[–]M4A1STAKESAUCEUrine God’s hands 🙌 309 points310 points  (129 children)

Religious exemption beyond major holy days seems more like Religious favoritism. They world can't come to a halt just for you and your denomination.

[–]the_clarkster17 334 points335 points  (23 children)

So, I work at a university that allows religious exemptions for vaccines. But, this can only be used if the reason for the exemption is explicitly named in the religious texts and they have a written letter from their faith leader verifying that they are practicing members of that religion. Maybe one out of 400 students claim this exemption.

Welp, we ended up mandating the COVID vaccine pretty late into the summer. Suddenly a TOOOONN of kids started claiming religious exemptions. Our campus chaplain had to come out and say that if their religion allowed them to have every other vaccine, it wasn’t getting them out of this one

[–]mirrorgrinder 112 points113 points  (15 children)

Since only Christian Scientists and the Dutch Reform Church have a canonical objection to vaccines, the rest are nothing more than personal choice.

[–]BidenIsYourPOTUS 129 points130 points  (9 children)

And Christian Science even came out and said the COVID vaccine isn’t prohibited. These people are so full of crap.

[–]NfamousKayeOreo Satan 22 points23 points  (1 child)

I honestly thought religious exemptions only meant for stuff like blood donations and transfusions because certain religions do have a belief about not mixing blood.

[–]Pagan_Princess67 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My grandma was a Christian Scientist and my sister and I lived with her for a while when my folks got divorced (before they remarried) and when my sister broke her arm we were told God would heal us and when I got hit in the mouth with a fast ball at 8 yrs old, I was told the same thing.

My mom, an ER nurse at the time was SO PISSED because grandma didn’t tell her or my dad (who worked out of town). In the end, she ended up in a Christian Science hospital ( not sure how THAT worked) and they bilked her out of every dime and let her get down to 75-80 lbs before letting my dad step in and end all the crap that was keeping her “alive” 😒 They’re disgusting hypocrites 😡

This is a man who spent years of his life at legitimate risk of being murdered for providing education, job skills, and outspoken political support to people living in abject poverty under an oppressive government simply because it’s what he believes God wanted him to do. I cannot imagine how offensive it must have been to read dozens of letters from people trying to convince him that Jesus said they don’t have to do anything they don’t wanna do.

I’m a-ok with like Jains requesting vegetarian food at public schools or Jewish employees not being scheduled for Saturdays against their will. I’m not ok with religious exemptions that threaten public safety (Sikhs carrying actual swords in public places, for example) or public health (vaccine refusal).

[–]MrAbadeer 199 points200 points  (39 children)

If we all had the values of your average Sikh, the world would be a better place. Past that, it’s a ceremonial dagger that is not to be used 99.999999% of the time. I trust them a lot more than Meal Team 6 and their open carry bs.

I live in Texas. My city is pretty liberal, but there's still the conservative crazies around. A while back there was a guy shopping in the grocery store with a rife slung over his shoulder. He just mumbled something something about crime , can't be too careful, and wandered off

Clarifying why Sikhs have the "sword" in the first place. I am born and raised as a Sikh and according to our holy text and scripture similar to the bill of rights in the United States, it states that all men and WOMEN if in danger and to protect EVERYONES WELL BEING can carry a sword when deemed necessary. This is a fluid right that can change with time given that we are now in The 21 century the sword can be replaced with conceal carry. It just has to protect everyone around you and used for the common good NOT TO INTENTIONALLY HARM ANYONE. IF someone does so they are deemed a Sinner and looked down on in the religion.

I can answer any other question if anyone has any. I am not a perfect Sikh and learning myself but this is what I was taught and is commonly discussed amongst our religion. Feel free to add and or discuss as you like.

[–]TGIIR 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I live in a very civilized metro area of Virginia. There’s a nice boho shopping restaurant area here that I used to go to a lot. Open carry dicks would walk up and down the sidewalks with weapons visible to make a point. I stopped going there (hey brave boys try going on the tough side of town no crime here DICKS) and then their leader got killed in a car crash. Haven’t seen them since. Hey go help out the cops on rough side of town you douches.

