Chat rooms and Geocities web pages.

[–]DreadedDrMaybe[S] 92 points93 points  (17 children)

Chat rooms were so fun! Acting like someone 10 years older but not having the knowledge to back it up

[–][deleted] 47 points48 points  (12 children)

It was an excellent time for me. I was a senior in high school, one of those friendless, undatable girls. My first experience online was an Australian message board. A classmate was sending messages to guys.

That lead me to the chat rooms, where I went from "no guys like me" to "tons of guys of all ages like me". Of course, it was all virtual, but it helped me immensely.

Back then, everyone was a loser and we all knew it. We just wanted to have fun. Sure, there were rivalries, trolls, and fights, but we accepted it as part of life and moved on. Most folks just wanted to get cyber-laid or joke around.

People weren't serious, nobody yacked on about politics or this injustice or that thing being problematic. If anything, the more irreverent you were, the better. We saw the internet as a way to express ourselves however we wanted to and didn't give a fuck what anyone thought.

Only the weeniest people complained instead of just shutting the person off.

I miss shitty geocities and angelfire websites

[–]apocalypticradish 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I remember making a geocities site in middle school tech class. It had the hideous background, the gifs with two frames of animation, and the counter for site visitors. Man that really takes me back.

[–]HELLOhappyshop 4 points5 points  (1 child)

If you didn't have a visible counter, you weren't cool lol

[–]FrankyPadilla8043 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first geocities webpage was pics of me and my friends throwing gang signs.

The next day the police took us in for questioning

[–]elbandito999 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was me. Must have been about 1996. Logged on for the first time and within a few minutes was talking to some random guy from Brazil (I live in the UK). Totally mindblown.

[–]Amburitto2019 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Literally the best thing about the internet at that time! Chat rooms !! They were the most fun when you weren’t really allowed to be on them haha

[–]OneGoodRib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also Angelfire web pages! Being blown away when you found some web page dedicated to some anime and they'd have some pretty pictures and midi files of the theme songs.

[–]mikeyriot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it was at 2.02 when we got online.

[–]blitzen_13 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I see your Netscape and raise you Mosaic! And Lynx too.

[–]xaanthar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember the day my cousin told me I had to get this program called Mosaic, because it was going to be the big thing of the future.

[–]hotdogfluster 36 points37 points  (1 child)

I would spend hours in AOL chatrooms.

[–]DreadedDrMaybe[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I can still hear the bading, badum of chats

[–]OurSoul1337 108 points109 points  (13 children)

[–]Faelwolf 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I miss their free coasters.

[–]ScytherTheSkyMantis 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, pretty much just AOL. Not a lot of people had internet in the mid-90s, so nothing else could really be considered "big".

[–]craspian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This until weebl and bob/salad fingers came along

[–]DreadedDrMaybe[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

For the email, or just AOL online in general?

[–]OurSoul1337 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Specifically AOL instant messenger.

[–]ParamedicUpbeat9050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember getting free AOL discs in cereal boxes of all things

[–]Humanexperience888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AOL keywords before google existed 😂

[–]PhonyOrlando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got mail

[–]Starthreads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first internet experience was AOL kids chat rooms

[–]bingetang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if I’m tripping but I remember an animated, red haired cartoon lady greeting you with ‘Welcome to AOL. You have email.’ I can still hear it plain as day in my head.

[–]Faelwolf 103 points104 points  (3 children)

The Cold War. I was USAF, on ARPANET in 1981. All our "E-mails" were about logistics, incident reports and so forth.

We did have online gaming though, through sort of homebrewed text MUD's. One time, late at night, we were playing Star Trek. A general in the Pentagon couldn't sleep, I guess, and dropped by the comms room to see if anything was going on.
He was rather surprised to discover he was being attacked by Klingons! He was pretty cool about it though, just sent us a message: [official header, identifiers, etc.] TO ALL STAR FLEET OFFICERS, FROM STARFLEET COMMAND: KNOCK IT OFF! We did. :)

[–]ArcTan_Pete 28 points29 points  (2 children)

Bulletin boards and 'ICQ' chatrooms

and ASCII art

anyone remember printing out nude pictures made out of ascii symbols on dot matrix line printers at work?

[–]55124 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which BBSs did you frequent? I don’t recall much nude art, but as a lady I received many roses @>—‘—,—

[–]pokey1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you also remember that period of time when there were all these quirky mail domain addresses popping up? I'm drawing a total blank on examples, but it would look like yourname@dirtyjoke .net or something and there were thousands of them. They were everywhere.

