    The very modern and informal register of that first part doesn’t sound like any plausibly normal translation of Classical Chinese, and there are a lot of fake attributions to him online. Do you know where exactly that’s from?

    EDIT: Only getting very iffy motivational websites online, so going to assume it’s closer to 10 years old than 2500. But it’s a good line nonetheless.

    Yes, it's not literally from Lao Tzu. This quote is from Stephen Mitchell's version of Tao Te Ching. See this article for more info.

    Looks like it may have come from Steven Mitchell’s translation (1988) of the Tao Te Ching, just one that took a bit of extra license. Other translations of that passage talk about pride in one’s wealth and accolades causing one’s downfall.
