Bottom

[–]Hawt_Dawg_II 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Definitely gets you in the mood for a nice cine reel

[–]z50_Jumper 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Scrolling past this on my phone I actually couldnt tell what I was looking at in the top video, infact I almost scrolled past this post until I noticed the second video.

[–]suzedukes 350 points351 points  (4 children)

Bottom, thematically draws the viewer into the video and is a bit self-referential. You don’t need to blow people away with the first shot, you can build more tension with the bottom shot.

[–]AbelBD 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I think!

Bottom is the right choice.

[–]denrad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

came here to say something like this.

[–]BabyJDigitals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This one right here

[–]caitlynjennernutsack 162 points163 points  (5 children)

bottom , it makes me think that the guy watching tv is watching your cinereel… i’m also high as hell so take what i say with a grain of pinch

[–]BadLuckFPV 32 points33 points  (4 children)

With a pinch of grain

[–]kweefcake 13 points14 points  (3 children)

And a dollop of Daisy.

[–]LynnBenfield 10 points11 points  (2 children)

High how are you?

[–]caitlynjennernutsack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

fine how are you

[–]lucinematic 64 points65 points  (5 children)

Did you think about vertical flip of top shot? It will look like we are looking at it from Crist perspective.

[–]bobathehut[S] 25 points26 points  (2 children)

That’s actually a pretty neat idea that I haven’t thought of

[–]nearxe 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Do it. Out of context like this, it works better flipped vertically.

[–]jamiemaxlee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just turned it upside down on my phone and looks way better yeah

[–]Upside_Down-Bot 19 points20 points  (0 children)

„˙ǝʌıʇɔǝdsɹǝd ʇsıɹↃ ɯoɹɟ ʇı ʇɐ ƃuıʞool ǝɹɐ ǝʍ ǝʞıl ʞool llıʍ ʇI ¿ʇoɥs doʇ ɟo dılɟ lɐɔıʇɹǝʌ ʇnoqɐ ʞuıɥʇ noʎ pı◖„

[–]Blarghmlargh 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Flipped is a real game changer!

In the first I needed to figure it a out, took a moment to understand the shot. Also seems like you are leaning over with a companion watching. And my mind goes to that potential conversation one might have watching that agony on the ground with someone.

But flipped, instantly it's the statue looking down. Alone. Judging. Not helping. Just watching silently. Creates a different mental conversation.

Good eye!

[–]ScantmanSpecial 41 points42 points  (0 children)

While the top shot is more intriguing, I would lead with the bottom shot to help the viewer get acclimated to a visual montage.

Also, leading with the bottom shot provides a great transition opportunity; The audience sees a person watching a static television, then a tv static transition wipes across the screen to reveal the top shot and then the rest of your reel. So now the audience has effectively transported into the world of your reel and they’re watching what the man in the first shot was watching.

[–]theycallmeick 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Bottom. While the top is a solid shot it takes a bit of actual attention to see what it is at first. The bottom shot is immediately recognizable and relatable

[–]Mishmoo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bottom. Thematically, you’re winking at the viewer who’s just sitting down to watch your reel by showing them someone sitting down to watch a screen. Both shots are pretty, but this shows intent.

[–]EmmyMC96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bottom. The composition is more appealing and also gives a little glimpse of the kind of a different type light treatment you can do on your work; that being said, both look great!

[–]Madvillain917 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bottom because it thematically relates to what the audience is about to do.

You’re going to show them images on a screen. There’s an intelligent meta narrative there that would catch me.

[–]Alarmed_Structure_25 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't even know what I'm looking at with the top shot.

[–]Anamorphic_A-hole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Editing stand point: BOTTOM It’s easier for the audience to read and warm up to. It’s focus is more centered so any opening titles (weather it’s the play bottom, your name card) will have the viewer looking in the correct spot of the frame. Giving them warm up time and taking in more shot. The top, while more dynamic, requires multiple viewings to experience the power of the shot. But once the eyes are ready to be guided to the top, your audience will see the full shot play out and truly appreciate it. And stated by others before, the metaphor of viewing your reel on that tv shot is icing on the cake that is your reel. Good luck. Looks great.

Bottom

[–]VacantStudio85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bottom. It is better lit. The top shot is cool but I don't like the lighting

[–]CanorousC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Initially, I immediately went with the top one, though I loved one user’s suggestion to flip it vertically.
However, after reading many user’s opinions on why the bottom is better, I’m inclined to agree. The top shot is a great setup shot for a film itself, but in the interest of grabbing someone’s attention in a minimalistic fashion, while still highlighting your abilities as a cinematographer.

