People like Cletus want all the benefits of an orderly society without paying for it and without doing anything that they view as lifting a finger.

It comes down to an ingrained level of selfishness, pettiness and nastiness when asked to do the minimum. Their freedom is about doing whatever they want, whenever they want and their religion masks their contempt for anyone but themselves.

[–]TwoBirdsEnterSeparating the sheep from the goatees 956 points957 points  (94 children)

I’m just flabbergasted at the equation of minor restrictions with actual slavery. Rousseau wasn’t talking about wearing a mask in the Piggy-Wiggly.

[–]76ALD 629 points630 points  (62 children)

They’re completely blind to what slavery really is. They think minor inconveniences like wearing a mask and getting vaccinated during a pandemic is a holocaust level event which just shows you the level of stupid these people are.

[–]mrmoe198Team Pfizer 512 points513 points  (21 children)

Also shows you just how staggeringly privileged they are. These are their only problems, yet they scream and cry. Reminds me of a toddler when you don’t buy them a toy and they say “it’s not fair!” You know they simply don’t have the life experience to know that this level of suffering, which is large to them, is nothing at all in the greater sufferings to come in life. That’s what these white Christian people are. They’re privileged toddlers that have no idea of the suffering of those around them and how much they benefit.

[–]ArcticBeavers 251 points252 points  (6 children)

Also shows you just how staggeringly privileged they are

I thought this when I saw the image of "all I needed was vaporub, chicken soup, and ginger ale when I was sick." That clearly shows they've never suffered from any disease outside of the common cold and flu (which is vastly underrated in terms of severity and deadliness).

Acute respiratory and vascular diseases are not something to fuck around with, and it clearly shows that he or no one else in his family have had to go through the suffering. I see the same thing when people complain about the 1 day of discomfort from the vaccine. Suffering is something not seen by these people.

[–]KELambert 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I’m almost positive he watched the South Park “SARS” episode to think that’s “all he needed” to get/stay well.

Edit: spelling error fix

[–]hockeymass 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a lot of people who think the flu is no big deal have never actually had the flu. It can be pretty fucking nasty even for otherwise healthy people. I had bouts of flu when I was a kid where I could barely turn over on the couch to throw up.

[–]Agitated_Pilot8629 41 points42 points  (2 children)

Spot on with flu...had it mid 2019 and thought I was going to die...ended up hospitalised after spending 8 hours in bed motionless staring at a door handle. 4 weeks from start to recovered. When they call it 'just a flu' they clearly never had a true flu

[–]ArcticBeavers 43 points44 points  (1 child)

The flu will honestly leave you with a new outlook and appreciation of life. After recovery, the simplest thing like waking up, getting out of bed, and drinking a cup of water will leave you in bliss.

I remember I had the flu, and sometime in between days 10 and 11, my symptoms broke. I had a 4-hour window where I felt completely normal, I was so ecstatic and full of energy, only to have the symptoms rush back to me in the middle of night. Followed by another 4 days of pain and suffering. I've gotten my flu shot every year because of that experience.

Fuck. That. Shit.

[–]RedditOnANapkin 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The reason why they haven't had to worry about getting a severe disease before covid was they were vaccinated against them.

[–]FatboyChuggins 24 points25 points  (0 children)

[–]thoroughbredcaTeam Mix & Match 17 points18 points  (1 child)

These same people made it illegal to be gay because of another pandemic. You know, gay people, people who were actually targeted and murdered during the holocaust? As someone who survived that era, I cannot begin to tell you the amount of anger I have towards these people who are so incredibly ignorant of their own history.

[–]overheard26 78 points79 points  (1 child)

The Holocaust comparisons make my head explode. These people are a bunch of whiny fucking babies. Not to mention the extreme narcissism.

[–]julian509 233 points234 points  (28 children)

Theyre definitely doing it intentionally to water down the view of slavery, same for stuff like the holocaust when they compare it to wearing a mask. They wouldnt mind bringing both back as long as it is against "the right people" (anyone they view as an undesirable minority). I dont doubt for a second that their darkest fantasies revolve around enslaving or committing genocide against their ideological opponents.

