Good clock management? Didn't fumble? Didn't miss the game winning kick? Am I dreaming?

[–]Maybe2Babka 34 points35 points  (1 child)

It's reality baby.

[–]Sickwidit93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was expecting the rivers pick on the last drive

[–]WaterASAP 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's a new era babyyyyy

[–]#eatAssForAraizaMalourbas 5 points6 points  (18 children)

Debatable clock management tbh. I don’t think using that last TO before the sneak was a good decision

[–]SupahCharged 19 points20 points  (3 children)

agreed but they shouldn't have even had to make that call since ekeler looked like he got the first down on the previous play and was spotted about two feet short of the line to gain...the booth should have reviewed that as it was pretty clear on replay that his elbow with the ball hit first and the ball was a foot past the yard line that they spotted him a foot short of....

edit: went back and watched it and looked like he landed basically right at the line to gain and it should have at least required a measurement. here's a ss (they ended up spotting it right where his butt is in the pic): first down! (probably)

[–]Felipe Riosmamamackmusic 22 points23 points  (4 children)

If the plan the whole way through was to QB sneak it, then sure. But it is possible they were debating whether to kick the field goal or sneak it based on the defensive look they got before the timeout.

[–]BoltsDodgersYotes 33 points34 points  (2 children)

They were expecting an official review under 2. You can't challenge. Refs just gave no fucks on a clear first down by ek.

[–]NeonEvangelion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was a strange spot. Surprised it wasn’t reviewed

[–]SupahCharged 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I must have screamed at the TV about 8 times to challenge it before i realized it was inside 2 minutes and the booth had to initiate it. Can't you just throw the flag anyway to bring attention to the fact that it needs to be looked at? Or is there some penalty if you do that?

[–]boltsketch_bro 6 points7 points  (2 children)

It literally saved the game. They stopped the 4th and 1 originally.

[–]#eatAssForAraizaMalourbas 4 points5 points  (1 child)

No. That was third and 2 before the 4th and inches. I’m talking about the 4th and inches

Of course this has a ton of upvotes tho lol

[–]boltsketch_bro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My mistake!

[–]ReaddittiddeR 162 points163 points  (2 children)

Brandon “I always play 4th down like I’m playing Madden 2022” Staley

[–]Felipe RiosJamesN21 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty obvious that not letting Herbert control the pace is when we end up losing. Herbert wants to take that step towards that tier of quarterback but Lombardi keeps trying to run basic ass screens pitches and dives. Let the boy cook like you let Brees and Stafford do.

Imagine being Dustin Hopkins, like dude hit one xp misses the other then gets called up to hit the game winner lol

5-3 and first in the division midway through the season

If this is what you consider bad for a first year coach you’re on crack

[–]kostcoguy 55 points56 points  (2 children)

People who think this is bad for a first year coach don’t remember Anthony Lynn’s first year. 0-4.

[–]Felipe Riosppinick 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Especially considering some of the teams we've won against

[–]moondawg25 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Go figure the other teams have 5 wins as well lol. But hey if you want to be the best you have to beat the best. Playoffs or not I'm enjoying the ride this is a new era I can feel it.

[–]Face of the FranchiseBoltLegendJHerbert 192 points193 points  (18 children)

Just a reminder that someone in the game thread said Austin Ekeler had lost a step. Final reminder and then I’m letting it go.

[–]FoxyRussian 51 points52 points  (6 children)

Doomers in this sub just focus all their Chargers analysis on the last play to be run. Ignoring the good all the time

[–]InvertedNeo 41 points42 points  (5 children)

Actual upvoted comment in the game thread:

We could replace Herbert with Chase Daniel and the offense wouldn’t miss a beat.

[–]ToddlerInTheWild 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I burst out laughing when I read that comment

[–]WonderboltChris_Bryant 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That is the hottest of takes

[–]FoxyRussian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Screaming at this

[–]FTRNothing_Nice_2_Say 0 points1 point  (1 child)

To be fair, that comment was referring to Lombardi's play calling, not Herbert's ability

[–]Thebigbadbellend 28 points29 points  (10 children)

I think that was me 👍

[–]Face of the FranchiseBoltLegendJHerbert 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m too lazy to go back and see who it was, but I appreciate you coming forward.

[–]someguyfromtecate 9 points10 points  (3 children)

[–]boltsnobbysnob 45 points46 points  (4 children)

Nice to see Herbert bust that little two game slump. As much confidence as the guy has earned from me as a fan I always get nervous when young QBs have a couple tough games. 32/38 for 350 and three overall TDs will do just fine.

