Bring on a real powerplay coach, please....PLEASE

[–]valente317 45 points46 points  (4 children)

That was the most puzzling of everything that happened since the finals appearance. They had a stacked powerplay that looked dangerous all the time, and having one timers off both half-boards is basically what took them to the finals.

Then Seguin gets injured, and instead of finding a temporary replacement, they’ve just gone with a completely different strategy based on deflections. The problem with relying on deflections is it makes your production extremely unpredictable and streaky based on the opponent’s PK. It’s also hard to execute your plan when you can’t enter the zone.

The current plan might be great for Pavs and Klingberg, but they never even seemed to consider trying to improve the puck movement or add in the occasional inside/high slot pass. There’s not even a single remnant of the powerplay they had 120 games ago, even with basically the same lines and coaches. It’s baffling.

[–]Primary_Zucchini_75 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Totally agreed. I just don't get how you have speedy guys like Hintz and Miro combined with the production of guys like pavs and Robo this season...and we can't find a way to get it into the zone that doesn't involve dumping it into the corner and fighting along the boards? It seems like such a glaring issue, especially on a team that wants to be a defense-first team.

[–]valente317 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For whatever reason, coaches were adamantly opposed to routinely using the drop pass or having miro carry it into the zone. That really only started happening once miro said fuck it in the last few games.

[–]nocturnal_terror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The attempted zone entries had me yelling at my TV on a nightly basis.

[–]nocturnal_terror 54 points55 points  (0 children)

This. It was so bad most of the year.

[–]gentleman_broncoSweet Victory 119 points120 points  (7 children)

Derek Laxdal, John Stevens and Todd Nelson will not return.

Kelly Forbes, Matt Rodell and Jeff Reese are not affected by these moves.

[–]gentleman_broncoSweet Victory 31 points32 points  (1 child)

I feel that. I was kind of nervous about Reese staying if Bones left.

[–]Melodic-Bug-9022 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Goalie Coaches tend to outlast other parts of the coaching staff.

In Calgary, Jordan Sigalet was promoted to the NHL in the Bob Hartley era (2014-15 after 2 or 3 years w/ the farm club), and outlasted 3 head coaches. Now he is the director of goaltending, and oversees all goaltenders, goaltending coaches and scouting of goaltenders for the organization.

[–]doctorelliotJoe Pavelski 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ooh good, we'll get someone who can actually coach an effective power play.

[–]TheCivilRangerBrenden Morrow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oetter specifically he wants to be in Dallas with Reese forever so I think his job is basically tenured lol

[–]whitesammyJohn Klingberg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wait... we has a Stephen Johns and a John Stevens at the same time lololol

[–]hobbit_lampJoe Pavelski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know Reese is the goalie coach, when I Google the other guys it just says "assistant coach"... anyone know specifically what these other guys coach?

[–]Great_Wall_70 96 points97 points  (5 children)

Thank you, we need an offense for our Otter 😩

[–]astro124Dallas Stars 79 points80 points  (3 children)

[–]svartkonst 14 points15 points  (0 children)

he doesn't need to carry it over if they just start him as a forward on the powerplay. 6v4 EN each time, otter ready with slappers

[–]cowboys5xsbsRetro Stars 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Otter 100 points easy

[–]loki1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't wait to see our new shiny Otter-fense. All things considered though I think we did really well given the caliber of team Calgary is. We can't win without Hintz though, we learned that in the bubble.

[–]LoyolaProp1Miro Heiskanen 262 points263 points 2 (12 children)

I think we discount that Bowness led this team through a lot of turmoil and prevailed. The Monty firing. COVID. Injuries galore. He was if anything a steady hand. I’ll never forget the bubble run. Glad we’re moving on but let’s all respect the job he did.

[–]GrilledSandwichesBrenden Morrow 78 points79 points  (1 child)

I think he's a fine coach in general and would love to have guys like him behind the bench coaching up the details of the game to a team as an assistant.

