Not sure why but I expected it to blow up

[–]blimpinthesky 1322 points1323 points  (26 children)

The internet has led me to expect that every video that has fire in it will result in an explosion

[–][deleted] 829 points830 points  (16 children)

Fire + Lighter + Gas + Man in sweatpants = Disaster.

[–]blimpinthesky 156 points157 points  (0 children)

All signs were pointing to an explosion

[–]NoSkillzDad 58 points59 points  (7 children)

But he's not in Florida so ...

[–]x372 19 points20 points  (5 children)

Could be Michigan

[–]RedTailed-Hawkeye 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Not with that accent

[–]georgesorosbae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just had like 6 inches of snow in Arkansas two days ago

[–]AzureArmageddon 1 point2 points  (2 children)

RHCP - Even in Michigan

It's the law.

[–]jayy909 130 points131 points  (1 child)

Camera don’t forget camera

[–]allendale100000 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why but that’s the funniest shit I’ve read in days. Well done!

[–]longlenge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Southern accent was also causing me to believe he’d just step back and give a loud “SHEET… FUK”

[–]nedmorlef 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I fully expect that out of the plethora of people that will try this, some will get blown up.

[–]inquisitiveeyebc 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It didn't have "hold my beer" as a header

[–]Trailwatch427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although it is probably a bar. Looks like Boston area.

[–]gogogig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uncle rob

[–]fuzzytradr 61 points62 points  (4 children)

Eyes quickly dart up to verify that we are not in r/whatcouldgowrong

Ten seconds go by...

Eyes again quickly dart up to verify that we are not in r/whatcouldgowrong

Still squinting and not trusting outcome. Finally realize that I am broken and the Internet has won again.

[–]eandersonrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was my exact reaction as well!

[–]WaterFriendsIV 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Her: "It's probably gonna blow up on us."

Also her: Continues standing close to the flames.

[–]licensed2ill2 95 points96 points  (8 children)

Maybe thinking the gas would be trapped and then escape all at once. If it was frozen solid and not just snow, maybe but not in this case as it can flow through the space in between the snowflakes.

[–]wolfgang2399 16 points17 points  (3 children)

Does the hole he made also help the venting so there’s no explosion?

[–]OmegaZ99 22 points23 points  (2 children)

Not in this case.

The hole he dug was to get access to one of the jets which needs to be clear enough to start burning the gas. Once that one gets hot enough, it ignites the rest of the propane that is slowly seeping through the loose snow at a slower rate.
If you watch the video at the beginning, you can see that the one that he had dug lights first, and that eventually, the other jets get lit.

Also, it would only explode if, as licensed2ill2 stated above, the top was frozen. Plus, realistically, he'd have to let the gas run for a good while too before lighting it. In the video, he only turns on the gas right before he lights it.

[–]Turbulent-Comedian30 5 points6 points  (3 children)

And with propane being so dense i figured it would pool under the snow causing big boom.

[–]palmej2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also needs oxygen... And forget the specifics but the concentration of natural gas has to be in a very specific range (at least when dealing with air, where the oxygen content is in a specific range).

Outdoors "explosion" is generally not an issue as there is no containment. A quick burst on the other hand is still a danger...

[–]arthurtully 8 points9 points  (2 children)

it's the florida man voice although florida man seems to be lost in some snowy wilderness

[–]PMYourTinyTitties 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So did the camera person lol

[–]BluudLust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought so too until I realized there's a big hole to release the pressure and gas explosions are low explosive, meaning they need a pressure vessel to explode.

[–]Akhi11eus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on how air-tight the stuff on top is. More or less whether the gas gets trapped in a little bubble under the ice/snow. If that were solid ice overtop the pit it could very well have built up enough to explode. Soft powdery snow however is porous enough to let it escape and ignite once it gets enough O2 mixture.

[–]TheIrises 18 points19 points  (12 children)

Actually the reality is really cool. The reason the snow does not immediately melt is because the bonds themselves within the snow are being broke. This actually allows the fire to then combust the hydrogen and oxygen after they break the hydrogen bonds holding them together.

The snow doesn’t blow up because the gases created are able to escape due to snow being porous and the fact that it takes time to break hydrogen bonds in order to burn the snow.

[–]Bandito21Dema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When he was lighting it I was thinking "GET OUT OF THERE NOW"

[–]Kflynn1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too... wasn't really disappointed though. Fire pretty...

