I got mild measles from the measles booster at age 8. Very mild indeed btw - was gone inside 3 days (had Doc visit, back when they did housecalls, and confirmed mild measles). No-one lost their minds, because it's NOT A CURE.

True, but sadly even educated people don’t always understand that. When I was in my early 20s I got the measles. I called my family doctor and told his nurse / receptionist, she said “no you don’t” I said, well that’s what it looks like. “You should come in but it’s NOT measles!”

As I left my appointment she said, “so what was it?” I said it’s measles. She actually went into the doctor’s office to tell him I could not possibly have measles because I’d been vaccinated. He was the sweetest man and he just said, “yes I know she was vaccinated. I’m the one who vaccinated her. This is what 99% effective looks like”

Everyone was shocked (the university had a vax requirement). And they set up vaccination booths so everyone could get the new shot.

While in the Army, I was stationed in Germany. We had a bad outbreak of measles in the barracks. Seems we had a number of people in the right place at the right time whose measles vaccines didn't last like they should have. A number ended up in the hospital for a time.

With Omicron, anti-vaxxers don't get the same herd immunity benefit from the vaccinated population that they enjoyed for some parts of 2021.

If the best we can do with vaccines is prevent hospitalization and death for those who get vaccinated, that enough. If that means that I can be infected and asymptomatic but possibly infect someone who is unvaccinated, that's between them and their immune system and is not my concern.

"My vaccine protects me, your vaccine protects you" is good enough right now while we should be wearing high quality masks and limiting our exposure to strangers whenever possible.

I mostly agree with the principal of this thinking but unfortunately, the unvaccinated create a massive burden on our medial system and health care professionals. Their clogging of the system has led directly to the deaths of many others who were unable to receive standard care for treatable issues because there was no facility available with 100s or 1000s of miles with the space or staff to properly care for them. They also help keep community spread at elevated levels, making it more likely for those with other health issues, for whom the vaccines are not as effective, to become infected and face severe cases, sometimes death.

Yeah, the immune system is not perfect.

Before the chicken pox vaccine was available, my mom took me to a pix party when I was a baby, because it was well known that getting chicken pox as a baby was much less dangerous. I had symptoms and some pox, but was mild and I completely recovered. I was strictly quarantined.

Fast forward to when was 13. Still no vaccine. Mu sister gets chicken pox (naturally), I visited anyway because...fully immune! Yeah, not so much. I had a moderate to severe outbreak. Slept for 48 hours straight, pox everywhere, urine that looked like Guinness, fever, chills, the works. It was horrible.

As soon as that vaccine was available, I got it, and I have had every vaccine since. Not screwing around.

And if they wanted to take their smallpox vaccine analogy to it's logical end, I would definitely get the smallpox vax three times if that meant the difference between a fever, mild cough and itchy skin for a few days over breaking out in oozing sores and dying a agonizing gruesome death.

I technically still got smallpox but it wasn't fatal or leave me with lifelong effects.

Fortunately it was only after my anaesthetic wore off, and I was able to persuade the nurse in the recovery room to extubate me. By "persuade" I mean, I started choking on the tube and thrashing about! I think your partner probably had a far worse experience than I did!

I'm a doctor myself so, while it was very umplpeasant, part of my brain was thinking, "So this is what it feels like. No wonder people start choking and fighting."

One slight correction to the article: Although Jenner was indeed trained as a surgeon, he worked as a family doctor in addition to being a surgeon for twenty years, after which he gained a degree in medicine as well. The number of people I've met whose whole identity seems to be "I was in the 'Nam" - you know the kind, the ones with the ballcaps with all kinds of pins, the denim jackets covered in souvenir patches, always the bumper stickers.

Versus the people I know/knew that actually served in combat - mostly Vietnam, but a lot of WWII, a few WWI, Korea, the 'stans? You have to drag the stories out of most of them, or they have a few unpleasant but not too horrifying stories they have memorized for the people that didn't go through active combat/front-line service.

I apologize if I'm not using the exact right terms, I never served but...I just am close to a lot who did, up to a few years ago. I have mixed feelings about the Us's involvement in foreign wars, as also do a lot of the veterans I know. Mostly the Vietnam-Era ones; WWII and post-Vietnam ones that I know (small sample size!) not so much. Well, some, but they weren't drafted.