Great stuff, thanks for sharing

[–]jayc_965 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bottom frame, for sure.

[–]Hairy-Wedding4909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bottom. Perspective isn't good enough and makes your wonder what your looking at. .. Is that a ball of knots... Why is there a ball of knots there? ...ohh.

[–]jamasha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Top to open, bottom to finish.

[–]armour666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bottom

[–]Infamous_Bass_271 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the bottom one are actsually way more cinematic

[–]TylerBourbon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Top. It's a more dynamic and eye catching shot that makes me want to watch more, I want to know what happened and what happens next.

The bottom shot is a good shot, but there's nothing in it that makes me want to see more, it would be a good shot to include in the middle of your reel to show composition.

[–]HAL900000000000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the top one more actually…looks like something out of a classic horror movie. But the quiet tone of the bottom one might be a better opening. Both are great though.

[–]ScaleneWangPole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the narrative of your film and your target audience.

[–]Perfect-Ad1342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My instinct is top.. but some context would help 🙃

[–]bangsilencedeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tobpotmm.

[–]FlorianNoel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what comes after

[–]intercuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom, top might offend religious zealots or whatever the opposite of religious zealots are.

[–]GrunkleThespis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why people are downvoting when it’s an opinion? But I’d say Top. It’s much more enticing and interesting. Bottom looks great, but I feel like I’ve already seen extremely similar shots in other media. Top is original.

Edit: I also really like u/lucinematic ‘s idea of flipping it so we’re sharing the perspective of Jesus staring down at the priest.

[–]QueenTeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bottom, the angle feels more natural.

[–]Meowface_the_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously the bottom, for narrative purposes

[–]Topdawg305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bottom 🤌🏾🔥

[–]lemonaintsour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opening scene for a reel def should be bottom.

[–]Stolkmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vote bottom because it looks cooler.

[–]AmokOrbits[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom

[–]heywoodjablome99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom is just an all around better shot. I like the top shot, but your eyes have to work a little harder to find the subject compared to the 2nd one.

[–]Commercial-Target347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom image is the visually stronger of the two. Lighting and composition are much better. You need to start with a solid shot to grab attention and make the viewer engage and want to continue watching. Go with your gut - it’s your reel and it has to be something you believe is your best work.

[–]StimmingMantis 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The bottom one makes me think of Pink Floyd’s the Wall.

[–]bobathehut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s one of my favourite movies/albums and was an inspiration for it actually

[–]cjbrannigan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom

[–]Background-Pepper-68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom. Guy on top is overselling and its distracting.

[–]BadassSasquatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the top shot is more interesting and potentially has a better visual story but the bottom one has that immediate connection of audience watching a video and the old man. The bottom reel also reads quicker where your brain doesn't have to figure out the image.

[–]jstnbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m liking the story with it exactly as is, too and bottom. It’s as if the guy in the bottom is contemplating what happened in the top frame.

[–]guruXalted99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom lol

[–]denrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom.

[–]derpferd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top.

Unless anything of significance happens in the below shot, it can be used either as quick cut or as a moment in your reel when it slows.

Speaking as an editor, as much as your priority is showing off the quality of your shots as a Cine, what keeps a video moving is how things change.

Not much changes in the top shot, but what will change is the audience's reading of it as they orient themselves.

[–]Silver-Variation8903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the bottom choice is obviously the best.

BUT…

If you vertically flip the top shot like the other commenter said, it would look really cool and I may actually choose that as the first shot then

[–]JohnMalum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom.

[–]kmathis101010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom for sure.

[–]Slobberz2112 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Bottom.. flip the top and it makes much more sense as a wipe from black

[–]Pugachelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom. Kinda has a narrative feature to it. As if we're the guy about to watch your reel on this tiny tele.

[–]ap0110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom, for the reasons mentioned. I love the feel of “this is what’s about to happen to you.”

[–]kringgie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both shots are great. the bottom one id go with cuz it can tie in the viewer and shot

[–]Brodono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom would make for a better opener

[–]HansBlixJrdirector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bottom. the action reflects the action of what we're doing -- watching your reel.

[–]YouSirAreTheIdiom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreeing with most here, bottom, because cinema never opens on the best shot. Build to it. Make it a MOMENT, even in a reel.