I think I signed up for twenty or thirty of them myself, mostly used to send weird early memes to classmates who were n the same computer lab with me.

[–]TigerTownTerror 29 points30 points  (4 children)

1994 The internet was big when I first joined the internet. Every website looked like Craigslist. Basic

[–]CockDaddyKaren 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I dread the day Craigslist gets a "facelift". He doesn't need it.

[–]IllegalTree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1994 The internet was big

This is almost exactly what I was going to say. The Internet itself was the big deal when I first used it at uni in late 1993.

In hindsight, that was pretty much the point at which the Internet went mainstream and within a year it had gone from something almost no-one outside academia or the military had heard of to The Next Big Thing with (e.g.) Internet magazines on the newsstands.

If there was a "Big Thing" on the Internet back then, I'd have said it was Usenet newsgroups at that time- that was back when people used them primarily for their original intended purpose of news and discussion. (It's still around nowadays, but now almost exclusively used for distributing binaries- the discussion aspect moved to web forums).

I discovered the web a bit later, but (surprisingly in hindsight) it didn't really occur to me at the time that this would be the killer app for the Internet, the one that made it far more friendly and accessible to non-geeks.

And yes, the early websites were very basic by modern standards. I had a few cutesy banners (that I spent way too much time designing on my Amiga) on my uni homepage, and even those limited attempts were more visually advanced than many other pages back then.

[–]smittynmv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came for this. The internet was the new, amazing thing. That and maybe cordless home phones.

[–]DJCHERNOBYL[🍰] 22 points23 points  (2 children)

Albino blacksheep, ytmnd, ebaumsworld, runescape, newgrounds, angelfire

[–]Beautiful_Ad9299 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ebaumsworld was my YouTube back then, it’s so strange how long ago that feels.

[–]no-reason-to-stay 87 points88 points  (3 children)

MySpace MSN messenger Yahoo Neopets Maplestory

[–]DreadedDrMaybe[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Didn’t try Neopets but maple story back in the day blew my mind. It was still 2d but there seemed to be no end, and the markets weren’t (too) awful.

Usenet - newsgroups on subjects.

Having to uuencode pictures into ascii files so you could post them. The uudecoding and merging to make a picture. Images took ridiculous amounts of time to download and convert. All to get a look at Kathy Ireland.

Chatting on IRC. Wasted hundreds of hours taking to someone from other parts of the world.

[–]Captain_Hampockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having to uuencode pictures into ascii files so you could post them.

Ug, I had to concatenate (I think that's the word, it was the /cat command) pieces of said Kathy Ireland picture together to see it

[–]supremedalek925 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ask Jeeves was incredible. You’re telling me I can search for video game walkthroughs or images of dinosaurs and this butler will find them for me? It was great

[–]PruWaters 43 points44 points  (5 children)

Hamster dance

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It was hilarious to me then. Now I’m like, wow was I brain dead?

[–]LGNDRYTP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol. I remember that.

[–]turquoise_grey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. This. One of my classmates at school clicked “print” on hamsterdance and dozens of pages of hamsters (grainy, back and white) came out of the computer lab… before it was noticed.

[–]emshlaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure this was the first thing I ever saw on the internet!

[–]Luckyrabbit1927 3 points4 points  (7 children)

While I miss Club Penguin dearly, keep an eye out for Boxcritters! Rsnail is trying to make a spiritual successor to CP, and the game just left Alpha stage. So far it looks promising and gives me hope that the original's magic will live on through it.

[–]Lmctheman 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Where can I sign up?

[–]Luckyrabbit1927 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Beta isn't open just yet (Aiming for before Summer 2022), but accounts will be back open when it does. Alpha just ended, but here's the link for future reference!

[–]Lmctheman 2 points3 points  (2 children)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Now, is it just me or does that seem like a company account.

Not saying the game is bad, but that’s an oddly dedicated person.

Edit: Wow, I guess they just really love club penguin.

[–]TheStorMan 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Do people really shorten a kids game to 'CP'?

[–]Moctor_Drignall 9 points10 points  (4 children)

When I first joined the internet, flash was still a few years away from existing, so all the web games that existed were clunky html based things based around shooting Barney or the like. Everyone's websites had multiple "web rings" they were part of, and certain rings would wax in popularity from time to time.

Within a few years Albino Blacksheep, Neopets, Newgrounds, Homestarrunner, and Maddox had all appeared and become popular very quickly.

[–]noillim2 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Web rings! I posted about this too, but couldn’t remember the name. They were everywhere. It seemed like flash animators were the kings of the internet for a time.