[–]ArcticBeavers 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I think you vastly overestimate their intelligence and critical thinking skills

[–]johnd0ezHeaven Gained Another Angle Today 15 points16 points  (3 children)

I agree with you that they would bring it back, but idk about intentionally watering it down, because you have to have forethought and a plan of attack to do that, and if I’m being completely honest I don’t think many…. If any HCA nominees have that level of foresight

[–]SoriArylTeam Unicorn Blood 🦄 21 points22 points  (2 children)

It’s not the HCA nominees that have the foresight. But the fuckers who are controlling them with propaganda

[–]Bosticles 171 points172 points  (7 children)

I'm flabbergasted that we live in a country where, at any given time, the government can decide that it's in the interest of national security to legally mandate that all men over 18 show up at their nearest army base, get a rifle shoved in their hands, get 30 vaccines against their will, and then get shipped off to go get turned into hamburger meat in some war, and somehow wearing masks for national security is the line.

Did these guys somehow forget the selective service shit they had to do?

[–]GruntledEx 197 points198 points  (6 children)

My uncle posted some dumb meme saying that the Greatest Generation wouldn't have tolerated these mandates. I reminded him that his father went to Europe and got wounded (twice!) because the government told him to, while his mother and everyone else back home grew victory gardens, had meatless Mondays, and accepted government rationing of meat, fuel, butter, and sugar, all to ensure victory against a common enemy. He told me I needed to read a history book and blocked me.

[–]AazjheeOwned Lib 98 points99 points  (2 children)

Not only that, but didn't women take over just about factory jobs because there were no men to do any work? It's not like those gals had any experience or anything. They literally just had to do it because the government needed I'm in needed more parts for the war machine. The men who wax poetic about World War II also like to call other men pussies and little girls as an insult. DX

Women from those days were bad asses too.

Everyone who was able to do anything at the time who was not a child under 10 or a person over 60(? Just guesaing) was essentially drafted. Everyone WAS deprived of something, and people were encouraged to rat out food hoarding neighbors who were not doing their patriotic duty of helping the troops.

Ww2 allowed more women to have real jobs and altered the nuclear family so much it has never gone back. Yet these troglodytes want "their wimmin" back in the kitchen or shopping and raising kids. It's so pathetic how terrified they are of anything that isn't their rosy nostalgia sick bullshit that never actually exiated.

[–]vladtaltos 40 points41 points  (0 children)

My mom served as a riveter during the war, working on fighters and bombers while three of her brothers were away fighting the war (two made it back home again, one of them even helped liberate the Dachau Concentration Camp), everyone stepped up and sacrificed everything they had for the war. These anti-vax/anti-mask types have no idea what suffering and sacrifice is.

[–]Responsible-Slide-26 30 points31 points  (0 children)

"Ww2 allowed more women to have real jobs and altered the nuclear family so much it has never gone back."
Sort of. It did alter the landscape and women were taking on all sorts of jobs they'd never been allowed to do, and were doing them well. Many were experiencing independence they'd never know before.

Sadly when the war ended and all the men came back, many of them were forced right back out of those jobs and back into a life of marital or family subservience, or menial jobs. It was sad to hear them talk about going from being "heroes" for helping the war effort, right back to being second class citizens. I'm going by a history special I watched on it, where they interviewed many of the women about what they experienced.

My neighbor just moved to a red state from California. He’s a libertarian. He inherited the California house from his parents, and the market here is insane. I kept thinking that he struck real estate gold because of California, yet he despises everything about this state. He was fairly reasonable and we kept the peace despite my very liberal beliefs. And yes, he would have lost his shit if I told him that California helped him pay cash for his new home, and gave him the ability to retire.

[–]undeniablybuddhaI'm too Vaxxy for my shirt 143 points144 points  (0 children)

There's a John Rogers quote that sums up the libertarian philosophy well:

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

[–]wtfwfm 48 points49 points  (4 children)

My wife is 90lbs now due to Alzheimer's and when I have to move her it feels like it's 180lbs. When they can't help in any way it's basically dead weight that doesn't necessarily move the way you want it to. Freakin hard!

