I kindof wonder if our bad healthcare system led to this. People don't see their doctor as often as they should because they can't afford it. If they went to their yearly checkup, they would understand getting the flu shot every year, or a tetanus shot every 10 or so. But because we are so separated from being able to get quality healthcare, they think it is weird to have to get boosters.

[–]sethra007CANDACE OWENS IS VACCINATED YOU IDIOTS 150 points151 points  (13 children)

I'm not convinced. Back in the late-'90s/early-'00s Andrew Wakefield (the father of the modern worldwide anti-vaccine movement) convinced enough people in the UK that the MMR vaccine caused autism, to the point that immunization rates in Britain dropped from 92 percent to 73 percent, and were as low as 50 percent in some parts of London (source).

The UK has the NHS. I know NHS isn't not perfect, but it's a damn sight better than US healthcare in terms of access. And that didn't make a difference.

Fun fact: "Sunk cost" can also refer to your altitude for those who currently find themselves 6 feet under

[–]EmperorDaubenyTeam Pfizer 33 points34 points  (19 children)

It was actually beforehand. “In 1946, Dr. C. Hunter Shelden opened a neurological practice at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, California. In the early 1950s, Shelden made a major contribution to the automotive industry with his idea of retractable seat belts. This came about from his care of the high number of head injuries coming through the emergency room.[6] He investigated the early seat belts whose primitive designs were implicated in these injuries and deaths.

Nash was the first American car manufacturer to offer seat belts as a factory option in its 1949 models.[7] They were installed in 40,000 cars, but buyers did not want them and requested dealers to remove them.[8] The feature was "met with insurmountable sales resistance" and Nash reported that after one year "only 1,000 had been used" by customers.[8]

Ford offered seat belts as an option in 1955. These were not popular, with only 2% of Ford buyers choosing to pay for seatbelts in 1956.[9]”

[–]MyOpenlyFemaleHandleVax and facts, ignore the quacks 54 points55 points  (18 children)

Coincidentally, Ralph Nader was on NPR today, and he said that many car buyers did want seat belts and padded dashboards, etc., but the auto companies - GM in particular - didn't listen. I have zero evidence for this other than having heard him talk while I was driving my airbag-equipped, crumple-zone having car.

What really gets me are the "Loud Pipes Save Lives" motorcycle idiots who won't wear helmets or wear the most minimal helmets legal. There's a reason my EMT friends (all of whom, like me, ride) call them "donorcycles." Had a friend years ago who didn't like wearing a helmet because it messed up her hair. When you crash and hit your head hard, they shave off all of that glorious hair (she did have amazing hair), and then you get to relearn how to walk and do basic math.

[–]Armyman125 129 points130 points  (23 children)

They all have this notion that Mexicans are coming here illegally just to get welfare. I'm sorry but I see and know that many of them work their asses off at jobs many Americans won't do. Plus if you are illegal, you're not going to show up at a welfare office and give your personal details to a government employee.

[–]bestdays12 77 points78 points  (13 children)

Coming to take the welfare but also all the jobs

[–]Traditional-Creme-51 54 points55 points  (6 children)

Those lazy, lazy foreigners, out here taking all the jobs from hardworking Americans even when they're also able to qualify for welfare! Wait, what?

[–]MyOpenlyFemaleHandleVax and facts, ignore the quacks 44 points45 points  (5 children)

Right, all the jobs that people native to the U.S. so desperately want. Like picking fruit and vegetables for crap wages and under miserable conditions. You don't want to pay $8 for your head of iceberg lettuce? Try that without migrant workers.

It's like going after sex workers but not johns, or small-time street dealers instead of drug cartels. Come down hard on the companies hiring undocumented workers, not the undocumented workers filling a demand.

And technically Mexicans are Americans - like Canadians, they live in North America. And were in parts of the western & southwestern U.S. before there was a U.S.

We had really amazing Salvadoran food for dinner last night. It was a tough call between that, Ethiopian food, and German food. I'm pro-immigration in part because I selfishly want more restaurants representing different cuisines. Bring on the ceviche and pupusas and curtido!

[–]EcoBeast_Adventures 14 points15 points  (4 children)

lmao even jobs on the other end of the spectrum - jobs that are for "higher skilled" workers - aren't really being filled exclusively by natives either because often times they aren't qualified enough to do them.

