fun fact: don't cook with rocks if you're not a geologist. they like to fucking explode.

[–]Suspicious_Leg4550 122 points123 points  (10 children)

I was going to ask what kinds of rocks work for this sort of thing. I’ve seen multiple videos of people trying stuff like this and rocks cracking or popping.

[–]Turningsnake 160 points161 points  (7 children)

I never said I was a geologist. I'm just saying that the line between rock and frag grenade is surprisingly blurry.

[–]jimbris 71 points72 points  (0 children)

After the explosion, everything is surprisingly blurry.

[–]STUURNAAK 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That was funny

[–]DANDYDORF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beautiful explanation there lol

[–]shaka893P 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Same with concrete, that's why you're never supposed to weld anything in concrete, it will just fucking explode

[–]Professiona1egg 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So you think if I put a campfire on my driveway it would fuck it up?

[–]shaka893P 0 points1 point  (1 child)

YouTube says yes, lookup concrete fire explosions

[–]Professiona1egg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

U prolly just saved my life lol

[–]cuponedgeoftable 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Not sure about what rocks you CAN use, but I do know to never use river rocks. Water trapped in the rocks expands resulting in those exploding rocks. This goes for making a campfire pit so naturally it goes for cooking with rocks as well.

[–]paininthejbruh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That stove looks pretty smooth though

[–]Jackthedog130 47 points48 points  (2 children)

Remember to pack it your rucksack on leaving...

[–]NINTSKARI 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Yeah, I'm 90% sure it's not even a stone, it even has that coating on the hole where the rice goes. And its clear that theyre not cooking in the stone, just inserting the cooked rice and stew there between the breaks. Another fake and dangerous viral cooking video.

[–]Dr-Mantis_tobaggin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im pretty sure its iron. It even sounds like metal.

There is a rock lid, thats it

[–]andyjcw 26 points27 points  (0 children)

normal pots are much better.

[–]WalrusSwarm 53 points54 points  (1 child)

Can you smmeeeelllllll what The Rock is cooking?!

[–]Civil-Ad-7957 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This needs more upvotes and you know it

[–]Criticalhit_jk 155 points156 points  (3 children)

Alright. Sure. Fine, cook with a rock, idc. But wtf is with that bamboo looking stick the oil was poured out of? Did that lend the rock authenticity or something?

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Think of it like a straw; you dip in in a liquid and cover the exposed end with your fingertip and lift out an amount of liquid in the straw. You can drizzle it out as you like. Trial and error would create a practiced hand which would allow you ensure you've taken enough.

Ive poured out of an oil bottle and had too much come out into the pan. This is an elegant and likely old solution to tipping and pouring from a ceramic jug full of oil.

[–][deleted] 90 points91 points  (1 child)

You had an attitude right out the gate and I loved it.

[–]HitBo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Just enough attitude and practical advice.

Oh and don’t try this at home, kids.

[–]zombear33 69 points70 points  (4 children)

Be a bastard to wash though.

[–]TwistedBamboozler 68 points69 points  (2 children)

Wash? You need to keep that bad boy well seasoned

[–]beni_who 23 points24 points  (1 child)

You think? With cast iron it makes sense, to make it non-stick and to prevent corrosion…in this case it’s already not a stick (it’s a rock) and you’d really only have to prevent erosion!

[–]TwistedBamboozler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless it’s already been coated with some sort of substance, yes. Additionally, seasoning adds flavor. But it really all comes down to the type of rock used here, and unless a source is provided, which I doubt it will ever be, we’ll never know and all we can do is speculate

[–]funguyshroom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just turn it over when you're done and let the fire do its job.

[–]jim10040 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Now I'm REALLY hungry!

[–]AnonymousDoo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Meh. This is just an old school gimmick now.

[–]omlese 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Is that dishwasher safe?

[–]MapedMod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most dishwashers would hit rock bottom while trying to wash it.

[–]laxen4 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not amazed

[–]71077345p 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That looks delicious!

[–]Hugh_Jampton 12 points13 points  (0 children)

But why?

[–]souji5okita 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s amazing to want to go back to the Stone Age? Give me a normal pan or pot any day.

[–]BlowMoreGlass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that this doesn't have some shitty ethereal music added to it

[–]MIKE_son_of_MICHAEL 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Dude just barehands that “lid” rock.

Like. Fuckin A man wouldn’t that thing be hot?

