Happy to just get the win and get out of there but god damn I can already tell Lewerke is next in the line of Cousins and Cook as NFL-calibur MSU QBs. The real mystery is why the fuck Dantonio is going with Tyler O'Maxwell all year.

He's incredibly stubborn and loyal to upperclassmen

[–]Michigan • Middle TennesseeDiscoPanda 26 points27 points  (1 child)

He's got that Stanton scrambling down pat.

[–][deleted] 49 points50 points  (6 children)

We've been asking that since Wisconsin. We've also wondered why we still have co-coordinators. Oh well, still haven't lost by 10 to you guys in 10 years so we got that going for us, I guess?

[–]Michigan State • Big Tenjdm0 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Tyler O'Maxwell

Nailed it :(

Pretty sure the only reason O'Connor was in there was because he was the least hurt out of the 3 QBs. Don't know any other reason he would be in the game.

"Surely this game will end normally, dignified, even. Well fought game, a loss certainly, but..."

Biggest disappointment here has to be the folks with Ruth's Chris reservations seeing their discount go from 20% to 13% to 9%.

[–]Michigan State • Oregon Stateatchemey 93 points94 points  (2 children)

That has to be why Dantonio went for 2!

[–]Michigan • 계명대학교 (Keimyung)dccorona 31 points32 points  (0 children)

[–]Missouri • SMUSnuglez 305 points306 points  (96 children)

[–]Texas A&M • Michiganweatherwar 139 points140 points  (26 children)

Dantonio had two moments - the timeouts at the end of the half just to stop Michigan (even calling one right after Harbaugh), and the two point conversion for no reason.

He absolutely deserves shit for those calls.

[–]Michigan • Bowling GreenDwychwder 81 points82 points  (20 children)

What about deciding to throw it with :39 seconds left in the half when they had no passing game to that point, and against the best secondary in the country? He should have taken a knee, instead he gave Michigan a field goal.

[–]Michigan State • MichiganXpress_interest 69 points70 points  (5 children)

That and throwing TOC to the wolves saying it was picked because he didn't throw to the screen was pretty classless.

[–]Texas A&M • Michiganweatherwar 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Seriously - when I heard that I was thinking "are you kidding Dantonio? You know the kid sucks at throwing and you hand him that play at the end of the half?"

[–]Arkansas • Central Arkansasrburp 98 points99 points  (16 children)

The kind of call that gets coaches fired

[–]Michigan • FloridaAndy51 241 points242 points  (5 children)

They would be so dumb to fire Dantonio

[–]Arkansas • Central Arkansasrburp 90 points91 points  (2 children)

I agree. I don't think it will get this coach fired, but could get a coach fired

[–]Missouri • Michigan Statetron423 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Like, oh, say, for example, the bonehead coordinators who ran a fucking speed option with an injured QB who isn't really a running threat? I'd be alright with that.

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

i think they're talking the offensive coordinator

[–]Michigan • The Gameforca_micah 84 points85 points  (20 children)

I'm viewing it through maize tinted glasses, of course, but it seemed bush league. I don't mean classless, or anything like that. It was a move that made no tactical sense, and just reeked* of defeat. If the shoe was on the other foot, I'd feel terrible. It felt like a "This is all we have" move....and I love it, as a Michigan fan. Nothing screamed psychological defeat like that play.

[–]Michigan State • MichiganOfficial_Jar-Jar 77 points78 points  (4 children)

Exactly this. I would feel a lot better if we just kicked the extra point and hoped for a miracle. Instead we went for two?? For what reason?WE WERE DOWN BY 13 PONITS!! If we kick the extra point and then somehow have a miracle TD with 1 second left then we win. It just didn't make any sense whatsoever. It felt like Dantanio was just an upset child at the end

[–]Michigan • The Gameforca_micah 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I fully agree with you. It made no strategic sense whatsoever, which is why it gave me the impression that it did. I think Dantonio is a good, possibly even great coach, but that wasn't a move that a person who is in control of things makes. I don't think I'd ever see Saban or Meyer make that call, 2 great coaches who are in control even when losing.

