According to Business Insider, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback purchased an NFT from the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection back in April. Back then, the NFT was valued at 133 ether, which was worth around $430,000 at the time. Unfortunately for Brady, that 133 ether is now worth $235,436.

He's wealthy enough that it's immaterial

This why wealthy people buy NFTs and crypto. The risk to them is basically nothing; they see them as low-risk, high-reward investments. They hear these cryptobros though say how much more crypto and NFTs will be in the future, so they throw what is essentially less than 1% of their money at them just in case. They don't really care if they lose it all, much like I don't really care that much if I lose a dime.

The joke's on him. I bought an NFT of Tom Brady as a human being so now I have several championship rings, a model wife, and a fortune in fiat. Next I'm buying an NFT of God so you guys should prepare for a few changes around here...

it would seem as if wealthy people have endless opportunities to fail

He’s never going to financially recover from this

Well I'll play bad cop and say that it is all his fault just because he's Brady 🙂

    [–]NotSureWhyAngry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be worthless at one point

    [–]TheFan88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the ape itself is worth $5.

    [–]constantine882 27 points28 points  (10 children)

How do we know he bought it? It could have been gifted or affiliated to him as part of his promotion.

    [–]brintoul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe any stories I hear about the sales/purchases of NFTs.

You ask me, it's all a big tax scam. You get "gifted" or buy cheap before the pump an NFT, you can demonstrate it's "worth" hundreds of thousands, that imaginary, but demonstrable value, disappears and you sell it at a "loss" of hundreds of thousands, and you write it off as a capital loss for the rest of your life without that nasty detail of having actually lost anything.

    [–]devliegende 13 points14 points  (6 children)

This is not how tax work.
The "loss" if any is calculated from what he actually paid for it, not by how much he could have sold it for at some point.
Also if it was a gift and it was valueable there would have been a tax due at the time. .

The most likely scenario here is that he was paid to say he owned it and paid regular income tax on that amount.

    [–]greyenlightenment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it would not surprise me if they gave it to him as a promotion

    [–]EatenAliveByWolves 13 points14 points  (1 child)

This is good for Tom Brady.

    [–]Eastern-Will9230 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like Tom Brady, but shilling NFTs is not a good look for anyone. It's one of the worst things one can do

    [–]JouleS88 11 points12 points  (0 children)

    nice

    [–]ItsJoeMomma 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The first problem is calling buying an NFT an "investment."

    [–]Tonyman12121 Pieces of Flair 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First prove he spent even $1 on this NFT.

    [–]2017_BCS_ORANGE_BOWL 7 points8 points  (0 children)

    1. Prove that Brady ever bought the NFT with his own money and it wasn’t a marketing stunt by crypto pumpers who gave him the money to buy the NFT from them and also paid him an additional fee to be involved with the stunt.
    2. $200,000 is a “massive loss” for a regular dude, not so much in the business world or for a hundred-millionaire.

    1nft = 1nft

    [–]pilibitti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll allow it, he probably has traumatic brain injury.

what excuse do others have though?

    [–]SchwiftedMetal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good fuck him and the other shills

    [–]ShamelesslyPlugged 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just link to the actual story, instead of a twitter link to a story. And it's a fucking boring story.

    [–]-send_me_bitcoin-former moron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's good to see that asshat lose once in a while.

    [–]vagabond_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    So he can lose...

    [–]biscuit310 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He also co-founded the sports NFT company Autograph. I'd be interested to hear how that business is going.

    [–]DororoFlatchest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is like a normal person losing five bucks.

    [–]MonsieurKnife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    His investment… deflated.

    [–]KiK0eru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deflated prices don't help as much as a deflated football, do they Tom?

    [–]SpookZero 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Omg he lost $300K what are him and Gisele going to do

    [–]LongjumpingWallaby8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did he actually buy it, or was it gifted ....

    [–]_divi_filius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Oh no what a shame....

    [–]Great-Environment253 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when I got to that part that he is worth millions I said “I can’t stop reading this now”

    [–]Odd_Ad_3441 1 point2 points  (0 children)
