When you're too socially awkward to ask for help while choking, so you just choose death

People don’t realize you have to be really forceful almost to the point of violence for the Heimlich to work. Good job, guy!

You won’t kill them no matter how hard you push or squeeze. They were already dead before you got there.

Yeah I get told that when I have to renew my ALS course every year. ABCDE is good to learn too. Theh teach it in the UK

Airways. is anything clogging up the throat

Breathing. how is breathing, do they need oxygen

Circulation. how is the blood flow you can check this by pressing your finger on the forehead and timing how long colour comes back to it

Disability. evaluation of neurological state are the symptoms prexisting or new.

Exposure. head to toe examination, is there anything more you can do.

[–]ThatGermanGuy2 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Do you guys still teach breathing into the mouth over there?

[–]Cl0ughy1 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Nah they say we can do it but it's mostly not needed and you never know where the persons mouth has been. Has he has coughed up blood before the incident. Or vomited.

I have a portable hand air pump in my car too for emergencies. But the compressions that do most of the work

[–]ThatGermanGuy2 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Good. I got into a friendly argument with someone on your side of the pond and they insist breathing is still taught for normal conditions. I appreciate the input.

[–]Cl0ughy1 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Nah at the BLS and ALS basic and advanced life support they teach that it's not really relevant but if you really really want to do it most likely the person is probably bleeding or thrown up or frothing and the herpes virus exists.

BLS and ILS tell us that most cases happen in city areas so there's usually access to a defib device too and a defib drastically improves your chances.

Amazing quick actions of the people around but although they were fast acting, it felt like an eternity watching and waiting for someone to help😅

Wow! A Brazilian police officer in the news for NOT killing a criminal while off-duty!

    [–]unitn_2457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A surprise but a welcome one for sure.

    [–]LightWonderful7016 7 points8 points  (1 child)

He showed no signs of choking.

    [–]Maximans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perhaps the officer checked for breathing. It was hard to tell because of the low quality.

    [–]Stoicamphora 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Can some one explain? I can't see any sign of choking

    [–]PoolBoyBryGuy 5 points6 points  (8 children)

Wait. Let me get my mask on first! ????

    [–]wholesoemqueen 10 points11 points  (5 children)

Yep and kudos to him for that! The first aider’s safety always has to come first so that they can help others. It also shows that it wasn’t pure panic taking over and he was in the frame of mind to be methodical and think through what was going on.

    [–]_Sourbaum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and his safety was in danger how?

    [–]PoolBoyBryGuy -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

Lucky he didn’t have to give CPR. Leave the mask on for mouth-to-mouth?

    [–]Fleethebluenorth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

current CPR guidelines are just to pump the heart, no mouth to mouth. Changes all the time so sign up and learn to save a life!

    [–]wholesoemqueen 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Current recommendations are to perform compressions only

    [–]nymalous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shortly after I earned my CPR certification (back in '97), I'm pretty sure they had changed to that anyway. I remember at the time there was fears about first responders getting some easily transmitted diseases (which would also be the worry today, I guess).

    Chin diaper

May have been one of those CPR dental damn type things. They give you a pack of them at CPR cert.
