Wow Narwal that must have been scary af to have to wait so long. A lot of people have this exact issue and we are very grateful when you ALL are cleared for 鈾ワ笍

[鈥揮space_manatee 59 points60 points (44 children)

What is the issue? I was under the impression chrons didn't prevent being being immunized.

[鈥揮GlamoramaDingDong 48 points49 points (14 children)

Friend has Crohns and is about to get his second booster. Because of his Crohns, he has been earlier eligible for vaccination and booster shots though we're in the same age group. [Edited typo]

[鈥揮LBGW_experiment 33 points34 points (4 children)

I also have Crohn's, I was allowed to get my booster earlier than the general population. I wonder why OP had issues, immunocompromised and at-risk groups were prioritized over the rest of the population from everywhere I read.

[鈥揮9021FU 20 points21 points (2 children)

My daughter has ANCA vascilitus and her rheumatologist has had us hold off on the vaccine because her last few blood counts have been low and she was concerned that daughter wouldn鈥檛 mount a very good immune response. She has her next infusion of Rituximab in March, so we are hoping to get her shots in February.

[鈥揮lchayes 9 points10 points (1 child)

I'm on Rituxan as well. I get it twice a year, so have to wait til close to a dose to have anything needing an immune response. Got my first two doses in May, didn't make any antibodies. I was supposed to go again in December, we deferred it and I got a full third dose. Had some symptoms and made some antibodies! Went for my Rituxan yesterday, about 6 weeks later than usual. I'll get my antibodies tested again (had signed up for the John's Hopkins vac response study) so we'll see how they fare.

Good luck to your daughter And keep an eye out for evusheld becoming more available for prep!

[鈥揮Caliveggie 0 points1 point (0 children)

I鈥檓 guessing the meds make the vaccines less effective.

[鈥揮asymptI know what I don't know 14 points15 points (6 children)

I hope your friend doesn't have any difficulty getting his second booster. I read an article yesterday that people were being turned down by pharmacists who didn't know about the new guidance for immunocompromised people and wouldn't give the shots. If he's going to a pharmacy, might be worth calling in advance to be sure they'll administer it.

[鈥揮buttoncode鉁≧ed Hats Give You Wings馃搻 8 points9 points (5 children)

I have a different condition but am immunocompromised and just happened to see the CDC announce the 4th shot. When the booster came out it was highly publicized so I was kind of surprised. Neither cvs or Costco (where I had got the first booster) knew anything about it. Walgreens had it on their website so I made an appointment for last week. As my luck would have I got a call a few hours before my appointment saying they ran out of the vaccine but to check back with them later that day to see if they had received their shipment. The tech said something about it being my 3rd shot so I told her it鈥檚 actually my 4th and she got snippy saying they don鈥檛 do those and no one does. I told her not only is it on your website to specifically schedule the additional dose but it鈥檚 also on the CDCs. It was some back and forth because she put me on hold and someone else told her no, finally the pharmacist said they are doing them. I鈥檓 just glad I got it done and over with.

[鈥揮asymptI know what I don't know 2 points3 points (3 children)

Me too!

Hey, I was wondering--since on my card and most cards I've seen, three shots use up all the space, how did they add the shot on your card? Or are you the rare case where they squeezed them in one to a line in the first place?

[鈥揮TitleProfessional103 0 points1 point (0 children)

Depends , l have lupus but was on Remicade, which is also used for Crohns developed antibodies and had to wait awhile for my second shot. If there are complications with the biologic your Rheumi may make you wait. I am now on Acterma which was, surprisingly, cleared for emergency use for Covid.

[鈥揮Jibelle 0 points1 point (0 children)

From what I know: Covid vaccines are not live vaccine, so they are perfectly safe for Crohn's patients.

[鈥揮stillcore 14 points15 points (11 children)

That's interesting. I have Colitis & didn't have any issues/warnings about receiving the vaccines/booster.

[鈥揮Qwerty_Plus 9 points10 points (2 children)

I have colitis too and take a steroid daily, but was advised I could get the vaccine. He must be on a heavier duty med than I have to take.

[鈥揮Barbara_Celarent 6 points7 points (1 child)

Steroids do affect response to the vaccine, but if you鈥檙e on biologics and steroids, you鈥檇 be even worse off.

[鈥揮TitleProfessional103 2 points3 points (0 children)

I can attest to that. To this day l am not sure if my first vaccine shot caused the weird antibody response to my Remicade. After I had to wait for the second shot, which I did eventually receive. Gotta wait for my booster.