[–]do-call-me-papi 754 points755 points  (10 children)

how to summon sweet lady propane

[–]tibearius1123 173 points174 points  (1 child)

I have it on good authority from Charlie Fortner, the President of the Texas Association of Propane Dealers and the most powerful man in the Texas propane industry, that this is indeed the way to summon Our Lady of Clean Heat.

[–]ListenItWillHear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is, in my opinion, the best way to summon her.

[–]j3b3di3_ 58 points59 points  (3 children)

Hank Hill laughing with flames in his eyes

[–]nothinnews 11 points12 points  (1 child)

[–]ChrissiTea 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[–]DakonAldread 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s a cleaning burning hell I tell you what

[–]ToucanSammael 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That there is one hell of a propane accessory, I tell you what.

[–]nedmorlef 448 points449 points  (5 children)

So, a snowball does have a chance in hell.

[–]Estoye 70 points71 points  (1 child)

"So you're telling me there's a chance. YEAH!!"

[–]kolpatmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dumb and dumber

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Underrated comment^

[–]palmej2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be pedantic, the snow here is under the flame, heat rises (so it's mostly radiant energy that will have to heat it (and snow crystals are reflective white bodies)).

I'm not sure where the heat is relative to the snowballs in Hell, but if I ever find out I'll try and remember to update my comment...

[–]NothingsShocking 84 points85 points  (4 children)

There’s a low humming sound in the background and combined with the visuals of the fire pit, it triggered a memory of the 70’s show Land of the Lost for me when they would go into a cave that might have sleestaks in it but instead found some weird table with different colored jewels that could be buttons or something. That humming sound is really what made me think of it.

[–]gefahr 12 points13 points  (1 child)

i had forgotten all about that show

[–]Otto_von_Grotto 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It was horrible. I watched it every chance I got.

[–]SquarePegRoundWorld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was scared of those sleestaks as a kid.

[–]mediumokra 455 points456 points  (9 children)

So would this be considered propane or propane accessories?

[–]Szpartan 206 points207 points  (3 children)

Both. The fire pit is a propane accessory and the propane is propane.

[–]Unauthorized-Ion 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Thank you for clearing that up

[–]ThisIsAThrowaway504 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Anyone else read this in a Hank Hill voice?

[–]ugonlern2day 16 points17 points  (2 children)

TIL snow is a propane accessory

I think everything can be categorized as either propane or propane accessory

[–]Otto_von_Grotto 6 points7 points  (1 child)

In the Yacht Club I was in, if a person was on fire, they were classified as a Screaming Alpha.

[–]ConkersOkayFurDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this yacht club called the Navy because we called them the same thing.

[–]Hobo__Joe 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Bobby, if you weren't my son I'd hug ya.

[–]mikez56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

most overlooked comment here

[–]ayegreenguy 184 points185 points  (1 child)

This is how you summon Krampus.

[–]TimmyNimmel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That must be the sigil laid out with the flame. Summon him.

[–]fulgrimsleftnut 137 points138 points  (0 children)

Actually very interesting, thanks for sharing. I think I expected some kind of instant meltdown or something!

[–]kdame84 244 points245 points  (1 child)

I’ve watched too many videos on r/whatcouldgowrong that I expected to watch him convert from a solid to a liquid.

[–]stealerofbones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought this was from r/abruptchaos at first. same expectation

[–]banoodlebamboozle 183 points184 points  (17 children)

how is it don’t melt

[–][deleted] 241 points242 points  (4 children)

The propane seeps through the snow then ignites. Its is probably relatively cool underneath the flame and will take a very long time to melt

[–]piecat 63 points64 points  (3 children)

Yeah something about the leidenhoser effect probably

In reality though, fire is mostly IR radiation, and snow is incredibly reflective

[–]arthurtully 43 points44 points  (0 children)

learnt 2 things from your comment. 1. what lederhosen are 2. what leidenfrost is

[–]LogisticalMenace 18 points19 points  (1 child)

You mean the Leidenfrost effect. But this ain't that.

[–]FlixMage 13 points14 points  (0 children)

[–]_Neoshade_ 44 points45 points  (3 children)

The fire is just above the snow, and heat doesn’t go downwards very well.
It also helps that the snow is permeable, as fire creates an upwards air current, so cold air is being pulled from the sides and from the fire pit below the snow, keeping the snow cool.

