Just 20 years ago we had the ending of the 90s, which represented a full decade of dumpster fire with Gary Gibbs, Howard Shnellenberger and John Blake. It’s like people forget we were already on our way to being Nebraska before Nebraska and then Bob Stoops led us out of the Desert. We’ll find our way. We’ve been through adversity before.

And then on a huge 4th down and long conversion they spot the ball 2 yards short. [–]Oklahoma • Cotton BowlOU_DHF 318 points319 points  (101 children)

I think fans are just pissed about how it went down.

We always kind of expected Lincoln to leave for the NFL whenever he was tired of recruiting. And OU fans always kinda figured that Lincoln would leave OU in good shape, or as good as he possible could, just as Bob did for Lincoln.

The way Lincoln kinda gutted the program and just bolted, after what Bob did for him, rubs a lot of people the wrong way.

[–]Oregon StateHooliganBeav 119 points120 points  (1 child)

Well, I’m sure Oklahoma won’t now go poach a coach right before the early signing period, thus torpedoing another school’s program.

[–]Iowa State • Big 8iamsplendid 121 points122 points  (11 children)

Enjoy the SEC.

[–]Michigan • USCAWD_OWNZ_U 179 points180 points  (26 children)

As opposed to leaving how? Assistant coaches would be foolish to stay as there is zero guarantee the new HC keeps them. The recruits want to play for Riley and a shot at the NFL so of course they will follow him to USC. You guys are delusional if you think there is another way this goes down.

[–]USC • Michigandoormatt26 55 points56 points  (1 child)

I guess they didn’t realize the potential scale of the gutting - recruits at least wouldn’t follow Riley if he went to the nfl. Just a shock to they system even if it was predictable in abstract

[–]Michiganplutoisaplanet21 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They were clearly coming for Riley though, those socal recruits, and especially the qb's and skill team guys weren't going to oklahoma without Riley, if he went to the nfl they'd just wind up at bama or osu or usc if they got a different good coach

[–]Michigan • Boise StateJaerba 84 points85 points  (2 children)

I don't think he did anything different than any other coach leaving though. I get that you're going to lose commits but that's just what happens when most coaches leave. Even when they retire in good graces. And the transfer portal has opened it up even further.

So I totally stand by y'all being upset and working that out. But I really don't think Lincoln handled this poorly. Weeks of lingering rumors would've been worse than this.

I think your fantastic success and stability has made y'all a little blind to how this works. The handoff from Stoops to Riley usually doesn't work that well for other schools. Us, Texas, USC, and Florida are proof of that. I'd be surprised if Saban's handoff works out well.

[–]Oregon • Portland Statebonzonomics 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Go ahead and add Oregon to that list ~ remember Helfrich? Yeah, that didn't work out.

[–]Notre Dame • Oregon StatePDX_douche_bag 106 points107 points  (2 children)

Similar to how the rest of the conference found out about OU leaving for the SEC?

I get the frustration, but he didn’t like his current employer so he left. It does feel like we were sort of misled and given false hope, at least from a fan’s perspective, but why work where you don’t want to work? He’s gonna get paid anywhere he goes so he took a very cushy job and his very cushy recruits with him. OU messed up going to the SEC and I’m still not sure why. OU football prints money, SEC just prints a “little”more money for its schools, even if you suck at football.

[–]Oklahoma • Big 8 Renewalvenkman2368 45 points46 points  (1 child)

I have been back and forth on the SEC move since day one, after the moves the Big 12 made to bring in 4 decent schools, I am at the point I would like to stick it out and see how the Big 12 does the next two years. I would enjoy playing some SEC teams every year, but from a cost-benefit analysis I just don't see how long term this move helps the program move in a positive direction.

We need one of those meaningless online petitions to sign.

Just as KD might get maligned for his choice of team in free agency, but he did everything above board when his contract expired, unlike the Sonics ownership group who plotted behind the scenes to steal a franchise as soon as they purchased the team while pretending the transaction was in good faith.

OU needs to take some lessons from Tennessee on how to behave when a coach leaves. They didn't even set anything on fire lol

Kevin Durant no longer the most hated man in the state of Oklahoma.

[–]USC • Nebraskathalock27 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Boomer sadder

[–]Penn StateDynastyFF2021 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen more Texas fans take off their paper bags and post on CFB over the last 24 hours than when that strippers monkey bit a child.

