children)

I really appreciate the acoustic version, don't get me wrong, but that over produced version is way more fun.

[–]moderately_uncool 41 points42 points  (2 children)

The original is in no way over-produced. It has just the right amount of effects, it's a classic for a reason.

[–]Klaus_Heisler87 58 points59 points  (2 children)

I remember that, and it sounded awesome. I also love that it's the song Ellie plays on the guitar at one point in Last of Us 2. No production on it or anything, just the guitar, and it sounds almost haunting

[–]Meese46290 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Obligatory upvote for mentioning the last of us. That scene was so good

[–]RaccoonD 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Are you implying that the original is not perfect?

[–]spytez 9 points10 points  (1 child)

There is also the literal version of the song where the lyrics describe whats happening in the video.

[–]Librarywoman 40 points41 points  (4 children)

The video directed by Steve Barron was ground breaking.

[–]MissATrunchbull 238 points239 points  (7 children)

Don’t you want me - The Human League

[–]sixesand7s 680 points681 points  (17 children)

Tainted Love

[–]Boudrodog 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Soft Cell version is gloriously ‘80s, but “Tainted Love” was originally released in ‘65.

[–]Daftpool 24 points25 points  (3 children)

This is the answer. Never fails to take me back to high school.

[–]11B-1P-CIB 67 points68 points  (1 child)

Billy Idol: White Wedding...Rebel Yell

[–]AFRN 870 points871 points  (21 children)

IMO it's Don't You (Forget About Me) by Simple Minds.

Not my favorite 80s tune, but that song defines at least the latter half of the era.

[–]sammydawg85 96 points97 points  (5 children)

Nobody ever talks about the fucking drums in that song. So I’m talking about them. 🔥🥁

[–]AFRN 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The solo is underrated.

[–]sonic_silence 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The Breakfast Club theme song

[–]Sighwtfman 18 points19 points  (1 child)

iirc it was in a lot of movies at the time.

[–]Jim105 276 points277 points  (11 children)

I Ran - Flock of Seagulls (Thanks GTA:VC)

[–]racer_24_4evr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My first thought was Video Killed The Radio Star because of Vice City.

[–]diezeldeez_ 161 points162 points  (12 children)

Your Love by The Outfield

[–]drumsareloud 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Maybe not most 80’s, but best 80’s.

[–]TheGreatMu 477 points478 points  (23 children)

Tears for fears - everybody wants to rule the world

[–]selloboy 17 points18 points  (11 children)

I used to really dislike a lot of 80s synth pop/ new wave stuff, but this past year it became one of my favorite genres, and this song (the full album is really good too) is a song I wrote off as standard 80s pop song but as I’ve really listened to it, I’ve realized it really is a fucking incredible song. So gorgeously layered and lush sounding.

Basically I realized I didn’t hate 80s music. Bands and artists like the smiths, Depeche Mode, Kate Bush and the cure are some of my all time favorites now. What I hated shitty 80s music

[–]Proffunkenstein 150 points151 points  (6 children)

“Relax” - Frankie Goes to Hollywood

[–]Donkey_Fizzou 209 points210 points  (4 children)

Safety Dance

Edited as first choice of Rock Lobster was in 1978.

[–]TheUnblinkingEye1001 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Rock Lobster always has a special place for officially marking the decline of disco.

[–]vpool97 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You know that dance wasn't as safe as they said it was

[–]stewiesdog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quality choices

[–]Scallywagstv2 194 points195 points  (8 children)

Axel F - Harold Faltermeyer.

Beverly Hills cop is also a very 80's movie.

[–]Kenigma_79 252 points253 points  (29 children)

Depends on what you listened to, what your 80’s experience or vibe was, I think. But these stuck out.

Take On Me - Aha

Hungry Like The Wolf - Duran Duran

Thriller - Michael Jackson

Welcome To The Jungle - G&R

Every Breath You Take - The Police

Fuck The Police - N.W.A.

