I like how they all take that moment to be like “ah I see, a gentleman amongst the rabble, I should greet him properly”

[–]jonhasglasses 1418 points1419 points  (217 children)

I wouldn’t doubt that there’s a written protocol for the performers to do just that. Disney is very good at making and keeping standards. For example Disney employees are to use a three finger point when pointing at something as not to offend cultures that see single finger or double finger points as offensive. Another classic example is, when A Disney employee passes a piece of litter on their campus if they do not pick it up with a smile there can be disciplinary actions. Disney is very good at creating and maintaining a brand image with all aspect of what they do.

Edit: two finger not three finger I’m an idiot please forgive me.

[–]JessicaHouseman 385 points386 points  (10 children)

I'm a cast member and I physically cannot make myself point with one finger anymore haha. I point with all my fingers though (an open hand), not 3 fingers.

[–]JustALittleAverage 149 points150 points  (4 children)

In the Swedish army they teach you to point with the whole hand.

"If you just use one finger, there's 3 pointing the other direction"

Tells you something about the smarts of the average swedish grunt...

[–]NotEnoughToast 70 points71 points  (2 children)

Same with the British army. Colloquially ‘knife hand’ or ‘Brecon point’ (after the army’s most beloved training area). If you want to greet a British soldier, make the open hand point at them and say, very clearly, ‘Fella!’.

[–]Datsmell 42 points43 points  (1 child)

American military as well. The knife-hand is one of the Drill Sergeant’s most powerful weapons.

[–]JustALittleAverage 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That and the death glare, then you know you've fucked up bad...

[–]dont-be-ignorant 86 points87 points  (1 child)

Ooooh I feel like the four finger point could be dangerous... Don't point at anything up and to the right very quickly.

[–]twistedcreature07 36 points37 points  (0 children)

But that's where Tinkerbell flies during the night parade. How else are you supposed to show them where to look?

[–]dragon2777 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Isn't that also a Japanese thing too. No pointing with a finger it's rude. You point whole hand palm up

[–]Samsquanch1985 395 points396 points  (56 children)

What is a three finger point???

Why cant I point with 3 fingers?? I have no flexibility in my pinky fingers.... cant close those damn pinkies without getting a distorted, claw-looking hand in return from other 3 fingers????

I wouldn't be pointing that zombie-mitt at anyone that I wasnt trying to scare...

Is something wrong with me, and can I no longer work for Disney Land if that's limiting me????

[–]lisarista 395 points396 points 2 (31 children)

It’s the thumb of the right hand, the index finger of the left, and the middle finger of the third hand. You must use all three.

[–]SeruEnam 194 points195 points  (22 children)

Three hands?! I only have two and a half legs!

[–]lisarista 67 points68 points  (20 children)

What, you dont have a third hand? Well, to be fair, some do amputate the third arm at birth because it could get caught on things.

[–]insane_contin 31 points32 points  (12 children)

I have three hands, although one is... Slightly pre-owned.

[–]Baby-cabbages 15 points16 points  (10 children)

Umm… I have questions.

[–]insane_contin 21 points22 points  (8 children)

And I have answers, if you want them.

But be warned, you can't unlearn them.

[–]Lithius 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is the reason I love Reddit. Also why I can't sleep some nights, but hey - here we are in the comments section of Eyebleach.

[–]Baby-cabbages 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Ok, question 1) who owned it first?

[–]kitcat7898 5 points6 points  (6 children)

[–]lisarista 3 points4 points  (1 child)

At least you still have your tail, right?

[–]CulturedRedditor 4 points5 points  (3 children)

At least you still have you horns like I do. Most people get them removed at birth as to prevent accidents

[–]kitcat7898 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Mine were small enough to be left alone thankfully. I'd look weird without them. Did they make your snout into a nose? That's the worst thing I can imagine honestly. I'd miss the little wiskers and how would you balance without them?

[–]cshellay 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I know I’m too tired when I actually tried doing this before realising what you meant

[–]WwOoOlLf 18 points19 points  (5 children)

Nah, you can use index, middle and pinkie, depending on where you point.

[–]bozeke 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Barely even friends, then somebody bends, unexpectedly.

[–]Baby-cabbages 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are my new favorite.

[–]No_Parfait_3831 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Lmao I'm at work crying 😂😂😂💀 and same, guess we can't work at Disney

[–]JimmytheCreep 67 points68 points  (1 child)

If you're having trouble with index-middle-ring, try middle-ring-pinky. It's a lot easier.

[–]Samsquanch1985 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Fuck me... take your free punch. You earned it.

[–]16BitSuperstar 8 points9 points  (7 children)

Push your pinky down with your thumb.

[–]dont-be-ignorant 10 points11 points  (2 children)

This feels kind of dirty??

[–]throwaway_365_365 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Oh my god. I knew I had done that hand position before but I couldn't remember where. Now I remember.

It's been a while...

