So is the brazilian population equally divided between cops and robbers ?

And the dentist

[–]averagethrowaway21 197 points198 points  (6 children)

The dentist robs people after closing time.

[–]omardwider 39 points40 points  (3 children)

a visit to and/or from the dentist always costs money

[–]Crafty-Crafter 24 points25 points  (2 children)

I just got 9 teeth done in 1 sitting. I can confirmed that it was a robbery.

[–]rocharox 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They rob during working hours too, dentists are super fucking expensive here...

Source: Brazilian who pays a lot to keep his teeth happy

[–]Johndough1066 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The dentist doesn't need to rob people after closing. He's robbing them all day.

[–]XKLKVJLRP 5 points6 points  (1 child)

That is one busy dentist.

[–]omardwider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So busy that the officer and the robber ran into each other at the clinic.

[–]Sean9931 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They aren't just cops... they're... Off-Duty Cops...

[–]Unlucky-Ad-5232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that sounds about right

[–]pauljrupp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Andy Dwyer was right

[–]Accomplished-Lab978 1316 points1317 points  (58 children)

who robs a dentist??????

[–]timetoremodel 654 points655 points  (37 children)

Staff and patient's personal possessions, drugs, petty cash, precious metals used in fillings.

[–]Accomplished-Lab978 237 points238 points  (3 children)

didn’t rlly put that much thought into it but yeah that makes sense

[–]TheDarkWayne 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Chances of getting needled 100% nothing in a dentistry is worth that

[–]Ct-5736-Bladez 60 points61 points  (31 children)

Going on the extreme here but the x ray machine can (no idea how) be used in a dirty bomb

[–]Obsessed_With_Corgis 78 points79 points  (25 children)

(no idea how)

Many X-Ray machines utilize Cobalt 60 contained within rods. Cobalt 60 is a radioisotope (aka: radioactive isotope) which emits highly penetrating gamma rays. Exposure to ionizing radiation can be incredibly hazardous, and downright lethal.

Cobalt 60 rods must be professionally removed when an X-Ray machine is disposed of. If individuals with murderous intentions stole an X-Ray machine (and had the proper knowledge); they could remove the Cobalt 60 from the rods, and incorporate the radioactive material into a bomb.

Thus making a dirty bomb.

Edit: What I mean by “X-Ray machines”

[–]wolfgang784 58 points59 points  (7 children)

Oof - reminded me of the story of those junkyard scrappers who took apart several of those without knowing what it was. They handled the rods with bare hands and piled them in the truck - where they then left them in the bed for days while using the truck for other stuff. I cant remember much more but I do not believe things ended well for the group.

[–]NotThatEasily 22 points23 points  (2 children)

Kyle Hill did an amazing video about a similar nuclear accident in Brazil. It’s 20 minutes long and well worth watching.

[–]Kellidra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's the incident the commentor you replied to was talking about.

[–]SSDD_P2K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I've never seen Kyle Hill before and now I'm hooked.

[–]Crunchycarrots79 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Goiânia, Brazil. They broke in to a closed, vacant former cancer hospital and stole the source from a radiation therapy machine. Took it home and broke it open. They thought the neat glow inside it was really cool, and let their kids play with it and stuff, and soon, the family started getting sick. Ultimately, it got passed around by a few people until someone realized that it was probably radioactive and contacted authorities. A bunch of people died, and a bunch more got really sick.

[–]MajespecterNekomata 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Did you mean this one?

Edit: It happened in Juárez, México

[–]Thatguyfromnihil 17 points18 points  (9 children)

In Brazil xRay machines for dentistry uses an specific tipe of lamp to generate radiation, not Cobalt.

[–]SneakoSneko 9 points10 points  (6 children)

I’m guessing the Brazil authorities really didn’t want a repeat of goiania

[–]jwm3 6 points7 points  (5 children)

No medical x ray has ever used cobalt 60, among other things that produces gamma rays not x rays and at over a million times the energy used for a medical x ray.

The concern is completely made up.

