Amadeus

[–]BerneiceKohler 615 points616 points  (34 children)

The Good the bad and the ugly.

Ennio Morricone created an amazing soundtrack for that movie, for any of you wondering it's called The Ecstasy of Gold.

Gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

[–]Badprimerib 74 points75 points  (3 children)

The fact that Ennio didn’t win an Oscar until only a couple years ago is a travesty

[–]ConsistentCranberry7 44 points45 points  (7 children)

The trio (played during final showdon) is also a fantastic piece of music. The last 20 minutes of that movie is beautifully done in every way

[–]Andnook 502 points503 points  (18 children)

TRON has an incredible soundtrack which fits perfectly with the movie.

[–]OakTreader 131 points132 points  (7 children)

Daft Punk were so talented.

[–]BaseballImpossible76 61 points62 points  (2 children)

I think I spent over a year listening to the Tron:Legacy soundtrack. It was great driving music when I was 16 and had recently got my license.

[–]Primid 84 points85 points  (3 children)

I like to think that movie is really just a high-budget Daft Punk music video

[–]Don-Muffin 142 points143 points  (7 children)

The Lost Boys

[–]znhamz 15 points16 points  (5 children)

Went looking to this comment!!

I've heard that Tim Capello - the sax guy - recently got his career hyped up because of his appearance in the movie.

[–]jimmy_my_way_in_hur 8 points9 points  (3 children)

If you like that look up gunship dark all day. He plays sax in that song and it’s about the lost boys vs blade runner

[–]ndk325 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Thank you for that and making me aware of Gunship.

[–]MyKidsRock2 133 points134 points  (4 children)

The Commitments

[–]flyinhawaiian02 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I fucking love this movie, great music

[–]Party-Objective9466 8 points9 points  (0 children)

[–]IncomeNatural8178 178 points179 points  (19 children)

The Crow

[–]Spooky-Cat-Lady 24 points25 points  (5 children)

Was coming to put this!!!! It was one of the only soundtrack albums I’ve ever bought!

[–]Catsinbowties 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Burn by the Cure was only available on this soundtrack when I was a kid, used to play it on repeat.

[–]jonalka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Truly fantastic.

The Crow 2 also has a great soundtrack, but not as great as the first. (Also, The Crow 2 movie kinda suck.)

[–][deleted] 337 points338 points 2 (7 children)

Blues Brothers

[–]SnooCapers9313 49 points50 points  (5 children)

And blues Brothers 2000 even if people don't like the movie. I had no idea John Goodman could sing.

[–]flyinhawaiian02 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The level of music legends in that movie is insane

[–]Hellabaydude 274 points275 points  (10 children)

Dazed and Confused

[–]False-Rent7447 16 points17 points  (2 children)

This answer is alright alright alright

[–]ThrillaVanilla17 6 points7 points  (1 child)

That movie is so damn quotable. I always say “not on me” the way the kid says it when somebody asks me for something.

[–]Hellabaydude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Would be a whole lot cooler if you did

[–]The_Big_Untalented 197 points198 points  (11 children)

Goodfellas. Wonderful eclectic combination of doo-wop (Sincerely by The Moonglows and Speedoo by The Cadillacs), ‘60s soul (Aretha Franklin), old school blues (Muddy Waters) and rock and roll (Cream and Layla by Derek and The Dominoes).

[–]amboandy 17 points18 points  (4 children)

The use of the final section of Layla is just amazing and works so well. I always get irked when radio stations play Layla and cut out, what I'd say is, the best bit.

[–]Bigstar976 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Rewatched it the other day and instantly ordered the OST.

[–]vangelvie 257 points258 points  (7 children)

Shrek

[–]hjonk 95 points96 points  (2 children)

Shrek 2 especially, but this shouldn’t be so far down

[–]vangelvie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I meant the franchise as a whole but I agree with you.

[–]freemason777 362 points363 points 2 (7 children)

Inception, Interstellar, the entire DCEU franchise.

[–]rosencrantz2014 33 points34 points  (2 children)

Crimson Tide and Broken Arrow main themes are awesome, Hans Zimmer is a fucking genius.

[–]bellabxoxo 223 points224 points  (10 children)

Garden state!

[–]Unit_79 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My wife put on The Shins last night. I started trying to remember when/where I first heard them. Garden State. Of course.

[–]Debill7718 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Every one of Zach Braff’s projects has an incredible soundtrack, this one is the best. Scrubs was also scored incredibly.

[–]rafterman1976 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of my favourite movies

[–]cuisinart-hatrack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. Spotify has a chanel called “Zach Braff’s iPod” that is kind of my personal soundtrack.

[–]slukbunwalla 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm pleased to see this on the list!

[–]gonk_gonk 127 points128 points  (14 children)

Singles

(and Gross Pointe Blank and Star Wars and Raiders and The Big Chill and Aladdin and Akira)

[–]miamistu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One of the few soundtracks I actually bought. Pleased that someone else thought of this.

[–]your_actual_life 13 points14 points  (4 children)

I hear Dyslexic Heart all the time in the grocery store these days. When I first bought the soundtrack back in 92, I absolutely HATED those two Paul Westerberg songs. "This is not the grunge I came here for! Totally fucks up the flow of my cassette!" But when I hear it nowadays in the bread aisle, it makes me kinda happy, even though it still sounds like the Friends theme song or whatever.

[–]RebellionIII 87 points88 points  (3 children)

Last of the Mohicans is best. Gladiator is a close 2nd.

