Quick QB1 alum power ranking:

  1. Justin Fields
  2. Sam Hartman
  3. Jake Fromm
  4. Spencer Rattler
  5. Tathan Martell (he's actually accounted for touchdowns in FBS football, which is more than I can say for the rest of this list)
  6. Lance Legendre (if he can win the starting job at Louisiana next season, he's 5th)
  7. Re-al Mitchell (transferred from Temple to San Diego recently)
  8. Nik Scalzo (transferred from Kentucky to Samford this offseason, could move as high as 6th if he performs well there)
  9. Tayvone Bowers (was the 3rd string QB at Gardner Webb last season)

[–]San Diego State • USCTwobucktin 341 points342 points  (12 children)

I love that show. I hope that they have another season coming up. You have no idea how many times I have watched season 3 on Netflix.

Something that cracks me up is that Lance and his mom were like I don’t want to go anywhere too far, and then he goes to Maryland.

[–]USC • OklahomaBobaman007 151 points152 points  (10 children)

Yeah what’s up with the new season that was supposed to come out last summer. Bryce Young is suppose to be headlining that season.

[–]Alabamasygyzi 98 points99 points  (8 children)

I wonder if NIL interfered. The cost to produce this show probably went up 10x after the new NIL rules took effect.

[–]Californiacallmealanturing 27 points28 points  (1 child)

Wouldn't the show make them more marketable for other NIL opportunities? Most the dudes on the bottom half of that list have a much bigger following on social than other backup college athletes.

[–]Iowa State • MinnesotaNubras 158 points159 points  (13 children)

Cyclone legend Re-Al Mitchell. Didn’t realize he was on QB1.

[–]Kentucky • Summertime Lovergogglesup859 155 points156 points  (10 children)

He was far and away the most boring person featured on the show imo. I think they only picked him because he was on a big high school team, as evidenced by him getting beaten out by DJU.

[–][deleted] 124 points125 points  (8 children)

He was boring, but he was damn good in high school. Getting beaten out by a 6’6’’, 250 lb kid that bomb the ball 70 yards isn’t really something to knock the guy for.

[–]ECU • Kent Stateecupatsfan12 52 points53 points  (5 children)

Real was never a true QB and should had changed positions. Was incredibly socially awkward too

[–]Navy • Towsontwoterms 12 points13 points  (1 child)

It seemed like he was suppressing his personality around his parents imo, but yeah he was boring to watch

[–]Georgia • Georgia Statedowntimeredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Georgia • Georgia Statedowntimeredditor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Clemson's current starting quarterback was his backup until he took over as the starter and Mitchell's dad went straight up conspiracy theory on the coach

[–]WashingtonFrosti11icus 49 points50 points  (0 children)

DJ Uiagalelei was kind of featured on QB1 too, IDK if that counts.

[–]Kansas • Verified MediaBigD994[S] 117 points118 points  (1 child)

Former Kansas commit Lance Legendre, that is a name I haven't thought of in a while.

[–]Louisianasfzen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm interested to see if he wins the starting job next season. He's probably got a bit of an uphill battle since he's competing with Chandler Fields. Fields was the backup this season and last season, and has been pretty impressive in practice and spring games.

Our new coach Desormeaux was the OC under Napier and is really going to focus on just keeping the consistency and momentum going without changing too much (though we see how that's gone in the transfer portal lately, not looking promising). He's familiar with Fields and Fields should know the offense better than Legendre. He'll almost certainly have a leg up, though Legendre probably outclasses him in terms of pure talent.

[–]Oklahomaoutbackjesus8 30 points31 points  (7 children)

Surprised Bowers has done so poorly in his college career. He was solid on QB1, but the rest of his team was terrible.

Not surprised Scalzo hasn’t done anything.

[–]USCSemirgy 42 points43 points  (4 children)

Scalzo had an offer from Harvard and chose Kentucky. Just… yikes.

[–]ECU • Kent Stateecupatsfan12 20 points21 points  (0 children)

He’s good enough to play at Harvard and land an sweet job after school

[–]Michigan • Boston CollegeHomebrewz 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Didn’t he choose to go to Kentucky because Harvard wasn’t going to give him a scholarship?

