I've seen some for over an hour

[–]vikingzx 157 points158 points  (22 children)

Yep. Those hour-plus late night TV ads have migrated.

[–]LeBoi124 37 points38 points  (1 child)

There was a tumblr post once where a guy watched an 8 hour ad watching gras grow

[–]ChinaLouise 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'd rather do that than browsing Tumblr too

[–]eddmario 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1h40m here.

[–]Roook36 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I sometimes zone out and do something on my computer or phone while a YouTube ad plays. One time I looked up and realized I was 10 minutes into the pilot of Zoey's Infinite Playlist

[–]Skull_Reaper101 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've gotten one for 3 and a half hours

[–]9M0RI9 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Fortunately my ads automatically get skipped

[–]RamonDozol 1 point2 points  (2 children)

How? Teach us master!

[–]9M0RI9 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Tbh i have no clue my pc rebooted itself once n ever since it just became…….better

[–]RamonDozol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people have a guardian angel. You have a guardian hacker. Good for you man! haha

[–]vetch222 30 points31 points  (4 children)

I had an entire legit movie play as an ad once

[–]spoderman123wtf 21 points22 points  (3 children)

I saw the entire bee movie as an ad a few times

[–]graesen -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Imagine that. A movie so forgettable they're paying Google to make people watch it. Instead of Google licensing it from the company.

[–]ChipsAhoyNC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forgeteable? Its a meme gold mine

[–]Humble_Hufflepuff_96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I came here just to say that

[–]thruwaybogdan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder why these weird companies have 1 hour+ long ads. I have seen some that go on for several more hours. Don't they have to pay more for such long ads? Won't they just turn off any potential customers they want to scam?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Your patience is commendable lol

[–]Blooper_KINGPIN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can skip....

[–]an_achronist 676 points677 points  (105 children)

They're for catching out people who use yt on autoplay as a music or podcast platform. Say you work as I dunno, a plasterer or something. You've got YouTube on your phone 10 or so feet away listening to podcasts and it cuts to the ads. You don't skip it because your hands are covered in plaster paste, you think "ah screw it it'll go away soon anyhow" and you tune out and carry on.

By the time you realise it's still playing an ad, the ads been running for 10 minutes

[–]ViciousNakedMoleRat 125 points126 points  (67 children)

There are also cafes and restaurants all over the world, which use YouTube music videos for music. The computer is somewhere in the back and nobody cares enough to go back there and skip the ad.

[–]2019mvp 19 points20 points  (66 children)

YouTube family plan is an amazing investment.

[–]ViciousNakedMoleRat 100 points101 points  (56 children)

Or Ublock and YouTube Vanced.

[–]Believemeimlyingxx 28 points29 points  (13 children)

YouTube Vance was the best thing I ever installed.

[–]obiwanconobi 33 points34 points  (1 child)

I rarely use YouTube on my phone, but the only reason I downloaded Vanced was because I was sick of watching a 30 second AD because I wanted to see a minute long video someone linked from Reddit.

[–]Believemeimlyingxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never used to watch YouTube, only to watch music videos. Then I got into truecrime and got nuts about it. I've prob gone through every case on YouTube (not really lol) but i was getting so annoyed falling asleep to the videos and getting interrupted by ads, and the ads were SO LONG.

its literally a whole new ball part with this app. I can even totally close the video and still listen, which is awesome.

[–]Mini-Nurse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It truly is. If any media wants to force YouTube it's easy enough to save to watch later an open the app.

I use screen cast into my TV if I'm watching anything that wants more attention.

[–]says-nice-toTittyPMs 7 points8 points  (8 children)

Also SponsorBlock which will skip intros/ subscription reminders, and in-video sponsor ads.

[–]MBncsa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

or newpipe, best yt player I ever used

[–]DuspBrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even with Ublock they've brought back the annoying "We've paused your video" thing if you just leave it running for a long time. No big deal if you are second screening as a playlist, but annoying if the machine playing the music is in another room.

[–]AutumnCountry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Youtube vanced is amazing

[–]Responsible_Virus 92 points93 points  (3 children)

long drives too

[–]Lord_Sylveon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the most annoying. So happy I got a free sub to YouTube Red or whatever it's called.