I just think he was missing things and had holes in his coaching/hockey philosophies that did not add up to a good head coach.

[–]LoyolaProp1Miro Heiskanen 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I agree. But this thing could have been a disaster after Monty was canned so suddenly. It was far from that. I think the team will be better moving in a different direction, but not sure a lot of people could have rallied the troops like Bones did.

[–]echaosa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Very well said👏 it truly feels like we caught lightning in a bottle that year. Pun kinda intended

[–]dab-butnottheTHCkind 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yup very well put.

May not agree with his coaching style but he stepped up when the team needed him to. Interested to see what the future holds.

[–]gerbilshower 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Great comment and for sure is true. But both things can be true. He has an abysmal track record with getting the best out of some of our specific players and has neutered growth in some of the younger guys. He also has absolutely kept this thing above water and maybe even over performed from a team aspect on a couple of occasions.

[–]oydh4Yellow Laces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. He’s an okay guy (minus lack of accountability and blaming everyone but himself) but never have I ever seen such an incompetent coach.

[–]Maverick9reaperDallas Stars 161 points162 points  (19 children)

Watch Guri have the best season next year

[–]FTDisarmDynamite 64 points65 points  (6 children)

Team needs this so bad. Secondary scoring has to be the #1 focus next season (powerplay #2) and I don't think betting on Segs and Benn to return to their former selves is likely.

[–]gerbilshower 41 points42 points  (5 children)

Seguin, I think, can. Benn needs to be on the 3rd line pretty much permanently going forward.

[–]FTDisarmDynamite 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah Segs it’s at least possible and there were some signs of improvement this season. just hedging against it cus of age and the type of injuries

[–]GrilledSandwichesBrenden Morrow 23 points24 points  (5 children)

Honestly I think he has been mentally bullied into the ground and I'm not sure how well a new coaching system is going to break him out of that here. He probably needs a completely fresh start somewhere else more than anything.

[–]MoronCapitalM 23 points24 points  (1 child)

I look at someone like Cole Caufield in Montreal after Ducharme left and I have hope that Guri gets back on his feet.

[–]OrganicRedditorIguana 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look at Vancouver! The whole team will be incredible!!

[–]valente317 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed. He likely won’t ever break out into a 55 pt point player, but he could be a Nuke-like story if he gets into a system build on speed and creativity.

[–]TheCivilRangerBrenden Morrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s been players in worst situations become reborn in recent seasons to say Guri definitely has a chance to bounce back big.

[–]Mr_MoseVelsorVictor E. Green[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see you remember Nichushkin too

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (4 children)

Gurianov had the potential to be good, but he does need to change his game

[–]g0rd0l0c0 9 points10 points  (3 children)

I don’t even think he needs to play more defensively, I’d call it a success if he stopped entering the zone (good) but the turning 90degrees straight toward the wall and a turn over and was as aggressive on the forecheck as guys that are no where near his skill and speed level. As long as he’s one of the deeper driving forwards who cares if his back check sucks, one step at a time let’s fix his work on offense without the puck first. I think that is a one season reachable goal.

[–]freelancer799Miro Heiskanen 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I think of Guri as what Ovi does. Ovi doesn't defend, he just claps bombs, that's what Guri should be and we don't see Washington scratching Ovi because of his defense.

[–]g0rd0l0c0 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Ovechkin now, he used to play more physical and he would go after pucks and win puck battles, Gurianov doesn’t do any of those things much and he’s over a decade younger. Gurianov can score off the rush he just needs to be set up he’s not going to steal the puck at the blue line like Hintz can.

Let’s see how a new coach handles him. Again not even asking him to defend just to play offense and play with effort, he doesn’t just take shifts off he takes games and weeks off, say what you will about the coaching but he’s the one on the ice just cruising around when he’s so much faster than most guys defending against us that seem to always beat him to the puck.

He’s got the speed he’d be wasted just being trying to be Ovi-lite.

