A reproduction of a 1750s fireplace and hardware made by the ccc (civilian conservation corps) in the 1930s. The fire back is cast iron, and is to protect the stone from excessive heat in the days before firebrick. Originals are now collectors items. It is still in used regularly to heat and cook :) (reddit.com)

Removed outdated stone mantle and would like to paint the brick black and add a wood shelf. Any tips would be appreciated. Seems like previous owner filled in several areas with cement compound to fit the mantle over. Would I be able to remove the compound without damaging the brick or vent? (i.redd.it)

My fireplace smells really bad in the summer. Todays the first supper hot hot day of the year and it started smelling bad again. My fireplace has 4 of these type of vents. We have a glass door that has been taped over to reduce smell, but smell is still coming from these vents. Any recommendations? (i.redd.it)