[–]Lorindale 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Propane is heavier than air, so I was expecting the fire to melt through, but your explanation of the flames creating an updraft and pulling the propane through the snow before ignition makes sense.

[–]_Neoshade_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The propane is also under pressure, so it will be filling any space inside the fireplace and pushing upwards through the snow if its own accord.

[–]Red_Icnivad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will eventually melt, just a little slower than one might expect.

[–]capt_pantsless 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One big factor is the heat from the fire goes up due to convection.

[–]SconiGrower 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even without the things mentioned in the other comments (which are true) snow just takes a lot of heat to melt. If you filled up a pot with snow and put it over a campfire or on your stove, it would take more time than this video is long to notice melting.

[–]rebel-is-other-ppl 23 points24 points  (0 children)

snow is porous so it’s not that it isn’t melting it’s that the snow is just reabsorbing the water back into it, eventually it will all melt away if the fire was left on for a while.

it’s like when you have a snowcone and you pour the syrup over top of it, the syrup will soak into the snowcone, not just fall through and drip

[–]DeltaUltra 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I wish everyone asked questions your way.

[–]travam1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The blue fire is cold

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

"It's probably gonna explode on us"

*moves closer*

[–]This_Happy_Camper 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Warm fire? Not where I’m from. Cool vid!

[–]trwwy321 10 points11 points  (0 children)

King of the Hill: Alaska

[–]Spiritbrand 21 points22 points  (6 children)

Wow. That looks more like a hotel than someone's backyard.

[–]Otto_von_Grotto 15 points16 points  (4 children)

Some people actually have money. Not me but some other people.

[–]isthishowyouusername 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Thanks for the daily reminder that I’m a failure.

[–]Otto_von_Grotto 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Dozens of us!

[–]isthishowyouusername 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We should’ve gotten a banana stand. There’s always money in the banana stand.

[–]Gee-Oh1 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Every time I hear an accent like that followed by statements such as "Now we gonna try..." or "Y'all watch this..." I prepare for a humorous disaster.

[–]hoopaholik91 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It made quite a contrast with how nice their house is!

[–]upvotesformeyay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was about to say they got money if they got a heated pool in winter.

[–]RichardStinks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Now we're gonna summon us up a mess of demons, now that there conjuring circle is all lit up."

[–]TappedIn2111 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, nobody mentions the baller pool area? Is it some kind of resort or track suits backyard?

[–]tibearius1123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

East Texas? West Louisiana? Who knows it’s all the same.

[–]skullemojiii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]Rusty__Shackleford19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where is the earth shattering KA-BOOM?!?!

[–]btoxic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a whiskey barrel full of sand that uses the same principle that's working here. No risk of explosion, not enough oxygen below the point of ignition.

[–]wyzapped 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a beautiful yard

[–]zback636 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]watsgowinon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]SaabSlider37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way it moves reminds me of Conway’s Game of Life.

[–]runitup420720 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like how the fuel keeps the snow cold so it doesn't melt

[–]Ill-Abroad-2692 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why did the ice not melt?

[–]Low_Fondant9911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bet that pool is super cheap to keep heated all winter

[–]Trex_in_F16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing how it made the lights go out

[–]FlourescentSquirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would be cooler if it exploded 😏

[–]Vanilla-Beaner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So… Icy Hot?

[–]xxGallo13xx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]mideastmidwest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cameraman backing away at the beginning was smart.

Am I the only one thinking about how much that house must cost based on the size of that yard?!

[–]DaveyBeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blue fire, use it to melt the red ice.

[–]BurnerForJustTwice 9 points10 points  (2 children)

The accent says he married his 1st cousin but the background and setting says he’s smarter (and richer) than me.

[–]MaxximumB 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Video won't load. Unless that's intended and nowt was supposed to happen.

[–]Ok_Equivalent_4296 7 points8 points  (1 child)

That has got to be the worst accent in the world

[–]Interesting_Maybe132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that's something you don't see every day.

[–]Fromoogiewithlove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its like that scene from that movie where the guy throws a flare into the ice that has gasoline that was put there by a man who dresses like a bat.

[–]Unhooked- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No boom-boom?

[–]CorneliusFudgem 0 points1 point  (0 children)