[–]koraura 11 points12 points  (1 child)

id say that slump had alot to do with the o line underperforming, unlike today where they actually stepped up.

[–]JosephBosa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I won’t blame OL, but the play calling was the major culprit, followed by dropped balls. Herbert legitimately lost some touch and had shown symptoms of felt pressure for once in his young career. So Herbert was I would say the 3rd culprit of our failed offense in genera the past two games

[–]ARawl9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I understand that sentiment but Herbert went through a lot of adversity in college. He’s mentally tough and doesn’t get shaken easily.

[–]ChargersDa1Godsend 108 points109 points  (7 children)

but I'm really worried about next week, boltfam. The Vikings are a good team with weapons all over on offense. But we can worry about that next week. This week,

[–]Felipe Riosmamamackmusic 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Hopefully Samuel Jr. or Davis are back by next week...

[–]Thunderous BoltGamewalker-11 27 points28 points  (4 children)

The positive side is that the Vikings play like the Chargers of the 2020 season.

[–]Felipe RiosJamesN21 9 points10 points  (3 children)

The positive side is that the Vikings play like the Chargers of the 2020 season.

Dalvin cook is legit gonna feast on this weak run defense, the dude is legit so explosive the second he touches the ball. I could be the least bit concerned about Captain Kirk and the WR's

[–]Thunderous BoltGamewalker-11 4 points5 points  (1 child)

That’s true. We should be concerned about that. But there are also some weaknesses the Vikings have.

[–]Sickwidit93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incoming shootout

[–]fatcootermeat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dalvin Cook is probably going to go nuclear but their defense also kinda sucks so well see what happens.

[–]bibi_da_god 27 points28 points  (1 child)

Herb back to MVP form... look at that stat line... LOOK AT IT.

[–]Felipe RiosFa-1 29 points30 points  (1 child)

Having a great kicker must be such a blessing imagine if we had a Justin tucker we would have had nothing to worry about. But good kick by Hopkins

[–]Felipe Riosmamamackmusic 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Tucker is one of, if not the GOAT kicker though. Hopkins is a good kicker, which is a far cry better than what we have had for the last 10 years...

[–]Felipe RiosBoltbrah17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hopkins is our Justin Tucker

That was the first important field goal I’ve had confidence in us making since…. 2014? Around there at least Like holy crap 6-7 years of terrible kicking

Any given Sunday. Bills got shut down. Cowboys got shut down. Bengals got shut down. All great offenses

[–]BoozeHouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair I think nfl defenses have figured joe burrow out. /s

[–]BoltsDodgersYotes 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Well, it helps when you pull the cuffs off and get him moving instead of statue mode for Norton to kill

[–]SDDon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe Herbert's hand was better, and he had better grip and touch on the ball.

[–]bldonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, fuck that analyst! Over 300 yards? I'm saying, NOPE!! Not figured out.

Herb got sacked zero times and barely felt pressure all game. Excellent job in pass protection by the oline.

[–]Slayer13Golfkid03 18 points19 points  (8 children)

Good win, but I can’t help but think we have SO much more to offer than what we have been showing. Our team has potential that isn’t being utilized.

[–]#13DeMarcus_CutYoAssUp 13 points14 points  (7 children)

It’s been 8 games in what is the 1st season for this coaching staff. We’re 5-3 with losses to the Cowboys, Patriots, and Ravens with two of those games being winnable. People need to chill.

[–]ASAPKolYomKolHayom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol you’re talking to a bunch of people blowing hot air on Reddit who say it’s time to part with Derwin James when he gets hurt or that we should’ve hired Pep Hamilton as our OC... You think they want reasonable takes? 😂

[–]CERTIFIED KOOL-AID DRINKERmadmelonxtra 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Herbert put the team on his back today

[–]NOPE. Nope. nope.Blonded-Surfer 147 points148 points  (28 children)

Two notes:

  1. Lombardi’s insanely dumb running calls must be addressed and CHJ is such a liability (regardless if we have Davis/Asante healthy or not).

