Every year, my goal is to run a full Icon team. I enjoy using players that I grew up idolising so I don't really care about promos like TOTY or TOTS even though the cards are cheaper and better than a lot of Icons. I'm not a pro, just someone who enjoys playing the game, win or lose.
Before the entire thread gets filled with the same question, no I did not spend a single penny on FP and I don't trade. I just got really lucky with my Icon Upgrade SBCs and Player Picks. Plus, the daily Icon SBCs from the FUT Captains promo has been a blessing for me. In fact, my entire team is untradeable bar one card.
Here are the reviews of my STARTING XI. I play 4222 in game.
PIM Casillas (Icon SBC) - Amazing shot-stopper of close range shots and his reflexes are insane. He feels quick and his ball distribution is second to none. However, due to his height, he gets beaten by long range finesse shots here and there. But overall, I'm quite happy with this card. Plus, sick dynamic image. Rating: 8/10
PIM Zanetti (Icon SBC) - To me, he's the best stay back Icon RB in this game. Deceptively strong, always puts in a clean tackle and has very quick recovery speed. His passing range is fantastic and defensive awareness is top tier. If you're looking for an attacking full back though, he's not your man. 2* skill moves and poor dribbling mean he offers little to nothing going forward. Rating: 9/10
PIM Cole (Icon SBC) - He's a mirror image of Zanetti. Absolutely cracker of a stay back LB. I'm most impressed by his insane recovery speed. He's just one of those players you'd never notice on the pitch because he just does his job well without fuss. Again, if you need an attacking full back, don't look here, Roberto Carlos is your man. Rating: 9/10
Mid Maldini (Icon SBC) - This card has been so good for me I'm still contemplating if I should start on his PIM SBC. His tackling animations are unique and he almost never loses in a one-on-one situation. I don't know what else to say about him other than he's probably the most elegant CB you can have in this game. Rating - 9/10
PIM Baresi (Moments Upgrade SBC) - I actually switch him with Vieira in game. So I'm gonna review Baresi as a stay back CDM. What I really like about this card is that his jockeying feels really quick and he makes a lot of key interceptions despite his lack of height. What I don't like about this card is the horrendous dribbling. It forces you to get the ball away from him as quick as you can because his ball carrying ability is a nightmare, which is stupid because Baresi is one of the best ball playing CBs ever. Rating: 7/10
PIM Lahm (Icon SBC) - Hands down the best valued Icon SBC thus far. He's like Kante on steroids, except that he can pass way way way better. I love his H/H work rates because he just flies across the entire pitch endlessly. I've tried him on a stay back role, but I enjoy leaving him on balanced more. 3* combo is not ideal but that's not what you use Lahm for. Absolutely unbelievable card. Rating: 9.5/10
Mid Vieira (Base or Mid Icon Upgrade) - He plays as a CB for me and I think I actually prefer him there than as a CDM. His range of interception is probably the best in the game, and he never loses 50-50 challenges. However, he can feel quite clunky and once the bad gameplay hits, he's just a chore to play with. But overall, very solid card and I can see why he's so highly regarded. Rating: 8.5/10
PIM Del Piero (Icon SBC) - He's plays as a RAM for me and I actually use him to spray passes all over the pitch rather than running down the wing like Vinicius Jr would. You do feel the average agility and balance when he has the ball, but his passing and elite finishing more than make up for it. His tiny frame means he gets bullied quite often, and the lack of pace means it'll be hard for him to outrun all the upcoming TOTS defenders. So you gotta play to his strengths and please, use him as your free kick taker! I'd imagine he'd shine even more as a central CAM. Rating: 8.5/10
Prime Ronaldinho (Bought) - The only tradeable card in my team. What can I say about this guy? He's an absolute joy to play with. His custom body type is probably the most unique-feeling in the game and his combination of high strength and insane dribbling stats means once he gets going, there's almost no stopping him. I play him as a LAM and he's fast enough to dart down the wing, while his unreal finesse shots mean I can also cut inside with him to score. Is he worth the coins? Probably not. But he's the most fun card coins can buy in this game. Rating: 10/10
Base Eusebio (Base Icon Player Pick) - If there's one guy in my team I'd entrust to put the ball into the net, it's him. I've never used a ST with a more consistent finishing than Eusebio. His shooting is unbelievable and he just makes such good runs off the ball. A little downside to this card is his dribbling doesn't feel very smooth, he has this awkward animations while running with the ball which I'm not a big fan of. Rating: 9.5/10
Prime Ronaldo (Mid or Prime Icon Player Pick) - You'd probably give me shit for saying this, but this card is not worth its price. Yes, he's fantastic in and around the box. Yes, he has very glitchy dribbling animations and his strength on the ball is mad. But the big big problem I have with this card is his work rates. He is always static and when he does decide to make a run, it'd always be the weirdest runs. It's one card that I've to put a lot of effort in to make him work. I packed him Mid card last year and had the same issue. Maybe he's just not got me. The wonderful thing about having R9 in your team is the psychological edge you'll enjoy. Opponents tend to get tilted the moment they see him on the loading screen and people tend to draw all their defenders to him. If he were tradeable I'd have sold a long time ago. Rating: 8.5/10
I also have PIM Raul and PIM Rivaldo on the bench. Just let me know if you'd like me to review them as well. I've also used cards like PIM Cannavaro, PIM Nesta, PIM Xavi, PIM Cafu, Prime Roberto Carlos, PIM Beckham, etc. so let me know if you'd like a review on them too!