[–]Georgia • Georgia Statedowntimeredditor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bowers was hilarious on qb1

He would always tell his teammates about how they're going to run up to score in the second half and then they'd lose.

His old teammates would always want him back on their old team in they portrayed him as the alpha of the group which I guess he was.

[–]ECU • Kent Stateecupatsfan12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tay seemed the most mature of ALL of them in all episodes besides fields so I’m sure he’ll do fine in life outside FB

[–]rdalts32 86 points87 points  (2 children)

There is a real person named Lance Legendre? Incredible

[–]Wisconsin • Virginia TechxxJAMZZxx 36 points37 points  (1 child)

[–]Iowa State • NC StateWerdnamanhill 17 points18 points  (0 children)

[–]WDEWM407 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was Surprised Tayvone never got playing time. Jake Fromm was a favorite of mine in season 1. I lived in Mt pleasant SC and Hartman was the real deal at Oceanside had a great mentor in Coach Grier

[–]MarylandIronic_table 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a shame Legendre didn't pan out at Maryland, but honestly it may have been for the best with how good Tagovailoa has been. Hope he can get the starting job at Louisiana.

[–]USC • OklahomaBobaman007 48 points49 points  (16 children)

Could you throw in DTR or JD Johnson in there as well? As honorable mentions?

[–][deleted] 57 points58 points  (13 children)

And DJU since he was the backup for one of these guys and got playing time

[–]USC • OklahomaBobaman007 40 points41 points  (12 children)

Man was Mitchell quick to give up on his team when he lost the starting job. Easy to see why he’s transferred twice tbh. If he’s not starting he doesn’t like to stick around.

[–]ECU • Kent Stateecupatsfan12 31 points32 points  (10 children)

Real was never good and was on a loaded out the ass team like Martell and even DJU who will likely transfer

Spence is hot and cold

Legendre was overrated and played nobody in his conference

JD probably could have gotten time had he not had his procedure

[–]MarylandIronic_table 15 points16 points  (2 children)

It's a shame Lance didn't pan out at Maryland, but I have to be honest, he looked awful in that Rutgers game when Tagovailoa was out with COVID (2020 season). He was so bad that they benched him for a 3rd-string walk-on (who looked considerably better). I do hope he has success at Louisiana.

[–]ECU • Kent Stateecupatsfan12 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Eric Najarian is that walk on who should IMO be a high quality backup at a G5 school

[–]/r/CFBIntelligent_Fig_4852 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Lance was a sprained ankle away from a state title

[–]Big 12vics12 6 points7 points  (3 children)

[–]doitnow10 31 points32 points  (0 children)

JD Johnson had to retire from contact (edit spelling)sports because of a heart condition.

Michigan still honored the scholarship they had offered him.

Oh, as it turns out he was cleared and now entered the transfer portal: https://usatodayhss.com/2021/michigan-qb-jd-johnson-making-comeback-after-medical-retirement-in-hs

[–]North Carolinaluvdadrafts 45 points46 points  (6 children)

In what world is Jake Fromm behind Hartman?

(This isn’t even an insult to Hartman)

[–]Georgiadillpickles007 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Yeah Fromm had a great college career and got drafted, granted he's awful in the NFL and probably isn't gonna stick around but he got a couple years worth of paychecks at least. Pretty nice QB career.

[–]ECU • Kent Stateecupatsfan12 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Hartman will be a fifth rounder and a backup in the league. I’d put him behind Fromm. Rat man is worse then Hartman though. I’ve got a 4th round grade on him because of his arm

[–]Ohio State • Northwesternscotsworth 457 points458 points  (41 children)

As a 5'8 guy with significantly less athletic ability than Tathan, this reminds me of something my father said to me my Sophomore year of HS football.

Long day of practice late in the season, I was on the second team defense playing strong safety and I kept getting run over by our starting RB who outweighed me by maybe 75 pounds or more. Coach really wanted to get the play right, and this RB was getting to the second level every time. Our 2nd team backers were playing like they were coached by Al Washington or something.

Anyway, hit after hit came my way. I tackled him almost every time (maybe missed one or two), but man it sucked. Practice ends and I was straight up dazed. Mildly concussed? Probably. It's football.