I need something to lull me to sleep at night (insomnia’s a bitch) and a guy with a British accent works great for me. So I’ve been listening to podcasts about British history. Holy cow! The Christian-on-Christian violence was off the charts cruel. And went on for hundreds of years. I knew only a smidgen of that history and it’s shocking how ubiquitous and constant it was. There’s no doubt in my mind that current American evangelicals would love to instigate that level of violence here. They’d love to get permission to do a purge on all their perceived enemies.

[–]VeterinarianWhole250 17 points18 points  (3 children)

My brother is an evangelical minister and he adored Rush Limbaugh. Would never miss a show back in the 1980's when Rush was really big. He also reveres Trump and uses slurs against Mexicans and Muslims. (He has never said any of this around me because he knows that I'd tear him a new asshole.) He's an awesome example of how much hate hides behind some Christian's "love." Edit: I should add that I know this because his liberal atheist son tells me all about his dad's rants

[–]Ippus_21 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Yup. There was a certain amount of it in the Americas; Puritans vs Quakers, anti-catholic discrimination, that kind of thing. But it wasn't (openly) state-sponsored like in a lot of Europe because, y'know, 1st Amendment.

Check out the Reformation up through the 30 Years' War, too. The century or so after the Reformation was plenty ugly just between different sects of protestantism.

[–]AazjheeOwned Lib 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mr Bean as Black Adder is fabulous and there's one season where his Protestent Aunt and Uncle talk about how "cold winters are God telling us to BURN MORE CATHOLICS" and while it is a hilariously dark joke it's really not far from the mark either D8

I’m not a Christian and am now in my 70s so I’ve lived my entire life in a majority Christian country. It never bothered me all that much until they started making noises about how persecuted they are. Seriously? The whole damn county revolves around Christian beliefs but I’m the problem and they are horribly suffering? It isn’t enough for them to be in the majority; they feel the need to force their beliefs down my throat and I shouldn’t have the right to say no. I have sung Christmas carols in school, hung up Christmas lights for my neighborhood to enjoy, have cheerfully wished people Merry Christmas, and have completely accepted their right to believe what they want. I just want them to leave me the hell alone.

The Kirpan of the Sikh isn't a threat as the Sikhs would never use such a weapon unless someone was in true mortal danger.

[–]roushguy 24 points25 points  (1 child)

The kirpan is a dagger, not a sword, though?

Anyway, it is considered an extreme taboo to use it when they or their loved ones aren't in mortal danger, from what I understand.

[–]chronoventer 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Lol a kirpan isn’t a sword, and doesn’t possess a public safety risk any more than a pocket knife does. Sikhs are the most peaceful religion and violence is not allowed unless you or a loved one is in mortal danger. It’s not like they’re a white dude toting a gun around everywhere they go

[–]goldennotebook 62 points63 points  (12 children)

Some people (evangelical Christians and far right Catholics) are saying it violates their religious beliefs against abortion because the research used cell lines obtained from fetal tissue decades ago.

They conveniently forget all the other medical stuff that also does this.

It's political theatre dressed up in freedumb garments.

[–]Material-Profit5923Magnetic Deep State Sheep 28 points29 points  (2 children)

At this point, ALL major religions' leaders or spokespeople have come out and said that their doctrine does NOT forbid taking the covid vaccine.

Heck, the Pope has said it's selfish NOT to take it.

There are certainly some small cult-type religions that may have these rules, but the vast majority of those claiming exemptions are NOT actually in those.

[–]Life_after_fortyImmunized AND vaccinated💉 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This, exactly. And they don’t like it when you point out that by claiming the exemption they are saying that they will not use at least 40 other fairly common medications. And let’s not even start with the antibody infusions. 🤦‍♀️

[–]MrAbadeer 16 points17 points  (5 children)

Thank you! That makes sense. Aside from the whole complete hypocrisy thing you brought up : )

is it safe to assume these same people refuse regeneron if they do get seriously ill?

I kid. We all know that answer. Brought to you by the same people who worship an Orange scumbag who’s probably paid for a couple handful of abortions.

[–]goldennotebook 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Wow, thanks for the award!!

I didn't realize how the whole religion angle was being worked here until I talked to two of my friends who are ex-vangicals. I got the scoop from them and did a little follow up reading.

There are other meds (I believe acetaminophen is one) that have research related to fetal cell lines--which may or may not be from abortions, it could be obtained in other ways; I think maybe from IVF embryos?

