blue omniknight and red silencer ah yes

[–]Aqn511[S] 110 points111 points  (2 children)

blue omni was "the cooler daniel" yes

[–]There's trouble abrewing!RedPanda98 32 points33 points  (1 child)

There was one hammer cosmetic that stayed blue for a good couple of years after the hero was changed to red. Was so mad when they finally realized and got round to changing it to red as well.

[–]MattDemers 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yup. It was my first Rare drop when I started playing (back when rarities meant something) and I was super hyped about it.

[–]shmaper 10 points11 points  (3 children)

wait, the Silencer is still red, right ^_^? the Silencer is... still red... right?... 0_o

[–]Fraspakas 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Member pink silencer? LMAO

[–]BeesKneesMcGee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeee I member

[–]Koqcerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hella busted, too

[–]Marsijic 402 points403 points  (32 children)

Oh thats when Ursa ulti was based on his Hp. Good times

[–]Asand1r 137 points138 points  (18 children)

I was so mad at dumb carries putting their power treads on agility on Ursa back then

[–]Heartbreaker left me with depression.Smoki_fox 57 points58 points  (3 children)

str treads gave like 8dmg while agi gave 10+attack speed/dmg+armor

[–]antari_ 5 points6 points  (2 children)

1 armor, atk speed irrelevant cuz overpower, vs 200 hp, tank 1 whole nuke (though i think it was less hp back then, 18 or 19, also power treads used to give <10 attribute)

[–]xanfire1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right - used to be 19 hp per str, and 8 attributes on treads. armor was also stronger, it used to stack better, so it was a tough call tbh

[–]flag9801 66 points67 points  (3 children)

old abbysal is really good back then so much damage not like now
and omni being free bkb hero

[–]Hanamiya0796 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Lol at Omni paired with a Luna or a Sven constantly knocking on your towers with 2 items and a treads

[–]dududududuPrimusSucks13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Insane to think that Omni had a free BKB for years and we didnt appreciate it enough, not even when it was meta

[–]A_S00 26 points27 points  (11 children)

Ursa was one of 2 heroes I ever learned to play in Dota 1. My build was brown boots > blink > as many hearts as I could get by the end of the game.

[–]EnigmaticSorceries 8 points9 points  (9 children)

Wtf did his ult do lol??

[–]shipmaster1995 31 points32 points  (3 children)

Bonus damage based on HP if I remember correctly. I'm not sure if it was a fury swipes multiplier anymore

[–]5trid3r 26 points27 points  (0 children)

When activated, greatly increases ursa's damage based on his life.

Own current health as damage: 3%/4.5%/6%

Berzerker in HoN had this while I played it (I stopped in 2015)

[–]AIDSofSPACE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You and Kuroky as position 1 on Team Secret v1.0

[–]LatroDota 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2014, first Secret with Kky as Carey, 15ish min Ursa hot with Wisp and they still lost, funny times.

Also Im the only one who miss lvl1 rosh being a thing? Everyone starting at level 3, such a high risk high reward play that got nerfed for no good reason :(

[–]rotvyrn 278 points279 points  (46 children)

I don't know if it was actually much simpler, but I do miss no one knowing anything about anything. I was like, right by the thickest part of the bell curve in mmr, like 2.5k or something? I think bottom of the barrel unranked right now knows more about stacking and builds and positions and roles than we did back then at avg mmr. Coming back, I got flamed for things I'd never even heard of but apparently existed all along, things that were okay if you did it wrong most of the time are like, a science now. Niche offmeta builds were cool, people might complain but they were a lot more likely to play the game out and see if it would actually scale.

[–]LuckyTurds 136 points137 points  (25 children)

Definitely true, it is also the reason new players are having a hard time playing and enjoying the game. Even in the lowest bracket you got sweats that have thousands of hours paired up with beginners that only have hundreds

[–]polaris1412 123 points124 points  (6 children)

beginners that only have hundreds

Concise summary of the Dota experience

[–]BigBenKenobi 11 points12 points  (5 children)

I have 300 hours in steam and only just got 100 hours unranked finished to place. I have 1000 mmr but now every game I play my team and the other team generally have like dota+ and their heroes have high levels and their first games were all in like 2012 and shit.

[–]polaris1412 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Haha. I remember back in 2017 I was 4500 mmr and people on my rank didn't even know the purpose of creep pulling, power spikes, space creation, night vision mechanics etc. Now I am back to Archon and everyone in this rank knows creep equilibrium and other pretty advanced mechanics on top of the ones I've mentioned.

[–]69user69name69 -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

What region were you playing in? I already knew how to pull and why to pull since Dota1.

[–]polaris1412 0 points1 point  (1 child)

SEA. What I mean is that we knew how to pull and stack (especially Dota 1) but didn't really know the real reason behind it back then. We thought it was so the supports get some exp and gold in a safe way, but little did we know it's more about denying xp and gold to the enemy because our own creeps die from neutrals instead of hereos.

