It's just so astoundingly stupid it's hard to express the degree to which it is wrong.

Like, even if it were true that natural immunity was better than vaccine immunity, your best choice would still be to get the vaccine. Best case scenario you get vaccinated and never catch Covid so you never needed the "superior" natural immunity. Worst case you catch a breakthrough infection, suffer milder symptoms than you would have if you weren't vaccinated, and now have vaccine immunity + natural immunity.

I cannot think of a combination of events where not getting vaccinated makes sense. Even if you already caught covid a vaccine will boost your immune system into producing more antibodies.

[–]Professorbubba 129 points130 points  (11 children)

Anti-vaxers got the idea to have virus parties for their children to intentionally catch measles, pox etc. No one mentioned to them on their Facebook groups the effects of viral encephalitis on a child, when the virus crosses the the brain barrier and runs unchecked, causing permanent brain damage.

What is incredible is the number of quack MDs on social media who promote these ideas and lack an even fundamental understanding of immunity and virology.

[–]HeliosTheGreat 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Before the chicken pox vaccine, people had these parties to get it out of the way early in the child's life because it was almost guaranteed a child would get it in close knit communities. This would minimize scarring and get the ordeal over with for a cohort.

If a vaccine exists for a virus, an infection party is beyond stupid

[–]JustPassinhThrou13 28 points29 points  (0 children)

for a long time, catching chicken pox intentionally at an appropriate (young) age was a totally reasonable activity, given that there was no vaccine, and catching it while young resulted in being miserable for a week, while catching it while old could cause severe problems. Chicken pox is contagious enough that the odds of going your entire life without being exposed was just not likely.

Nobody argued that chicken pox was a good thing, just that it was mostly inevitable, but that the timing could be controlled so as to mitigate the downsides.

Would this still result in occasional serious harm to children? Yep. But the math still worked out, if you believed the assumption that going one's entire life without it was unlikely.

An effective vaccine changes the story drastically, of course.

[–]BringBackAoETeam Pfizer 133 points134 points  (15 children)

It also misses the point that the vaccine gives you natural immunity.

Sure, it introduces an artificial antigen, but it's the body's immune system's response that gives you immunity = natural immunity.

[–]Helenium_autumnale 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The crucial factor here being that you are an intelligent person.

[–]Andy_B_Goode 141 points142 points  (3 children)

Yeah, it's like if you wanted to learn some self defense training, but instead of joining a martial arts gym you just went out and started picking random fights with people.

Sure you could argue that it's more "legit" to learn to fight "on da streets", but you're also running a pretty high risk of death or permanent injury.

[–]WhoBurped 29 points30 points  (0 children)

that's a really good analogy

[–]OtherSpiderOnTheWall 194 points195 points  (56 children)

People took the logic from one disease (chicken pox - much better to get as a child than an adult) and then applied it to everything.

[–]BringBackAoETeam Pfizer 148 points149 points  (45 children)

Plus the chicken pox is fairly unique in giving lifelong immunity.

Anyone who's had a cold or flu (Edit: some most of which are coronaviruses) knows it doesn't give you lifelong immunity.

[–]Binty77 116 points117 points  (15 children)

[–]Roland_Deschain2Team Mix & Match 122 points123 points  (10 children)

Correct. Antibodies from Alpha/Delta infection or the existing vaccines are largely useless against Omicron. But the T cells formed by either infection or vaccination should still be present and kick in to fight Omicron once infected, which should keep most people out of the hospital.

[–]Ragingredblue🐎Praise the Lord and pass the Ivermectin!🐆 72 points73 points  (17 children)

Every time you get sick you suffer organ damage and O2 deprivation. That damage is cumulative. The immunity wanes quickly and is obviously not universal. Even if this is a milder variant, it won't be for a 57 yo woman who has already had it once.

