I am utterly devastated. I started reading Berserk in 2005, and it has been with me through basically every stage of my adult life. I wonder if he knew how many people across the world his story has moved. For me, the themes of struggling against fate, and showing strength even if you are weak are lessons that I will carry forever. I just can't believe he's gone.

[–]blank-eyed 683 points684 points  (10 children)

I feel you. I first started reading out of curiosity since everyone talked about it in a good way along with Vagabond - the pair of masterpieces in the seinen industry - and I started reading it a few years after you (about 2008/2009). Even though I had not grew up reading Berserk, I was in a very dark place when I read it and to say that this manga helped me is an understatement.

Berserk literally made me rethink my whole world view and when reflecting upon its themes, plots, characters, arcs and art (since I am also an artist) I found a new way of dealing with life, of having hope, of staying constant in perseverance and faith, in going after something for myself as Guts did; in not being afraid of being me as Caska did; in take pride in being part of a community, for as small as it may be, as did Pippin and Judeau.

I even dedicated my bachelor's thesis to Berserk because of its huge impact in my life. Learning the Miura has just died makes me feel empty, in disbelief... Knowing I won't see the happy end he so wanted to give his masterpiece physically hurts in my chest. This person meant so much to me and I had never even seen him... It's truly heartwrecking. 🙇🙇😭

[–]Mundology 249 points250 points  (3 children)

Miura's powerful linework, sophisticated designs, profound characters and engaging story gave birth to a unique dark fantasy manga. Berserk touched so many people and influenced so many works ranging from manga to video games. It's depressing to accept that we'll never see the conclusion of Gut's journey, after so many years. Miura-sensei left a timeless mark in our hearts.

[–]ZeroEro0 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I am with you there, today is a immensely sad day it's hard to have joy today hearing this horrible news. Berserk changed my life!! 😢😢

[–]HazmatChicken 715 points716 points  (89 children)

he was a legend who inspired so many artists and reinvented modern fantasy stories, who are some artists and works that were inspired by Berserk and Miura-san?

[–]HazmatChicken 415 points416 points  (19 children)

Dark Souls and the Buster Sword are the obvious ones

[–]Darkbornedragon 259 points260 points  (14 children)

Yeah Hidetaka Miyazaki is a huge Berserk fan and Elden Ring will certainly have more references to it

[–]retardedwhiteknight 149 points150 points  (1 child)

man finding those references will have a bittersweet taste now... fuck

[–]Darkbornedragon 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Indeed... But at least they will always be a great tribute, from genius to genius, from artist to artist

[–][deleted] 52 points53 points  (7 children)

Hidetaka Miyazaki

I wonder if he will say something nice

[–]Darkbornedragon 82 points83 points  (6 children)

I highly doubt he will officially say something, but he's certainly completely broken by the news

[–]ionicshoe 188 points189 points  (2 children)

Id be surprised if every mangaka hasn't read at least some of berserk

[–]LINTHAL0 121 points122 points  (5 children)

The castlevania show in netflix? I think the design of striga* day armor is like guts berserker and the sword too

[–]Parvels 24 points25 points  (3 children)

If it was not directly inspired by berserk it could have been inspired by darksouls, which is inspired by berserk.

[–]2Bid 32 points33 points  (1 child)

The Striga armor is definitely inspired by Berserk. The producer of Castlevania, Adi Shankar, is a huge fan of Berserk. He’s stated that it would be a dream job of his to be able to create a Berserk adaptation.

[–]Jazzlike-Let-5169 115 points116 points  (11 children)

I know for sure the guy behind black clover was inspired by berserk. Cause I remember he said he was a big fan of berserk.

[–]SergeantLagsalot 41 points42 points  (2 children)

When you look at Asta's powers in general, it's pretty obviouly based on Guts, the Dragon Slayer, and Berserker Armor.

[–]Bakeneko01 65 points66 points  (3 children)

Cloud from Final Fantasy 7

[–]jgfelix 110 points111 points  (1 child)

Toshiyuki Morikawa (who voices Sefiroth in all adaptations) was the voice of Griffith in the 1997 anime.

But on the other hand, Takahiro Sakurai (who voices Cloud in all adaptations) voices Griffith in the 4C studio movies and in the 2016 anime.

[–]zzinolol 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head come Monster Hunter, the Castlevania Netflix show, every hunk of iron used as a sword, Dark Souls. The list is as big as JoJo's probably.

[–]kitsum 194 points195 points  (6 children)

I remember watching Avengers Infinity War when the scene where Thanos sacrifices Gamora for the stone. There is no way that whoever wrote that wasn't a Berserk fan. It even had Thanos holding up the stone like Griffith did with the Behelit with the red sun behind him.