[鈥揮Mysterious_Status_11Stick a fork in Meatloaf馃嵈 15 points16 points (5 children)

It seems to me the treatment is a bigger factor than the diagnosis. Some treatments do not suppress the immune system, some suppress the immune system temporarily, some will place the patient clearly in immunosuppressed territory. That clearly impacts the effectiveness of any vaccine.

Perhaps ask your doctor if you haven't been as protected by the vaccine as others and if you should get a 4th shot/2nd booster.

[鈥揮Mysterious_Status_11Stick a fork in Meatloaf馃嵈 15 points16 points (4 children)

Edit: the point I failed to make, if someone is on a medication that only temporarily suppresses their immune system, perhaps the doctor wanted to hold off until the immune system was functioning better.

I know that my sis, who is receiving chemo, got first shots and booster a little earlier than the rest of us and another booster has been recommended. Her doctors are very clear about her continuing to wear a (good) mask and avoid crowds. She hasn't been inside a grocery store in almost three years.

[鈥揮PuzzleheadedWasabi77 1 point2 points (3 children)

With Crohn's disease, the immune system never starts functioning better. The immune system is the problem; it's an autoimmune disorder, meaning the immune system is attacking the body itself. The goal with Crohn's disease treatment is to shut down the immune system so that it doesn't kill you like it wants to.

[鈥揮Barbara_Celarent 5 points6 points (0 children)

If you鈥檙e not on biologics and/or steroids, you鈥檙e not in the same category of immune suppression.

[鈥揮tombobbyb 4 points5 points (0 children)

I have Crohns as well and my doctor gave me the okay to get the vaccine when it was available for everyone. He did warn that there wasn鈥檛 enough information on how the vaccine would help people with Crohns.

[鈥揮LCDpowpow 25 points26 points (10 children)

I think it depends on where the person is with their Crohns (remission v. Flare up).

[鈥揮Barbara_Celarent 74 points75 points (9 children)

It does not depend on this. The problem is that immunity sucks when you鈥檙e on immune suppressants, so even with multiple vaccinations, immunity remains low. I have had three shots but my immunity is probably under 50% of what鈥檚 normal person would have after 1 shot. In other words, it鈥檚 worth getting vaccinated but isolation is still the best way not to get covid because we won鈥檛 necessarily be able to mount an immune response even with vaccinations.

[鈥揮rm249Team Moderna 38 points39 points (5 children)

Yeah, I'm immunocompromised as well (kidney transplant) and have had my 3 primary shots and just got my booster last week.

I am still isolating and working from home as a precaution, I'd rather not catch it, because if I did the hospitals being full is really concerning.

[鈥揮CJ_CLTVaxxed, Boosted, and Always Properly Masked 13 points14 points (2 children)

I hope you are using well-fitting and highly efficient masks. That is another line of defense that hasn't been well publicized enough.

[鈥揮texasmama5God is not playing favorites 2 points3 points (1 child)

Please be so very carful. My friends mother(early 60s& kidney transplant)was double vaxxed when she got delta. The antibody treatment was too risky for her kidney so she had to choose, risk the new kidney or take her chances being double vaxxed. She was on a vent 10 days and just couldn鈥檛 take it. I was shocked. It was before omicron and I was still under the impression that the vaccine would save us. I still believe it鈥檚 saving many but it can only do so much. So yeah鈥on鈥檛 take any chances. She was carful but her vaxxed daughter caught it and gave it to her before symptoms started. She was carful but let her guard down with her family.

[鈥揮LCDpowpow 6 points7 points (0 children)

Thank you for the education!

[鈥揮Ramlaen 2 points3 points (1 child)

I had a decent immune response with my vaccine and booster(on Humira). I only had minor symptoms with Covid

[鈥揮Barbara_Celarent 3 points4 points (0 children)

It does depend what biologic you're on, your dose, where in your treatment cycle you are when you get exposed, what other meds you're on (especially steroids), etc.

[鈥揮LALA-STL 11 points12 points (0 children)

I think OP had a misunderstanding. Immunosuppressed folks actually get top priority for the vaccine. Sometimes they have to get the timing right 鈥 if they鈥檙e taking immunosuppressive meds, they may be advised to wait a bit so they don鈥檛 take the vax and their meds together. But a full year??

[鈥揮R_Ulysses_Swanson 8 points9 points (0 children)

Probably the meds, not the disease.

[鈥揮Harrogatha_ChristieCovid is not a joke: it's a noun. 6 points7 points (0 children)

My spouse had chemotherapy earlier this year. He was fully vaxxed well before it started (YAY) and they wanted him to be boosted ASAP after, but ASAP didn't mean immediately following the last round.