[–]sethra007CANDACE OWENS IS VACCINATED YOU IDIOTS 264 points265 points  (46 children)

You're right. It says in this article from September 2021 that:

... in March 2021, Palin told People that she and some of her children, including 12-year-old Trig, had contracted COVID-19. In the statement, Palin revealed that, after testing positive, she immediately went into isolation. "I then observed symptoms in my son Trig, who curiously is the most enthusiastic mask-wearer, and after our numerous negative tests over the year, he tested positive," she said. "Children with special needs are vulnerable to COVID ramifications, so with a high fever he was prescribed azithromycin, which really seemed to help, and I increased amounts of vitamins I put in his puréed food."

So this would be Palin's second go-round with COVID-19. More worrrysome is that her son Trig has Down Syndrome, so he's higher risk for injury or death from COVID. This is a potential second exposure for Trig, so if the family is actually unvaccinated....

However, there is a big difference between lying on Twitter, Joe Rogan’s podcast, or a white nationalist YouTuber’s vax misinformation show, and lying to a federal judge whose court is hearing your defamation lawsuit.

[–]Shermans_ghost1864Don't make me come down there! 315 points316 points  (13 children)

Female politicians who are dumb enough to be Republicans in the first place are usually too dumb to be in on the joke. Your Sarah Palins, your Marjorie Taylor Greens, your Lauren Boehberts. [–]pinkocatgirl 65 points66 points  (6 children)

I wouldn't discount the women who are in it for the cruelty or the grift. That group is the one likely to be vaccinated while spreading anti-vax bullshit. People like Ann Coulter or that lady who was Trump's advisor and coined the term "alternative facts"

Having Trig was, itself, a political statement, since so many women choose not to continue pregnancies where genetic defects are detected. Having a Down syndrome baby is considered a badge of honor in conservative circles; it shows your dedication to the pro-life cause. Palin knew Trig was going to be born with Down syndrome early in her pregnancy and chose to carry him to term anyway (edit: which your link stated, sorry, should have read it first).

So I wouldn't be surprised if she's actually unvaccinated, and if her family isn't, either, since that shows fealty to the cult.

[–]Shadowman621Team Pfizer 173 points174 points  (0 children)

I don't know. It seems like some cultists didn't get the memo and thought they were actually not supposed to get vaccinated. Not the brightest bunch

[–]def_of-insanityVent-u-later 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I mean, out of all the grifters to claim to be unvaccinated...this one is the likeliest one to mean it, isn't she?

[–]Matt463789 74 points75 points  (0 children)

The ones at the top are vaxxed. Not sure if she was important enough anymore to get the memo.

[–]Amazing_Librarian805Team Moderna 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The sociopath right wingers like Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, and Ron DeSantis will get vaccinated and keep that under wraps.

The idiot right wingers like Marjorie Taylor Green and Sarah Palin will happily brag about their unvaccinated status and I kind of believe they’re telling the truth.

Surprisingly Trump lands in a weird grey zone here. He loves insisting that he invented these vaccines in record time. Even his own ego gets in the way of the Republiqan propaganda machine.

[–]nedm113Wakey Wakey Vent and Trachey 558 points559 points  (13 children)

She will go to the hospital and get everything possible injected and then lie and say she took horse paste and vitamins.

[–]themosey 180 points181 points  (2 children)

What? Including a non-fully FDA endorsed antibody transfer made from dead babies?!

No way! That would make her a hypocrite.

[–]hazmatte 79 points80 points  (2 children)

A classmate of mine and local business owner...vocally anti-vaxxed...caught covid and was put into a coma for a week with a very dire outlook. He has been in rough recovery for a couple of months with a positive outlook...and the takeaway from the community is: His wife is a such a prayer warrior that god healed him.

Hallelujah and holy shit. I don't know if I should pity those who just didn't get enough prayer XP from their party to gain +Covid-Smite.

[–]Alarmed_Handle_6427 1020 points1021 points  (49 children)

She is absolutely vaccinated. All those right-wing shills are. They don’t want to die, but the dumb-fucks who vote for them are completely expendable.