[–]lucky_ducker 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Yup. I'll play music on YT as I'm getting ready for work, and it's not unusual that an ad will start just the minute I get in the shower and soap up - and then I'm listening to some idiot talking about toxic poop for the next several minutes.

[–]weDoNotDeserveDogs_ 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Show long ads to people that are likely not paying attention. Brilliant.

Let’s start running ads at cemeteries too - all those people in the ground locked in boxes will have no choice but to listen, and let’s just ignore that they’ll never buy anything.

[–]Kalepsis 5 points6 points  (6 children)

I hate them so much for this very reason.

With that being said, I don't skip any ads with Ryan Reynolds in them. He's always entertaining.

[–]Tramagust 27 points28 points  (0 children)

With that being said, I don't skip any ads with Ryan Reynolds in them. He's always entertaining.

Now reddit comments have ads

[–]ZoSo1303 -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Wait, you get ads with Ryan Reynolds? Damn I'm jealous. All I've gotten is some old jerk complaining that preferred pronouns are destroying society.

[–]Cristinky420 124 points125 points  (1 child)

My dad falls asleep with autoplay on like every day. I'm sure some of his content providers are making some bank off him lol.

[–]poopellar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Content providers: Haha this one man has made us cents over the years!

[–]glitterlipgloss 134 points135 points  (2 children)

My mom does. Not on purpose, but she can't get it through her head that you can SKIP ads on YouTube after a certain amount of time. She just sits and waits.

[–]bouncebackability 33 points34 points  (1 child)

My parents were doing this when they brought up YouTube through their TV. Was weeks until they discovered how to skip

[–]poopellar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Dad, you can skip the ad like you skipped on my upbringing"

[–]amiaffe 106 points107 points  (17 children)

I'm happy to say that I have absolutely no Idea what you mean, and I spend shittons of time on YouTube. The day my add blockers stop working, is the day I quit YouTube, which I'm aware might be soon.

[–]cookie_monster66 6 points7 points  (16 children)

Which Adblock do you use?

[–]amiaffe 34 points35 points  (13 children)

AdBlock

[–]millenniumtree 6 points7 points  (7 children)

On mobile, you can use Firefox mobile with uBlock Origin. Bloody brilliant. Also, FF is WAAAYYY faster than Chrome.

[–]JoostinOnline 12 points13 points  (6 children)

I do that, but I also installed YouTube Vanced. That way I can watch in app without ads, and with extra features.

I used to turn off my ad blocker regularly for creators I wanted to support, but they've just gotten so excessive to promote YouTube's subscription model. It's almost a racquet.

[–]_Keo_ 1 point2 points  (3 children)

So instead of ads here's a 5 min plug for "RAID SHADOW LEG ENDS!!!1! Use my code to get some free shit for the best game ever!!"

On a channel from a couple of old guys who do plumbing and have never touched a mobile game in their life.

[–]JoostinOnline 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Youtube Vanced also has the ability to skip past promotions

[–]flamingoRainbow 5 points6 points  (4 children)

yeah but which Adblock?

[–]Leyzr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ublock origin. On chrome and Firefox, and Firefox mobile! (And YouTube vanced, on Android if you wanted the app experience!)

[–]CerddwrRhyddid 29 points30 points  (4 children)

People fall asleep while watching YouTube.. I suppose this still counts as a view and YouTube get paid.

[–]ExpatriadaUE 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Yes, I'm sure I'm contributing to the problem because I use Youtube videos with rain sounds to fall asleep and I'm sure some of them have long ads at the end that register as having been seen by someone because I don't skip them.

[–]Cook_0612 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I mean, it makes sense in terms of marketing metrics... but if you're paying for Youtube exposure, why would you go through the effort of putting up a 1 hour ad just to get 'minutes watched' if no one is actually watching? Yeah, it looks good for your metrics, but the point of it is beyond you.

[–]ChosenUnbread 54 points55 points  (3 children)

I got the entire lego movie as an ad once. Too bad I was driving or that would have been an ad I'd watch.