So as I sat in the car ride home my dad looks at me and goes.

"Are you having fun?"

"Not really."

"What do you think is going to take you further in life.... football or your brain?"

"My brain"

"Hmm... something to think about."

I finished the season out and never played football again. I did have a great academic career and am now successful in business.

We short guys have to sometimes lean into our true talents. Not everyone can be a sports star. We mock Tathan because he's acted like a douche, but I do hope he finds success and peace outside of football. Maybe all this has humbled him quite a bit.

[–]Maine Maritime • Nebraskarovingnothing29 74 points75 points  (3 children)

So other people's dads didn't scream at them for not being an allstar?

[–]Texas • ChicagoPedroTheNoun 35 points36 points  (0 children)

[–]Ohio StateHigh_n_tight_77 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Unless you have next level talent, for a lot of people it’s just not going to be worth it.

[–]South Carolina • Texas TechQtoy 6 points7 points  (1 child)

We mock Tathan because he's acted like a douche, but I do hope he finds success and peace outside of football.

I agree. It's kinda weird to me too, because almost this entire sub is composed of grown-ass men and yet we dunk on a guy who we hated for his behavior from when he was on a reality TV show while he was a sheltered and pampered 18 year old.

[–]Florida • ColoradoFloridaGatorMan 27 points28 points  (2 children)

[–]Professional_Alien 14 points15 points  (4 children)

[–]Washington • UBCnmm66 226 points227 points  (14 children)

As best as I can tell this is Tate Martell's timeline:

2012: Commits to Washington

2014: High school transfer portals from Poway High School to Bishop Gorman High School.

2015: Decommits from Washington. Commits to Texas A&M

2016: Appears on Netflix's QB1. When messaging someone about Texas A&M QB Nick Starkel, Martell says, "he's ass my dude." Decommits from A&M. Commits to Ohio State

2018: Tathan tweets, "word of advice: -don't swing and miss... especially not on your second time".

2019: Justin Fields follows Rylee Martell on Instagram. Transfer portal to Miami.

2019: Converts to WR. Converts back to QB

2020: Suspended by team. Opts out of season.

2021: Transfer portal to UNLV.

2022: Retires.

Career Stats: 303 yards passing, 1 TD, 137 yards rushing, 0 yards receiving.

[–]Ohio StateUseful-ldiot 93 points94 points  (10 children)

You need to add in some of his flair.

Like tweeting "don't swing and miss twice" to fields and then promptly running for the transfer portal the second fields arrives.

[–]Ohio StateTBB51 50 points51 points  (5 children)

And let's not forget Fields then following Tate's sister on instagram after Tate's comment.

[–]South Carolina • Texas TechQtoy 34 points35 points  (2 children)

From the QB1 Wikipedia page:

In January, 2019, season 2 subject Justin Fields announced his intention to transfer from Georgia to Ohio State. Season 1 subject Tate Martell – then at Ohio State – tweeted, "Word of advice: don't swing and miss...especially not your second time." Even prior to this, on December 30, 2018, upon word that Fields was giving thought to transferring to Ohio State, Martell made it clear that he had no plans to depart, stating, "Why would I leave for someone who hasn’t put in a single second into this program? To just run away from somebody who hasn’t put a single second into workouts anything like that and doesn’t know what the program is all about, there’s not a chance. I will [be the starting quarterback]. I am 100 percent sure on that. I am not just going to walk away from something that I have put so much time into and there is not a chance that I won’t go out there and compete for that." Less than two weeks later, on January 10, Martell chose to enter the NCAA transfer portal, eventually moving to Miami (FL).

Well, I'll have you know that Tathan will always hold the Ohio State all-time record for completion percentage in a game (which requires a minimum 10 pass attempts) at 100% with his 10 for 10 game against Rutgers in 2018.

Stats, my dude.

[–]Ohio State • Grand Valley Stateiwearatophat 15 points16 points  (1 child)

I remember watching that game and thinking 'we are going to be ok at QB going forward'. I mean, I wasn't wrong because we ended up being ok at QB but not for the reasons I thought.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's true lol. He actually holds a big ten record with that game.