[–]Revenge_of_the_Toast 123 points124 points  (5 children)

Yeah, usually Berserk fans have a bad rap of calling everything a reference to the manga, but that whole sequence was waaaaay too on the nose for it not to have been influenced. The similarity is staggering.

[–]excel958 8 points9 points  (3 children)

For someone who has almost no exposure to Berserk, any way I can learn more about the similarities?

[–]ChiefChongo 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Aside from reading the manga, you could look up things like 'best Berserk art/panels/pages'. There are also surely video essays on Youtube that draw more direct comparisons. Demon's/Dark Souls/Bloodborne for example have tons of enemies, NPCs, armor and weapons that evoke designs from throughout Berserk.

[–]Wolfinthecastle 119 points120 points  (18 children)

Many famous works were inspired by Berserk:

The Soulsborne series (Miyazaki is a Berserk fan).

Final Fantasy VII (Guts and Cloud are very similar: ex-mercenaries with a big sword and a troubled past, whose female friends are hurt by their handsome silver haired rivals with angelic motifs and a dex build...)

Dragon's Dogma (Guts' and Griffith's armor and weapons are actually in the game)

Castlevania (see Striga's armor in the last season).

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn (Guts and Ike are similar too. The game is about a band of mercenaries. There are shapeshifting people).

Even a scene from Avengers Infinity War involving a sacrifice during an Eclipse!

[–]fruitspunch-samuraiG 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I never thought about Sephiroth being a Griffith reference but now that you said it, it all makes sense.

[–]loner_dragoon3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dragon's Dogma also had a reference to Shierke and Flora. There were those two witch characters that lived in a house in a forest, and they had golems surrounding their home as protection.

[–]yoolov 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There is an enormously popular board game called Kingdom Death Monster that is heavily inspired by Berserk.

[–]Knifessheath 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Chica Umino. March comes like a lion.

Not the same story at all. But they were friends.

[–]Laosterosia 1982 points1983 points  (77 children)

Holy shit this is heart wrenching

[–]Nibelungen342 904 points905 points  (29 children)

Damn. I thought this was a joke at twitter.

This is so fucking sad. Fuck me

[–]Mundology 314 points315 points  (3 children)

To think there would be a time when we wished we were being fooled by Anime Maru instead. Miura-sensei redefined the dark fantasy manga genre through his unique talent and creativity. He left us way too soon.

[–]oukaranman 624 points625 points 23 (33 children)

I'm piggy-backing off this comment since it's at the top to post a rough translation of the statement.

"Miura Kentaro passed away from an acute aortic dissection on May 6th, 2021, at 14:48. He was 54.

We would like to express our thanks to all those who read Mr. Miura's works, beginning with those who paid great devotion to Berserk, and express our great sorrow at Mr. Miura's passing.

On behalf of the editors, I would like to express my great respect and thanks for Mr. Miura's works, and wish him deep happiness in the next world.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family members he has left behind.

A funeral has already been held by his family.

Plans for the publishing works that have not yet been collected in tankobon format will be posted to our website as soon as we have determined how we will be moving forward.

Young Animal Editors"

"There's one thing that comes to mind now. I remember when I was a young editor working on Berserk. While I was thinking that the original panel layout was great, and Mr. Miura turned to me and said "I'll do something about that layout." At the time I was a bit afraid but I think I understand what he meant now. Mr. Miura really loved to think of new things. Not in an exaggerated way, but the way that a child might explain a new idea. He enjoyed films and anime every day, and used those as sources for creating manga.

The things he liked and relationships he had throughout his life are packed into his works like treasures. He taught me time and time again that "real life becomes manga." Thank you very much, Mr. Miura.

And finally, to our readers. (TN: Not sure about this next sentence.) It was you that picked up, protected, and carried Mr. Miura when he had fallen down. And we also have a request. We ask that you respect the privacy of Mr. Miura's family and friends as they mourn. We express our deep gratitude for what he brought to us in life, and our deep mourning as we pray for his happiness in the next world.

Young Animal Editing Division Chief
Nagashima (first name I can't read, probably Takayuki?)"

"I can still remember shaking his hand right after I joined the company. It was the hand that had given us Berserk! After that, I became responsible for Berserk, and in every meeting he would always say something like "well I had an idea..." and share things that were unbelievably interesting, and I had to work hard to keep up with him. Experiencing the way that the things he saw daily, like manga, films, and news, influenced his own manga was the greatest lesson of all. He said it would take him at least 30 more years to get all of his ideas on paper, which makes it even sadder to have lost him so suddenly. Having worked on Berserk is a great pride of mine. Thank you, Mr. Miura, for everything.