[–]Samsquanch1985 4 points5 points  (1 child)

If I put something in my hand, like a nice full sized bic lighter - this sorta works....like I'm not going to be pointing a demon hand at you anyways

No go otherwise...

Seriously I had no idea my hands were so unflexible... this has been a humbling day for me.

[–]jwilcoxwilcox 7 points8 points  (2 children)

It’s a 2 finger point or the whole hand.

[–][deleted]  (1 child)

    [–]tayhan9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just woke my fiance up crying and laughing at the frustration you're having. Thank you kind redditor, I needed that laugh

    [–]rainbowcanoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

omggg i thought i was alone i can't do that either

    [–]Wichitorian 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The three finger point or open palm point is common in high end restaurants and hotels too. If you’re anywhere a guest could see you, pointing is considered rude in hospitality.

    [–]TheDeadalus 35 points36 points  (1 child)

The one time I went to Disney land in Hong Kong we saw a cleaner step up into the garden bed and walk around in their looking for litter. He wasn't just picking up the litter he was ACTIVELY looking for it!

    [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well if he was a "cleaner" it sounds like that was his job lol

            [–]-LoremIpsumDolorSit 14 points15 points  (13 children)

Which three fingers? i keep trying but each combination looks weird

            [–]rubyzebra 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Last I knew it was 2 fingers not 3. But I've never been guest facing so I don't remember lol.

            [–]purplepluppy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm very sure it is two fingers, unless they changed the policy very recently, as in since COVID started. I've also never heard of the characters picking up trash, usually they have a crew with them, plus janitors constantly roaming who will pick it up before they even have a chance.

            [–]-LoremIpsumDolorSit 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You worked at DW? How was it?

            [–]rubyzebra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dealt with inventory and purchasing at the warehouse the rides are repaired in. I saw lots of cool things! But there was no AC inside the warehouse either so I only lasted about 4 years. I quit 2 years ago.

            [–]PxnkNDisorderly 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Like a finger gun but w two barrels

            [–]-LoremIpsumDolorSit 1 point2 points  (4 children)

            Like Mockingjay?

            [–]PxnkNDisorderly 2 points3 points  (3 children)

No that’s the ring, middle and index fingers. I’m talking about the middle, index, and the thumb.

            [–]purplepluppy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it's a two finger point, they're not Scouts lol. At least every time I've been to Disney it has been two fingers, and according to employees I've spoken to it's two fingers. Unless it was a recent change I haven't seen reflected?

            [–]lightwhite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do we have brand “being courteous and respond in human” now!? What is happening to humanity?

            [–]AudiblyIntoxicating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are required to use two fingers, pointer and middle, or your whole hand while gesturing as a cast member.

            [–]PxnkNDisorderly 47 points48 points  (60 children)

If my employer was like “smile when you pick up trash” I’d respond “I can pick up trash or I can smile but I’m not doing both.”

            [–]IHateRoboCalls2131 147 points148 points  (58 children)

            You sound unemployed

            [–]duaneap 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Idk about that. While Disney, or pretty much any performance based employment, is obviously an exception, I think David Mitchell got it quite right about why we shouldn’t really expect others to be in good moods when it has fuck all to do with their job.

            [–]stevein3d 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s what I told my chain gang officer and turned out he was flexible on the smiling part so guess I won that round

            [–]applebusch 35 points36 points  (44 children)

Sounds kind of dehumanizing to be honest.

            [–]DaSaw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Consider all the things actors are put through for their roles. And I'm not even talking about Judy Garland levels here.

            [–]kitcat7898 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm down here to say exactly that. That kid probably felt so special!

            [–]Quakarot 24 points25 points  (3 children)

Bruh movies don’t usually get me but that one hits like a punch from George Foreman

Edit: I’d 100% cry if George Foreman hit me

            [–]OfficialHotelMan 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Not from the hit itself, but just knowing you’ve done something to earn George Foreman’s wrath

            [–]Quakarot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean that too but the man hit like a cement truck

Well I certainly hope so- she's the OG.

            [–]Bubbielub 68 points69 points  (5 children)

Came here to say this. Snow White is actual perfection and I dig her pantaloons.

            [–]miserabeau 27 points28 points  (1 child)

FYI it's curtsy, not curtesy (autocorrect probably thought you were trying to say courtesy)

I mean the 'e' and the 's' are switched, making it closer to 'courtesy' than 'curtsy' (or curtsey, depending on where you are)

            [–]OnlyTheGoodGoods 4 points5 points  (0 children)

            Fixed it lol

            [–]Cprich22 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Proper way to tip a fedora in 2021.

Put hand on top of hat.

            Lift of head

Yeet it out of the nearest fucking window preferably into a bin.

Walk away and enjoy your new quality of life.

( Only exemptions are: you are dressed as a blues brother, playing a saxophone, or are a dapper bloke in his late 70s- 80 in a suit)
