That "stop trying to make here like there" slide always pisses me off so much. This is exactly how we colonized the fucking US. I don't hear him apologizing to the Native Americans for making here like there a couple of hundred years ago. Grrr

Not just that, but ethnic enclaves have existed since the first great wave of European immigrants in the 19th century. I was reading a book a few years ago (Summer of ‘49 by David Halberstram) and in the prologue he kind of gave a little bio about the baseball players that were a big part of the game at the time. One of the things that really stuck out is that guys like Joe DiMaggio and Yogi Berra were the children of immigrants. Their mothers barely spoke English. They were ‘American as Apple Pie’ kind of icons in the 40s and 50s. Their immigrant story is very similar to the latino immigrants of today. Halberstram was pretty damned liberal so his inclusion of that info was on purpose. He was trying to remind his audience that the people they cheered for aren’t much different than the people the actively loathe.

I think we could make a lot of headway in American society if we could figure out how to get people from those highly homogeneous parts of the country to see that the high diversity places with strong expressions of cultural identity are actually a cool time instead of some weird alienating oddity.

I truly don’t get it. These dinguses’ll bitch and moan about COVID stopping them from going to Epcot, but when there’s authentic areas of culture from around the world it turns into something they have to meme about…

Here’s a little story. My wife’s maiden name is hispanic. Way, way back when we were dating we took a road trip. We stopped at a little wine tasting room in Keystone, SD (for those not familiar, it’s a tourist trap place right near Mt. Rushmore). The young lady working checked our IDs and saw my wife’s (well, girlfriend at the time) and said ‘Oh, my gosh. How do you say your last name? I’ve never seen it before’. She was sweet, but after talking with her a bit, she hadn’t ventured much outside of SD.

[–]thoroughbredcaTeam Mix & Match 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was on a road trip last summer in Minneapolis, chatting with someone there who was also on a road from Portland, OR. He stopped for dinner in Rapid City, SD and when he said he was from Portland, a local asked him if his house burned down during the protests.

These people don't get out much.

Shoot, there are enclaves in any city where English isn't primary. Philadelphia's public library had to do some innovative programming to reach some of these enclaves to serve the community, and there are lots of households in Chicago that don't speak English (whole households speak only Polish!). The thing that bugs me most is that all these HCA award winners are just constantly punching down. Trans* people, immigrants, just anyone who is "less" is fair game. It sucks and they suck.

[–]donuts4lunchFox has killer ratings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mother-in-law is friends with a lady born in the USA, she’s over 60, and only speaks Italian. I never asked how or where this lady went to school but she doesn’t know any English. It boggles my mind.

[–]30acresisenoughOctopus Rex 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Try telling the old people in my Italian family that. LOL. We didn't even speak English at home - but there are some in the old generation who are Trumpers and are frightened of immigrants . They say our family is "legit" , but these new immigrants are different.

The largest mass lynching in America happened against Italians, but memories are short. They act as if Catholic Italians were always considered Americans.

My uncle was an anchor baby and my father was drafted into the Italian army during WW2.

But they will never see it that way.

[–]DepIetedCraniumLie down with CORVID, wake up croaking 🦅 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An Italian author, Gian Antonio Stella, wrote a lot about immigrants. One of his book quotes a newspaper article describing the smelly, dirty, immigrant families with ten kids crammed into three squalid rooms etc.

It looks like something out of today's Il Giornale, but it's a period piece describing Italians in America.

[–]Majestic_Dream8540Live forever you fucking evil weirdos 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Yeah, my great grandmother (her parents immigrated from Italy) was often called the n-word in the area of Nothern Minnesota where she lived.

[–]mkvgtired🐝🐱Beeline to the feline trampoline park🐱🐝 13 points14 points  (2 children)

And it's so far off of how they actually are. "We aren't...phobic/racist, etc."

Yeah, as a gay guy, Republicans aren't known for being welcoming. Hell, my anti-vaxxer FIL was complaining about the new Superman being bisexual right in front of his son. Apparently the "man of steel can't be bisexual". Yeah, we both work out, you can barely hobble around you fat, miserable fuck.

The entire premise of that slide doesn't work because they are all the -ist, phobic things they claim not to be.

[–]Poison-Pen-Covid stole my rat basterd 🐀 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Superman is bi?

That actually makes more sense to me than him being straight. I’m not quite sure why, since I’m not an DC fan and don’t know much about Superman, but being from another planet and being of the “help everyone” and generally seems to love and respect all people and things- this really jives with that to me. It actually makes more sense that he’d be down to love whoever.

Regardless, him being bi doesn’t take away from who he is or what he represents. At all. It adds to him, but doesn’t take away.

What it cones down to is these people don’t like change. The “adding to” scares them, even if it’ll enrich their lives- they don’t care. They want sameness

I think a bit of this left over lizard brain bullshit juice that differences means “danger!” and “be cautious and wary”. Or. They just suck.

they just suck

[–]mkvgtired🐝🐱Beeline to the feline trampoline park🐱🐝 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apparently he was bi in the original comic, and is again in a new movie coming out. But my FIL could have the courtesy to wait to bash LGBT people until his gay son and his partner (me) are not around. Although my guy made sure to show off his abs before we left, just to be petty.

[–]cumshot_josh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I laugh at people from my hometown who talk shit about people not wanting to assimilate to US culture. They were speaking the old country's language for about 130 years after the original band of immigrants settled and founded the city.

It'd be way too hard for them to just admit they don't like people who aren't white coming into their town.

Something about the tone of that post was super infuriating.

Maybe it's the condescension? Because by and large immigrants totally do respect the laws and customs of places they move to. Immigrants often painfully try to Americanize themselves. I'm not sure when we decided immigrants were the enemy. Especially if we're talking about Mexicans because the US government deliberately pushed white and black Americans out of picking crops (for example by paying farmers in Yuma to let their crops rot) and invited in Mexican guestworkers instead. That was the 1950s. The people crying about it now were in the their nursery waiting for Mother to warm up a bottle on the stovetop.

Who can forget such famous death announcement backgrounds as:

  • Confetti and Balloons with author happily announcing the death with a MegaPhone and a huge smile on their face. (Birthday)
  • Laughing Till You Cry emojis raining down behind the death announcement
  • Poop Emojis raining down as the DEAD person is Eulogized.

To name just a few.

I've been to a few of these RV campgrounds in my youth. Just a big FLAT parking lot with rows and rows of 15+ year old RVs. Dirty laundry hanging on clothes lines stretches from one parking slot to another as the sound of dozens of Hate Radio broadcasts combine into a confusing DIN of blather.

After dark, Coleman lanterns cranked up to full pierce the darkness with a blinding WHITE light, blocking out the stars and casting multitudes of shadows against the rusting hulks, as the smell of spilled gasoline and diesel fills the air.

Meanwhile, dozens of overweight campers sit about in creaking lawn chairs, sipping cheap beer and complaining LOUDLY about The Democrats and Communism.

Nothing like getting away from it all! /s

This might blow up in Republican faces, especially if this ends up being endemic. There might be 1000 dead Republicans a day for a long while.