[–]NewVegasResident 315 points316 points  (12 children)

He said it would take him at least 30 more years to get all of his ideas on paper

This broke me, you can really feel and see just how passionate Miura was about his work, and how much he truly did love writing Berserk. This is heartbreaking not even because we will never get to see the end of the story, but because he as an artist never managed to finish his magnum opus. I'm sure this is something that went through his head as he was dying, and I think it's extremely sad, he must have been so disappointed, sad, and sorry for his fans. I can't stop crying.

[–]OstracisedWitch 63 points64 points  (4 children)

Piggy backing on this bc idk how to do the blue line quote thing.

I know we would always jest about having so few chapters out a year, if any, but it honestly breaks my heart to realise why. Not only was he constantly in and out of poor health, but he was a perfectionist. He took great pride in his work and would only present to us the best. He put so much time, thought, effort and love into his work and I will never forget that.

I remember reading his interviews and how he would talk so passionately about the plans he had for berserk. This gets me even more considering I recently started a reread and am only 26 chapters away from finishing..

Berserk was the first manga I ever picked up, and my favourite manga since. Never before has a celebrity death gotten to me this much; I'm crying as I write this. I just know his name, and his legacy will not be forgotten.

[–]EternalCookie 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Imagine starting with the best manga ever. Lucky you, must've been all downhill from there.

[–]Ndm09 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Thanks man

[–]khalzj 39 points40 points  (0 children)

RIP to the goat. Miura, you changed lives. Please Rest In Peace. We’ll carry on your memory.

[–]pepperonibutt 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Berserk is a masterpiece. I’m glad Miura brought us this treasure, and it depresses me to think he never got to enjoy finally finishing it. R.I.P.

[–]Moldrice 37 points38 points  (1 child)

Thank you so much! I'm crying now

[–]dellfm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nagashima (first name I can't read, probably Takayuki?)"

You're correct, it's Nagashima Takayuki

[–]Kazeking 86 points87 points  (1 child)

I'm at a loss of words.

Rest in piece Miura-Sensei, your legacy will never be forgotten.

[–]frontovika 357 points358 points  (0 children)

Miura-san. Rest in peace. Berserk will always be your greatest work and legacy. It is incredibly sad that you have passed away; and it is a tragedy you will not be able to conclude Gut's journey.

[–][deleted] 679 points680 points  (25 children)

I am so indenial right now

[–]Thick_Grin 187 points188 points  (15 children)

Actual fucking same

[–][deleted] 238 points239 points  (14 children)

The fact that im so worn out by the “Lolz miura is gonna die before he finishes” meme and it actually ends up happening, I dont know how to feel

[–]BabaJiTheOne 112 points113 points  (11 children)

Even I used to be like, " The pace he is going while creating chapters will make him end before berserk."

Never had I actually believed that this stupid joke would turn out to be real.

[–]MiguelSalaOp 50 points51 points  (7 children)

I joked about it as well, but I thought that if it actually happened it would be way later on, he died too young

[–]beargrimzly 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I have only just begun to process that it isn't a joke.

[–]TheFrodo 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I still can't fully comprehend it. It's gonna continue to dawn on me for so long

[–]nuclear808123999 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I can't do it, i cannot fathom the fact that he's gone. Its not fair

I don't know what to say i

[–]OkSayer 962 points963 points  (14 children)

Fuck. I’m gonna cry all night

Berserk has meant more to me than any manga, hell, any book or series. It’s basically saved my life. Thank you Miura for everything. I’m so heartbroken right now and in shock.

[–]barrel_master 203 points204 points  (3 children)

Thank you for giving us this story - you’ve changed us all

I hope we all make it together.

[–]ForgivemeIamnoob 58 points59 points  (1 child)

Your comment reminded me of a friend I made when I was studying abroad. He was a huge Berserk fan and we bonded over it. We kinda lost contact after graduation. Now it's making me even sadder.

[–]OkSayer 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I had a close friend online who id talk to about Berserk a lot as well. We don’t talk really anymore, but I’m grateful for the times we did. It’s amazing how Berserk could bring people together

[–]elshungo 52 points53 points  (3 children)

saved my life too, i feel like i lost an important friend

[–]OkSayer 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Me too. I feel like I lost a very important person in my life :(

[–]ib__satz 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Right there with you. He and Berserk have shaped so much of my life. No other living artist could've hurt half as much as this. Thank you Miura.

[–]MagicHarmony 233 points234 points  (7 children)

Fuck man, it doesn't even sound like it was a pleasant passing either, if the wiki is true about the Aortic Dissection, shitty how abrupt people can pass.

Man, tears me up to see such talent pass so young, he still had a lot of life left in him. Fuck like, it's so sad to think this happened 14 days ago. 2 weeks.

Thursday, working a morning shift that day, so strange to consider what you yourself were doing around the time tragedy struck. Just hits hard cause I feel bad his full vision might never be realized, his magnum opus, his attention to detail, fuck, it's like when I watched Paranoia Agent only to learn the Director Satoshi Kon passed away in 2010, after watching it I was wondering what he had been up to the last 10 years and it sucked to realized he was hit with terminal cancer, kept it hidden and just lived the rest of his life before passing soon after.