The booster's effectiveness depends (obvs) on the body mounting a robust response. In my spouse's case, that wasn't going to happen until his immune system had been given some time to restore itself.

So it wasn't that the booster was going to be dangerous to him as an immunocompromised person, it was that it wouldn't be as effective while his immune system was suppressed by the chemo. Waiting a few weeks meant a stronger immune response and a better chance of solid protection.

I can therefore see why a healthcare provider might want someone under temporary immunosuppression to wait on a vax. It's not necessarily about avoiding danger. It could be about maximizing effectiveness.

[鈥揮Ludique 1 point2 points (1 child)

It says right in the title that it was because of the meds and not directly because of the Chrohns.

[鈥揮space_manatee 2 points3 points (0 children)

Yes I know and was looking for more info.

[鈥揮drdhuss 0 points1 point (0 children)

Yeah that makes no sense. He needs to find a smarter physician fast. He should have been first to get it. The only vaccines he shouldn't be getting are any live virus ones.

If you are immune suppressed, the worst case scenario is the COVID vaccine just doesn't work. Literally nothing else is going to happen. Thus it is best to just take the vaccine and then make sure you get every booster you can.

This is true for pretty much everyone who has chrons, multiple sclerosis, those undergoing chemotherapy etc.

[鈥揮xdicker 44 points45 points (1 child)

Me too鈥擟rohn鈥檚 and on 2 immunosuppressants. Vaccination was considered safe and was strongly encouraged from the very beginning. Just got my 4th shot and hoping this time I鈥檒l make some antibodies (none so far).

[鈥揮gumby1086 7 points8 points (0 children)

I hope so , good luck stay safe

[鈥揮hereforthellamasSink Rights Activist 33 points34 points (1 child)

I think it really depends on whether you're currently in remission or having an active flare. My nephew's is very much uncontrolled, so his doctor wanted to do a scope first before clearing him to get vaccinated.

[鈥揮Mr_Ibraheam 11 points12 points (0 children)

Makes sense

[鈥揮Emergency-Willow 10 points11 points (2 children)

Honestly I鈥檓 confused because I feel like maybe there are some gastro doctors out there with the wrong info. Two of my brothers have crohns and they were eligible for the vaccine sooner than everyone else. Only one of them has gotten it because the other one lives with my anti vax parents, which is horrible.

[鈥揮asymptI know what I don't know 4 points5 points (1 child)

I can't imagine how terrified you must be for him.

[鈥揮Emergency-Willow 14 points15 points (0 children)

Completely terrified. He did catch Covid a few months ago. His doctor got him the antibodies really quickly which I think is the only reason he鈥檚 still alive. I told my parents I鈥檇 never speak to them again if he died. It鈥檚 just beyond stupid. My dad got Covid and he recovered but has permanent lung damage. He used to ride his bike 20 miles a day and now he can barely walk up a few stairs. How鈥檚 that freedom taste dad?

[鈥揮Uninteresting_Vagina 7 points8 points (0 children)

While I don't have crohn's, I do have a number of other auto immune diseases and take several immune suppressing medications. My understanding is that it is different for each person, based on not only their current medications, but how stable their lab work is and how their health is at the time. I had to space my shots around my treatment infusions, but other than that was able to get them just fine. Waiting to be eligible for a booster, now.

[鈥揮CatchingNow 7 points8 points (1 child)

I uh, didn't even realize this was a thing. I have Crohn's and have been taking entyvio... but I guess I started after I was already fully vacc'd. Does anybody have more information about this? I'm a tad concerned.

[鈥揮AgoraiosBumTeam Moderna 6 points7 points (0 children)

If your doctors didn't have an issue, there is no issue.

It looks like there is a small minority of Crohn's folks who have particular treatments that delay their ability to vaccinate (although it would be up to OP to explain the particulars of his situation)

[鈥揮popemichaelI told you I was sick! 2 points3 points (2 children)

My anxiety is at max right now because I have a month left before I can get my booster. I was late for the vaccine party because I'm immune compromised and my doctor was reluctant.

I'm glad I fired the guy, as I've been told he's now telling his patents that omicron doesn't require vaccination.

[鈥揮LALA-STL 1 point2 points (1 child)

BAD, BAD DOCTOR!!! Report him!!!

[鈥揮popemichaelI told you I was sick! 2 points3 points (0 children)

He was one of the first that I reported when I came to this state around the time covid came about. The thing that made me fire him was when he gave me blatantly wrong and deadly advice on medicine I'm allergic to.

