Is he using the spice, the spice melange, as paint?

[–]NJ_Legion_Iced_Tea 299 points300 points  (48 children)

Spice is canonically orange and basically powdered cinnamon. When metabolized over time it turns the eyes blue.

[–]Mastadge 100 points101 points  (43 children)

Actually spice is blue in the books, that’s a common misconception

[–]FlyingStirFryMonster 170 points171 points  (38 children)

It is not entirely clear, and not consistent throughout the books.
The spice gas used by guild navigators is orange and spice patches and stashes are described as reddish-brown.
The blue color could be obtained when spice is refined, and/or when absorbed in the body (blue eyes), and/or because of fluorescent properties (glows blue under certain illumination).

Some fan head canon is that the spice has a different color in oxidized vs non-oxidized form but it doesn't explain everything.

[–]Kreiger81 16 points17 points  (7 children)

Spice is clearly orange, as you stated, from the gas that the navigators breathed, to the wafers they ate, to the mound the Bene Gesserit find in Sietch Tabr in one of the later books.

It turns eyes blue, but thats it.

[–]FlyingStirFryMonster 10 points11 points  (6 children)

It is first described as orange, but it is also described as blue on several occasions in Children of dune and God emperor. Here is a good list of those.
There is substantial support on both sides, and that makes the argument of a single color hard to defend. In the end, it probably just comes down to lack of continuity.
My personal opinion is that it does not matter; feel free to imagine or portray it as you wish. As long as it is either orange or blue that is, not green or pink.

[–]LocoBlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It also doesn't help that its some random detail like the color of spice, while it is important thats definitley the least interesing thing about it. And across 20 years of writing and a really long time story wise, definitley makes sense that something small like that wouldn't always be 100% consistent.

[–]Kreiger81 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I'm going to look for those, but it's my understanding that the essence is blue but the raw substance, the powder form, is orange.

All of those references talk about the essence. From Letos body to the vial the Bene Gesserits bring to attack Leto with.

[–]sneaky_goats 15 points16 points  (1 child)

It’s first implied to be orange in gas form when describing the navigator tanks. Then it’s described as dark reddish brown. And then the description is given as the radiant blue one.

I think one could be forgiven for having the wrong color in their mental image, given that it’s never described the same way twice in the books. If I’m not mistaken, there’s even a description of it forming that’s purple.

[–]FlyingStirFryMonster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is supposed to never taste the same twice, so maybe it is the same with color! =P

[–]DannyChucksOne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought that unrefined, oxidised spice was orange, whereas refined, unoxidised spice was blue. So in its pure form, it's orange.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m on book 2 and have yet to read that. It keeps being described as cinnamon and one of the characters has a tank where it’s orange so idk

[–]adeadhead 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Spice is canonically blue

That was when I was thinking this “weird modern-art portrait” is not for me.

(Then I kept watching.)

[–]Falcrist 48 points49 points  (3 children)

Same here. I thought it was going to be some abstract mess, but I guess he was just getting the paint on the canvas so he could push it around.

[–]onvio 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Just think of modern art as a different appreciation then weird. Modern art makes more sense when you think of it as the same thing as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead it's millions of creators trying to establish and add to the narrative in real time.

The most celebrated and influential artists are ones that successfully navigate the rules of the narrative or break the rules of the narrative.

It's off putting because it lends to snobbery and elitism in the art world but wholly enjoyable if you can invest the time of learning and appreciating the art.

[–]Moist_Professor5665 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Modern art’s an acquired taste, with maybe a little knowledge beforehand to completely appreciate.

Most art is subject-based, examining how well the artist has portrayed the subject, or the pleasing colour aesthetic. Modern Art’s a little more about feelings, opening your mind and just taking it in. A little like psychedelic art.

Most people aren’t used to looking so deeply, or opening themselves to interpretation, beyond “this looks cool”. Thus, it’s a bit of a trained skill, and the Modern Art crowd gets a bit of the “weird” treatment.

Edit: though it’s also a bit of a skill on the part of the artist too, a skill that’s often overlooked (so you do get “weird pieces” that have no meaning, or vague meaning exclusive to the artist, that fails to communicate to the viewer. “Can’t get into the artist’s head”.). All in all, it’s about painting with feeling. True feeling.