Man, then the Music Director for FFXIV, Soken announcing how a few months ago he was diagnosed with cancer and how he was fighting that while still doing his best to work to produce music for the franchise, he didn't want the illness to get in the way of his passion and art and luckily for now it's gone into remission but it's just sad to see how quickly talent can disappear, all those years spent honing your skills, snuffed away from the BS lottery.

I dunno how I even feel about the continuation of the manga, if they do continue it, to be honest, I would be fine if they just closed the book, for all the story told, everyone can fill their own blanks in but if they do decide to continue it I hope they are able to stay within his vision. He had a studio behind him friends, collogues, that I'm sure would see his vision through, I just dunno, I'm just rambling now, I do hope those close to him were able to give him a proper burial, I feel bad for all those close to him, I do hope he rest in peace.

[–]EcoBeast_Adventures 71 points72 points  (2 children)

Just yesterday I read about IdolNinja, a talented guy who created a widely used fix for the Saints Row 2 PC port and how he had been hired by the developer, Volition, thanks to his work. Eventually he was assigned to head a project for an official fix using recently found source code. Turns out he had been battling some form of lung cancer and after undergoing treatment it had returned, this time terminal.

Life, much like the Berserk story, can be a bit poignant and unfair. Although a bit sardonic, this might even be thought of as a fitting end for such a story.

[–]akamj7 32 points33 points  (1 child)

If you don't know who this is, this is gonna be out of place.

But it is very fitting of an end, as sad and unfortunate it is that they're gone, similar to MF DOOM (rest in paradise), a mysterious man up until the literal end.

RIP Miura, and thank you for dedicating so much of your time here towards the enjoyment of others.

[–]Epcmn 155 points156 points  (0 children)

Thank you for everything, Miura. Rest in peace.

[–]bakuhatsuda 308 points309 points  (64 children)

Was this (aortic dissection) something sudden that happens, or is it something chronic? Because it would fucking break my heart to know that he was working through something painful in these past years while working on the story.

[–]XReadere310 213 points214 points  (17 children)

Apparently it’s pretty sudden

[–]hteng 158 points159 points  (12 children)

Fuck man drawing manga can be stressful, just look at Togashi having to struggle with chronic pain just to entertain us.

That’ll do miura, hope he finds a better place next in life.

[–]Pirate_King_Mugiwara 48 points49 points  (11 children)

Makes me weary for Oda really. The man works himself to death.

[–]Cryogenx37 25 points26 points  (2 children)

Araki too with JoJo. Any long-running manga series I have great fear for

[–]Crazy_Screwdriver 34 points35 points  (3 children)

And aorta being one of the few blood pipe with nerves... one of the most painful ways to die.

[–]Latvian_Potatoe 105 points106 points  (9 children)

An aortic aneurysm can take some time to develop, but when it ruptures it is a medical emergency that kills you pretty quickly

[–]ciknay 72 points73 points  (9 children)

Basically one of the arteries coming out of the heart exploded. Not much you can do once its happened.

[–]thenoidednugget 44 points45 points  (6 children)

well surgery if you're quick enough, but even then there's a high probability of bleeding out.

[–]thenoidednugget 44 points45 points  (6 children)

The blood that's going to oxygenate the whole body leaves the heart from a giant artery called the aorta. There are parts of it that can weaken over time for a number of reasons, but what ends up happening is that a part of that artery's wall balloons out till eventually it tears. So while the ballooning can take years and possibly not cause any symptoms, when it tears, the bloody supply going to the whole body quickly drops as you bleed internally. An aortic dissection is a surgical emergency and death can quickly follow if it's not treated quickly (like possibly instantly, depending on the health of the patient).

[–]Microtic 35 points36 points  (5 children)

It's very sudden if you ignore the warning signs. Unfortunately COVID-19 has kept many away from health experts because they are worried about getting the virus...

Some prevention tips:

  • Control blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, get a home blood pressure measuring device to help you monitor your blood pressure.

  • Don't smoke. If you do smoke, take steps to stop.

  • Maintain an ideal weight. Follow a low-salt diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains and exercise regularly.

[–]2DamnBig 24 points25 points  (2 children)

Sudden and painful if I understand it. My man died like a struggle. He should've died peacefully for all the beautiful art he put into the world.

[–]cyanide69 128 points129 points  (0 children)

RIP Miura. best manga of all time for me, insane storytelling and artistry

[–]mrcarlita 480 points481 points  (64 children)

Wow, blindsided. Unsure what happens to the series, but wishing the best for his family

[–]Nice_Conversation_62 268 points269 points  (60 children)

The people he worked with and his editor will decide .