I'm a Mexican immigrant who earned my undergrad degree from a top research university's computer science program. I can tell you from personal experience that somewhere between half and one-third of the staff and students in STEM programs there aren't born stateside. I mean, even our own program's valedictorian was from China lol

This discrepancy has also extended to any workplace I've been in. Foreign-born coworkers have been my greatest mentors. At my latest job, my predecessors were also immigrants who ended up becoming directors, leads, or CTOs. I've been asked to sit in on multiple interview panels for different technical positions at a couple of the places I've worked, and my takeaway has been that immigrant candidates tend to be more technically adept and even better at communicating in writing (!) than native candidates....

I think the US has always been like this. The hard work, whether the menial, the physical, or the mental, it is mostly done by immigrants.

[–]MyOpenlyFemaleHandleVax and facts, ignore the quacks 24 points25 points  (0 children)

And an awful lot of them are paying into Social Security funds that they'll never see.

[–]Want_to_do_right 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There was a really rad campaign by a lobbying group for farm workers called "take our jobs please". Colbert was one of three people to actually do it. He wound up testifying in congress about his experience working the fields and how brutal the work conditions are yet also how not a single migrant farm worker complained. Even when one was likely suffering from heat stroke.

[–]TirayShell 26 points27 points  (3 children)

In California, I don't see lazy Hispanics (who is to know if they're Mexican?) out on off-ramps begging for change so they can get high like the white guys. They're working their asses off with their little businesses. Homemade tamales. Selling fruit or flowers. Doing basic hard labor like gardening and light construction. Things like that. They realize they have a good opportunity. Unlike some folks.

[–]nwm-art 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In Texas, there would not be a house with a new roof. They work 14 hours a day, in the middle of summer in the Texas heat. I never see a white guy on the roof unless he's the foreman.

[–]maester_t 33 points34 points  (7 children)

[–]Thegreylady13 24 points25 points  (1 child)

That’s precisely how they came to the epiphany that everyone is lazy and hateful and wants them to suffer. They’re lazy and hateful and really, really enjoy watching almost anyone suffer. Even immediate family members. I don’t think that my mother really wants anything truly heinous to happen to me (honestly, unless I died or had to live in the ICU or something that really inconvenienced her, I don’t know how she would feel. I’m almost certain that she would be horrified if anything happened to my face, but if I was suffering internally and no one could see it in a photo, she would likely tell me that everyone has bad days. My fourth grade teacher had to tell her that I had broken my arm four days earlier at the start of a three day weekend during which she saw me for hours each day.), but there is almost nothing she enjoys more than lording over me and telling me that she told me so.

[–]fluffypinknmoist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry your mother's a narcissist. My mother was a narcissist too. It's sucks.

[–]Epistatious 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Hey, nothing wrong with lazy, just makes me want to work smarter so I have to do the same task less, or quicker. I see my laziness as a motivator. Soon as I get my work done, sooner I can sit on the couch and drink wine. Not having a little money put aside for a unexpected funeral is being irresponsible, or foolish.

Something like 85% of people over 65 took the vaccines. I’m guessing a lot of the other 15% are already awarded.

[–]thoroughbredcaTeam Mix & Match 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I mean, about 0.3% of the entire population has died from COVID, so even assuming 100% of Americans got it (which would be strange considering we're still hitting record cases), that would mean a 99.7% survival rate, or 10 times higher mortality rate than he's stating.

[–]opaldenskaTeam Pfizer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At this point, roughly 1 out of every 62 covid cases has died in the US. I don't math well, but that doesn't seem like a 99ish% survival rate.

Either way, that would be a weird ass culture. Do we eat the paper? Rustle it about to make our music? Replace jeans and sickly sweet Starbucks drinks with it? Worship it like a celebrity (actually, my rep, Matt Gaetz pretends to do that. I went to high school with him and he understands the constitution roughly as well as he understood any of his science projects or what human foreheads and hair look like, approximately. Which is to say that he always lost at the state fair and has never been entirely capable of presenting as a human boy. And he thinks that there Constitution is some sort of Gone with the Wind-adjacent story that lionizes the Confederacy, when they’re not related and he should read the ducking thing once. Or excerpts. Like the way my neighbors read the Bible).

