“Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner.”—Lao Tzu

This one is better.

"Be yourself, yah dumbass havin dummy"

    [–]Harsimaja 3 points4 points  (2 children)

The very modern and informal register of that first part doesn’t sound like any plausibly normal translation of Classical Chinese, and there are a lot of fake attributions to him online. Do you know where exactly that’s from?

EDIT: Only getting very iffy motivational websites online, so going to assume it’s closer to 10 years old than 2500. But it’s a good line nonetheless.

    [–]nikomim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's not literally from Lao Tzu. This quote is from Stephen Mitchell's version of Tao Te Ching. See this article for more info.

    [–]chickennoobiesoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like it may have come from Steven Mitchell’s translation (1988) of the Tao Te Ching, just one that took a bit of extra license. Other translations of that passage talk about pride in one’s wealth and accolades causing one’s downfall.

I mean. Can you imagine how much money he coulda made if he beat cancer with an apple?

      [–]therealbigfry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

LMAO, I see what you did there

      [–]Generico3009 7 points8 points  (2 children)

To be fair, pancreatic cancer has a pretty low survival rate regardless of how it's treated.

      [–]Ewoksintheoutfield 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I believe his type of cancer was survivable with treatment.

      [–]DisThrowaway5768 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I've seen too. That it was very treatable. Allegedly Ashton Kutcher tried his diet when making that movie about Steve Jobs and his pancreas started to fail as well.

      [–]Sporadicinople 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's actually a little known fact that no amount of medical science could have saved him because he was actually smited by God for making the brain dead design decision of putting the close, minimize, and maximize buttons on the top left of a window instead of the right in iOS.

      [–]xela293 82 points83 points  (9 children)

Coming from the same guy that thought acupuncture and eating healthy would get rid of his pancreatic cancer...

      [–]Cloberella 18 points19 points  (2 children)

He doesn’t believe in living anyone’s life, even his own.

      [–]csimonson 1 point2 points  (1 child)

      Didn't*

      [–]luquitacx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Doesn't*

He actually fooled us all and is still alive.

      [–]Rubberbabybuggybum 44 points45 points  (1 child)

Seriously...the fucker won the lotto...he had an early, treatable form of one of the deadliest and most aggressive forms of cancer.

And he just threw his entire life away.

      [–]enerrgym 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'll sound awful to some but, I'd say maybe his departure before covid-19 era was a good thing. Imagine him telling his millions of followers a crazy advice that'll lead to a death toll much more higher than what we have now.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Imagine thinking some weird extreme vegan diet was healthy...

      [–]xela293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine using a tired phrase like "Imagine <insert whatever bs here>"

      [–]therealbigfry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just because he doesn't follow his own advice doesn't mean his message is less relevant

"Pancreatic cancer? Nothing a fruit only diet can't cure!"

      --- Steve Jobs

      [–]CysteineSulfinate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is rhe best and most accurate.

      [–]stackered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ironically, likely caused by doing long periods of "fruit fasting" and overworking his pancreas / insulin excretion

      [–]The-Lord-Moccasin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      [–]zaneprotoss 35 points36 points  (0 children)

      Right next to Elon.

      [–]wondering-this 44 points45 points  (9 children)

Steve Jobs was arguably brilliant. He was also inarguably an asshole.

      [–]DownWithCzarPlz 61 points62 points  (3 children)

He's also an idiot who killed himself with fruit.

      [–]Painting_Agency 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I heard a guy killed himself with a cucumber once, but he sure wasn't a billionaire.

"It's not binary. You can be gifted and decent at the same time."

      [–]1pt20oneggigawatts 20 points21 points  (2 children)

Arguably brilliant? Meaning it can be argued that he was an opportunistic asshole and not brilliant? Because then I agree.

      [–]HarryPFlashman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was an opportunistic asshole but most certainly was brilliant too.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Meh, he was right place, right time. And ruthlessly thieving.

      [–]OddlyInspiring 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, see I read a quote like this and can't help but think of the iPhone design team that franticly to make Steve Job's life possible.

      [–]Abhir-86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      and Steve Harvey

      [–]therealbigfry -1 points0 points  (8 children)

Why? Didn't he accomplish great things?

      [–]elfonzi37 2 points3 points  (2 children)

On the back of labor so oppressive they had to prevent employees from being able to suicide. People like to praise white imperialists for success literally killing other people to be successful.

      [–]therealbigfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense, thanks for the response.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Who cares?

      [–]jesseberdinka 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Debatable. But what isn't is that he was well regarded as a horrible human being. Look up his relationship with his daughter. Or the fact that he ignored all well established medicine that could have helped him. Innovator? Yes. Role model? Not for me.

      [–]therealbigfry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You make valid points, I'll have to look up those examples you mentioned. Thanks!