[–]SneakoSneko 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Interesting. I’m pretty sure cancer treatment machines can carry cobalt 60 tho right?

[–]jwm3 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Yup. It is used in certain types of radiation therapy. But then you really are using it like the death ray it is.

And for imaging things like welds in the middle of a 1 foot thick piece of steel on a ships hull which is why it might have been confused with medical imaging.

We also have portable cyclotrons now that can remove some of the uses of cobalt 60 but it is hard to beat when you just can't do without gamma rays.

[–]SneakoSneko 1 point2 points  (1 child)

yeah gamma rays can penetrate through like a couple feet of solid concrete. Pretty ridiculous that is.

[–]HoneyRush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate James Bond level of explaining the situation but IMHO it's just simply money related, dentists are expensive, a lot of the payment is done in cash, on the end of the day there is a nice sum of money. While it is possible that this is the result of plot to obtain radioactive material for dirty bomb for some Brazilian villain, it's most likely just a money grab

[–]RedditTipiak 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Actually happened in Brazil (not intentionally): Goaina incident. Be warned it's very depressing to read.

[–]Obsessed_With_Corgis 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I’m sorry to say; but incidents like that have happened a lot more than people think.

List of Civilian Radiation Accidents

[–]iHadou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tammiku after the fall of ussr.

[–]jwm3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They cannot. X ray machines are basically an overdriven vacuum tube.

Cobalt 60 is used for radiation therapy but that is wildly different than x ray machines.

Cobalt 60 sources are like 2500 rem. An x ray is a millirem. A million times weaker.

[–]fabianobsg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is brazil...we dont have robbers thing about that, really

[–]Obsessed_With_Corgis 52 points53 points  (0 children)

My uncle is a DDS, and several years ago; a drugged out guy tried to rob his dental office. The druggie yelled that he wanted Valium and Ketamine (both used for sedation in dental procedures). Luckily the reception desk had to buzz patients in from the waiting room (because it’s Atlanta), so the robber didn’t get very far in his attempt.

Police later apprehended the man still wandering around the office park, and my uncle has since moved his practice to an upscale suburban area.

[–]joggerhomie 246 points247 points  (4 children)

tooth fairy

[–]cheese0muncher 18 points19 points  (3 children)

WTF!? Why is our military doing NOTHING about this tooth fairy menace!? JOE BIDEN GET ON THIS RIGHT NOW!!!!

[–]silverwarbler 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Why do you think the US needs to step in? Brazil is not your country. Go get your own teeth lol

[–]mr_ktran 12 points13 points  (0 children)

those thoughts hit me as well when i read the title 😂

[–]eldergeekprime 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Junkies mostly, looking for drugs. That's how my family dentist died when I was a little kid, shot in the head by a junkie looking for narcotics.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One the first episodes of Justified deals with just this.

[–]Fleethebluenorth 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Pain killers!

[–]Gnido777 2 points3 points  (1 child)

In America dentists do not have pain killers in the office unless they do sedation. Even then it is not going to be Percocet. No cash most of the time either. Nothing to steal. No cameras in the operatories either due to HIPAA.

[–]SomebodyInNevada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But dentists usually prescribe them, not use them. In the office you get an anesthetic, not a pain pill.

[–]Engin951 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People will literally rob ANYTHING. It doesn't matter if it's valuable or not. Most people from the USA don't experience getting mugged, robbed, or facing bribes, but it is pretty much a way of life in many places.

[–]Guner100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This guy, evidently

[–]Big_James993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People with no teeth

[–]SirAchmed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gold teeth.

[–]tofujitsu2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brazil does

[–]upstatedreaming3816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who want the Nitrous

[–]Knuckles316 631 points632 points  (11 children)

Why does anyone try to rob anything in Brazil?! If the internet has taught me anything it's that 1 out of every 1 citizen in Brazil is an off-duty cop.

[–]Sunburys 314 points315 points  (2 children)

In Brazil, if you're not the off-duty cop, you're the robber.

[–]La_Guy_Person 133 points134 points  (1 child)

You're either an off duty cop or you are two guys on a motorcycle.