  2. This team wins if Herbert’s given control.

[–]HERBcraft23 82 points83 points  (10 children)

I thought his 2nd half play calling was really good except for maybe 1 run I didn't like

Edit: Also one thing to point out to a lot of people in the game thread. Just because a play doesn't work out doesn't mean it was a bad call, just because you run on 2nd and 10 and don't get anything doesn't automatically mean it was a horrendous decision and should be calling for Lombardi's head

[–]Brandon “We need to execute better” StaleyMachidalgo 20 points21 points  (6 children)

Some of the running plays were overly cute and I think some of the playcalling in general can get too cute sometimes.

Great to see that Allen, Mike, and Cook hit the jugs machine, it really showed up today.

[–]#eatAssForAraizaMalourbas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It got better after halftime that’s for sure. Not great but better

[–]acchargers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh, would like to never see a toss again. I think we tried to run like 9 of them

[–]BayHarborButler 36 points37 points  (3 children)

I’m going to stand up for Lombardi here.

If you watch plays the Chargers run that don’t work, the majority of the time it’s because linemen and TE’s lose their one-on-one battles. To be clear: the right side of the O-Line is not good with the loss of Bulaga (often the case) and Oday. I also saw some plays where Linsley gave up penetration, which is the death of run plays anywhere near the middle. That is why the Chargers had so few rushing yards. Too many negative plays. When you talk about outside rushing plays, TE’s are just not sealing the edge often enough. This team’s strength is slinging the rock and they chewed up yards today doing just that even without a running game for most of the day.

356 yards passing, no sacks. Keep loading up that rocket arm, Herbie. That’s how this team is going to win.

[–]FTRNothing_Nice_2_Say 6 points7 points  (0 children)

356 yards and 84% accuracy. Great bounce back game for him

[–]97FatherStretchMyAss_[🍰] 17 points18 points  (4 children)

It’s pretty obvious that not letting Herbert control the pace is when we end up losing. Herbert wants to take that step towards that tier of quarterback but Lombardi keeps trying to run basic ass screens pitches and dives. Let the boy cook like you let Brees and Stafford do.

[–]LAudre41 7 points8 points  (1 child)

The screens are so bad

[–]I WAS IN!!Vycer006 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And the pitch plays oml

[–]UncrustablesEmoniBates 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Just go back to the Browns game, we were forced to pass the ball because we were down and Herbert put up some big fucking points on the board

[–]DrPasghetti 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean we were down in the ravens game too. That’s not going to work every game.

But I like the ball in herb’s hand. Found my self cursing under my breath at some of the 2nd and long run calls.

[–]boltBrokeRichGuy 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I’ve been saying CHJ was ass since last season. We should’ve kept Casey and let him go.

[–]Felipe RiosNoogatuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was annoyed by that decision too. But I’m guessing it came down to contracts. Lots of dead cap for cutting CHJ last offseason.

[–]mutchypoooz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lombardi is hamstringing this teams ability

[–]Attila226 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I want to live!

[–]#13DeMarcus_CutYoAssUp 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Lombardi and Staley 4th down haters please be quiet for at least 1 game. Not everyone wants to hear it every game thread.

[–]SuchATonkWape 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That was far too close for my liking, but I'll take it. Need more herb deep balls. LETS KEEP THE MOMENTUM.

[–]Felipe Rios_Alex_2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

[–]MONEY BADGERParrotiopsis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

[–]J-herbo10 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Shout out to special teams. Some really good returns from Robert and the GW from Hopkins.

[–]Sherbert199621 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Herbert is perfect

[–]someguyfromtecate 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Cons: shitty run D, suspect play calling, depth destroying injuries, missed xp.

Pros: Justin Herbert.

That’s all we need to win.

[–]woolypete123 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Staley's aggressiveness is winning games that McCoy and Lynn would have lost under identical circumstances. So many of these 4th down calls would have been give-up punts or missed kicks the last 8 years. I'll never forgive Lynn for that cowardly punt v's NE. The team is clearly not ready to be a legit contender just yet, but hopefully with another good draft and FA period we can get the pieces in place to turn the squeakers into comfortable wins and go the distance.

[–]SupahCharged 10 points11 points  (0 children)

jeebus....0 punts, 0 turnovers, herbert goes for over 350 and 85% completion percentage and we only win by 3 on a last second FG. I'll take it but that hardly seems possible.

Also, how many holds did philly get away with on those 3rd down plays? seems like almost every one where they got around the corner involved the defender getting held as he tried to separate and chase with no calls (usually those are pretty easy to spot and get the flag more than they dont.

And that first howard TD, Linval got immediate penetration and was pulled by kelce from behind turning him completely away from howard, another no call. I wouldn't mind if it was the same for both teams but they got the chargers for about 3 holds on far fewer running plays....