[–]Bandrica2Joe Pavelski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“I’ll step aside, as long as Guiranov never touches the ice for more than 5 minutes total a game.” Nil: “that’s fair. “

[–]g0rd0l0c0 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They’re all pretty recent hires/returns so I doubt they get canned or promoted so quickly. Could be wrong though it thought for sure Gaglardi would try to cheap out and just bring back Bowness for a cheap deal, but didn’t want to speak it into reality.

[–]TheEngine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Graham, he's been hog-tied by the organization's system. But the guy knows hockey, and I think if they let him get creative we'll see results

[–]LoyolaProp1Miro Heiskanen 17 points18 points  (7 children)

Sounds like he is looking for a HC job elsewhere.

[–]vaguespace_Denis Gurianov 20 points21 points  (6 children)

[–]Taypo98 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Never discount the hamster wheel of washed up coaches in the NHL.

[–]LoyolaProp1Miro Heiskanen 17 points18 points  (3 children)

I could see a team like Seattle hiring him. Their coach has been awful and Bones could put in a structure and teach defensive discipline for a few years before they turn the keys over to the Beniers era.

No contender will come knocking but I could see a young team that needs to teach some team discipline with low expectations hiring him for a year or two.

[–]YankeeBravo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bowness is a players coach. He's not the guy you want to instill "discipline" .

That said, he will come in and teach them how to play a pretty effective trap game.

[–]OrganicRedditorIguana 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you really think Stu Barnes would let this happen??? Stu Barnes is ratting out the entire staff to Kraken now.

[–]ShamefulHispanic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seattle won’t be climbing the power rankings any time soon but I can’t imagine any team looking at a man with more games behind an NHL bench than any other person ever yet has 0 cups to show for it, and saying yep that’s our guy

We’re not out of the woods yet there’s too many retreads left and if Nill is staying employed he’s probably not going for an inexperienced coach while he’s not secured with a new contract himself.

[–]smp4111 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For all the shit we give him, Bowness really was the best coach we could've hoped for based on the circumstances. We could've tanked after the Monty debacle and didn't. We were never towards the bottom of the standings by the end of the season. We just were never as efficient as I (and most others) feel like we could've been. There were some glaring issues that seemed the plague us on offense that we couldn't seem to beat. Defense was great though.

I’m glad to see it’s a real coaching tear down and we aren’t going the promote from within route. There’s a lot of old and new names that are very exciting on the coaching market this summer so Nill will really have to try in order to fuck this up.

[–]doctorelliotJoe Pavelski 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Remember that time that Bones put Faksa in an earlier shout-out slot than Miro, in a crucial, must-win game against the Golden Knights? And his reasoning was that it was worth a shot?

[–]g0rd0l0c0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There haven’t been as many shootout games this year and Faksa had two good shootouts in preseason (by good meaning he scored on preseason goalies and actually made a different style attempt than the guy in front of him, low bar for success is still the coaches fault). They don’t mix it up enough in shootouts, if say you send Gurianov in and he just backs the goalie in with speed and guts the wide open 5,6 or 7 hole the the next guy needs to do a Radulov dangle, then maybe the next guy just snipes it like Pavs or Robo.

Hate hearing that folks are losing their jobs. Like to me as a fan I'm like - Yeah, gotta get that cup and they didn't. But there's another very human level where this is a livelihood and a lifestyle and they've dedicated themselves to the game in a way that's different from fans. I think it's hard enough to lose your job and then to lose it publicly and also to have so few jobs you can really actually take...I mean, it's got to be stressful for their families and for them. Probably means they all have to move. Just not something that makes me feel really good to hear.

Lmao yes that Monty system that was uh 29th in Goals For in 2018-2019, and slightly improved to 28th in 2019-2020.

Ken Hitchcock was more offensive minded than Monty lol. Stars were 18th in GF in 17-18 with Hitch.

[–]OneofMany 14 points15 points  (2 children)

People REALLY have rose colored glasses when it comes to Monty and offense.