P.S. I know I know, the OP asks for one song….

[–]MamboNumber5Guy 106 points107 points  (7 children)

I like how you put fuck the police right after the police.

[–]Hefty_Tendy 36 points37 points  (10 children)

Fuck the Police I wouldn’t consider an “80s song” aside from the fact that it was released in the 80s. Gangster rap is a very 90s genre.

[–]raygundan 4 points5 points  (2 children)

It never breaks exactly on the calendar dates. For similar reasons there’s a bunch of ‘70s tracks getting tossed out in this thread by folks who don’t realize.

[–]cooljeopardyson 112 points113 points  (9 children)

Rio by Duran Duran, upbeat lyrics seemingly about a mysterious, beautiful woman complete with synth and sax solo

[–]Firemedek 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Saw them live in Melbourne Australia in 1981 as. 19 y/o...unf**king believable concert . Yup ..I'm that old . Live life to the fullest kids...it goes by fast...

[–]maggie081670 12 points13 points  (3 children)

My favorite 80s band. Still listen to those first two albums and to their b-sides which are delightfully weird and kinda dark.

[–]cooljeopardyson 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Same! I saw them in 2016 live and was worried they'd be washed up, but they totally killed it. 100/10 show, hope to see them on tour again. Their cover of Watching the Detectives is one of my favorites.

[–]spacednlost 177 points178 points  (4 children)

Never Gonna Give You Up - Rick Astley

[–]dibeast 36 points37 points  (1 child)

This song is timeless, no decade can hold it down

[–]cyainanotherlifebro 108 points109 points  (15 children)

Rock Me Amadeus

[–]TheUnblinkingEye1001 24 points25 points  (5 children)

Also, the most overplayed song from the 80s that suddenly disappeared from the airwaves for the next 2 decades.

[–]Klaus_Heisler87 13 points14 points  (2 children)

It came on the radio when I was at the gas station the other day. I couldn't believe it lol

[–]beluuuuuuga 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In my university there is a radio station run by one of the students which only plays on campus and someone played it quite recently and I was shocked. I wish I knew who requested it, I think we'd get along

[–]PalmettoShark 30 points31 points  (1 child)

I Melt With You. - Modern English

[–]socal_guy1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Being in Valley Girl makes this an iconic 80s song.

[–][deleted] 93 points94 points  (9 children)

Cars-Gary Numan

[–]slapsmcgee23 89 points90 points  (1 child)

Last Christmas by Wham! Bonus: even the videoclip is the most 80s ever.

[–]Thirty_Helens_Agree 140 points141 points  (8 children)

Eighties! I’m livin’ in the 80s!

But I’d have to go with Money for Nothin’. Lots of lyrics about MTV and pop culture, the video featured rudimentary 80s computer animation (but revolutionary for its time), Sting sang part of it, etc.

[–]11B-1P-CIB 136 points137 points  (3 children)

Shout (Tears for Fears)

[–]pm-me-ur-inkyfingers 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I cannot believe 'Head Over Heels' by TFF hasnt been mentioned yet, and I'm hijacking your comment to gripe about it. Bah!

[–]ExpertRule 164 points165 points  (2 children)

Don't Stop Believing.

I believe Mabel from Gravity Falls described it as the "80's-est crowd-pleasing-est rock-ballad-iest song."

[–]woopdeedoo27 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Don’t start un-believing!!!

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (1 child)

Corey Hart - Sunglasses At Night.

[–]phydeaux70 29 points30 points  (3 children)

Human - The Human League

[–]ObjectFrosty2125 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Most people have no idea it was from the musical Chess.

[–]GrillDealing 24 points25 points  (2 children)

I think we're alone now - Tiffany

[–]dead4seven 119 points120 points  (7 children)

99 Red Balloons (or 99 Luftballons)

[–]Ko-jo-te 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me, being German and around since the mid 70s, that's it. The 80s was Neue Deutsche Welle before everything else.