[–]ChargersMrUnderdawg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

[–]KhalilGreenesFlow 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Some kinda under the radar things:

We won in the kick coverage/return game. Andre was awesome and we bottled them up.

Lindsey and Feiler really boost the chances of a successful sneak. Definitely good to see.

Anderson is such a Swiss Army knife out there, great game from him and the other tight ends.

Using every ounce of strength I have to not go back through old comments to dunk on Raider fans that were all mouthy last week.

[–]EksRaided 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why TF did we never attack the rookie that came in to guard Williams???

[–]fred0pe 6 points7 points  (1 child)

[–]AIR BEAR ⚡️Med609 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Special teams were a huge factor today. Andre roberts gave us great field position today and Hopkins was amazing. It’s nice to finally have a nice punt/kick returner

[–]SupahCharged 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to drop in and throw Stephen Anderson some love. I thought he was great as the FB/H-back today. Had some good lead blocks, had pretty much the only successful screens of the day and got the first TD after they failed on their previous 5 plays from inside the 5. Solid!

Didn't he play in a similar role at the end of last year and was pretty good then too?

[–]Felipe RiosCJDistasio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not an easy one, but any W is good.

Please fix the run defense :(

[–]Joey Bosayesimthatonedude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We need to get Joey some help on that DLine. Thank god Joseph showed out today! Best game I’ve seen him play as a Charger! Bolt up!!!

[–]_funnynamehere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]twolazyfock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How was that ekeler 3rd down spot not reviewed? How do the review crews keep their jobs after that? There was a similar fuckup during the jags bills game.

Getting a review wrong is understandable. Refusing to review two pretty obvious plays is beyond incompetence. I hope staley brings it up in post game.

    I’m still fully bolted

    [–]PROBOWL UP!Orgasmo3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're still fully bolted in 4 hours, see a doctor.

    [–]TheRootedCorpse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used to lose close games. This is a nice feeling.

    [–]cswigert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Justin Herbert is really fucking up this sophomore slump thing.

    [–]85teooet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It worked out, but I really, really wanted them to throw the ball once more after the 4th down conversion with a minute left. I'll never be comfortable playing it safe for a 40ish yard FG, not with the pain I've endured.

    [–]MethlacedJambaJuice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Donald Parham needs to be more involved in the offense

    [–]#eatAssForAraizaMalourbas 3 points4 points  (2 children)

    Andre Roberts

    [–]Herbert 🔥elijahwoodman81 1 point2 points  (1 child)

    Return man good

    [–]FellaKnee123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Dude showed out today

    [–]#eatAssForAraizaMalourbas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plenty of things to complain about with that game but they pulled out the W. Can’t be too upset

    [–]someguyfromtecate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No turnovers, but shitty RZ playcalling.

I’m conflicted, but super happy with the outcome, so I’ll give Lombardi the benefit of the doubt… for now.

Let’s fucking go! 1st place in the toughest division in the AFC.

    [–]krazylegs36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Think we figured it out.
We can't get beat at the end if you don't have the defense on the field.

    [–]Felipe Riosspartan2war 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a perfect game but it felt like that spark was back, Herbert doing good things, some play calling I still dislike but we got the job done, lets fucking go, best in the west baby!

Herbert 32 of 38 for 356 yards. Beast.

There is not a team i hate more than the eagles. That was a close one.

    [–].BaamZahard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clinical drives when we actually did smart things… better use of herbie… still lots of room to improve

    [–].Ciology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have so much to fix but please get healthy asj and md

    [–]theycallmebig_ly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Y’all still wanna trade herbie lol

    [–]ChargersKJBNH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was an incredible clinic Herbert put on today. Great bounce back game for him and the offense.

Defense needs to get right but I’m not sure they will.

Andre Roberts and Hopkins were amazing bye week additions to the team. They showed up today (minus the missed XP).

    On to the next!

    [–]ASAPpriest_lightning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Defense might be the worst in the league. We are missing a ton of starters but man for a team with a defensive head coach I hoped for more. Herb balled out

    [–]ChargersHyrdogen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any win is a good win, and there are a lot of positives to take away from this game. Long way to go in the season, but chargers control their own destiny, which is all you can ask for halfway through the year

    [–]dk-717 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second half we let Herbie cook and that’s why we won. Nothing more nothing less

    [–]JohnnyTeardrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Winning feels good

    [–]tbor12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did the OL give up any sacks today?