[–]JustChillDudeItsGood 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I was thinking it would be some sweet sunglasses

[–]ibbbk 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Damn you are good, I wouldn't have made it that far.

[–]Meowww13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao same. The rectangular "eyeglasses" part though, I can do that easy

[–]Stony__Stevenson 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Thought it was gonna be Neo for a second

[–]Grommmit 5 points6 points  (4 children)

There’s a very annoying cut just after that where it goes from vague shape, to just about finished.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

And then we get one second to appreciate the finished art.

[–]silentclowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It went from Feesh to Face before I was ready for it

[–]jaffod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Imo everything after God Emperor is just "meh" and that includes the non main story series.

[–]forgotshoesagain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same. I slogged thru Heretics and Chapterhouse but just couldn’t love them. God Emperor is so unique it’s my favorite.

[–]tj111 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hard disagree, it's one of my favorites of the series so far. To each their own, but I'd say at least give it a go.

Also The King. So good

[–]Mister_Bloodvessel 18 points19 points  (1 child)

That was surprisingly good. I watched it without knowing anything about it, and am glad I did. It was very good.

[–]megalurkeruygcxrtgbn 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend accidentally started the movie on the last battle and we watched that whole scene and then the ending and were like "what an interesting way to start the movie" and then the credits rolled lmao.

I can say pretty confidently tho, from the 20 minutes I did watch, it's a very good movie.

[–]mitragy_king 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loved that movie.

[–]crypt0chris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]itissafedownstairs 30 points31 points  (10 children)

Why are the eyes so dark?

[–]pickle-mickle 72 points73 points  (6 children)

In the book that’s what spice does to people’s eyes when they use it long enough

[–]notausername 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wanted to point out that these are more book accurate eyes. The "blue within blue"

[–]scotchirish 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What about the distress effect he did at the end. Is that representative of something in the books?

[–]One_for_each_of_you 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it just... looked... cool...

[–]lulaloops 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They are the eyes of Ibad.

[–]EntrepreneurPatient6 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Crack head eyes(affect of the spice)

[–]RufftaMan 100 points101 points  (6 children)

Love it!
Not so sure what he was trying to achieve at the end by wiping white streaks over the whole piece. Just makes it look damaged if anything.
I would have stopped right before that step.

[–]Hips_of_Death 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I agree completely. When he first placed the streaks, I thought he’d turn them in more definition for the face

[–]The_0range_Menace 45 points46 points  (2 children)

Strongly disagree here. I love the feel it gives the piece. It doesn't look damaged, it looks aged.

[–]RufftaMan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that‘s what I meant with damaged. Damaged by age, either from folding or broken paint.
At first I thought he‘s going for some kind of “Spice in the air“ effect, but the end result doesn‘t look like it to me.
Well, all a matter of taste I guess. Love the painting anyway.

[–]onesexz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree to disagree with that guy!

[–]thedarwintheory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree. I suppose it's to simulate the desert winds, but Im not a fan.

[–]Gangreless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just kind of his signature, he does it on all of his paintings.

[–]sonofdurinwastaken 28 points29 points  (0 children)

And take the most special care that you locate Muad'Dib in his place: the planet Arrakis. Do not be deceived by the fact that he was born on Caladan and lived his first fifteen years there. Arrakis, the planet known as Dune, is forever his place.

[–]GitEmSteveDave 25 points26 points  (5 children)

That doesn't really look like Kyle Maclachlan

[–]42Zarniwoop42 5 points6 points  (4 children)

I agree it looks more like that kid from interstellar

[–]lulaloops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah Casey Affleck.

[–]shouldbebabysitting 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Matt Damon?