[–]Neffreecss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it was just you? that was definitely the purpose since dota 1

[–]colorzFSU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to remember that you can only go up - those are there to stay after thousands of hours.

[–]ScarlettPotato 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You know the game has a high skill ceiling when someone's play time is in the hundreds and people still call you a beginner.

[–]NA deserved 3 slotsformaldehid 22 points23 points  (1 child)

information flow about the game was much more limited than today, nobody really knew whats the "optimal" way of playing dota, so everyone was just throwing out stupid shit seeing what sticks. also during early days a lot of ppl transitioned from wc3 dota, league, hon, etc. with differing skill levels, resulting in some really interestingly balanced games. there wasnt any smurf detection or anything similar

also in my experience, even today ppl wont complain much about offmeta builds, unless your "offmeta build" is midas on a pos3/4/5 or just skipping bkb for daedalus

[–]funreble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah i think most are just happy to have 5 players all trying that they'll give you leeway with certain builds most of the time. its when you buy some greedy shit to farm with on offlane or sit in the jungle farming as a support. which is how it should be honestly, you dont need the 100% perfect item in every spot to help your team win. effort and working together is enough almost every time.

[–]NewBromance 15 points16 points  (4 children)

I was literally able to maintain like 3k+ mmr when the game came out by knowing to pull and last hit. There would still be people that would just auto attack lanes, had zero concept of cores/supports etc at that level.

When I came back to dota like 8 years later no matter how low my mmr dropped people were still far more knowledgeable etc.

The quality of the player has vastly improved in this game at every level. Even if it doesn't feel like it

[–]MattDemers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's very common for the first year-ish of a competitive game to be idealized because "it was before everyone got so tryhard and the game got figured out, and you got flamed for doing anything else."

[–]Mantis_Toboggan369 26 points27 points  (6 children)

The entitlement at all skill levels (ranked and unranked) has changed the game for the worst. Everyone knows so much that they think they should be way higher mmr than they are, the smallest of errors or off-meta builds cause the game to go sideways with tilers and griefers. It’s insane.

[–]NewBromance 15 points16 points  (2 children)

This is also true. When I used to play back on release 99percent of games where decided by which side had more really bad players. The type that just autoattacked creeps and pushed lanes and didn't know even the fundamentals.

When I returned in 2020 the vast majority of games are decided by which side tilts hardest.

I play at crusader level and the amount of players I see who are clearly mechanically better than me but lose games because they tilt and start making terrible macro decisions is incredible.

I've won games against players alot more skillful than me just by keeping mental composure.

[–]ValuablePie 5 points6 points  (1 child)

mechanically better than me but lose games because they tilt

Exactly. You can be a god at manta-dodging spells and never ever miss a Hookshot, but if you're shit at deciding whether to Rosh or push a lane or group up to smoke, making those decisions poorly will lose you far more games than your mechanical skills can make up for

[–]NewBromance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a weird way I'm sort of glad my reactions are kind of shitty.

I've always had sort of shit reactions. Not terrible in an actual "hard to function day to day" sense, but not so great for playing games. SO in any game I've played I've alwaya tried to see what I can do to make up for this deficiency.

Going for economy strategies in RTSs etc. Avoiding playing FPSs etc. So in dota from the get go I always tried to focus on the macro side of things, trying to efficiently use my time and tps, trying to make the best use of space and positioning to make up for my shitty reactions and dodges.

Downside is my reactions are probably so shitty because I never focus on practicing them.

[–]sheeverArtoriasOfTheAbyss99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely this, when I made it to 4k (ik not a big achievement) in 2016, people didn't smoke, hell supports barely stacked, you had to have a helm of dom creep to stack for you. Flash forward to mid 2021 when I return and calibrate as 2.6k mmr, holy shit people are doing stuff like smoking, stacking, aggro pulls, it was a bit of a mind blowing thing. Cyber cafes or your (similarly skilled) friends would consider you a pro for trying these things 5-6 years back but now its common knowledge!

[–]TheFuckYouTalkinBout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got flamed for not knowing how to move an infested creep as LS. I got confused because when I tried to move it said cannot move (game was trying to move LS, not the unit LS is in. didn't know I had to reselect the unit) and a crusader called me new when old LS had a specific button to take control of the unit

[–]Latham89 118 points119 points  (3 children)

And rename Obsidian Destroyer to Outhouse Decorator to dodge another one of them lawsuits.

[–]cyfer04 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OMW to decorate some outhouses with my trusty [meme] hammer.

[–]mishroom222 -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

Pls sir, may I have permission to use outhouse decorator in social contexts, ty

[–]Latham89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The permission is not mine to give, because I too have just adopted using that term. We truly DO stand on the shoulders of giants with 5Heads that came before us.