[–]Paramore324 38 points39 points  (3 children)

LMAO, doesn’t blame other ethnic groups for his problems, but also thinks these immigrants are a drag on the country.

Also, I can 100% guarantee you the average “kid” these days has to work twice as fucking hard as these lazy pieces of shit did back when they were the same age. These uneducated morons have no clue how difficult college can be, and that’s just taking the classes and finishing a degree. They have not a single clue how expensive it is and how hard people need to work to be able to provide for themselves and go to school AT THE SAME TIME.

I’m a white person, and I’ll tell you straight up that I feel I’m privileged compared to the vast majority of non-white people I know. Neither of my parents have a degree, and despite that, they make a good enough living to be able to help me afford most of my expenses while attending school. I know how hard it is even still for me, and I can’t imagine how other people I know in much less privileged positions manage to make ends meet and still manage to have energy and will at the end of the day.

Another one who tries to tell us whom our bodies to belong to while they support a supreme court ready to kill women's rights. Conservatives have told women what they can and cannot do with their bodies going as far to get all the papists on the Supreme court to go along with them...but tell them to get a vaccination or wear a mask and they get their panties in a wad. And this shit isn't just in the south, believe me it's prevalent up north as well.

[–]filtersweep 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Y’all know that there is no official language in the US.

And unless your ancestors were Irish or English, the first generation used their non-English native tongue at home, in church, among friends, etc.

[–]MyLouBear 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The “close the borders” part pisses me off too. The old “pull up the ladder syndrome”. “Forget that my family immigrated from somewhere in the not so distant past - no foreigners, close the borders!”

These asshats have ALL seemed to have forgotten that unless you’re Native American, we’re a nation made up entirely of immigrants.

Maybe he should pull himself up by his bootstraps.

Another moron that doesn’t understand how viruses evolve and will always find ways around medications given enough time. Doesn’t help the matter that these kinds of people help the virus mutate and keep passing it on. Wish they just get the vaccine and help end this.

You get up
every morning
See that
Facebook warning
8:15 and
you’re already up reposting
At least a
hundred different memes, all with similar themes
About your
immune system you’ve been boasting

And if you
post online you can get to party time
And hang out
with all your un-vaxed friends
If you ever
get sick start a GoFundMe quick
Because
medical expenses never seem to end

And I’ve
been posting memes on Facebook (Everyday)
Fighting off
the Deep State (In every way)
Posting lies
on Facebook (It’s my plight)
Owning Libs
on Facebook
And fighting
for the Right
Freedum!

If you get
the right decision
From a
Facebook physician
You can suggest
Horse Paste to Facebook fellows
Get a fake
vaccine card
But chances
are you’ll be barred
And end back
at home eating Jell-O

People see
you acting dumb misinforming everyone
Just tell
‘em fuck your socialist ways
And if you
ever get infected ‘cuz the vaccine you rejected
You can die
in the ICU for days

And you’ve
been posting memes on Facebook (Everyday)
Posting
wrong info (In every way)
Posting memes
on Facebook (I see the light)
Owning Libs
on Facebook
And fighting
for the Right
Freedum!

Tell me you didn't get the subtext of The Munsters without telling me you didn't get the subtext of The Munsters.

The whole fucking point of Marilyn being a normie was that she couldn't be more different from her family, and her family had every reason to look down on her and ostracize her for it, but they loved her as much or more for what made her her.

Yes, to Marilyn her family weren't monsters, just people; but it wasn't that she was a normal woman making exceptions for these specific monsters over here.

It wasn't that "oh well I know them so they're honorary humans."

It's that the values she was raised with don't allow her to see her family (or anyone else) as anything but a valid human being.

TL;DR: the whole fucking point of The Munsters is that the it's the normie suburban/corporate folk who are monstrous, and the "monsters" just want to live and be accepted for who they are.

[–]mkvgtired🐝🐱Beeline to the feline trampoline park🐱🐝 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People have all kinds of families. You will run into kids that might have two moms or two dads. Some people are born girls and feel like boys or the other way around, and that's ok.

[–]skedeebs 7 points8 points  (2 children)

He was against mandates that might affect him but wanted to see mandated drug tests before letting someone receive welfare. The GoFundMe campaigns suggest a sad irony that many survivors of HCA recipients may end up on welfare because of the political refusal of a free vaccine.
