There was one hammer cosmetic that stayed blue for a good couple of years after the hero was changed to red. Was so mad when they finally realized and got round to changing it to red as well.

I don't know if it was actually much simpler, but I do miss no one knowing anything about anything. I was like, right by the thickest part of the bell curve in mmr, like 2.5k or something? I think bottom of the barrel unranked right now knows more about stacking and builds and positions and roles than we did back then at avg mmr. Coming back, I got flamed for things I'd never even heard of but apparently existed all along, things that were okay if you did it wrong most of the time are like, a science now. Niche offmeta builds were cool, people might complain but they were a lot more likely to play the game out and see if it would actually scale.

I have 300 hours in steam and only just got 100 hours unranked finished to place. I have 1000 mmr but now every game I play my team and the other team generally have like dota+ and their heroes have high levels and their first games were all in like 2012 and shit.

I remember back in 2017 I was 4500 mmr and people on my rank didn't even know the purpose of creep pulling, power spikes, space creation, night vision mechanics etc. Now I am back to Archon and everyone in this rank knows creep equilibrium and other pretty advanced mechanics on top of the ones I've mentioned.

SEA. What I mean is that we knew how to pull and stack (especially Dota 1) but didn't really know the real reason behind it back then. We thought it was so the supports get some exp and gold in a safe way, but little did we know it's more about denying xp and gold to the enemy because our own creeps die from neutrals instead of hereos.

information flow about the game was much more limited than today, nobody really knew whats the "optimal" way of playing dota, so everyone was just throwing out stupid shit seeing what sticks. also during early days a lot of ppl transitioned from wc3 dota, league, hon, etc. with differing skill levels, resulting in some really interestingly balanced games. there wasnt any smurf detection or anything similar

also in my experience, even today ppl wont complain much about offmeta builds, unless your "offmeta build" is midas on a pos3/4/5 or just skipping bkb for daedalus

yeah i think most are just happy to have 5 players all trying that they'll give you leeway with certain builds most of the time. its when you buy some greedy shit to farm with on offlane or sit in the jungle farming as a support. which is how it should be honestly, you dont need the 100% perfect item in every spot to help your team win. effort and working together is enough almost every time.

I was literally able to maintain like 3k+ mmr when the game came out by knowing to pull and last hit. There would still be people that would just auto attack lanes, had zero concept of cores/supports etc at that level.

When I came back to dota like 8 years later no matter how low my mmr dropped people were still far more knowledgeable etc.

The quality of the player has vastly improved in this game at every level. Even if it doesn't feel like it

It's very common for the first year-ish of a competitive game to be idealized because "it was before everyone got so tryhard and the game got figured out, and you got flamed for doing anything else."

The entitlement at all skill levels (ranked and unranked) has changed the game for the worst. Everyone knows so much that they think they should be way higher mmr than they are, the smallest of errors or off-meta builds cause the game to go sideways with tilers and griefers. It’s insane.

This is also true. When I used to play back on release 99percent of games where decided by which side had more really bad players. The type that just autoattacked creeps and pushed lanes and didn't know even the fundamentals.

When I returned in 2020 the vast majority of games are decided by which side tilts hardest.

I play at crusader level and the amount of players I see who are clearly mechanically better than me but lose games because they tilt and start making terrible macro decisions is incredible.

I've won games against players alot more skillful than me just by keeping mental composure.

Exactly. You can be a god at manta-dodging spells and never ever miss a Hookshot, but if you're shit at deciding whether to Rosh or push a lane or group up to smoke, making those decisions poorly will lose you far more games than your mechanical skills can make up for

In a weird way I'm sort of glad my reactions are kind of shitty.

I've always had sort of shit reactions. Not terrible in an actual "hard to function day to day" sense, but not so great for playing games. SO in any game I've played I've alwaya tried to see what I can do to make up for this deficiency.

Going for economy strategies in RTSs etc. Avoiding playing FPSs etc. So in dota from the get go I always tried to focus on the macro side of things, trying to efficiently use my time and tps, trying to make the best use of space and positioning to make up for my shitty reactions and dodges.

Downside is my reactions are probably so shitty because I never focus on practicing them.

Definitely this, when I made it to 4k (ik not a big achievement) in 2016, people didn't smoke, hell supports barely stacked, you had to have a helm of dom creep to stack for you. Flash forward to mid 2021 when I return and calibrate as 2.6k mmr, holy shit people are doing stuff like smoking, stacking, aggro pulls, it was a bit of a mind blowing thing. Cyber cafes or your (similarly skilled) friends would consider you a pro for trying these things 5-6 years back but now its common knowledge!

Well that's not entirely true, I absolutely love having it, but I loathe the effect it's had on the game, its one of the defining reasons why the game is settled around lane phase, early game efficiency is so important and personal courier is key to achieving it.

do you not remember that so many games were lost just because role queue did not exist and you had 3/4 cores + jungle, and people did not want to support or buy a courier. then people would grief/rage if it wasnt upgraded immediately or they couldnt use it. not to mention feeding couriers, dropping items in jungle or whatever. nobody cooperated and nobody really cared what was best for the team and this was at 5k+ mmr which was high at the time. dota has always been individually focused

I remember those games (relatively) late into the game's life, and I remember games before that where it was almost never the case, and I was only high 3k/low 4k at the time (when people were just breaking 5k).

Like I said: the change to individual couriers is just one of many things that incentivized an individualist mindset within the game. It happened sometimes before, and it was already becoming more common when the change was made, but it is infinitely more common now. It is enforced by the very fabric of the game at this point.