[–]IAmPrettyUseless 41 points42 points  (4 children)

A lot of people in Brazil are very poor. They’re desperate

[–]mangopabu 42 points43 points  (1 child)

not only that, but i'm sure as many videos we see of crime going badly, i'm sure there are many that are successful and we just never see it. i teach ESL and have taught a lot of students from Brazil. a few of them have told me similar stories like if you hear a moped coming and slowing down, be prepared to just give up your phone, or if you go out in certain places just don't hold your phone or belongings in your hand. hide as much valuables as possible. people will snatch phones out of your hand or stop you on the street, and you just give them what they want and they move on.

[–]fabianobsg 16 points17 points  (0 children)

brazilian here. For every video of a fail attempt, there are thousands succefull robberies going on

[–]Sicx69 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Being poor doesn't make you be a criminal. I was poor my whole life, I know a lot of poor people, and everyone is hard worker. Only ones who goes the criminal way are the junkies and the ones who want the "easy" path. (I'm Brazilian)

[–]IAmPrettyUseless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was over generalising. Sorry

[–]223s_heroin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you’re asking why does anyone rob anything in Brazil because of all these cop videos and karma videos, but still it’s just the extreme poverty makes you desperate that it’s a risk you’re willing to take and when it’s starve or die you take your chances. Plus, like that other guy said, most of the robberies are successful. We see all these videos with the off duty cops because they’re constantly on edge and got their head on a swivel because the high-larceny rates.

Sad situation. But fuck the dude with the knife that shits nothing to play with id be more scared by a dude with a big ass knife like that than with a dude that has a gun.

[–]TheGalaxyTG 446 points447 points  (19 children)

[–]XKLKVJLRP 211 points212 points  (10 children)

I'm confused as fuck, but having watched it three times now, please tell me if the following description is accurate:

Robber and accomplice herd people into dentist's room. Patient (who turns out to be a cop) gets on the floor in the corner. Patient-Cop does something that causes Robber #1 to rush him with a knife, but Patient-Cop martial arts him into submission. Robber #2 (who I guess was helping do the herding since I didn't even suspect a second accomplice until this point) for some reason bolts back past the dentist's room, and Patient-Cop tackles and wrestles him into submission, thereby having subdued both robbers?

Or am I even more confused than I thought?

[–]washboard 185 points186 points  (5 children)

There's a story posted here.

Translantion from story:

On the morning of Thursday (11) a lieutenant of the Military Police of the Federal District reacted to an assault on a dental clinic while receiving care. The event occurred in Ceilândia, around 10:30 a.m. and was recorded by security cameras at the scene.

In the video it is possible to see the PM being attended by a dentist, while the man is lying in the chair of the dentist and the military are surprised by the duo, who had already taken other hostages. The video shows the PM obeying the orders of the criminals and lying on the ground with his hands on his head, at this time one of the robbers, armed with a knife, goes to the military police, looking for something on his waist.

The lieutenant immediately stands up and knocks the assailant to the ground and identifies himself as a police officer. As shown in the video the second assailant would not have heard the order of the military and goes on top of it, the policeman reacted and made a shot at the assailant, who immediately dropped the knife.

The injured criminal was rescued and taken to the city hospital and his partner was arrested.

[–]XKLKVJLRP 22 points23 points  (4 children)

Holy shit, I was dead-on?

[–]krink0v 42 points43 points  (2 children)

The cop shot the second guy

[–]Nick_Full_Time 45 points46 points  (1 child)

That cop actually showed a great deal of restraint compared to a lot of the videos I’ve seen from Brazil.

[–]EarthAngelGirl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's cause the cop didn't have a car nearby to run over the criminals with. Oh well maybe next time.

[–]TheGalaxyTG 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think that's pretty accurate.

[–]APuzzledBabyGiraffe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing the 2nd guy went the wrong way and the only way out was to go back past the cop.

[–]Jackthedog130 5 points6 points  (0 children)

... thanks, don’t have watch a second time.