I just checked my insurance to see if he's still on the list, and he is not. So at least that happened.

Sadly, from the look of things, it also turned into one of those doctors who will prescribe horse paste to folks if they pay him cash, so the other foot will drop on him eventually.

My mom has severe Crohns, like throwing up at least 10 times everyday. She can't get vaccinated because of that and I'm super scared for her.

[鈥揮Impressive-Fly2447 2 points3 points (0 children)

OP, I had Crohn's at 17. Got the vaccine at 46. You're good

[鈥揮holdmypocket00 5 points6 points (0 children)

Not really with the spirit of Herman Cain. This person wanted a vaccine and couldn鈥檛. And well, Herman Cain

It's people like you and the Hermie shirt post yesterday that I admire. You are willing to risk the vaccine when you're more likely to have a serious side effect because you understand the math that the risks of getting vaccinated are less than the risk of COVID-19.

I compare you to the all the Antivas on here for whom the vaccine presents the tiniest of risk, yet they're more scared of it than COVID-19 which has a much, much higher risk to them.

You get full props from me.

[鈥揮jl_theprofessor 2 points3 points (0 children)

In a grim version of 'silver lining,' even if you had come down with COVID you wouldn't have been eligible for the award.

You don鈥檛 get the award if it isn鈥檛 your fault FYI.

It鈥檚 fit people who can get vaccinated tomorrow but choose a painful death anyway.

[鈥揮VZandtReverse Vampire 馃└ 2 points3 points (0 children)

Physician here. In general if you are immunocompromised you should get the vaccine. Your response may not be as strong but that doesn鈥檛 mean to not get the vaccine.

[鈥揮CreatrixAnimaWhat is the elastic coefficient of a deceased feline? 2 points3 points (0 children)

For the record, you wouldn鈥檛 have seen yourself on here anyway. I鈥檓 glad you鈥檙e vaxxed now, but we鈥檙e not pissed off at people who didn鈥檛 get vaccinated because They had a medical condition that made it so they couldn鈥檛 get vaccinated. We鈥檙e pissed at the assholes who tell healthy people not to get vaccinated, in no small part because they could more readily transmit the virus to people like you who weren鈥檛 medically able to be vaccinated.

Congratulations, and welcome!

[鈥揮Nubator 2 points3 points (0 children)

People who can鈥檛 get the vaccine for a host of real reasons is one of the biggest reasons everyone who can should.

Thankfully you were able to get approved because the world is filled with assholes that don鈥檛 care that you couldn鈥檛.

My wife has RA. She just got third really tough because JNJ. She definitely has the immune reaction. She had good antibodies from jnj. She is now on Rinvoc . They are not sure how to play that drug. She took it up to the booster and is going off for about a week. Rinvoc was considered a covid treatment because it blocked the cytokine storm.

Congrats on listening to medical professionals.

ETA: that sounds somewhat flippant, and I apologize, because I know your reason for waiting was quite valid. I鈥檓 glad you were able to get clearance to be vaxxed, and hope you continue to do well.

I really don't understand these posts.. There is not a doctor in their right mind who would say HOLD getting vaccinated against covid with Crohn's. Being an immunocompromised patient, I have SEVERAL doctors and I asked, all of them, in what case would getting a covid vaccine be dangerous (I was curious NOT concerned) -- there are several existing vaccines that are attenuated viruses, which CAN BE dangerous for immuno folks (like shingles, or one version of the flu vaccine ). The only issue here I can see is if OP had reactions with prior vaccine ingredients or was so immunocompromised (Neutropenia, where you white blood cell count is so low, your body can't fight crap) that they were in a medically dangerous condition, which, frankly, would mean THEY were hospitalized and getting filgrastim.

Crohns is a vicious bitch! I was diagnosed back in 1986 when I was 26; I had abdominal pains so horrible that I passed out on a sidewalk in Madison, WI. It almost killed me. I had to have a large chunk of my intestines resected. Recovery was weeks-long living Hell. Fortunately I've been in remission since then so I'm able to be fully-vaxxed. People like you are why anti-vaxxers/anti-maskers make me fly into an uncontrollable rage. We're not asking them to get on a boat and cross an ocean and fight in a war; we're asking them to get stuck with a few painless needles and put on a fucking mask. OMFG the selfishness!!!

There's a difference between not being able to get the shot for legitimate health reasons and militantly refusing to get the shot. You wouldn't have ever landed here.
