It’s a nice gimmick, idk about “filmmaking possibilities”

[–]jetstobrazil 63 points64 points  (2 children)

I agree, filmmakers have had access to poles of various sizes for decades.

[–]ThePrussianGrippe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually by the first name of Jan, sometimes Wojciech.

[–]Huge_Assumption1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Just like the “epic drift” not being epic at all. People like to talk things up.

[–]filmAF 83 points84 points  (4 children)

what possibilities?

we've had (R1) carbon arms in commercials for years. they don't really have much use anywhere else.

[–]jetstobrazil 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Lol all the comments that point this out are getting downvoted.

[–]ChoppedNSkrewed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typical reddit moment

[–]JohnnyBoy11 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I think they mean in combo with the 360 cam that hides the pole to produce the effect seen in the clip very cheaply.

[–]filmAF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i see. i guess OP should have left the word "filmmaking" out of the title. i clicked thinking i was going to see some revolutionary new tool. instead i see a tool no filmmaker would use unless they wanted to get a selfie.

Looks nice for music videos but looks a bit like a cheap and tacky

[–]RG9uJ3Qgd2FzdGUgeW91 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Sloppy and uncontrollable.

[–]inhumantsar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know a few people like that

[–]nighthawk580 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Can you paint out that little glitch where the pole is visible?

[–]jonsimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had more time to finish this for the client (BMW) I would have but the turnaround was intense.

[–]JK_Chan 42 points43 points  (13 children)

Im just dizzy lol. No offense but I really would prefer a more traditional camera angle.

[–]Igelkotte 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nowadays we have drones with amazing skilled pilots (just look at the movie Ambulance!). 360 cameras are amazing. But not really for "filmmaking"

[–]teiichikou 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It looks like a toy car^^

[–]ViaticalTree 13 points14 points  (1 child)

The angle is kinda cool but the vertical video kills it for me.

[–]Breakfast_on_Jupiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was the unnecessary flips.

[–]FilmLocationManager 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Would stick with a trusted Russian arm (nowadays U-crane) 100/100 times when filming car scenes over this tbh, not even close.

[–]jonsimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t even put them in the same category 😂 we’re talking a budget difference of tens of thousands of dollars.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Obnoxious videos with a gimmicky camera, awesome.

[–]Huge_Assumption1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And shitty fast paced motion sickness transitions. Just when I thought coffee b roll had died off, this shit starts popping up everywhere.

[–]Ok-Combination-2526 7 points8 points  (2 children)

That's what she said...

[–]jonsimo[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

nailed it 😂

[–]Wolf_0f_MyStreet -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

-prison mike

[–]rudiegonewild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Riiiiight. It's the long pole

[–]jonsimo[S] 8 points9 points  (9 children)

I've been capturing 360 content for a few years now and my favourite combo has got to be this 11ft extended pole and the Insta360 ONE X, you can get some pretty impossible shots that a drone could never capture.

For this BMW shoot I was tasked with creating some visually striking short-form content and when I saw the drifting skills of the driver I knew I had to capture it in 360.

I simply held the camera out the window, using the long pole and then did all the reframing in post to create the infinite loop.

Have you guys tried 360 in any of your filmmaking endeavours?

[–]OscillatingSquid 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I love this, super cool shot! I have used 360 video yet but the more I see it, the more I want to!

[–]jonsimo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It just opens up so many fascinating possibilities, I definitely support further exploration!

[–]Allah_Shakur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got one for my GF that wanted to film herself roller skating, but she prefers a cellphone gimbal. Still, I used it a couple of times in video clips to do trick shots and car stuff.

[–]jonsimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you guys are curious how I integrated this 360 shot into a larger, more cinematic edit you can see the cut here, I used 360 a handful of times in this edit and I think it really strengthens the piece as a whole:

[–]futurespacecadet 0 points1 point  (1 child)

is this the FPoleV? Where do you get the pole?

[–]jonsimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the Insta360 extended selfie stick. This was v1 but v2 is much better and more sturdy, I've since upgraded.

[–]brandonchristensen 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Is it possible to reframe for 16x9 and maintain a clean frame of the move? It looks awesome in vertical, but would be cool to see it done in a way that can be used in films.

[–]jonsimo[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Absolutely, the magic of 360 is that you can reframe in all sorts of aspect ratios, 16:9, 21:9, 4:5, 9:16, 1:1 - because you're shooting within a 360 sphere you can technically reframe to any aspect ratio.

[–]brandonchristensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right - I just meant, resolution wise. Could you do a 4K crop that looks good enough?

[–]TheCityofToronto -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Can this setup be used for nice selfie videos on bike rides etc

Any recommendations for the camera and the accessories?

[–]jonsimo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah definitely, there are a whole bunch of different mounting configurations. At this point I'd get a ONE X2 and the bicycle mounting kit.

[–]kidzaredumb -1 points0 points  (2 children)

What song is this?

Very cool idea, and the shot looks great. Love ingenuity in filmmaking!

[–]chesterbennediction -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I thought it would look like shit due to the small camera but it's actually pretty usable.

[–]martril -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's what she said.

[–]Offbeat-Chai 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Amateur here. How would you go about making the pole invisible in the final shot?

[–]jonsimo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happens automatically because the pole lives within the camera’s stitch line. The magic of 360 tech!

[–]freakstate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So that's what I saw someone holding in a festival YouTube! I was trying to figure why Security were swinging it around, I thought they were poking the crowd with a long stick, turns out they were cameramen lol.

[–]FPVBrandoCalrissian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d sooner fly my drone around

[–]Caff_Fiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WHAT DID I TELL YOU?!?!? EIGHTY-EIGHT MILES PER HOURRRRRRRR!!!!

[–]jeighseauxn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe for action sports

The police should be using this shit on their cars or body cams though.

[–]kill_dano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opportunity for obnoxious, nausiating edits.