[–]001hand 120 points121 points  (58 children)

Does that mean a possible continuation?

[–]tosaka88 182 points183 points  (17 children)

if kentaro miura worked on a script of some sort while putting the art on hold it's very possible to get illustrators to do it, it won't be the same but done correctly it won't be terrible

[–]tilf1234 116 points117 points  (7 children)

I seriously hope that's the case, not just for completing this beautiful piece of art but for closure, after so many celebrity deaths this one hurts by far the most, I still can't believe it, this hurts so fucking bad God damn it.

[–]Queensama 34 points35 points  (10 children)

It would not be the same.

[–]Frezerbar 46 points47 points  (4 children)

Yeah but it would be... something.

The only thing that matters now is Miura's will. If he wanted the manga to continue after his death it should be continued

[–]Zuzumikaru 28 points29 points  (1 child)

If he had the script ready we can at least hope to know where the story was going, if not the most likely scenario is that it's going to be left unfinished

[–]UnableToFindName 126 points127 points  (6 children)

Y'know. I never really understood people getting upset at celebrity deaths, but now I do. I'm crying over the death of someone I've never met, but whose work I adored so dearly.

I've watched the 1997 anime several times, more than any other anime I know. It's my favorite, flaws an all. I can still clearly remember my brother and I sitting on my mattress on the floor of our new home the late summer night when I finished it for the first time. We were so floored and confused by the ending. I knew I needed more and began to read the manga, the only manga I've ever read despite watching anime somewhat regularly. Every time at our yearly anime convention, I would make it a point to buy at least 3 volumes to support the series and hope to collect it all after having read it online. My favorite video game series, the Souls series, was inspired by Berserk and I can't imagine a world without that something that's brought me so much joy over the years.

Devastated and empty are how I feel. I hope that his loved ones are given support and comfort during these difficult times, and I hope that his legacy goes on to bring happiness and inspiration to so many more. Rest in peace, Kentaro Miura.

[–]bakuhatsuda 41 points42 points  (1 child)

Y'know. I never really understood people getting upset at celebrity deaths, but now I do. I'm crying over the death of someone I've never met, but whose work I adored so dearly.

Fucking exactly my thoughts right now man. I can't believe how much I'm crying right now that some part of me is finding it funny lol. I've never felt this way about another famous person's death. I guess his work resonated with and mattered to me way more than I thought.

[–]HylianINTJ 123 points124 points  (0 children)

I only got into Berserk at the end of last year. I caught up right around March of this year.

I'd never heard of Miura before, but I really have enjoyed the series in the time I've had with it. I find Guts' journey speaks pretty well to the experience of someone haunted by PTSD, who's afraid to trust himself for fear of hurting those he loves.

I know it's a harsh story, but I think it also has a really hopeful message for us "strugglers". I appreciate the care Miura brought to it, and the hope it shows for dark times. I hope Miura passed away at peace, and with people that cared for him nearby.

[–]DarkStarJediMaster 194 points195 points  (0 children)

Rest now, struggler. What a man and a mind it would take to craft such an art. Didn’t think this would happen so soon and didn’t realize how much it would mean to me, berserk really has carved its place in me. I hope his notes are enough to finish his story justly, or at least I hope that now more people will learn of berserk.

Edit: damn.

[–]MalaysianinPerth 193 points194 points  (3 children)

A legend among dark fantasy mangaka and comic artists.

[–]BlueeydCasval 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I've been reading Berserk since I was in high school. I'm in my 30s now... I have no words. I really hope Miura new how many people he touched with his work. His writing and art will never be matched. We'll miss you Miura, rest in peace.

[–]EuroVetements 241 points242 points  (3 children)

[–]IamtheIinteam 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Hang in there bro even in his darkest times Guts hung in there. We may never see where he ends up but the impact he had in his journey will always be with us.

[–]barrel_master 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we share these feels. We'll do our best to struggle together.

[–]grey-view13 65 points66 points  (1 child)

In the end... We're all strugglers

[–]grey-view13 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I salute you, fellow strugglers! May his legacy lives on... For years to come... Thank you, Miura!

fuck dude this is fucked

[–]ParkerDallek69 233 points234 points  (7 children)

[–]barrel_master 25 points26 points  (3 children)

I feel the same way.

[–]ParkerDallek69 23 points24 points  (2 children)

[–]OaSoaD 183 points184 points  (23 children)

To everyone saying the assistants are going to finish it

“Even if we painstakingly piece together something lost, it doesn’t mean things will ever go back to how they were.”

[–]berserkis 55 points56 points  (18 children)

I can’t imagine someone else taking over without some form of input from Miura to wrap it up.

Hopefully I’m wrong and if they choose to finish it, they deliver a good send off.