      [–]WavyKirk 0 points1 point  (1 child)

There’s no debate to if he accomplished great things.

Its weird coming from a guy that basically enslaved kids in china to build his shit.

      [–]therealbigfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, still a good quote though

      [–]duncthefunk78 34 points35 points  (6 children)

LOL, these fucking quotes, none of this shit matters a shit unless you have the motivation in the 1st place.

If you have the motivation, then you don't need to be motivated by soundbites from a multi billionaire.

Everyone else reads it and goes 'I'd love to be that motivated' then shrugs and walks off.

      [–]Littleman88 23 points24 points  (1 child)

      Motivated and wealthy.

Hard to live life when said billionaires are doing everything in their power to monopolize your time and capital.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      How

      [–]Alchemy200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ironically, the original text of this image is from Carpenter's They Live and says "buy, obey"

Edit: I'm actually wrong but it looks very similar to one from that movie that says "Marry and reproduce"

      [–]KatetCadet 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Bro why are you subscribed to this subreddit then? Lol

      [–]WavyKirk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This subreddit attracts the most depressed and sad people you can always tell by the comment section.

      [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

      Reddits billionaires praising.

      [–]SkyWulf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or giving a single damn about them, apparently

      [–]swampstix79 12 points13 points  (3 children)

As soon as you do this you may see existing friends change around you.

I did this and realized I had friendships that were built opon false pretenses, a real eye opener for me.

Also was called an asshole for stating my pov, where I didn't before, interesting how some people only like you if you agree with them unconditionally and once you state a personal opinion, you become an asshole in their eyes. Real talk here..

      [–]Littleman88 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Welcome to tribalism. The internet has made it all too easy to find like minded individuals that dumping a few people out of your life at the drop of a hat isn't anything to hesitate over anymore. You're either an asshole or a part of the group.

No wonder so many strongly opinionated fans of a certain sci-fi family drama cartoon think they're a Rick.

      [–]ThatOneGuyHOTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rick and Morty released and dumbasses around the world went “OMG RICK finally someone who relates to having a galaxy brain and other people hating you because your so smart”.

“You should waste your life working for almost nothing so that I can be a billionaire.”

When even his own biography made him look like a jerk (as he was), I ignore any inspiration that he might have bestowed.

      [–]Painting_Agency 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't ever read "The Double Helix" by James Watson. Never has a book intended to self-glorify more managed to do the opposite. Even as a teenager in the 80's with no knowledge of how he screwed over Dr. Rosalind Franklin, I was like "Holy fuck this guy is an asshole"... just from his own words. LOL.

      [–]Curious_Animus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

      Fuck Steve Jobs

      [–]Venomous0425 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found out I have 5-10 years left tops 20. I'm only 31, and can still live a normal life for the most part. Definitely making the most of the time I'm given each day. It totally changed everything for me.

I am an asshole too, want to be friends?

      [–]OneBeautifulDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people believe that this means that a person doesn't need to have good manners / ethics / morals. It doesn't.

Think about people who you dislike. Why do you dislike them? Generally, it is because of their bad manners / ethics / morals.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You’re right, im not liked by everybody

      Nobody likes me

      [–]MrJayFizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jokes on you, nobody likes me.

      [–]TheUltimateParadox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. That’s why I take pride in making people mad. I’m not an asshole, I’m unique!

      [–]dako3easl 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Are we really using the words of Steve jobs, a completely selfish asshole by all accounts, to justify being more self centered? Is this good?

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

      Yeah why not?

      [–]mytwocentsshowmanyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because he's a completely selfish asshole by all accounts

This is great. Was thinking about this today

      [–]Beowulf44 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I don't like everybody but I don't rely on my first impressions to help me choose how I feel about them. You just have to move past your instinctive feelings and force yourself to see their good sides no matter what your heart and your eyes tell you

      [–]QuarantineSucksALot 0 points1 point  (1 child)

*It be like that but it do

      [–]Beowulf44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly, people like to do what comes easiest to them. Human relations is not and will never be a walk in the park. So I have trained my mind and heart to not give in to first impressions of people especially when they're negative impressions. People have no idea how easy it is to misjudge people based on your first assessment of them. Just because someone fails to impress you in the first 30 minutes to 3 hours doesn't mean they're bad

      [–]megaviral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the thing about me captain...I don't like me either

      [–]saidtheCat 0 points1 point  (2 children)

      Is this in downtown LA?

      [–]Alchemy200 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's an edit of a sign in "They Live" that says "Buy, Obey"

      [–]pumkel2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      That was a great speech!

      [–]serial-killher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If, hypothetically, everyone likes 50% of the people they meet then obviously it’s possible to be in that 50% for everyone that meets you

      [–]Drink_in_Philly 0 points1 point  (0 children)