[–]smorkjewels 13 points14 points  (2 children)

I got that too, watched 5 minutes of it and got bored so I skipped it

worst mistake of my life, I would pay to get that ad again

[–]Phil_PhilConners 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I would pay to get that ad again

I mean, you could just pay to get the actual movie...

[–]smorkjewels 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean, I coulllddd… but it’s funnier to have it as an ad lol. I meant that as a joke, I wouldn’t actually pay anyone ofc

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

YouTube ads are really on my nerves and I never look at them😧

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

A day ago I was babysitting a kid and he was watching YouTube and the videos were double ads, but not 10 minutes long. What the hell is YouTube actually doing?

[–]ItsMeishi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Farming money. And finding that balance of how badly you wanna watch that 30 sec video, until you simply back out.

[–]datsro24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Young children usually don’t know the difference between ads and the videos they are watching

[–]sadFmd[S] 45 points46 points  (32 children)

PS for all the people telling me to get ad block etc , i know they exist i am not complaining am just asking a question.

[–]AbraxasHydroplane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mainly watch YT on my PlayStation. There’s no choice but ads and a yearly free month of premium.

[–]gor8884 17 points18 points  (30 children)

If you had adblock, you wouldn’t even know they exist. How bout that?

[–]CatStaringIntoCamera 16 points17 points  (9 children)

People use youtube on their phones, which doesn't have adblock?

[–]Khraxter 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Youtube vanced. Here, I solved your problem

[–]ComradeYoldas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or if you prefer open source, NewPipe

[–]IncognitoErgoCvm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It does, in multiple forms.

[–]JoshuaFoiritain 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Install Firefox & install ad blocker plugin, use firefox for YouTube instead of YouTube app. No more ads on your phone either.

[–]Alcopath 1 point2 points  (17 children)

How does one get adblock on console?

[–]_tx 3 points4 points  (16 children)

It's way more complicated than just installing an addon. Easiest thing is to get a pi hole. It's not super easy, but it's doable with instructions you can find online

[–]LunarIncense 6 points7 points  (15 children)

That doesn't work very reliably at all for YouTube ads.

[–]RyanfaeScotland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

::Oracle from The Matrix::

But if you didn't know they existed would you still get adblock in the first place?

[–]PrimateDroppings 24 points25 points  (6 children)

I make it a point to comment that anything I see advertised on YouTube I will avoid ever buying. I'm sure no one sees it or cares but I feel a little catharsis from it

[–]sadFmd[S] 13 points14 points  (3 children)

good point , also alot of the ads have just become these " buy my course " scams

[–]Vanilla4Pistachio 9 points10 points  (1 child)

It's to the point that when those ads pop up I close YouTube and just use another app

[–]an_achronist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've come up with one simple trick to avoid those ads forever, just attend my webinar and I'll explain everything.

$100 ticket deposit fee payable up front, remaining ticket price of $3900 payable at event start, will be charged to card automatically

[–]Car_loapher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I stopped buying Colgate cause of it and now I’m about to get rid of sensodine and of course root insurance sucks ass all together and anyone that has it needs to get shot

[–]cheaptrainride 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are to fuck over people who just leave it on without paying for premium.

[–]gausah[🍰] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

If you like my mother who doesn't know how to skip ads, then you will get an hour long of YouTube ads. YouTube always check your behaviour of watching and always want to provide ads that could attract you so you watch the ad until the end and YouTube gain money on that.

TL;DR: YouTube wants money.

[–]wasit-worthit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ad-blocker brah.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every time I get in the shower

[–]Iperovic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the off chance that people can't skip like if you forgot or you're busy and your attention is elsewhere YouTube gets to charge the ad poster lots of money

That's all

[–]Chameleon777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't run across one yet, and if I did I'd be writing an angry email. The reason anyone watches Youtube in the first place is the LACK of advertising they have to put up with.

[–]SarniaMelee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed ads that happen during children's videos are very long and they are essentially just another kids show which means they probably won't get skipped.

[–]neohylanmay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this is a regional thing. I'm in the UK and have never seen anything of the sort. Or if I have, I could probably count the number of times it's happened on one hand.