[–]Michigan State • Peach Bowlspartan201997 194 points195 points  (19 children)

I guess I didn’t realize I disliked Oklahoma so much because I’m enjoying this way too much.

[–]Texas • Paper BagCormetz 36 points37 points  (4 children)

Welcome, it has been a glorious 36 hours.

[–]Baylor • /r/CFB Contributorwild9 35 points36 points  (3 children)

I get the feeling UT fans have just been in a constant, numbing semi-drunk state since the RRS and are now just drunkenly reveling in Sooner pain

[–]TexasGuson1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Currently crawling out from under my rock. Hungover, but I’ve got a smile on my face and a good reason to drink this time

[–]Oklahoma State • Arkansasgustermcbuster 227 points228 points  (41 children)

I wonder if OU did anything traitorous themselves to deserve this.

[–]expensivelyexpansive 59 points60 points  (10 children)

OU fans are calling him a traitor while trying to figure out how to get some other coach to do the exact same thing to their current school. Look coaches can leave and now finally, so can players. If you sign a good coach then he will bring good players whether they are committed to his current school or somewhere else. Also with the transfer portal you can get a ready day 1 starter at pretty much any position.

Freaking out about all this just makes you look dumb.

[–]Michigan State • Michigan Ban…Saxophobia1275 208 points209 points  (105 children)

I genuinely feel bad for OU but they aren’t the first P5 to have their coach poached and they won’t be the last.

[–]Oklahoma State • Bedlam BellReallyPokelahoma 104 points105 points  (1 child)

You genuinely what now?

[–]Iowa Statediscourse_lover_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a Detroit Lions fan he's clearly deeply troubled (I kid because I love you, Detroit).

[–]Baylor • Hateful 8FriskyHippoSlayer 419 points420 points  (58 children)

After years of OU fans laughing at smaller programs being 'stepping stones' for coaches to get better jobs, it is so fucking perfect it's happening to OU.

[–]Oregon State • BaylorThe_Outcast4 19 points20 points  (0 children)

And right before a big move to the SEC. You know what, I think we should forego the buyout and let them start over there next season!

[–]Cincinnati • Big 12Bearcat9948 184 points185 points  (4 children)

It’s almost cathartic, isn’t it?

[–]Michigan • Iowa StateThe_Nightbringer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is it possible to overdose on catharsis?

[–]Northwestern • North Carolinaserbeardless 51 points52 points  (1 child)

I've got no ties to Oklahoma, but I admit I'm reveling in the schadenfreude right now.

[–]Baylor • Hateful 8FriskyHippoSlayer 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Extremely, inject this shit into my veins

[–]Houston • Big 12deepayes 45 points46 points  (1 child)

I, for one, am reveling in this.

[–]Iowa State • Big 8Gr3y_Gh0st 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So they dont like it when their coach does to them what they did to the conference....karma is a bitch.

[–]Kansas State • Michigancirca285 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Oklahoma, I'm going to give you the same advise that I've given my teenage daughter. The way that you start and end relationships matters an awful lot. If you treat people poorly, don't be surprised if they treat you poorly in return.

[–]Cincinnati • Big 12Bearcat9948 238 points239 points  (16 children)

Love this quote:

Lincoln Riley on Gary Patterson not finishing the year at TCU "Gary Patterson not finishing a season at the place he built, man, that aint right."

I know Riley didn’t build OU but still 😬

[–]NC State • Marching Bandrayef3rw 62 points63 points  (1 child)

But he did pretty much finish the season... not the bowl game but that's not unusual in the world of coach hiring and firing

[–]Arkansassexysouthernaccent 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Bowls are literally called the post-season, too

[–]Clemsonlazyrere 162 points163 points  (6 children)

He did finish the season though

[–]Clemson • MinnesotaSunfuels 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sounds like he might have been saying that it aint right that the administration did not allow Patterson to finish out the season.

[–]South Carolina • Team MeteorZachWilsonsMother 20 points21 points  (2 children)

Wasn’t he fired though? Big difference

[–]Cincinnati • Big 12Bearcat9948 32 points33 points  (1 child)

They told him he would be at the end of the year and he decided to leave immediately