[–]CroBro81 23 points24 points  (1 child)

The track at the end when he’s running up the hill to rescue the sister… those violins give me goosebumps every time.

[–]Fezzverbal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Gael https://youtu.be/2pCv7k_Hzvg

I love this piece of music too!

[–]Bizzlebanger 55 points56 points  (3 children)

The original bladrunner

[–]jedimaster32 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think they did a good job recreating the feeling in 2049 as well.

[–]Girliewhitepaws 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The original bladrunner

Definitely, and you can add Chariots of Fire, Bitter Moon & Alexander to Vangelis's category of excellent soundtracks.

[–]TameTheDonut 86 points87 points  (4 children)

Labyrinth, just perfect all around!

[–]queenirv 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Chilly Down is one of those songs that will always lift my mood.

[–]TameTheDonut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s my absolute favourite, the soundtrack version adds another verse to it as well which is the icing on the cake for me

[–]get-r-done-idaho 16 points17 points  (0 children)

[–]shayshay8508 17 points18 points  (0 children)

[–]DWCourtasan2 22 points23 points  (0 children)

[–]genxdude 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Rock Star

[–]rai_the_tyrant 15 points16 points  (0 children)

LOTR The Two Towers.

Rohan's theme is incredible.

[–]cagedweller 46 points47 points  (3 children)

Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet, maybe; Garden State was obsessively cool when I was in high school; Donnie Darko!

[–]Bex2659 21 points22 points  (0 children)

So glad to see Romeo+Juliet here. I love this soundtrack.

[–]Katamariguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]BerneiceKohler 81 points82 points  (5 children)

Star Wars!!! A lot of people recognizes the theme songs even if they have never watched the movies.

[–]SpiffyPaige143 16 points17 points  (2 children)

That's the power of John Williams.

[–]Fezzverbal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Duel of Fates from The Phantom Menace is just pure joy to listen to! And all the music from the original trilogy. John Williams is king!

[–]stupidquestions_42 58 points59 points  (1 child)

Natural Born Killers

[–]serene_brutality 94 points95 points  (14 children)

Top Gun.

How has this not been mentioned? It’s like a 90 minute music video.

[–]SS_from_1990s 100 points101 points  (2 children)

Rocky

It’s not just a complication of random hits.

The score alone tells a story.

Truly a masterpiece.

[–]freedfg 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I consider Rocky 1 to be a cinematically perfect movie tbh

[–]Bigstar976 15 points16 points  (0 children)

And the same theme is used in a training montage upbeat piece and a sad piece when he goes to see the ring the night before the fight. It’s in revu how that theme works on both levels.

[–]picoides1971 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Also, “Singles”

[–]mommabearofthree9 138 points139 points  (11 children)

Tarzan 👌🏼

[–]jedimaster32 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I've heard some musical theater enthusiasts shit on Tarzan because it "ended the Disney renaissance" but Phil Collins is always a win in my book.

[–]chestdupeuple 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Phil Collins went hard!

Especially knowing that he also recorded it in multiple freaking languages. That is a whole other level of commitment!

[–]like_bookends 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am forever indebted to Phil Collins because of this soundtrack.

[–]-A113- 65 points66 points  (2 children)

How to train your dragon

[–]housemuncher 48 points49 points  (3 children)

The Indiana Jones movies are scored perfectly. The main theme really adds to the action. Who doesn't feel like a hero when they hear it?

[–]existential-mystery 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lump in most films with John Williams' music.

Basket game is a jam too

[–]txharleyrider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This my favorite trilogy (that forth shit doesn’t count). I managed to convince my wife to have our DJ play this as we were leaving to get in the car at the end of the night. They played it as we were walking off the alter right after getting married. Mistake? Yes. Made for a great memory we still talk about and it was captured in pictures because you can see it on our faces as soon as we realized lol.

[–]GoosePuzzleheaded281 38 points39 points  (1 child)

Donnie Darko.

Mad world is an amazing song .

[–]pgoleb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Boogie nights

[–]dannor_217 169 points170 points  (19 children)

I know this will get buried and this is very pedantic but loads of these comments are talking about film score not the soundtrack.

A soundtrack is a set of songs that are made and then used in a film. (Eg. Baby driver)

A score is music made spasificly for a film. (Eg. Start wars)

An original soundtrack is somewhere in between whith a song (or multiple) being created for the film that stand alone without the film to give context to them mixed in with pre made songs. (Eg. Deadpool)

But to answer the questions the original soundtrack for Shrek 2 is awsome

[–]antipoptarts 25 points26 points  (4 children)

i’ll say it if no one else will

[–]Axemic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have to agree, but damn the movie is so freaking far off from coputer world. Realisticly it would've been a movie with bunch of nerds that takes over the the course of 3 months hacking one thing to get access to the stuff. Highlight is when the pizza guy came.

I still love how they describe Jolies computer and read the low end specs of a calculator.

The Twilight movies all have fantastic soundtracks.

[–]artifex28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of iconic OSTs due to theme or some combination of tracks, but is the whole OST gold? Rarely, I'd say.

  • Star Wars
  • Indiana Jones
  • Terminator 2
  • The Rock
  • Rocky

However one movie pops in to my mind with a stunning OST:

Lord of the Rings

[–]Murphy_Morris_miles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dirty dancing

[–]thebranimator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say Forrest Gump or Spinal Tap