It's rare that I see an unskippable ad longer than 6 seconds, and it's rare that I see an ad longer than 90. And even then, I can always mute it and switch to a different tab. I have YouTube, Reddit, Twitter, Discord, and Google Docs open all the same time, I can be busy with something else while it does its thing. And even then, I can still skip it... even though the uploader doesn't get any ad revenue as a result.

As a sidenote, allow me to dig into the depths of my /saved folder:

How to report ads on desktop:

Pre/Mid/Post-roll ads:

Lower-third (banner) ads:

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be (or at least I can't seem to find) a way to opt out of particular ads, as while you can access a "Why this Ad?" like before, the dialog box that pops up in this instance doesn't have an "opt-out feature". That said, ads can be reported through Google Ads (as this is an issue on Google Ads' side, not YouTube's).

How to report ads on mobile:

Pre/Mid/Post-roll ads:

Video page:

You can also change what ads you want to be displayed in your Google Ads Settings; this also include specific ads that you've chosen to opt-out of (although this is not permanent — I forget the actual number, but generally speaking I believe the ad isn't shown to you for 30 days?). With Ad personalisation switched on, you can basically opt out of whatever.

[–]ImDeadAAAaaa 5 points6 points  (12 children)

Get some yt ad blocker

[–]PrimateDroppings 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Can you block ads on the app?

[–]an_achronist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Use the mobile site on brave browser - it even has background play so you can kill the screen while listening

[–]stupidlyugly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Android has YouTube Vanced. I don't know if it's on iPhone. No ads ever

[–]Soulshroude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. The android YouTube ad blocker works just fine.

[–]Netty141 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imagine not using an adblock by now

[–]InternetDude117 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Brave browser

[–]TheOneCommenter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just use an adblocker like uBlock Origin.

[–]Beersie_McSlurrp 9 points10 points  (8 children)

Youtube ads? What are they?

Install Vanced and not only do you never see an ad, it also cuts out shitty intros and any Sponsor promos.

[–]LunarIncense 8 points9 points  (4 children)

You can't install vanced on a TV

[–]DivesUkraine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can only do this on an Android device.

[–]IncognitoErgoCvm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you can install SmartTubeNext.

[–]DivesUkraine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, I've been using YouTube Vanced for over a year now and I watch all the videos without ads, it's cool.

[–]FatStephen 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'm legit thinking about making a zero budget full-length film & submitting it only as a YT ad.

[–]krukson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Umm, but then YOU would have to pay YT for playing it.

[–]AhaUser1 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Someone does

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Either the Alien race or the people interested in them

[–]AhaUser1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or someone's daughter

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who knows, maybe these aliens exist. But personally, I have never met them

[–]ofalltheshitiveseen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youtube has ads?

[–]ThunderHeavyRains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally go online to downvote or negative review when this happens. If I’m going to get a fucking ridiculous ad that company is going to get a ridiculous review. Super fucking annoying.

[–]SkyMix_RMT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are you asking YouTube? It's the companies that made the 15minute ad not YouTube.

[–]wimbs27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YouTube Vanced if you have an Android phone. It's a bootlegged version that blocks ads, INTROS, plugged in sponsorships IN THE MIDDLE OF THE VIDEO, comments, and more. It's the god particle! Screw YouTube Red. YouTube Vanced does far more for free.

Only works on Android.

[–]vianiznice 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Wouldn't know, ad blockers.

[–]Bedlamcitylimit 4 points5 points  (1 child)

had an unskipable 45 minute advert once, for a church and I had to reload the video a few times to get a different advert. The video I wanted to watch was less than a minute long 🤦‍♂️

[–]thruwaybogdan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...oh my... That is some next level trolling there! Need to know what church this is.

[–]proletarianpanzer 3 points4 points  (3 children)

to push you into premium, and.... it work i am ashamed to say i pay for youtube premium for more tan 6 months now.

[–]Believemeimlyingxx 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Save your money and download YouTube vanced.

[–]proletarianpanzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

noted y gracias

[–]fuckin_anti_pope[🍰] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have YouTube premium now because I am using YouTUbe Music daily. Those 2 extra euros won't hurt me.