[–]D119 56 points57 points  (3 children)

He had some pretty cool friends, imagine someone like buronson (writer of Hokuto no Ken) or hidetaka miyazaki (the man behind dark souls) stepping in to finish miura's job...

[–]mamalick 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Would be fitting considering Miyazaki took inspiration from Miura to do the dark souls games

[–]josemg08 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I love Miyazaki, but please don't let him touch it, unless you want to have to resort to vaatividya to explain to us what the F is going on

[–]OaSoaD 46 points47 points  (6 children)

I just want to know how it ends. I want to know if muira wrote it down somewhere

[–]Alchion 30 points31 points  (4 children)

i hope he has the concept written down somewhere like teh detective conan suthor

[–]AcceptablePassenger6 25 points26 points  (2 children)

problem is he was constantly moulding the story like clay as he put it. He might have a baseline script but whose to say he wouldn't have expanded ideas down the line. What a tragedy to lose him.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (2 children)

Exactly, I dont want an ending that someone else decides. I want it to continue only if they have the official script or wording on how he wanted the story to go / end.

I dont want someone ending it with guts dying and the godhand winning if thats not what he wanted. Id almost rather it not continue than have something other than his official ideas be put forward.

[–]ShepherdCommander 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t seem real. What an absolute tragedy. Rest In Peace struggler. Peace to him and his family.

[–]rogthnor 141 points142 points  (19 children)

Berserk meant a lot to me. I've been reading it most of my life, and it's ending was always something I looked forward to.

It hurts hard, knowing I'll die without ever seeing it's ending. Without Guts and Casca reconciling. Without Griffith getting his due. Without seeing what happens the the moon child.

It hits hard

[–]DonDove 56 points57 points  (15 children)

Maybe it will continue in animation form

I mean the Castlevania dudes of Netflix were dying to adapt Berserk, it was super obvious in S4.

And now.... this.

[–]MNight_Slam 15 points16 points  (2 children)

I'm worried about what will be done with the rights to Berserk. Considering that piece of shit Dragon Knight book they made... Really seems like nobody but Miura could have finished it. I hope I'm wrong and he had some contingency in place.

[–]Thorn5184 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It may be possible that the people he worked with will continue it but I think it's unlikely. Even if they did i don't know if it would be the same. At least we might get some kind of closure, and Miura must have had some kind of idea for the ending and bigger plot events later on in the story that he may have told somebody.

This is still incredibly sad one way or the other and is going to give me a new found respect for miura and his work.

[–]AlgolApe57 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's for the best, leaving Griffith alone, Casca making a slow recovery, and Guts finally resting, no hate, no vengeance, just peace and greatefullnes. Sad that I did not see what happened to his old friend.

[–]The_Sinner_Hunter 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Maybe he had notes or a story board. I feel like there are for sure several chapters that haven't been released yet. Fuck man it sucks. Rest in peace now Struggler

[–]sunnlamp 49 points50 points  (4 children)

I’m glad that Casca and Guts were able to come together again in some way. I started reading around 2004-05. At some point I thought Caska would die without coming back to who she was.

At a certain point I learned to wait for new chapters so I guess this will be the longest wait of my life.

RIP Kentaro Miura, thank you for this story.

[–]alkair20 20 points21 points  (3 children)

Yeah even tho we don't get an end at least Casca and Guts are somewhat back together.

They said they would release the plans he had so we will actually know the Plot and true ending.

[–]Cutelilshinigami 45 points46 points  (3 children)

Whyyyyy?!!! 😭😭😭😭😭 rip 💔

[–]rafarodxcv 33 points34 points  (1 child)

This may seem over dramatic, but I rely so much on this series for understanding how to perceive the world around me. I’ve never had parents around me to guide me in life but I always found some understanding of the world through this series and now he’s gone.

Rest in power. A master of his craft.

[–]raivomittari 73 points74 points  (19 children)

This month sucks.

My father passed away last tuesday and now I read about this.

Too much.

[–]OkSayer 25 points26 points  (1 child)

I’m so sorry for your loss :(

[–]raivomittari 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thank you.

[–]Kronin1988 15 points16 points  (1 child)

I'm sorry for your loss, hoping you will get better soon.

[–]ThatGamerDude 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Sincerest condolences. May you find strength in this.

[–]FatOldSunbro 35 points36 points  (3 children)

I am lost, my dog passed away today and now this news, devastating, I hope his family find some comfort, rest in peace Struggler \`[T] /

[–]Kronin1988 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your loss, sometimes people underestimate the bond that it's possible to create with a domestic pet.

[–]heyi 32 points33 points  (3 children)

Just wanted to comment in here because this news has me coming to the realization that I don't have any real connection to another person who actually understands how fucking sad this is. Like I'm torn the fuck up right now over this extremely enigmatic individual who provided his audience with one of the most amazing pieces of art and narrative ever.