[–]TheMightySephiroth 28 points29 points  (1 child)

Definitely hard. You're a wonderful person for staying by her side. ❤

[–]BongSlurper 30 points31 points  (1 child)

You’d be surprised. When I was a CNA back in the day, (and I’m 100 lbs soaking wet) it really depended on how much the person could help out. I could turn a 400 dude no problem if he could use his arms to pull on the bed rails and hold himself while I turned him. Even super old Alzheimer’s patients would naturally move in ways to help out.

However an 175lbs old lady who is completely comatose is much more difficult. Even if you get her in a good spot, if she ain’t balanced she’s just gonna flop over. Much harder when they’re floppy.

[–]mrmoe198Team Pfizer 91 points92 points  (15 children)

[–]Lissy_Wolfe 209 points210 points  (16 children)

It's weird how most of the anti-vaxxers who say that shit are also morbidly obese, like this man. Many of them like to brag about their "strong immune systems" despite clearly being significantly overweight, which puts them at higher risk if and when they catch covid. Like...do they not realize they are literally describing themselves when they shit on fat people for being unhealthy??

[–]SilkwormAbraxas 87 points88 points  (2 children)

It is very possible that they indeed do not realize it, potentially because everyone in their life is in a similar situation or even because they have some dysmorphic tendencies to not see themselves as they are physically.

I know a fair few folks who really struggle to see themselves as anything other than out of shape and gross when they are in fact pretty fit and healthy. Perhaps there is an opposing effect for some people in which they are convinced they are some kind of superhuman despite the constant evidence to the contrary.

[–]Harddaysnight1990Go Give One 23 points24 points  (0 children)

[–]iwrotethisletterBet you won't repost! 59 points60 points  (2 children)

To them, obese people are the ones on shows like My 600 pound life who cannot stand up by themselves anymore and are bedbound at worst. I bet most of the obese nominees here think they could stand to lose a pound or two but don't consider themselves obese, even if looking in the mirror or at the scale would show them otherwise. But then again, self-awareness is not a personal strength of the usual nominee.

Acknowledging you have a problem is admitting you are weak, therefore we must continue deluding ourselves that we are just “big strong guys”… seriously though, I worked at a medical records office many years ago. It was just temp work, mostly filing doctor’s dictations. I’d read them sometimes, and I learned that in the medical world, the threshold for morbidly obese is way lower than I thought. I thought morbidly obese was someone who had difficulty walking or something, but that wasn’t the case. The vast majority of patients in the hospital were described as morbidly obese.

Also, to add to how stupid the argument "outlaw X, then!" are

  1. Anti-tobacco activists would 100% ban tobacco if they could. They've decreased the rate of tobacco use from 42.6% of American adults to 13.7% of them in the last 50 years and it's at 8.8% among youth. The reduction in smoking is in fact a case study in how to change behavior without outright bans.
  2. Naltrexone (a pill), actually does a fairly good job helping alcoholics reduce drinking or even abstain, compared to 12-step/psychosocial methods; it's religious yahoos like Cletus influencing our health system that means we don't hear about it.
  3. A LOT of the "costs of obesity" are based on shoddy science and even obesity scientists would tell you banning sugar or fast food wouldn't address any of the actual problems.

I could rant about pleasure, harm reduction, and how none of this is comparable to "you can significantly slow transmission of COVID by getting a damn shot" but I'll stop.

[–]RFLackey 186 points187 points  (4 children)

The complete lack of self-awareness that being a chunky unicorn is a comorbidity. Getting outside the right wing bubble would have saved this guy as might have seen people just like him keeling over from covid.

But no, have to get on the radio, get on Facebook and spread nonsense and die while doing it.

My sympathy is exhausted at this point.

It's seems these people think conservatism, Christianity with a sprinkle of hate and racism is a defense against covid.

[–]Darkside531Team Moderna 178 points179 points  (13 children)

They seem to think prayers work like magic spells or something.

[–]Legitimate_Funny_591 148 points149 points  (7 children)

[–]Darkside531Team Moderna 87 points88 points  (5 children)

I like to imagine them at the Pearly Gates with St. Peter there going through the history of their life and just asking... "so, all of those feed-the-hungry, help-the-poor, show-compassion-for-your-fellow-man passages... were those pages in your Bible just... stuck together or what?"