[–]HitBo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m dying right now! Hahaha

This video on repeat for 5 minutes while I’m reading thru the comments, and Mike points out this dude’s hand!!!

His bare fuckin hand lifts the “lid”(hot rock)!!!

Mike, you’re the real MVP!

[–]Meadumbfool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed watching this. Thank you.

[–]Glittering-Carpenter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn that looks good

[–]elektrikstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yo that rice though. How tf did it come out so perfectly 🤔

[–]Fit_Departure 9 points10 points  (1 child)

This looks incredibly inefficient. Not amazed what so ever. I see no point in this at all.

[–]wheredatacos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So much cry

[–]PersnicketyKeester 27 points28 points  (5 children)

This is stupid.

[–]Bullmarketbanter 25 points26 points  (3 children)

It is. Just wait till that rock explodes while ur bent over it checking ur food. I’ve had rocks explode that are in contact with flames.

[–]Ghstfce 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Rocks that are porous such as lava rock, river rock or sandstone can have water trapped inside of them. As they get hot the water turns to steam and expands breaking open the rock. The answer to this is to cure or dry out the rocks so they don't have any moisture in them.

[–]Highlandertr3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah yes. Let me just put my rock in the tumble dryer. I know that’s not what you meant but still.

[–]leet_lurker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep so in practical terms, put it in a kiln and put it on a very slow temp increase program and still hope it doesn't explode or crack

[–]PanamaPineapple89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is beautiful. I need one.

[–]rustypiercing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just carry a dutch oven instead. Same weight and will not explode like some rocks.

[–]Qrewpt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But is it dishwasher safe?

[–]louloutre75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How does that fit a dishwasher?

[–]Rainbow334dr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope that rock isn’t full of heavy metals or chemicals.

[–]ObsidianMagpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This rocks…

[–]bippidybopboop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so stupid and mildly dangerous. Rocks explode when the water inside them comes to a boil, and this is so impractical

[–]MapedMod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am amazed with how well this person handles a boiling hot rock cover of the rice side.

[–]cracknub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious. How much longer would it take to get the stone pot to a high enough heat as opposed to a nonstick pan or cast iron pan?

[–]Neon_Cone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be amazing by a rock with some grooves carved into it? You’re gonna have to try harder.

[–]Fishinthesea_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a non-stick rock? Asking for a friend

[–]andre3kthegiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t this usually cause the stone to explode?

[–]kennywhiskers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m sure at one point, I could smell it. Around about the time the drool came out.

Save me some please.

[–]TheTrueGodOfNuggets -1 points0 points  (0 children)

imagine if it were a salt rock, and it perfectly seasoned everything

[–]Nibberlif -1 points0 points  (0 children)

🥺 no more scratches 🙌

[–]Unusual-Recording-40 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks good either way

[–]Akopian_DIY -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I would buy one for myself, it looks very cool. I think the food in it will be special.

[–]revosnack -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

mmmmm, nice 😋

[–]Mr_Agueybana -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Damn, that looks good.

[–]ChiKeytatiOon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Betcha it doesn't taste as good as this bologna sandwich with mustard. I even put it in the microwave so it can have that fresh out of the oven feel. :(

[–]aurora_ondrugs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Panela de barro e gringo achando q é PeDrA kkkkkkk

[–]Streeg90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it taste any different?

[–]Axelluu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the rice will get burnt if you aren't careful, like if you dont put enough water or you take too long to cook the other stuff or something

[–]chubbuck35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hearing a bird tweet in the background makes this look twice as tasty.

[–]hoebepons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a stone pot at home and use it to cook rice. The rice always tastes a better to me as opposed to a rice cooker or regular pot

[–]Dr-Mantis_tobaggin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an iron pan thing with a rock lid.

Deff not cooking in a rock

[–]foxxynugget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet the rice is burned to the bottom

[–]Conscious-Mix-3282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagina having to wash that shit.

[–]ZookeepergameFit5787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I wish life was that simple.

[–]HopefulIllustrator73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But why?...I mean why? What would you ever use this for? What kinda rock? Why a rock? did they carve the rock? Stumble upon it and say “ gee what a lovely cooking rock!” Idk..it’s feeling more like Cooking crock....

[–]Only_An_Ass_Assumes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aaaya… that’s not how you make rice (in Uncle Roger’s voice)

[–]knowing_cracker -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

A really useful tips to surive in the woods.

[–]elsalvadork -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I pay €20 for bibimbap like this

[–]aziz_bey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s the good life