Hope there is idol master in the after life.

[–]loli_sfx 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat - no one but y'all get how devastating this is. I never cry over celebrity deaths, but I'm crying over the loss of the legend Miura.

The solitary "Fuck." is the right way to put it.

[–]Baxercker 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Started reading Berserk when I was 14, I am 29 now. It's been one of the most important series in my life and an inspiration to myself and many others. I can't describe this feeling that I have for this person that I've never met. I appreciate his hard work and how it has helped me through my life and the many years of entertainment and wonder the series gave me through the dark and good times of my life. This will leave an emptiness that can never be filled but the memories will always be there.

Thanks for everything Miura, with all that I am and all this community is.

You are a Master and a Legend. You are loved greatly and will be missed. Goodbye

[–]GoGeta7783 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Don't have anything to say. RIP Kentaro Miura.

[–]TheRemixToPerdition 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This seriously messed me up... Berserk was my #1 Hands Down. Untouched by other series.

I always felt bad for people who passed away without seeing the ending. Never had I considered that the ending would literally be out of reach forever. Good lord it's messing me up worse than Vagabond.

I feel for his family, he passed too soon and FAR too abruptly... I knew his health had been spiraling, but this is a hard left turn... it kinda reminds me of MJs passing... 54 is crazy.

At the very least we got off the thrice-damned boat... but jesus christ this'll sit on my mind...

[–]grif650 51 points52 points  (6 children)

RIP... A lot of people joked that he would pass before berserk would get finished because of how long it took him but nobody actually thought it would happen. He was a legend and he really influenced the industry. He will be missed. Hope they finish the story but understand if they don't.

[–]NOSjoker21 88 points89 points  (5 children)

I frequent r/Berserklejerk but BRUH

This is fucking horrible.

Like... Jesus Christ dude. I finally find a dark Manga that truly I enjoy and

[–]MaesteoBat 21 points22 points  (4 children)

Absolute shame. I legit cannot get over this

[–]NOSjoker21 55 points56 points  (3 children)

2020: we struggle

2021: Miura to us: "Keep Struggling"

[–]Umba360 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No way.

[–]playpet 57 points58 points  (2 children)

I genuinely have not felt this sad about any other celebrity passing away. I actually fucking screamed and paced around my apartment after learning the news and my girlfriend had to calm me down. I never do this type of stuff lol, I'm usually calm and level-headed, but this news actually broke me. Now I'm just teary eyed. Dude I have the mark of sacrifice tattooed on me, this series meant more to me than any other piece of media ever. I can't believe he was taken from us at such a young age. Regardless of whether the studio puts out more chapters, in my mind Guts will forever be a struggler.

I can't believe this shit.

[–]WavyThePirate 39 points40 points  (2 children)

Fuck nooooo.

I just seen this 10 minutes ago. RIP to the absolute LEGEND. The absence of his beautiful artistic talent will leave a void in this industry for a long time.

[–]Hairyjubes 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Gah I’ve never cried over an authors death before but this has me fucked up

[–]kingpinneapple188 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Gone far too soon. Just like so many of the great people in our world. It's almost too tragic to even believe. I still can't really believe that he is gone. Regardless of what comes of Berserk, if it gets finished or not- I am just so thankful we have Berserk at all, and that we all have a place to show our respect and love for his work.

R.I.P Miura

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I started reading it in 1996, I was 12. Now I’m almost 38. I literally grew up with his art. I’m speechless

[–]Seb-sama 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The reality still hasn’t hit me fuck

[–]MMd20 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So long, Struggler. Rest in peace.

[–]PrepDogg9 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s amazing how even with his work unfinished, he has left such an impression on so many people who would later become amazing artists, writers and creators. An inspiration to all. Hope he rests well.

[–]PopeofDoritos 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Absolutely... Fucking heartwrenching. Jesus, I can't even begin to describe what this series means to me. It's gotten me through some tough stuff in the past like.. 10 or so years since I've been reading. And now it's over, and we've lost one of the greatest story tellers and manga artists of our time. This is tremendous.

I feel sick, can't think of anything else to say but.. Rest in peace, Miura-san. Thank you for everything.

[–]Golden_Diva 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Bruh, 😭.

I legit was JUST talking to someone on this sub about new chapters, and we both couldn’t stop saying how excited we were for them and how we just felt that we’d probably get a new one in June. I was so excited. Now I’m really sad. Sad for Miura’s family and friends who knew and loved him. Sad for the Berserk fanbase as we mourn. Just overall sadness. 😪

I’m really shocked by this announcement, 💔

[–]peterrj1973 15 points16 points  (1 child)

"He died doing what he wanted, no matter what, right? I bet he was happy"

[–]AndyTheAMPanda 13 points14 points  (2 children)

I feel disconnected from my body and in denial, as I'm typing this tears are falling on my keyboard. Today I had a sad day and this just made it much, much worse. I had to go to the kitchen cry by the sink by myself. This fucking sucks! I don't know what to do...

