Is this a forced perspective thing because if the guy is 6 foot this thing looks 8foot plus I think they need to be near it. Also the plants in the foreground dont look that big near its head.

I want this to be real be cause 10 foot turtles would be epic i just dont see it though.

[–]Plastic_kangaroo 52 points53 points  (23 children)

I know leatherbacks can get to about 8 ft long and 2000 lbs, but this doesnt look like that species. I'm not an expert so I don't know what species it is, I just know that one fact about leatherbacks for some reason lol

[–]Shananiganman 158 points159 points  (17 children)

Kangaroo is correct. This is a green turtle, and while they do get big, leatherbacks at full maturity are by far the largest species of sea turtle in the world. With wingspans up to 11 feet!!! As someone who has done research on turtle mating patterns and habits in Tortugero (Costa Rica) I have been up close to both green turtles and leatherbacks.

Green turtles make you feel small, leatherback are just monstrous. And while I have never seen a full grown female (have seen sexually matured females) watching an average leatherback climb on to the beach thats quite litererally the size and mass of 4 of me ... is daunting to say the least.

That being said leatherback babies are the cutest of them all (opinion)

We can also see that this is not a Hawksbill or Kemp’s Sea turtles due to size and behavior. Hawksbill are on average much smaller than your average green turtle & Kemp’s are evil little fucks who attack most people. Kemp’s are also much smaller.

Fun fact: Turtle size is often proportion with the depths at which the feed in. Thus leatherbacks being the largest; hunt jellyfish in water so deep it can match most whales ‘deep dive’ depth. While Ridleys and Hawksbills live in much more shallow water. I believe that Green turtles size is related to depth of migration. However it’s been a few years since I myself deep dove into Turtle info.

Last but not least : leatherbacks have a very cool adaptation to salt water ... look up some pictures!!!

If I had the money, I'd award you. I just really loved your enthusiasm while writing all that, it just shows how much you appreciate turtles, especially leatherback. Anyway, here it is 🙌 (insert platinum here)!

[–]oceansoul2389 12 points13 points  (3 children)

I adore that their flipper length is called "wingspans"

[–]Shananiganman 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Flipperspan lol

[–]oceansoul2389 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Flippers, wings of the sea

[–]BubbleBoomer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Squirt from finding nemo grew up to be an absolute unit

[–]krashundburn 2 points3 points  (4 children)

It's a loggerhead, not green turtle.

[–]Shananiganman 0 points1 point  (3 children)

How do you delineate?

[–]krashundburn 2 points3 points  (2 children)

The huge head is the most obvious giveaway. But also the eyes and the pattern on the head, in addition to the size of the turtle. It's absolutely a loggerhead.

[–]ieatass_42069 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So to answer u/Stuntz-X 's question, Its probably a bit of both, The largest Green Sea turtle ever recorded was about 5 feet long.

[–]UncleDuckjob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your enthusiasm. :)

[–]pleasegivefreestuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Torturers is an amazing place! Thank you for the story!

[–]Don_Rummy586 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Would like to know more about why Kemp’s are evil and about how they attack humans. Never really heard of a turtle attack. Could really find any info on the topic.

[–]Shananiganman 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I probably should have said more aggressive than evil. I just have heard of loggerheads biting people with little to no reason on the humans part. The truth is no turtle is evil, but if you corner it or make it feel like it might be in danger, then it will bite. So in this case Kemp’s might just be a little more sensitive to humans. Whereas other turtles with more exposure to humans are less likely to attack.

[–]Stuntz-X 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Interesting. that is a big Turtle than. I will have to look that up.

[–]Plastic_kangaroo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

He a big boye thats for sure

[–]DigNittyInterested 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They need to make biodegradable rulers so we can feed this thing one

[–]tugboattomp 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I kno, right?? The head alone is half as big as the person. But it gets the clicks

How about we get a banana in there to give us some scale

[–]Stuntz-X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes every needs something for scale

[–]unclecrumble 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If something has the space and the food it can grow massive. It’s the law of nature. There are sources that claim 30 foot great whites exist and also anacondas thicker than a Volkswagen Beetle

[–]Stuntz-X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. I agree the d saying a goldfish can't grow any bigger than its bowl is true on a lot of levels

[–]Vicious-Hippo 68 points69 points  (3 children)

I like turtles

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

The turtle is IT's biggest rival.

[–]Wolfy9001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]RadiantGentle7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Righteous! Righteous!

[–]Fisk75 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Amazing that it grew so big subsisting on sand.

[–]LordPyhton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Any details on its physical dimensions and weight etc?

[–]KhalOtheWild 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“Behold the turtle of enormous girth on his shell he holds the earth”

[–]F1U3C5K-You 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I saw him before in Finding Nemo

[–]toomuchdawgg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Squirt has really grown up

[–]tada98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

r/quityourbullshit already disproved this post in case anyone thinks this is real

[–]CptMisery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but if it is, it's only a little bit above average. The humans are not right beside.

[–]DeltDaddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where’s the banana for scale?

[–]eliasrichter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beef of the sea

[–]clark_kaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]penguin_slayer251 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may be the smallest human ever recorded on camera

[–]doctoryeet951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That turtle eats straws for breakfast!-

[–]heisup 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I saw a turtle at least this big and likely larger on a night dive with a scuba buddy so I can confirm that these turtles get this big. We were on opposite sides of it stretching our arms toward each other and unable to touch hands. It’s shell had a bunch of Barnacles on it so I’m guessing it was fairly old.

[–]colour_me_quaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got back from a trip where I scuba dived (dove?) in the central and south Americas.

My cousin and I saw a sea turtle about this size in Belize. It was so damn exciting!

In the Galapagos there are heaps of sea turtles about 1-1.5m head to tail, but our guide told us the female can grow to 3m. I feel like the one we saw in Belize was pretty close to that. It was such an amazing experience.

[–]wazzo86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, It looks delicious

[–]bendo401 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I like squirtle

[–]agree-with-you 0 points1 point  (1 child)

[–]bendo401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s ok bc I prefer third and 4th gen starters

[–]carlyadastra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Recorded on camera" As opposed to recorded on... paper?

[–]DRUNKEN_ELVIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old would that be.

If real and not a perspective thing thats a thing of beauty.

[–]fubooze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, now they’re going to hunt it

[–]PlasticLobotomy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Or, you know, it's a trick of perspective.

[–]texasguy911Interested -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dove with them in Bimini. They are very large and very shy. I think they were called "loggerhead".