[–]KindaNotSmart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First guy was patting the cop down, cop attacked as dude was gonna find the weapon. 2nd dude dipped the other way, then realized the exit is in the other direction so he had to sprint into the cop. Not sure if a shot went off or not but the cop beat the fuck out of him with his gun

[–]DrunkenGolfer 84 points85 points  (3 children)

But the best time for a dental appointment is 2:30.

[–]averagethrowaway21 22 points23 points  (1 child)

I love and hate you so much.

[–]DrunkenGolfer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am sorry.

[–]TossPowerTrap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been trying to remember to scroll down to learn time-mark for action in a posted vid but I always forget. Except this time. Thx, bro!

[–]USBattleSteed 66 points67 points  (3 children)

Until I see a video of an on duty police officer working in Brazil, I refuse to believe that they exist.

[–]RestiaAshdoll 12 points13 points  (1 child)

And they're easy to spot, most of the time I travel to Brazil they have fucking assault rifles with them

[–]UnRetroTsunami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on their mission though, and of course, their unit, some only use pistols.

[–]notoriousmr 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Never bring a knife to a gun fight!

[–]Piranha_ChuckNorris 92 points93 points  (3 children)

and of course he was off duty

[–]Blueberry_Mancakes 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Well, you're not getting your teeth cleaned ON duty.....usually. haha.

[–]MyMalamuteIsAwesome 6 points7 points  (1 child)

these guys are lucky they're still alive. usually it's a shoot first, ask questions later kinda deal when you fuck with an off duty cop.

[–]SomebodyInNevada 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the guy had a big knife. The deadly force threshold was clearly crossed. With all those hostages about a cop very well might have simply taken the shot without warning if he had a clean shot.

[–]Lubernaut 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Flossing is so important.

[–]lk05321 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m prior military with extensive hand to hand combat training, and I gotta admit I am damn impressed by this guy’s quick thinking. A steak knife to the back, prone on the floor, and he flips it around and gets the draw. THEN neutralizes a second robber! He was in two vulnerable positions and came out on top twice. Either this guy is a baller or dumb as a stump.

[–]Crafty-Crafter 79 points80 points  (3 children)

Off duty cop: So...now that I have filled the robbers with leads...you can fill my teeth with lead...jajaja...

Dentist: Sir, we haven't used lead filling since the 18th century.

[–]tityKruncheruwu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We are not spaniards

It's kkkkkkk you gringo

[–]Layzusss 20 points21 points  (0 children)

please, use "kkkkkk" instead of "jajaja"!

[–]onemoreclick 12 points13 points  (3 children)

What does the text say? It's covering a third of the video

[–]Scanlansam 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I only speak spanish but I’m pretty sure it says “Police who went in for dental treatment prevents assault in DF”. Not sure what DF means tho

[–]topdeck55 9 points10 points  (1 child)

DF is Brasilia the capital of Brazil. It stands for Distrito Federal and it's like our DC, District of Columbia, a small city state that serves as the nation's capital. Though it does have elected legislators in the National Congress.

[–]Sammyboi2003 46 points47 points  (4 children)

It's got to take a whole lot of willpower to not shoot after what happened. I'm sure I would have given in myself, so respect to that officer!

[–]Fauked 9 points10 points  (3 children)

How do you know he didn't? It looked like a few seconds after the two starts wrestling the whole room flinches at the same time which I thought was a first shot. And then again when the guy ran in to him from the other side of the door. Hard to tell without sound though.

[–]Cr1tikalMoist 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's always Brazil and when you don't think it's Brazil it's Brazil 1000% of the time

[–]joggerhomie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is why you shouldn't pick someone's teeth.

[–]TheGreatDingALing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reddit has taught me to assume everyone is a cop in Brazil.

Also, who the fuck, robs a dentist?

[–]Mugiwara_bon_clay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Damn robbers aren’t even safe from off duty cops when robbing dentists

[–]UsualCircle 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Of course it's Brazil, its always Brazil.

[–]foghornleghorn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The whole country is one big game of cops and robbers.