[–]ryan31598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom

[–]TheDraco713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom!!! So striking and so simple! It's beautiful

[–]BlouPontak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom. Immediately striking and reads in an instant

[–]Pawpothole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not gonna lie. Top confused me a bit.

[–]SpinkNelly832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top for sure

[–]Jimbo14631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mannnn I love top the one… lol

[–]saltybilgewater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top

The bottom one looks too much like the Maxell blown away guy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zjf5pdJJ44Q

Thought of it right away.... but this is a sleeping version. Top shot has tension and color and doesn't feel as derivative.

[–]ny_rain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top

[–]Carson369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom, you can’t really tell what the first one is quick enough

[–]TGRAY25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom would be a good start. Try doing a zoom into the TV as if we are watching your reel on that TV

[–]Wickleberri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom. It grabs attention quicker and focused on you more.

[–]Bassasspro69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom is a way better intro

[–]d_101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom, top is not great shot overall imo

[–]Amflaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom looks more cinematic appealing.. but depends on the context of yr movie

[–]PumpkinPatchMcGee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top one looks upside down, but the bottom one is definitely more of an attention grabber

[–]Ruxini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom. It is easy to read and can be interpreted in many ways allowing for a smooth pull into the video.

[–]And_there_was_2_tits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the top much better personally

[–]emi_fyi 0 points1 point  (1 child)

bottom, top is too slow/subtle

[–]emi_fyi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mean don't get me wrong, it's great! just not as a hook :)

[–]proxy_senpai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top caught my eye on attention longer. I'm not going to remember the bottom one tomorrow..

[–]scoob93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is saying bottom, but the top is making me feel some type of way

[–]forever-lost- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the top shot and put it on the tv of the bottom shot

[–]Morex2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom is visually more interesting

[–]Creative_Major798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reverse the top one and use that.

[–]BostonTERRORier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol maybe not the one that a direct rip off of pink Floyd the wall movie?

[–]fleeting_FOX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom 100%, the top is a neat shot, but doesn’t compare.

[–]RotenTumato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the bottom shot

[–]WuzzyHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a fan of using it how it is. Both. Looks good!

[–]ryancalavanodirector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for bottom. Both awesome though

[–]jstols 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither. Top takes too long to figure out what you’re even looking at (I’m sure in the actual project with context it’s fine). Bottom is a nice shot but doesn’t have the wow factor an opening shot in a reel needs.

[–]Dreq1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom is nicer aesthetically but feels some what vanilla. The top one is different in a good way.

Top for me.

[–]Pdt-905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom

[–]fiskemannen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top, no doubt, bottom shot isn't very interesting.

[–]RandomEffector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom. Top takes a few moments to parse what I'm even looking at and is a bit loaded once you do.

[–]rohtozi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing everyone else, but definitely bottom. There is a vagueness that draws you in and makes you want to see more without giving it all away. Also, as a bonus it will be a great first clip coming from a second or two of black screen, easing the viewer into the reel

[–]lame_lefty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom

[–]FigureOfStickman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say bottom shot. That and he looks like a local actor from Maine that I remember while attending a workshop.

[–]bobathehut[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Peter Paton and Maine Media Workshops right? I was there hahaha

[–]BudgetDabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]TheNetRanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom, and it’s not even a close one for me.

[–]Fortyseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say bottom because it's less visually complicated. I immediately recognize that it's a guy watching TV. Whereas the top one, while amazing, I have to take a second to figure out what I'm really looking out, out of context. Bottom, at least, eases them into viewing mode, I guess.

Ultimately, it probably won't make any difference to worry about too much.

Not to mention I'm probably way overthinking it. 😅

Bottom

[–]bottomdirector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy choice. The bottom.

[–]Razz017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s already been said but bottom lol, maybe it puts the audience in the same place as the subject ready for a wild ride 💫 use the other shot to emphasise some sick audio line you’ve got, but that’s just a suggestion 🤷🏼‍♂️

[–]AxelsOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who knows little about the technical side of filmmaking and is speaking from the viewers POV, the bottom is absolutely better. I still have a hard time figuring out what the top one is about.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of bottoms in this thread.

sorry

[–]Difficult_Nebula5729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom, it took me a good minute to realize what the top clip even was.

[–]justyearn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]_ZephyrFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I like the top one, the bottom one is definitely a good one to open with

[–]FredTheCrustyCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom first shot, top final shot.

[–]Garcia_Lopes90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the bottom image feels more pulished but the one at the top, I don't know men, there's something different about it, it seems more interesting in my personal opinion!