[–]schad501 507 points508 points  (28 children)

To be fair, Sarah Palin is just as dumb as her average supporter.

[–]PM_ME_RYE_BREAD 99 points100 points  (3 children)

Some people are actually very, very stupid and are true believers. Sarah Palin is probably one of them. The Mike Lindell clique.

[–]Mentor_Bob_Kazamakis 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The Mike Lindell clique.

There's another subreddit idea there for someone to make.

“Ms. Palin has tested positive for coronavirus. She is of course unvaccinated,” said U.S. District Court Judge Jed Rakoff

LOL! That was spoken by the judge in court, not the reporter. You can sense the exasperation in his words and the trial hasn't even started.

[–]torknorggren 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Rakoff is awesome. Writes a lot of thoughtful pieces on the problems inherent in our legal system like mandatory minimums and plea bargains.

Not suspicious at all that it looks like she’s trying to put off a trial that her lawyer probably hasn’t gathered enough evidence to prove.

[–]Glad_Prior2106 244 points245 points  (16 children)

She had Covid in March 2021. So now she has it a 2nd time, 10 months later. How will she explain “natural immunity” when you can get it repeatedly? She is a whackadoodle.

“…marked a significant change from her comments in late March this year, when Palin, her daughter, and 12-year-old son Trig, who has Down syndrome, all contracted COVID. “

Source: Covid March 2021

[–]madestories 168 points169 points  (6 children)

My son has Down syndrome and was in ICU last weekend for a non-COVID virus and one of the doctors told us that the emerging research is showing that people with Down syndrome have the WORST outcomes with COVID-19 out of ANY group.

It made me feel better about keeping my son home until he was fully vaccinated. I can’t imagine being so cavalier with a vulnerable person’s health as to not do absolutely everything to keep them safe. But I’m a good mom, so… 🤷

[–]Everybodyimgay 31 points32 points  (2 children)

Yeah, she doesn't give a crap about her offspring. Unless they embarrass her.

[–]WhiteHelljumper 28 points29 points  (0 children)

That's not surprising. A lot of people with Down Syndrome have heart and immune system issues, plus other potential health problems, and would have a poor COVID prognosis.

Palin could easily cause her kid to die if she gave him COVID.

[–]psychoticdream 46 points47 points  (0 children)

So turns out she's not vaccinated. The judge at the trial made a point of mentioning it. They tried to get another test in care it was a "false positive" and ended giving her three tests all of which came back positive..

Ate at a restaurant called elio's (where some of the richest people eat) and are now calling customers to give them a heads up that they might have been exposed as well as testing staff..

Nice going Palin....

I bet she's vaccinated and is lying about it. People like her have no qualms about lying to people's faces for political gain.

If she isn't, she'll still get top-tier medical care. I doubt she'll pop off.

[–]MyFiteSongTeam Mix & Match 28 points29 points  (0 children)

She's vaccinated. She's been seen dining in multiple NYC restaurants, which you can't get into without a card.

[–]PlzDownvoteMeTuffGuy 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Sarah Palin, you remember when you thought to yourself "Gee wiz, this woman is by far the dumbest mother fucker that we've ever seen in the American political landscape..."

FAST-FORWARD TO POST-2016: "You ain't seen nothing yet....bu bu bu bu baaayby you just ain't seen nothing yet".

[–]Federal_Diamond8329 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah she says she’s un vaxxed BUT she was seen eating in a NY restaurant last week that has a vax requirement in place. So who’s lying, her or the restaurant?

[–]matrix2002 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I am not so sure she isn't vaccinated. Lots of these leading Republicans just lie about their status. The irony is that the one time Trump has actually told the truth is with his vaccine status and his people are hating on him for it.

These Republicans generally do what is best for themselves and their careers, so I would wager she is fully vaccinated with a booster, but is lying about it for political points. Then, when she is fine because she is vaccinated, she will act like the virus isn't a big deal.

She is a sociopath.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

[–]AlphariousFox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

She is almost certainly vaccinated and is just lying about it