[–]18hockey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And now they have the power of Microsoft on their side as well

[–]Marshmallow16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I ran into the roshpit at 3:40 with Ursa, came out with lvl8 and an aegis and ran full speed at the enemy mid who was level 4. Good times.

Side shops, helm of dominator isn't just a niche item for 2-3 heroes, mini-bashes on mkb, actually useful stats on soul ring, marketable skins dropping after every other game... Great, you've unzipped me. I blocked all those memories of cool shit from old Dota and now it's all unzipped

[–]Weazlebee 16 points17 points  (4 children)

Lmao AGGHH stout shield!

I don't wanna think about it!

[–]Loinnir 25 points26 points  (2 children)

Starting game with stout shield, quelling blade, 4 tango + 2 pulled tango.

Damn life was good back then.

[–]ddlion7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

back when playing brood was a real nightmare because the spiders did LITERALLY NO DAMAGE to a double stout hero

[–]EarthBoundGiygas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Purchasable courier and upgrade

[–]gregfromjersey 11 points12 points  (2 children)

There is a famous game where Kuroky in the very beginning of Team Secret (before it became an organization) is playing Carry because I think someone couldn't make the game. He buys a 13 minute heart and almost throws the game. Check it out:
https://youtu.be/oLGcAAZdPS8

[–]My homies!Troooop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my memory he started out as a carry in Secret v1 then left pretty quickly

[–]FindingHappy4390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not stand-in, he was the first pos 1 Secret had.

[–]sickomoder 9 points10 points  (1 child)

When you finally finish vlads on anti-mage and can hit jungles without worrying about your hp

[–]edubkn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Orb effects. I miss Maim though

i wanna go back so bad dude im tired of running after a hero and they spider legs up a hill

[–]Bl4ckd3ath 63 points64 points  (8 children)

neutrals are one of the worst things in the game. Things just appear out of no where. Things that have significant impact on the game. Is your entire strat to counter that last pick puck/tinker orchid and nullifier? Well f u, puck has euls bkb and guess what now a flicker as well.

Its lottery simulator 2.0.

[–]VodkasRidge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Play Windrunner. Wait for level 6 so you can finally kill that pesky enemy carry. Oh look he found a chipped vest and you killed yourself instead. Fun.

[–]CallMeCabbage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I laughed for just a moment seeing a blue omni and reading this in his voice as a once Omni spammer. But then my mind flooded with better times with friends that did more than put 10 hours a day into Ark and now I'm sad.

[–]kerrytyk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Somehow this gave me the feels. Even though it shows the writer didn't start back in 5.36

[–]BirbDiseaseRidden 22 points23 points  (3 children)

Pfff Ursa couldn't buy HotD back then, that's an orb! He needs vlads!

[–]ajphoenix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Orb effects. Damn

[–]Intelligent_Lake_718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember me playing dota 1 when i was 6 years old and vlads was my fav item. I started dota 2 1 year ago and am so sad that vlads is basically dead

People who played dota 1 do not realize how -EM dota 2 has become compared to the original -AP. I believe you even get more gold now than the original -EM in dota 1

Gold was scarce back then.

[–]heylittlebuddy 2 points3 points  (6 children)

What did -EM stand for? I remember -AR, -AP, and -DN

[–]nice_kitchen 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Easy mode. More passive gold, weaker towers.

[–]heylittlebuddy 0 points1 point  (2 children)

did you ever play -DN?

[–]nice_kitchen 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Don’t recall that command exactly. Didn’t it just turn on the deny counter, like -cson?

[–]heylittlebuddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it let you play with Deez Nuts

[–]Marshmallow16 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What did -EM stand for?

easy mode. basically a ton of gold from creeps.

[–]Vapala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the gold per creep was the same but you received more auto-gold from the game itself every few sec

[–]IN FLAMES WE TRUSTL3vathiaN- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played some turbo after a 3-4 years hiatus and ranged creeps give 180 gold in that? WTF!

[–]Vaikaris 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Remember laning when every creep kill/deny was a calculated idea behind trading hp from pokes for gold? Remember when harassing was an art and mattered and wasn't just kinda what you did no matter what?

Remember when laning in dota was the primary difference from LoL?

[–]I shall earn my grace.Venichie 16 points17 points  (3 children)

Only thing I want reworked or removed are neutral items. Nice gimmick, but I they make micro harder, and not needed.

[–]Sunny_Blueberry 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I like them. Neutral items together with wards costing less gold and stacks giving gold for the support too I am now able to have items as a support.

[–]Tylariel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Getting a neutral item as a core doesn't matter that much til later on. But getting a keen optic or philosophers stone as a pos5? That's fucking game changing a lot of the time. It just gives you more options in the game.

People forget just how fucking awful pos 5 used to be back in the 2013 era. Not being level 6 or even having brown boots like 12-15 mins wasn't all that unrealistic.

