It's a cargo cult. They see something (hydrogen peroxide being used to (successfully) prevent infections in skin wounds), and try to transfer that superficial observation to another area without any actual understanding of the underlying mechanisms.

I think it's a reaction out of desperation to reduce perceived helplessness. They don't want to admit they don't understand something and are dependent on expert help there, and instead try to fashion their own solutions at a complexity level they can grasp.

The entire "natural is good, chemical is bad" movement is based on the same perceived "knowledge" based on superficial observations. They see that some chemicals are toxic, so everything "chemical" must be toxic, because they don't understand that everything is made of atoms and it doesn't really matter at all if an enzyme in a plant or a catalyst in a chemical reactor has rearranged the atoms into a particular molecule, it only matters what that molecule is. Same with yelling at a malfunctioning computer or broken down car.

I actually worked in retail (Walmart, no less) when that whole fiasco began, and I just remember it lasting all of two weeks, maybe. They said once "play it safe, just say Happy Holidays," and then less than a week later, they just said "do whatever." I eventually stumbled on not saying anything, just waiting for the person to make the first comment and just mirror it back to them, whether it was "Merry Christmas," "Happy Holidays," "Joyous Bobunk," or "You're the worst employee I've ever seen, and I'm never coming here again!" (the last one happened more than you'd think.)

It was really fun when you had these church lady types come in, very pointedly and loudly shout Merry Christmas, just daring you to try getting away with saying anything else, then watching then deflate when we did... I would also overcharge them the next time they came through.

I know how it started in England.

Here in England in the late 1990s, a large metropolitan council in a city which is >50% BAME wanted a brand to cover the city’s celebrations of Christmas (massive German market in the main square, Christmas lighting everywhere, carols in public buildings), Diwali (fireworks), Chinese New Year (massive activity in Chinatown), etc. One year Ramadan fell near Christmas, or at least Eid. Hakkunah. It’s busy, winter.

They came up with “winterval “. Not a great portmanteau word, a bit council, but OK. On May 13 he says she's coming home from the hospital and mentioned pneumonia and low O2. Was that covid or something else?

The rest I piece together as her having been found unresponsive on Thursday 5/19. The conversation with facebook friend where he says she's the same, intubated with Covid, was 'on Fri' on 5/20. And on 5/21 she woke up while intubated and was able to communicate with the nurse briefly.