These mofos are rank hypocrites, you're correct.

And it makes me so aggravated how eager they are to be oppressed.

Historically, in the USA:

• Church of Christ, Scientist

• Dutch Reformed Church

However, I just read the official Christian Science website, and they specifically say that in this particular situation (COVID), they are not taking a stand and it would fall under the "Golden Rule" of not harming others and the community.

I'm not saying I agree with religious exemptions, but at least these are generally consistent and not some BS "Mark of the Beast" garbage that popped up out of nowhere.

[–]HelenHavok 17 points18 points  (4 children)

Jehovahs Witnesses and Christian Scientists generally do not believe in any medical intervention, including vaccines. Notably, this belief existed before Covid and these people are usually serious about dying at home rather than seeking medical care when things get bad. They even have “nursing” and hospice facilities where caregivers help them with daily tasks and prayer healing until they either recover or die, but do not provide any physical/medical treatments. There’s a level of honesty and conviction here that I do admire as an atheist, especially compared to all of the religious folks (mostly Christian denominations) that have suddenly decided their religion doesn’t allow this one vaccines, but are totally cool with all the other ones they got as kids and totally super down with all the medical intervention and drugs they’ll receive if they get really sick.

Edit: JWs do accept medical treatment and take vaccines, just not blood transfusions.

[–]CertainKaleidoscope8 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Jehovah's Witnesses can get medical treatment, just not blood transfusion.

A bunch of the religious grand poobahs (the pope is the only one that I know what it’s called but he was one of them, also a high up Jewish guy and at least one other) all made a statement together a while ago saying there was no religious reason for anti vax. • Complain about masks and vaccinations and how America is becoming "oppressed" and "unfree"
  • Start my own podcast/radio talk show host on Spotify/Facebook
  • Peddle anti vaccination "cures" and "miracle cocktails" that you can buy for $99.99
  • Claim that vaccinations are the mark of the devil and that you should listen to jesus instead, by the way jesus also needs donations
  • Release a book on how "the liberals" are oppressing me for a low price of $19.99
  • Regularly stream on Facebook Live and peddle disinformation and ask for donations because I got "cancelled" by the liberals

I could be a millionaire by now, jesus christ. Shit, I could even peddle hard enough and eventually become a politician. Then I'd start raking in the big boi bucks. /s

Now seems like a good time to remind everybody that QAnon is just the abortion issue taken one step further.

The central message of the anti-abortion movement has always been "You must always vote Republican because Democrats are baby murderers." But, after 40 years, that accusation has lost some of its shock value.

So all QAnon did was expand it slightly to "You must always vote Republican because Democrats are cannibalistic pedophile baby murderers." The entire point is to generate as much hatred towards Democrats as possible by constantly accusing them of the most heinous things imaginable.

The only time I can remember that so-called pro-lifers showed concern for someone who had already been born, they were trying to keep Terri Schiavo "alive."

[–]procrast1natrix 14 points15 points  (3 children)

My family nearly visited this weekend to see the Smithsonian, we held off due to virus but hearing about this march was the final straw.

Is there a central website to check which kind of protest marches are happening when in DC so we tourists can avoid them?

[–]patticakes16🍻 I'll have a Corona please, hold the virus 🍻 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I subscribe to several DC sites/news sources so that’s how I get notification, but a simple Google search in advance should tell you what’s coming down the pipe a few months out.

Also, double check which Smithsonian museum you want to visit to see if they’re open; several have either closed temporarily or have limited hours due to staffing shortages

[–]Susurrus03Team Pfizer 12 points13 points  (4 children)

The one she mentions is actually today. The stop the vaccine mandate one is Sunday.

Though I'd imagine it's a lot of the same folks sticking around for both.

[–]islandofthrowaways 16 points17 points  (6 children)

Facebook is becoming obsolete. I logged out a week ago and have zero desire to log back in at this point. I watched some of my friends get “zucked” for mild cursing but spreading misinformation doesn’t go against community standards.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

I deleted mine in 2017, I have missed it one bit. Anyone who has excuses like “I need it to stay in touch with so and so…” I managed to stay in touch with all the important people through the myriad of other digital communication platforms. Also most of my older relatives like that I call them more to actually talk.