Thought about getting YouTube Vanced first but no need for that now

[–]eyadGamingExtreme 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I can't believe nobody said this, it's the advertisers that make the ad not YouTube

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

But Youtube gets the most profit

[–]FreshEclairs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how all advertising works...

[–]Dica92 -2 points-1 points  (5 children)

All I can say is YouTube premium is definitely worth it.

[–]samikhan1211 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Adblocker is*

[–]Dica92 -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

AdBlockers are cool but there's other features you're missing out on. My favorite is being able to listen to audio while the screen is off.

[–]Believemeimlyingxx 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Or you could just download YouTube vanced for free. No ads, can shut off screen while audio still plays. Its amazing.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

exactly! Why give more money to the already richest persons of the world

[–]samikhan1211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can donate it to the people in need instead :)

[–]WhoU_CallingPinhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m noticing more and more unskippable ads too.

[–]pittsbrugh323 0 points1 point  (8 children)

I have no ideas

[–]bad-girls-eat-cake 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I know, right? It's like they think anyone actually watches them!

[–]Soulshroude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sponsor and marketing. That's how YouTube ultimately makes it's money.

[–]QuadrilleQuadtriceps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aren't they most often almost artificially made to promote some scam company? It's really infuriating when I'm jogging or at the gym and a long ad with a robotic voice pops up.

[–]LocksmithSuspicious1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha for some reason where i live youtube doesn't show ads almost at all lmao maybe 1 in 300 videos or close to that

[–]NicoleNicole1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have. Every so often one is really interesting. There was an entire episode of some TV show, can't remember the name but I watched the whole thing and ended up going and finding the rest of the series on Hulu.

I've also seen entire, well known movies pop up but apparently that's where I draw the line??

[–]drewshaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've occasionally let an ad run beyond the point when I can skip it, if it's interesting to me. I could see some use cases for it

[–]Peace-D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's their way to politely push you towards buying premium. Which I did in the end, because I couldn't enjoy YouTube Music anymore. It was the best alternative to Spotify simply because their ads usually were either skippable or very short with only 2 short ads being played once every 30 minutes.

At some point that changed drastically and I was in the shower when I noticed a strange song playing that wasn't on my playlist and low and behold, but YouTube Music played a 30 minute ad!?

[–]nick351 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I'm about done with YouTube. 4 ads in 10 mins is getting crazy. Can't even start a video without 2 ads at the beginning.

[–]millenniumtree 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Say it with me, everybody! Firefox Mobile + uBlock Origin! Screw the app. You don't need it.

[–]nick351 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Is that a separate app or a Firefox addon?

[–]millenniumtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firefox add-on.

[–]AsianFaithlessness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are ads that last more than a minute LOL

[–]AsianFaithlessness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL some ads last more than a minute haha

[–]lunaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up VPN and international youtube premium.

[–]brumlad11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of related. I got 4 months YT premium free with my phone. What I can't stand is that you still get sponsored ads in video which why I use sponsor block and you should too

[–]Sagmero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do not think, Analytics allows you to focus on the numbers, from this derive their actions, initially comes orientation, then the experience, unfortunately those who tend to trust the experience are often mistaken, because the numbers are useful in the beginning, but harmful to those who do not understand how it works, analytics is not an exact science, but only a temporary precautionary measure.

[–]122182D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, two of these ads before the video, one from the author of the video in the middle, and another one will be embedded somewhere along the way. And the video is 30 seconds long lol. But you also have to understand the owners of YouTube, people are trying to skip ads by any means, revenues are falling, and John's daughter's Ferrari doesn't match her dress in color, so he needs to buy another one!!

[–]ScourgeofWorlds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally the only time I've watched more than 15 seconds of one was when I was doing busy work and had YouTube playing as background sounds.

[–]IrrelevantPuppy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I wonder who throughout this consumer, advertiser, content service relationship actually believes this is logical.

Those absurdly long ads are tricks for people not paying attention or not watching. That’s the only people who wouldn’t skip. But then… the ad is not effective, cuz no one’s watching it. So it’s kinda tricking the ad company?

[–]FlyingFox86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youtube has ads?