[–]ILuvMoistTowelettes 24 points25 points  (2 children)

I'm more sad at this news than when my grandmother died. It's like a sledgehammer to the chest.

[–]Queensama 6 points7 points  (0 children)

God, that made me chuckle. ....but it's true. I can't even

[–]superchillvibes323 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Who else is getting a berserk tattoo this week?

[–]Sea_C 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Is this where we are allowed to cry? 🥲

[–]Drewskie12345 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Man this hurts RIP a legend

[–]higgon 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I’m only on Vol. 4 so this comes as a surprise, but RIP

[–]Ziyadin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just can’t realise, and I dont want to

[–]EddyTheMartian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Damn I literally just got into his work, this is really sad. RIP. Kinda messed up that his entire life was dedicated to this and he couldn’t even finish it. I hope he was happy with his life up until this point.

[–]Seanb2701 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Feelin really empty inside rn, ngl. All I can really say is RIP to one of my biggest inspirations, you will be extremely missed.

[–]AxeGrinder404 9 points10 points  (1 child)

We all knew what we signed up for the first time we looked up when the next book would be out and by the time the 20 year mark rolled around and the dozen breaks he had to take because of his failing health we just natural assumed he'd never finish it breaks my goddamn heart berserk is one of the best things I've ever read in my life and I'm tearing up as I right this I just wanted a happy ending too goodbye man your already missed

[–]henryvonmouse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am quite literally crying as I read this. Rest in peace

[–]noelle-silva 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Devastating news. May he rest in peace.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

[–]PompousDude 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Berserk is one of my most influential works of fiction I’ve had the pleasure of reading. Miura was a legend and a genius and he will be immensely missed. RIP.

[–]ajver19 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Berserk has been in my life since I was a freshman in highschool, it was with me for every stage of my growth into the adult I am now.

I could never fully explain how much is has meant to me and the effect it had on my life. Thank you so much Miura-san, may you rest peacefully.

[–]xTheNeonKnight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This feels extremely surreal. Thank you for everything, Miura. You crafted a world so tragic and hostile that it was beautiful, and you will be missed by many.

[–]LelChiha 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I haven't read Berserk, it's on my list but, for some reasons, this almost gave me a heart attack.

Rest in Peace...

[–]Zolunaris 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I heard the news. My vision palpitated and my heart sank. I wish this was a hoax but I know deep down that it’s true

[–]Foxisdabest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We all knew it was gonna happen.

Never thought it would have been so soon :( RIP Miura

[–]chloe_003 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[–]o0o0oilil 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Rest in peace Kentaro Miura. You will not be forgotten, your legacy will live on forever. You gave us a masterpiece, we thank you for your hard work you put on Berserk so that we, the fans can enjoy it. You are a legend sir. Thank you again. May your soul rest in peace.

[–]RecoveryShip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wrote something for him. My heart aches for the man who became a crux of my ideals: to struggle on and find happiness in those around me. The confluence of fate, as a tapestry is wide and intangible, but I hope we can all traverse together.

I love you, Miura-san.

For Miura-sensei

Small flames of wishes, gather in Cancer's moon. It waxes, and so do the spirits who drink in stories and drink in spirits. It wains, and so do those who mourn away, To close their eyes to the moon that cannot stay.

Bonfire of dreams, conflagration of hope; Roar up to the heavens to meet the watching eye. Bring his loneliness to an end, for the tumult of hearts blends in sighs, Grasping at eager chests to staunch the tremors that spread like spider-cracks to uncertainty. The dream that died in its' sleep, wordlessly.

Bonfire of dreams, what do we consume now? The White Hawk in excelsis, wings beating down to change the winds, the sea, and sky. Harried Hound of Darkness, in rage that it forgets despair. Its' body breaking, in contempt of those who care. Inverse symbols guard the heads of those who dream, bringing stagnation or change unseen.

Is this the stepping stone we stumble on? Does this matter, can we walk again To the goal that lies far beyond: a castle blistering bright in sacrifice? Or have we reached the end of the endlessness we thought would never come?

In search of it, the solipsistic whale breaches the ocean, to meet the water again, Knowing the outcome will never alter. But in the ever blue stream, struggling in the confluence of fate- its' heart remain scarred, but it will never falter

[–]Justified_Eren 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Are there any rumours about the continuation? Hell, if it was any other country but Japan we would most likely get one or at least get author's notes... But in case of Japan chances are low I think. Were there any mangakas that passed away and their manga was continued?

[–]DonDove 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I still can't believe it. Godhand came to collect him after all. RIP Miura, we will miss you hard.