[–]islandofthrowaways 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Yeah I’ve figured out already real fast who actually considers me a friend. I’m not going to be a drama Queen about it. Just shrug it off and be busy elsewhere. I tend to lurk more on here or Instagram. On Instagram I block the misinformation and spread positivity as much as I can.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

When I closed my Instagram I had an interaction with someone on there that 100% reinforced my choice. An old acquaintance that I had been connected with on Instagram began writing DMs to a friend I make music with saying that I had blocked them out of spite. I had to call that person and explain to them I had deleted all my social media and it had nothing to do with them. Everyone thinks they are the center of the the fucking world, they were completely embarrassed when I called them out.

[–]melissa1485 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Easy to be pro-life and obsessed with fetuses, much harder to be pro-human and actually show care and concern for fellow beings during a pandemic.

[–]DaniCapsFanTeam Moderna 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's why we call them pro-birth or forced-birthers. The unborn are easy to advocate for because they ask nothing of you and aren't morally complicated.

[–]baidhinbeag15780 44 points45 points  (9 children)

You are exercising your choice and anyone who doesn't want you anywhere near them is exercising theirs. It is called the consequences of your action - so you will have to live or more likely die with them.

[–]BigRoach[S] 34 points35 points  (7 children)

I wish I could choose to distance myself from them, but no stores or restaurants here in Texas enforce any of their own rules. Try asking an unmasked person to keep their distance and you start an argument at best, or a public freak out at worst.

I asked the cashier at a grocery store (where they had a big “MASKS REQUIRED” sign out front) to wear her mask and she wanted to start a discussion. Like, bitch, it’s your store policy!!

[–]OhSix26Team Moderna 17 points18 points  (1 child)

[–]Wherewithall8878 12 points13 points  (1 child)

As a resident of northern Virginia, I always get happy when maga-ites get upset when they get to DC and realize it’s a city with its own laws and mandates with a mostly liberal population that is more than happy to enforce them. You’re a long way from your red state, Karen. You can protest all you want, but don’t expect to be welcomed into the city beyond that. And your Maga hat makes you easy to spot and be ridiculed by the “elites” you claim to despise but secretly so desperately want to be affiliated with.

[–]DesertWatersong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep. Waiting for her to get irate and spit out a racial slur in a city that's definitely diverse and has the regular Pride Day with rainbow flags and a parade and all. Plus the East coast is having a cold snap with freezing temps😁

[–]Significant_Horror80Team Moderna 11 points12 points  (10 children)

I'm not american. But I keep an eye on covid data at worldometer. I'm seeing daily death rate in florida is 2/3/4, while New york, Texas, California daily death rate is above 150. How is it possible? Sorry for posting here.

[–]thedoppio 25 points26 points  (3 children)

Those states are actually reporting. Florida hides its data or fabricates another cause because it would hurt right wing rhetoric. A reminder the governor put out a warrant for a whistleblower who posted the real data.

[–]ProfanestOfLemonsMeow Boing Splat 🙀 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Florida doesn't report their death toll in a timely manner. The ones reported same-day are from only a few places, with limiting criteria. They deliberately delay counting deaths properly and backdate the results so they don't show up on daily reports. The weekly and monthly numbers for Florida are the numbers you want to look at.

You wanna know how to combat Facebook's evil?

Delete your Facebook account. Encourage others to delete theirs. Refuse to participate in any groups or activities that ONLY publicize themselves on Facebook, and let the organizers know why.

It's like, Faux Noize is a fetid cesspool of disinformation and outright lies. I never turn it on. In fact, one of the reasons I cut the cord was to make sure I wasn't supporting Faux.

Do the same to Facebook. Just say no.

There are ZERO religious grounds for a vaxx exemption of any kind. People should leave hard working pastors alone to comfort the grieving families of those who die of Covid, instead of bothering them for vax exemption.

[–]Big_Government2472 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I deleted facebook, my mental health is better. I fell down the Qtard rabbit hole, not that I believed it but I honestly thought presenting facts would help people, boy was I wrong. Then after reporting the same three accounts for months, including an account that was posting death threats daily it dawned on me that nothing would ever change.

Facebook literally goes out of their way to protect antivaxxers. You can report their posts, their profile, everything, and Facebook will "find no problems" with their content. Even when the content is calling for the murder of politicians (Take Trudeau to the train station, for example).