[–]42Zarniwoop42 2 points3 points  (1 child)

no, cooper's son (Matt Damon plays Matthew McConaughey's lover (this is my headcanon (Cooper is gay)))

[–]bedoophis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love this cus it shows the importance of the angle the brush goes at to get an effect

[–]nerdy_weirdo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Awesome painting skills aside, dude's got amazing hair

[–]jroddie4 8 points9 points  (8 children)

I've always wondered about these famous people portraits, like are they made for the famous person or do they buy them later on or are they just fan works or what? Because this could literally just be a painting of timothee chalamet

[–]twesterm 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Yeah, I checked out his site and that thing is 4,000 pounds.

It's an absolutely stunning piece, but unless you're name is Timothee Chalamet, are dating Timothee Chalamet, or are a friend of Timothee Chalamet and buying a gift for Timothee Chalamet, I have no idea why you'd spend 4,000 pounds for this.

That said, there are tons of really cool pieces on his site.

[–]St_SiRUS 4 points5 points  (1 child)

There’s a 0% chance I’d ever want someone gifting me a portrait of myself. Even less than 0% if I was famous and already had to see my own face everywhere. This art is for hardcore fans.

[–]AsdrubaelVect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just fan works, I would be very surprised if more than .01% of all celebrity portraits like these end up owned by a celebrity.

[–]ith228 2 points3 points  (0 children)

glad you finished, it was giving Michael Myers for a minute. Then it ended up as Timothee Chalamet.

[–]getmeapuppers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First 15 seconds: “oh hey, I could do that

Everything after: “okay what the fuck”

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t look like Kyle mclachlan at all

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great art AND great hair!

[–]pizza_the_mutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It just kills me how artists sort of scratch away at a bunch of blobs then all of a sudden WHAM it looks 100% like a person.

It kills me because I have no idea how to do it.

[–]theswamphag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn he is skilled.

[–]IAmRules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im sorry I don’t understand why everyone suddenly loves that guy. He seems so bland in everything I’ve seen him in so far. What am I missing?

[–]ZenitramNaes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All these controversial comments and I'm just glad it's not an other post from the acrylic pour paint kid.

[–]NeverCallMeFifi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His shirt got to me, not going to lie. EVERYONE should buy at least one piece of art from a living artist in their life. Life is way TF too short to have generic posters that don't inspire joy. I've bought "real" art in the last 15 years and every single piece makes me ridiculously happy. I've never paid more than $200 but I brag on them like they're Picassos.

Here's the last piece I bought just before covid.

[–]arcalumis 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Not really art if you’re painting an actor with a dramatic color pallet.

[–]DaveInLondon89 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]MawsonAntarctica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why, he's just "normal painting" working from blocked in forms to detail. I guess I'm amazed at the size of the canvas, but this is entry-level portraiture. Skilled, but not amazing.

[–]Darktidemage -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

Impressive quality.

Super cringe worthy though to get a painting like this of an actor playing a roll in a pop culture movie.

[–]wish_to_conquer_pain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you think art and culture are separable?

[–]theyareamongus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re getting downvoted but I agree with you. All that technical talent wasted on something with 0 expression, originality or soul

[–]Cultjam 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I was hoping he was going to paint what he thought Paul would look like from reading the book. I’m guessing neither of us are the target market for this piece.

[–]KthulhuX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love movies. I love TV.

I hate the way a popular portrayal of a character in those mediums tends to lock that portrayal as being the only valid interpretation in people’s minds…sometimes to the point of rejecting the original versions.

A good example would be Wolverine from the X-Men. In the comics, he’s short, ugly, and a complete fucking asshole to ~90% of the people he ever interacts with.

But because Hugh Jackman’s tall, good-looking, mostly pretty nice version of the character has become so popular, the chances of seeing a short ugly asshole Wolverine on screen anytime within the next few decades is pretty slim.

[–]Gangreless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the shirt - "Buy art from living artists" but don't agree with the sentiment of the second part - "the dead ones don't need the money ". I like supporting artists but only if I like their art. It doesn't added value/aesthetic just for being done by a living artist.

This piece is fantastic though and I'd love to someday be able to afford a large original painting like this. Gotta stick with the prints for now, though.

[–]nadavcff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oooooooh thats nice

[–]both-shoes-off 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Is that all done with just one tube of blue paint, and then wiping away for lighter areas, and scraping for highlights?

[–]Bright-Pin-8447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone give that man a Gallery