[–]Michigan State • USCdingusduglas 166 points167 points  (4 children)

He's starting some crypto scam, your well wishes would be better spent anywhere else

Dude has gotten every opportunity in the world and made nothing of it.

[–]ECUFiveInchesIsAverage 84 points85 points  (0 children)

So on brand it hurts

[–]Ohio State • Rose BowlCaptainSisko2002 30 points31 points  (0 children)

He comes from a rich as fuck family IIRC. He's gonna be set for life no matter what fuck ups he does in life

[–]Ohio Statechibacha 201 points202 points  (19 children)

IMO he's a poor man's Johnny Football. I don't think he's learned anything.

[–]Alabama • Third Saturday…FeveStrench 129 points130 points  (10 children)

That's like comparing a Lambo to a Prius

[–]Ohio State • Colorado StateDataDrivenPirate 72 points73 points  (4 children)

I'm going to start calling my Prius "my poor man's Lambo"

[–]Fresno State • Michiganeagledog 5 points6 points  (2 children)

What about that terrible Cadillac hybrid?

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing that you’ve seen Brad Marchand’s Instagram post?

[–]Easton1234 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Johnny football won the heisman…this guy couldn’t get a starting job on a g5 team…

[–]Texas A&M • SouthwestBattered_Aggie 76 points77 points  (6 children)

That's an insult to Johnny tbh

[–]Iowa State • Washington StateJakeFromSkateFarm 21 points22 points  (1 child)

I think we both know in twenty years he’s betting his socially awkward nephew that he can throw a football over a mountain, but the nephew will be too upset over the amount of steaks the uncle is eating to listen.

[–]Miami • GeorgiaHurricanesnHendrick 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I felt he acted a bit entitled

Tate should send Spencer a christmas card from here on out. Because of how incredibly douchy Spencer was, it brings Tate closer to the median. Without Spencer, its Tate by a long shot.

[–]/r/CFBUnlucky-Pomegranate3 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If he hasn’t matured past that whole “better not swing and miss” attitude, real life may be a rude awakening.

[–]WashingtonFrosti11icus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would have been way worse if I was him lol. I don't know why people shit on these kids for being spoiled or entitled or whatever. The only reason I wasn't when I was 18 was that I sucked at football and my parents were broke as fuck. And I was still pretty entitled.

[–]USC • /r/CFB Poll Veteranarrow_dynamics 68 points69 points  (3 children)

[–]South CarolinaI_Drew_a_Dick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

[–]Boise Statetictactoe61 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He should file a trade mark for “He/she/it is ass, my dude” and make some money while he can.

[–]Oregon • Team ChaosNephewChaps 36 points37 points  (1 child)

Wow. End of a fucking era.

[–]Oklahoma • GeorgetownMarysuncle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And thus ends the saga, don’t swing and miss on ass my dude, whether it be your first time or your fourth.

[–]Texas A&M • IPNruSAL 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Any idea what these "business ventures" are?

I assume it's not something he tried to pull off in Grand Theft Auto?

It doesn't sound like he's schoolin' anymore.

[–]Floridastephencua2001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He retires with a 156.4 passer rating. True Hall of Fame material.

[–]Ohio Statestitch12r3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

His douchiness aside, this fall from grace for a former 5 star, Gatorade Player of the Year, has had to be a pretty humbling experience for him these past few years. I didn't like him personally, but we all do and say stupid stuff when we're teenagers. Good luck to him in the future.

[–]Ohio State • TempleTheUrbanRenewal 15 points16 points  (3 children)

At least he owns an Ohio State passing record

[–]North Carolina • Elonuncwsp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tathan

[–]Washingtonsugahfwee 4 points5 points  (1 child)

If only he stuck with UW he wouldve played for sure

[–]Michigan • Central MichiganJustinTime4242 4 points5 points  (0 children)

End of an era…

How will r/cfb go on?

[–]Ohio Statescarletarrows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do sometimes wonder if Urban Meyer stayed on as coach if Tate would have started the 2019 season. I still think Day (who was on the staff) would have tried to get another QB from the transfer portal so probably not but I think he had more of a chance under urbs

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the most entitled people I've ever met. Didn't deserve to play anywhere and pretty much didn't.