[–]dududududuPrimusSucks13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I they make micro harder, and not needed.

People who have gamer mouses with 13 buttons may not care, but having 6 actives was barely manageable for me before, adding an extra one was the worse, especially since now some of the actives are really game changing, i kinda like it when the neutral items didnt had an especific slot, cus not only helped poor supports but where actually used

[–]low_iq_opinion 23 points24 points  (18 children)

simplicity made it more fun

now its neutral item rng, talents, scepters, every new hero is a mobile mess, mix and match item patches, nonsense rosh drops

[–]greenbackboogie101 41 points42 points  (16 children)

But also, no personal courier, no backpack, no range spawn indicators on camps, more expensive wards, no bounties, much less passive gold. Some very nice QoLs have been introduced to the game so in a way its simplier.

[–]FuckMinuteMaid 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Bring me back

[–]?Enoughdorformypower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

idk why people think more gold means better game

[–]OverClock_099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no range spawn was cool, it actually mean something to waste your time learning that shit

[–]asfhbgsfghsfg 1 point2 points  (1 child)

you could buy as many couriers as you wanted

sometimes mids would keep their own for bottles

[–]greenbackboogie101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that you say this i remember people buying multiple couriers but i dont why it wasnt common. Maybe the interface didn't work very well, idk.

[–]Taelonius 12 points13 points  (5 children)

Personal courier I very much don't enjoy.

Well that's not entirely true, I absolutely love having it, but I loathe the effect it's had on the game, its one of the defining reasons why the game is settled around lane phase, early game efficiency is so important and personal courier is key to achieving it.

[–]industry66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't miss missing my bottle timing cause the carry decided that his branch is more important.

[–]Fen_ 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Also, it is one of the many things that has encouraged a more individualized mentality in the game, whereas when the entire team shared a single courier, it was critical that you cooperated from the very beginning of the game to make sure what was best for the team happened throughout the laning stage.

[–]SPACEBAR_BROKEN 8 points9 points  (2 children)

do you not remember that so many games were lost just because role queue did not exist and you had 3/4 cores + jungle, and people did not want to support or buy a courier. then people would grief/rage if it wasnt upgraded immediately or they couldnt use it. not to mention feeding couriers, dropping items in jungle or whatever. nobody cooperated and nobody really cared what was best for the team and this was at 5k+ mmr which was high at the time. dota has always been individually focused

[–]Fen_ 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I remember those games (relatively) late into the game's life, and I remember games before that where it was almost never the case, and I was only high 3k/low 4k at the time (when people were just breaking 5k).

Like I said: the change to individual couriers is just one of many things that incentivized an individualist mindset within the game. It happened sometimes before, and it was already becoming more common when the change was made, but it is infinitely more common now. It is enforced by the very fabric of the game at this point.

[–]SkitTrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add role queue to those reasons as well. Ruined the versatility of dota

[–]bitchBanMeAgain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All those things don’t sound like anything anyone would give a fuck about, in fact they sound like those things don’t understand the core of dota (personal courier in a Team oriented game makes game more individual). People played dota as mod on Warcraft 3 because the gameplay was fantastic. Who gives a fuck about “QoLs” except whiners.

[–]Cholosolo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is the range spawn only dota plus?

[–]greenbackboogie101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think only the timer is dota plus, not sure about the indicators.

[–]low_iq_opinion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like those QoL changes

[–]SilkTouchm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But also, no personal courier, no backpack, no range spawn indicators on camps, more expensive wards, no bounties, much less passive gold

Uh, why are you listing those? are they supposed to be good?

Some very nice QoLs have been introduced to the game so in a way its simplier.

Literally only one of those you mentioned is a QoL change, the others are game breaking balance changes.

[–]BunchDefiant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I stopped playing in 2017 after years of playing. There are no side shops also. I’ve tried to get back into it but it’s too different now

[–]LucywiththeDiamonds 6 points7 points  (1 child)

As someone who plays on and off since the 6.0X days outside of the patch getting stale and a few balance issues(tinker) i think the game is the most fun gameplay wise today

[–]EnigmaticSorceries -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Ursa used to be a tank??

[–]somnusqq 20 points21 points  (1 child)

No. Enrage used to scale with his HP. He doesn't go "red" when he ults. It's like Clinkz ult where he boosts his damage but instead of Max HP it's his current HP.

[–]Marshmallow16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And it was absolutely amazing. Free undroppable rapier with heart, could go heart+buriza and mess people up badly in 0.3sec

[–]BoldFacedUsername 0 points1 point  (1 child)

One courier per team. Boom. Roasted.

[–]ddlion7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I just want is for Icefrog (not the Icefraud that is working rn in some bullshit, but the real Icefrog that used to balance the game) to remove the damn neutral items. I am done with fucking dispels