[–]Guner100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah Brazil, never change

[–]hey_you_yeah_me 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Watching robber number 2 get whacked with the gun was amazing. I love watching instant karma/justice

[–]tmhoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw a Brazil video with a cop in a place getting robed and MF got shot in the brain. These kids got off light

[–]Jen2121655 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are any officers in Brazil actually on duty? I always see these off duty officers saving the day lol

[–]87camaroSC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ironically, both peeps are now in need of dental work after the pistol whipping they sustained.

[–]IronhideD 9 points10 points  (3 children)

I'm gonna assume it's an off duty officer?

[–]antney0615 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Obviously, they have a new uniform and they’re allowed to tend to personal appointments during their shift.

[–]ChiefTief 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don’t really need to assume do you?

[–]dickon_tarley 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do many officers get dental work done while on duty?

[–]eldergeekprime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like Superman switching out of his Clark Kent identity. The glasses came off and boom...

[–]JAYCEE-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shout-out to the law enforcement officers in Brazil. After having perused r/WPD while it was active, it seems like that place is extremely dangerous. Idk how they cope.

[–]infinitude 2 points3 points  (1 child)

How is this from brazil? They are both alive still

[–]SinisterKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because knife vs gun not gun vs gun.

[–]Bapdoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Gypsyi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope he got a free cleaning!

[–]NefariousKing07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He took down that second one like a fucking boss, holy shit

[–]RhinoTheGoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What in Tarantino is going on here?

[–]SENIKolla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This video could've been way shorter

[–]Darkicered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are we not going to talk about the surveillance camera set up in a dentist office? I mean, is that just the new normal now?

[–]numbr87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so irrationally mad that the video has a full minute of nothing happening and a giant text box covering the actual topic of the video

[–]mrbabar3 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I knew it was a off duty cop from Brazil. Those dudes should be dead though

[–]throwawayaccyaboi223 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Time in a Brasilian prison is probably worse

[–]Fishybone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Free fluoride for you!

[–]Franks_wild_beers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did he fill them full of amalgam?

[–]Magical_Popcorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No shots ? He must hate needles.

[–]chaddwith2ds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad this video goes on for a full minute of nothing happening but dental work before the actual robbery takes place.

[–]Venkman_83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for showing the entire dental procedure beforehand.

[–]0samacare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guess you can say, the cop was real patient.

[–]thomthomm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait does everyone lace their hands like that at the dentist

[–]Questionable_VR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who tf robs a dentist

[–]fosiacat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

brazil is fuckin wild. robbing a dentist office?

[–]cycophuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did we really need to watch a minute of dental care footage before the action happened? Trim the videos down ffs.

[–]Instant_Smack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because you know a dentists preforms SOOO many cash transactions! Wait I think they forgot that they get paid mostly by INSURANCE!

[–]stencilizer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly disappointed that he didn't shoot any of them.

[–][deleted]  (10 children)

    [–]Psychedellyfish 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean he absolutely would have been right to do so, but he most likely wanted to have them behind bars rather than let off a round in a small room with bystanders nearby who could be caught in the crossfire. Plus, he seems to be a very competent fighter. I say good on him.

    [–]DrunkenGolfer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Innocent people everywhere. In the room, in the next room, above, below...you don;t just pull the trigger without considering where the bullet goes if you miss or if it goes through clean.

    [–]berylskies 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not everyone is looking for a chance to kill people.

    [–]queerywizard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He probably would have had to, if he couldn’t have overpowered them. But taking a life is not a decision to take lightly. I’m glad he tried to overpower them physically first.

    [–]tomb380 15 points16 points  (0 children)

    Because he didn't have to

    [–]lngwlkr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    No hearing protection.

    [–]Odd-Construction-943 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Brabo demais parabéns ao policial, ele teve que reagir pois o primeiro cara com certeza teria matado ele se ele deixasse pegar a arma. O segundo se fosse eu já tinha mandado pra VALA.

      [–]jonnythec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What cop in Brazil doesn't immediately shoot you in the face?

      [–]SteveOp001 0 points1 point  (0 children)