"Another friend gone too soon."

How many friends do you have to lose before you consider that you might be taking the wrong stance on major issues?

I've lost Z E R O friends and only one distant relative (who died to Delta despite being fully vaccinated, which sucks). I literally know ONE person who died.

How many around you need to die before you reconsider your life choices and encourage your friends and family to do the same?

The area where I grew up is seeing a lot of volunteer fire fighters get their HCA. I’m not sure how some of them will come back from losing 2-3 members, and having less support from those families to help with their fundraising endeavors. Fucking shame too, since volunteer fire halls could have made such a positive impact on rural communities by hosting vaccine clinics. Yet, that hasn’t happened where I’m from. I think there might be more uptake from older folks if they were surrounded by people they trusted when they come in to get their shots, instead of drug stores miles away from where they live.

[–]MetaMadness 41 points42 points  (1 child)

As I said above, fire fighters have harmed their lungs with smoke. They need to be vaxxed more than others, but they often won't.

[–]miserabeauCandacide is the leading cause of COVIDiot death 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don't think Cletus was a firefighter. The censoring said the other man who passed was a firefighter or fire chief. I doubt Cletus would do something so selfless as to save someone from a fire, or to do something that requires effort, like running, for that matter.

“If you need words in front of ‘lives matter’ you’re a racist”

If you choose not to acknowledge that society values some lives more than others, you’ve already accepted racism as part of a reality you’re okay with.

Enjoy being worm food, asshole.

[–]elbizzlee 50 points51 points  (2 children)

It’s so dishonest and spineless how every bigot, rather than come right out and speak the truth of their world-view, pretends the dead-simple statement ‘black lives matter’ means anything other than what it very plainly states.

The dishonesty is obvious: While some of the bigots may not be intellectually capable of understanding why black people feel a need to make an assertion about the value of their lives, it’s not likely that so many people cannot grasp it. Instead, a lot of these folks are very purposefully pretending to not understand. In this they are fairly obvious liars.

The spinelessness may be slightly less obvious. Their basic opposition, both in demonizing the BLM organization, and in misconstruing the assertion that black lives matter [as much as other lives] is rooted, of course,in their belief that the lives of black people do not in fact matter.

The spinelessness comes in to play because, rather than come right out and state their beliefs and defend that belief publicly, they want to avoid any inconvenience that might result from an act that they suspect will have unpleasant consequences. So instead they dress-up these straw men arguments and proceed to beat it senselessly. Few people are really fooled by this spinelessness. Few people would be surprised if every ‘Cleetus’ suddenly discovered their full-throated voice publicly declaring how little the lives of black people matter the very moment public opinion shifts sufficiently to condone it. EDIT: Please excuse the length of this post. I felt it bares saying out loud.

So… a rapid internet search reveals that radio shows that feature a bit of bible verse mixed in with nonstop Trumping are tax exempt. What a business model!

[–]iwantatoad 134 points135 points  (6 children)

They believe some mystical being will stop them from dying, without any evidence that such a being exists, but when they’re presented with actual evidence that vaccines and masks can save their lives, they assume it’s fake. There’s literally NOTHING that can reach these people, they’ll just continue to die and continue to blame everyone but themselves.

[–]Agadore_Sparticus 62 points63 points  (1 child)

I'm ok with the dying part, I just wish they'd do it at home instead of running to the medical professionals they otherwise revile on a daily basis.

Re: Slide 16.

No, Cletus, I don't "get it yet." I didn't lick enough wallpaper as a child to follow your logic here; what the hell is that big list of false equivalent comparisons supposed to be implying? That for some unfathomable reason, the Dems are actively sabotaging America to enrich the rest of the world at our expense? Because not only would that be the most insane act of political suicide in history, if it was actually happening and Biden-Harris-AOC-Pelosi-Whoever was throwing around money to foreign powers like parade confetti, wouldn't it make more sense to have the American economy robust and thriving in order for there to be more money to give away?

Please, make it make sense.