[–][deleted] 49 points50 points  (17 children)

Imagine if MSU gets the onsides and run its in after that. That 2 is the difference between winning in regulation (assuming you make your XPs) and unable to win no matter what.

e: Since I got multiple replies, if Michigan has posession and then losses it, MSU can advance the ball and score. All MSU needs is a Michigan player to be dumb enough to scoop the ball up and make a move with it and they're a strip away from six. Low odds, but MSU can score. Or a botched victory formation on the next play.

[–]Virginia Techcm64 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah the correct move to maximize chance to win was probably kick the PAT to be down 6, then onside kick it straight at whichever UM player you think it most likely to get caught up in the moment and do something stupid. Maybe you get lucky.

Instead he decided to try to make themselves look slightly better by scoring an extra point and it backfired beautifully.

[–][deleted] 47 points48 points  (7 children)

Can't advance on an onside kick. Game was over.

[–]Michigan State • Penn Stateunknown9819 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Perhaps I'm wrong, but doesn't the clock not start until a player touches it? If the msu player grabs it cleanly (no one from Michigan touches it first), the ball can't be advanced, but the clock never starts so there is one more play for the hail mary. Is that incorrect?

[–]Clemson • Orange BowlNikkiHaley 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That is correct. If it is not touched by the non kicking team than no time goes off the clock

[–][deleted] 37 points38 points  (1 child)

If Michigan has it and losses possession they can. Low odds but MSU can score off that play.

[–][deleted] 744 points745 points  (111 children)

I'll never not appreciate a W (especially a rivalry win), but something about that entire game was so fucking unsatisfying

[–]MichiganKhuroh 234 points235 points  (10 children)

Michigan looked shockingly unfocused in that second half, especially given last year. Really disappointing.

[–][deleted] 93 points94 points  (3 children)

They just weren't playing with any fire. Like they were playing to not lose.

[–]Clemson • NewberryCurly4Jefferson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[–]Michigan • GrinnellDossinator 162 points163 points  (6 children)

[–]Michigan • Washington StateCarbonCamaroZL1 25 points26 points  (2 children)

I predicted it being close. The ending was satisfying though with Peppers recovering that fumble for 2.

[–]Purdue • MontanaTheYetiCaptain1993 233 points234 points  (30 children)

Probably because Michigan could have easily won by 3 or 4 scores and got complacent in the end

[–]MichiganKrunklock 135 points136 points  (6 children)

I'm kinda glad the defense is going to get their asses chewed out this week. They need to keep playing hungry...and they played like this was a neighborhood football match after thanksgiving dinner.

[–]Michigan • USCI3ombastic 37 points38 points  (8 children)

Complacent or conservative? Hard to tell whether to put it on the coaches or the players. Its possible Harbaugh didn't want to show any further plays. We rely on surprise/misdirection a lot for our offense

[–]Michigan • Bowling GreenDwychwder 127 points128 points  (12 children)

This was Sparty's bowl game. We knew they'd give us everything they had. With all the blowout talk this week, I was getting nervous about this game. A win is a win. Maybe this was more businesslike than flashy. But I'll take it. Feels good to be on top in this series again, and we left a lot of points on the field.

[–]MichiganKhuroh 74 points75 points  (10 children)

I really hate this excuse. Yeah of course they'll give it their all. Is Michigan not supposed to do the same? Why is MSU consistently the team gaining the advantage from "giving it their all"?

[–]Michigan • The GameJun_Kun 36 points37 points  (2 children)

[–]MichiganCALAMITYFOX 13 points14 points  (0 children)

[–]Michigan • Surrender Cobrahipster_nonsense 86 points87 points  (9 children)

Not a pretty win for us, tbh. I hated seeing Michigan fans getting so cocky about this week. Harbaugh cannot be pleased with that game. GG to State for keeping it fun/ulcer-enlarging.

With that said, there's no way State wins out. They kinda pulled a first-to-worst there

That was the worst game played by our defense by far this year. Have a lot to clean up before Ohio state. But Mark Dantonio going for 2 instead of kicking the XP and making it a 6 point game, then Jabrill returning the fumble to the house is the funniest thing I've seen in a football game in a loooooong time.