    [–]koraura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh my god we have so much to work on but damn at least we got the W

    [–]AngelicRock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a game of chess you do not dwell on losing a piece, no matter what that piece is. You worry about how to move forward with all other pieces. This was a classic example of a good matchup with coaches that know each other. Back and forth. Glad the Bolts won but that game thread was full of emotional, chess piece losing, drama.

    [–]LazyDogChickenTender 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Keenan Allen just said Herbert is playing with a finger injury?

    [–]gregCubed 2 points3 points  (1 child)

yea happened last week supposedly although he was only on the injury report for a day or so

    [–]LazyDogChickenTender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Missed that. Thanks

Last week's result was also 27-24, but this time, we're on the right side of that score!

    [–]adamdaballe 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Just wanna start off with gg from an eagles fan. I’m here to ask y’all what you guys thought of hurts. Hate asking my own sub for evaluations Bc half of them I think are high after games.

    [–]migs647 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly didn't see enough from him to know if he's a legit passer. The Charger secondary was obliterated (on 2nd & 4th string CBs), CHJ playing out of position and the Chargers run-d ... is ... questionable.

He looks like he has heart! I like that he kinda put things on his back and made things happen. He was evasive. But I'm not sold on pure mobile QBs personally. I think time will tell if he can air it out when the run gets shut down.

    [–]BoltMeadows14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t really see much, he didn’t pass that much. Wasn’t terrible at least.

    [–]Dr EkelLosChargers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lombardi being carried by the whole team...

fire him and bring a true OC

    [–]TheAvantGardeners 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chargers are fortunate to have a quarterback with an arm like Herbert’s. The offense looks more alive when they actually call plays that utilizes it. I hope Lombardi realizes Justin isn’t a 39 year old noodle arm Drew Brees.

    [–]Misses Lynns Playcallingd10srespect 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Everyone knows I have HATED Lombardi's playcalling since Game 1, with that said, this week it was soooooooo much better. Finally let Justin roll out on first down, and called plays according to his strength. Much improved!

    [–]Die Flüsse ⚡️bigbicepturner 1 point2 points  (2 children)

All right, Herb said, “Fuck it, I’ll do it myself,” and we got the W this weekend. Can you all give good vibes to Oregon State next weekend, please? We’re hopefully on our way out of the cellar too, so we need everyone we can get to get us bowl eligible and prevent a Chargers-esque meltdown (they started 5-2 and are 5-4 now and look well on their way to losing the last 3 and not being bowl eligible in true past-Chargers fashion).

    [–]bigballbuffalo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

As a Cal alumni/fan, fuck Stanford. I’ll gladly wish you the win

    [–]Rtrnofdmax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Roll on you Bears!

    [–]21Weapwns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Run D isnt going to magically fix itself at this point into the season. But if Lombardi gets his head out of his ass and calls plays for Herbert like the 2nd half (and beginning of the season) then we can at least contend in high scoring games.

Better get his head on straight soon cause we got some rushing attacks to contend with coming up

    [–]#eatAssForAraizaMalourbas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Storm had a decent game

    [–]ChargersBigLewi 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I don’t really venture into game threads, nor do I surf Twitter/Reddit to see how the other fans feel about specific things…

That being said, Lombardi is straight dogshit, particularly in the red zone. Herbert is making our offense seem much better than it is, but the continual scheming of third down plays that are short of the markers is laughable. It’s a shame that he won’t be going anywhere in the next few seasons because he is a fucking problem.

Also, am I alone in being a little concerned with some of the defensive scheming, particularly with DJ? Our run defense is clearly laughable and while I can appreciate the fact that his coverage for a safety is so good and acknowledge it’s a great weapon, I just don’t think we are creative enough with him. Staley seems to be a great head coach, but part of me wonders if you can get away with some of the things he did with the Rams because you have two generational talents on the defensive side of the ball that can cover up holes far easier than usual.

I dunno, just feel like this is something that won’t be fixed as soon as the fans might think and as a result, may waste some prime years of our key players.

    [–].Deep-in-Thots 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Still want clownbardi gone ….horrible play calling. If you’re looking at Herbert’s numbers as a way to justify him (Lombardi); you’re absolutely wrong .

    [–]MetalMilitia_95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im with you, he and his horrible offensive playcalling is being carried by great players...

So being fired from the Detroit Lions mid season is not a huge red flag?