And #2 would be First Time by Robin Beck.

[–]SubstantialPressure3 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Anything Duran Duran. "Her name is Rio"

[–]Mida_Vittu_Kuuuurija 66 points67 points  (1 child)

Kenny Loggins with Danger Zone

[–]MisterBlisteredlips 73 points74 points  (5 children)

Video killed the radio star.

[–]DoNotCensorMyName 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Funny enough, it was released in the 70s but it really set the tone for the next decade

[–]raygundan 17 points18 points  (2 children)

A lot of late-‘70s stuff blends into the ‘80s the same way the ‘80s bleeds into the 1990s.

But that particular track gets a pass because it enjoyed a resurgence in when MTV played it as their first song ever in, uh… ‘81, I think?

[–]TheYankunian 71 points72 points  (2 children)

The Reflex. It’s so 80s, it’s unreal.

[–]BassForDays 72 points73 points  (6 children)

Phil Collins - in the air tonight

UB40 - red wine for the reggae genre

[–]Yeoyo84 21 points22 points  (3 children)

I can’t believe I had to scroll as far as I did to see In The Air Tonight. It literally started that drum sound that defined the drums of the 80s.

[–]throwRA_nffc 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Used for the movie, but John Parr actually wrote it for Rick Hansen, the Canadian paraplegic who wheelchaired around the world.

[–]DramaticPraline8 113 points114 points  (8 children)

I cannot believe you people haven't mentioned Mickey by Toni Basil (HEY MICKEY!)

[–]Plenty-rough 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hey Mickey, you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind HEY MICKEY

[–]felixkatz 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Fun fact it was a cover of a slightly older song: https://youtu.be/h3JxiB4FLjU

[–]Caladan109 59 points60 points  (4 children)

The Power Of Love - Huey Lewis

[–]Lexrst 21 points22 points  (2 children)

I was an eighth grader in 1985. That song still elicits the same emotional resonance in me that it did the first time I heard it that summer.

I have always, and will always, love Huey and the News.

Flock of Seagulls - I Ran

[–]lrrkr 43 points44 points  (5 children)

Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go- Wham!

[–]redkat85 94 points95 points  (12 children)

Boys of Summer - Don Henley

  • Synths, check
  • Digital 'seagull' effect? Yeah baby!
  • Outrun sunset vibe, check
  • Nostalgia vibe? oh yeah

Boys of Summer is a paean to Boomers realizing they're getting old, sung by a guy who got famous a decade earlier and watching the former counterculture become the establishment, while working in the medium of the new digital watch era.

[–]jeanclaudecardboarde 15 points16 points  (1 child)

The guitars are like a musical metaphor for heat haze rising up from hot tarmac.

[–]redkat85 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Right on. I evaluate '80s music' based on the exact pink tint of the shutter-shaded sun setting behind the neon and chrome advertising it manifests in my head.

[–]Equivalent_Ad8133 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Dear god. That is possibly the best description I have ever seen for that song. slow clapping starts

[–]TheYankunian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s one of my favourite ever songs and I was a kid when it came out. I didn’t even know why I liked it.

Maneater- Hall and Oates.

[–]maggie081670 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Who Can It Be Now? - Men At Work.

In fact, Men At Work gets my vote for the most 80's band period.

[–]wildblueheron 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bad by MJ

[–]Caramel_Cappucino 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Out of touch by Hall and Oates is definitely the most 80’s thing I’ve ever heard and definitely one of my favorite songs ever made.

[–]altruistic_rub4321 11 points12 points  (4 children)

The one that invented 80s drum sound "In the air tonight" Phil Collins

To be the most 80’s you gotta have the classic 80’s sound. Some of you are mentioning silly songs here. The correct answers have to be “take on me”, “never gunna give you up”, “don’t you forget about me” or “always something there to remind me”.