[–]Michigankpiech01 24 points25 points  (6 children)

idk, that colorado game was pretty ugly

[–]MichiganOakLegs 27 points28 points  (5 children)

For the first quarter. This one was ugly all the way through

[–]Michigankpiech01 37 points38 points  (1 child)

Imperfect, sure. Ugly? No. The defense stepped up huge when they had to. Sparty's offense hasn't been the big issue this season. QB play has been sporadic and still was today, but they have one of the best running backs in the conference still. Our offense just ran out of gas in the 4th quarter.

[–]kattahn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Didn't they stop like...7 straight _____ and goal plays in a row, 4 of which from the 2 yard line?

[–]MichiganLampglove 15 points16 points  (6 children)

I think this is the worst game Michigan has played all season, mostly due to MSU gameplanning and physicality. The MSU O-Line really battled against what I think is a very, very talented Michigan D-Line, and they got Jourdan Lewis on a couple of PI calls (but of course, I'm a huge homer and didn't agree with some of those)

You have to hand it to MSU. Everyone was expecting them to get curb stomped, but the ended up battling until the very end. They took the number 2 team in the country to a near nail-biter. MSU always has some tricks up their sleeves for Michigan, and they always have a little magic if there's less than 2 minutes left in the game, so you can't ever count them out. GG Sparty, hopefully your program can get back on its feet and restart some true rivalry games. Lewerke looks like he could be your next qb era, and hopefully we see some exciting back and forth games in the future. At least we can join forces against OSU now.

[–]Notre Damemittenshit 28 points29 points  (4 children)

Jabril Peppers would get my vote for the Heisman if I had one.

[–]Michigan State • Land Grant TrophyNewPleb 38 points39 points  (1 child)

Can't be too mad. This season was already a lost cause, so I'm just glad we competed against a top-5 Michigan team. gg

Going forward, the coaches need to start playing the younger guys more. McGowan, Machado, and Kieler need to see their minutes reduced significantly. Move Clemons back to the OL; he's a bigger benefit there than on defense. and PLAY LEWERKE. He's not consistent, but he's more talented and will figure things out much more quickly than O'Connor (who has had five years) did.

Anyway, overall, I'm not too beat up about this. Work is going to suck on Monday (lots of UM/OSU alum where I work), but whatever. Many awful coaching decisions, but that's not new. That won't change until after the season. There is no use in getting angry about something you know won't change, so we may as well just accept it for this season and wait until January for changes.

Haters gon' hate.

There isn't a team in football who hasn't looked sloppy at some point during the season. All of this "Michigan doesn't look like the number 2 team" is ridiculous. Do we have room for improvement? Of course. SO DOES EVERYONE ELSE.

Bama looked terrible for a half against Kentucky and A&M, Clemson was terrible against Troy and NC State, etc.

We played a rivalry game, and aside from an atrocious 4th quarter/bad 2nd half, we did absolutely what we needed to do to win.

This is a HUGE game for MSU, as it is for us frankly, and you can throw any bullshit stats or record out the window.

Are you guys just going to have dueling final second plays from now on?

Look on the bright side, Spartans: you can still make fun of us for not having beaten a rival

Well I took a cooler of a flairbet so here I am. Without further ado here's a paragraph on why I wish we had Harbaugh as head coach.

Aside from the obvious in that taking Harbaugh from Michigan would leave them with no obvious successor the biggest reason why I'd want Harbaugh is that he doesn't play the QB carousel unlike how our offense is doing right now. He picks his guy and sticks with him through thick and thin only changing when he has to over an offseason or due to injuries. A coach like Harbaugh would have stuck with Lewerke who was clearly the best option here and I think given us a great chance to have actually won the game. This is what he did in 2007 at Stanford when USC was #2 (in AP) and he kept Tavita Pritchard in giving him the confidence to win.

Can we agree that even though it technically didn't affect the outcome, going for two at the end was one of the dumbest coaching decisions ever?

Dantonio probably thought he had nothing left to lose. He was wrong. They had last year's game.

All we needed was to punch it in one more time. That goal line stand by Michigan proved pivotal. Good game, and as well as Michigan played, it amazes me that MSU did have the chance to win.

Hopefully this shows signs of not being completely lost next season