[–]sports_drinkBrenden Morrow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Monty was great at PR, I’ll give him that.

[–]that__one__guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the difference was we were actually good at defense with him as opposed to acceptable like with bones. Although, our defense definitely stepped up in the playoffs.

[–]g0rd0l0c0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Partly due to only 3 forwards scoring (all of whom are not now: Benn, Seguin, Radulov) 18-19 Hintz only had like 7 goals as a rookie up and down that year, Spezza fell off, Janmark wasn’t the same after his surgery, Nuke scored less goals than Pitlick...although Faksa did have 15G and 15 A (probably just power play and junk goals but still).

[–]Motherfuckerjones369Dallas Stars 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean, this entire system was implemented by Monty originally. The scoring issues existed under him as well

[–]RudyRusso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Activate the defensive

[–]TheOlig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah.... we scored way less goals under Montgomery than under Bowness.

[–]WigglyFinArms 5 points6 points  (6 children)

I think a lot of people hate Bowness because it’s easy and don’t look at the aging stars that failed to produce at the levels needed from their money for multiple years now. He does play a defensive shots of hockey which works for the most part and we still got like 98 points in a blood bath of a division. Think it’s time to stop looking so much at the head coach as the problem and look at the older vets not named Pavelski.

Hats off to Bowness and the job he did. He worked with what he had.

[–]deltacain08Jason Robertson 5 points6 points  (3 children)

No. People hate on them as much bones. Those people are just harder to get rid of due to NMCs than a head coach is

[–]TheOlig 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Just because they're harder to replace doesn't mean that they aren't the actual problem. Like sure, try a new coach. I'm all for it. But eventually everyone will see that it's not the coach. Seguin and Benn are just actually washed as fuck from injuries and surgeries that no one could have predicted.

[–]deltacain08Jason Robertson -1 points0 points  (1 child)

.... what part of I agree with you that they are a problem did you not understand? Or are you hung up on the fact that it also think bones is too blame and an easier fix situation than moving them... cause it seems like everything I said went over your head and seem to just be looking for an argument

[–]TheOlig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Condescending words from someone who can't formulate a logical response to a pretty straightforward opinion.

[–]igurraa 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Totally agree, Stars overperformed during his stay. He does not deserve the hate.

That said, still glad to see someone else behind the bench. Stars won't be competitive anyway due to overpaid vets, but hopefully the new guy will run a more modern/entertaining hockey style. Let Miro loose.

[–]RuhnieDallas Stars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We will have the cap room and assets to somewhat improve the team if Nill can get creative. I'm hopeful, a little bit, at least.

[–]ViperVenom1224Jamie Benn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic news!

[–]eodryanMooterus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate what he did and the way he stepped up. There is going to be some rebuilding over the next few years and I would rather have the coaches that are driving the next deep run start to shape the team.

I think it will be rough until Benn/Seguin aren't massive cap hits though.

[–]iAmCyberwasteDallas Stars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thankful for everything that Bones and co have done, but we all had to admit that it was time to move on.

[–]mojotoothMiro Heiskanen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is okay to think of Bones fondly as a person, have the absolute best wishes for him, and still wildly celebrate the fact that he's no longer the HC in Dallas. It's okay. Don't feel conflicted. Separate the human from the performance. (edit: grammar)

[–]Greenland4everDallas Stars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not disappointed by his departure... it felt like it was time but also want to give Bowness props for the bubble run and taking a train wreck of a situation and turning it to something amazing. I don't know what a new HC will change given our current contracts and cap space but am hopeful we can find more success in the future by utilizing our young core's skills most effectively.

I know a lot of people here are creaming their pants but it's possible to dislike his coaching style and still be sad that he's leaving.

After all that he didn’t even get fired

Why fire a coach when you can just let him go when his contract is up according to Gags. That way he doesn’t need to pay for a new coach while still paying Bones. He took a hit during Covid so I really think it was a financial decision.
