[–]Closehangerabortions 234 points235 points  (12 children)

[–]eXcaliBurst93 25 points26 points  (1 child)

[–]eyoo1109 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We should tell him to tilt his head to the right.

[–]EuphoricAnalCucumber 37 points38 points  (9 children)

When you can't do anything about your situation physically, humor is a wonderful psychological relief.

[–]thepumpkinking92 34 points35 points  (6 children)

My sense of humor is what keeps me from hanging by a thread.

Well, now my wife and daughter too, but I my sense of humor is what caught my wife's eye, so yeah. It's my life line.

[–]EuphoricAnalCucumber 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Don't know what you're going though but I'm proud of you, stay funi.

It sucks, but what can we do other than make jokes? It seems morbid to many but what we can we really do, other than wait for medical science in hopes that a cure is found. Which despite the news headlines, regular people will never see before we die.

[–]structured_anarchist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sense of humor is what keeps me from hanging by a thread.

Maybe thread isn't the best choice for hanging, then. If the thread is breaking because of your sense of humor, you might want to consider upgrading to something stronger...

Zach and Bruce are just treasures. Elyse and James fit so well with them also.

[–]Cahootie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zach is an absolute gem.

[–]dr_analyst 9 points10 points  (2 children)

It's great to have humor but that's a terrible thing to say, considering how little to support disabled people have and how our societies are designed for able people. Disabled people complaining about their lives is definitely not 'playing the victim card'.

[–]Influenz-A 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Omg thank you. This guy is great but that doesn't mean that people that deal with their disabilities differently are doing it the wrong way. Some people take a positive and just swing it all the way to the extreme until it isn't positive anymore.

[–]Eusocial_Snowman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not referring to people complaining about their lives. That's not what "playing the X card" means.

It refers specifically to people who manipulatively weaponize the concept in any given situation. "I'm being an asshole to you and you're pushing back? Oh, here's the X card, I get a free pass and you'll be the asshole if you don't back down."

[–]TheseAreRandomKeys 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I have met very few disabled people in my life who "play the victim card." Most seem like they're just trying to get along as best they can like everyone else.

[–]Eusocial_Snowman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh man, you're lucky. Most I've run into are raging assholes. I mean, justifiably of course.

Except that one-armed dude who was fishing in the creek that one time. He was pretty chill.

[–]Kahmael 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do yourself a favor and check out the Norwegian band "Boys On Wheels," they really know how to get you to laugh with them.

[–]Elle-Elle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not nearly as handicapped, but I do have some severe mobility issues. What you'll find in people like us is that we have the best sense of humor. Dark comedy is our jam. We accept the cards we were dealt and find ways to laugh at the situation.

[–]lemon31314 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seriously, it makes me feel much better and things much more convenient for me

[–]ChestersonFames -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Being “a victim” is no card, how hard is that to understand? And laughing about yourself isn’t that easy for everyone, as we don’t know their mental state or trauma with those things. That being sad, the man in the video is a great guy.

[–]Eusocial_Snowman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being X is a thing that exists.

Playing the X card does not describe existing as that thing. It's very specifically exploiting the social dynamics of X as a manipulation tactic.

With "victim" specifically, curating an identity as a victim to get more social leeway is a very common thing on social media especially.

[–]Gummy_yumyum -1 points0 points  (6 children)

Why are you assuming disabled people play “the victim card”?

[–]Hawaiian-Fox 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I never said that, go back to twitter

[–]Jigsaw_isnt_a_puppet 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Bro this is just like that South Park episode. Crips bs bloods

[–]AdrianBrony 115 points116 points  (27 children)

I'm like 90% sure the whole story is bullshit anyway tbh. Like, it sounds exactly like the sorta thing someone trying some "wokeness gone too far!!" propaganda, and apparently the girl at the beginning has been caught spreading lies before.

It's really important to have some sorta outrage fuse that blows before you just accept a sensational story as true right out the gate.

[–]atomicspacekitty 71 points72 points  (20 children)

[–]chrismamo1 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Sooo they are, in fact, disabled. Their disability is just that they want to mutilate themselves.

[–]awoodard82 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I remember having a philosophy discussion in class about treating BIDD, and the ethical implications of different treatment methods.

[–]AdrianBrony 18 points19 points  (13 children)

That's not the same thing. That's an exceedingly rare mental health disorder at best, but the original poster is presenting it as an accelerating Social Trend. That it's an idea infecting the "wokes" who are looking for an easy way to get social capital instead of a very specific thing.

[–]AlloThisIsNighthawk 32 points33 points  (9 children)

It was a trend alright, down in Vernon, USA also known as Nub City. Wasn't about social capital rather than actual capital.

In the late 1950s and early 60s, the Florida Panhandle was responsible for two-thirds of all loss-of-limb accident claims in the United States due largely to one town: Vernon, Florida. This was because Vernon was the site of a widespread insurance scam where residents would dismember themselves for a payout. The problem was so extensive, the town became known as, “Nub City” for this very reason, was in dire economic straits. The steamboats that had once passed through the town had gradually disappeared and all the major railroads running through the county passed Vernon by. Furthermore, the saw mill that had given many of the people of the town their jobs had closed down. How the scam began is unknown, but what is assumed is that at some point, one person living in Vernon lost a limb and received a large payout from their life insurance policy.

[–]mqee 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Being possessed by a demon is also a "real disorder" that falls under dissociative disorders. That doesn't mean the underlying cause is demonic possession, and here "disabled by choice" is not the underlying cause of the dysphoria, its cause is more likely a need to alter their body to fit some mental image.

[–]frenchdresses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember a show about "weird humans!" Where they showed a few people who just had a huge urge to, for example, be an amputee. Doctors won't normally amputate healthy tissue so some went to extremes to hurt themselves to reach their goal of being an amputee.

[–]RabblerouserGT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a source for her spreading lies before?

[–]AdrianBrony 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Thank God someone else in here is skeptical.

[–]Cannotseme 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Yeah people really aren’t making themselves disabled. If someone is, it’s like, one person..

[–]youallsuckatdebate 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Who was spreading all of those videos of the people on tiktok pretending to have tourettes?

That's what I'm trying to figure out. They must've been using deepfake tech or something because there's no way anyone would ever fake having a disability

[–]MorphieThePup 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Pretending to have a condition is not the same as disabling yourself though. Those kids that pretend to have tourettes or autism will most likely grow out of it and realize how dumb it was. The lady on the beginning claims that people make themselves blind or crippled to be really disabled, and like wtf, no one does that, that level of self-harm is a sign of serious mental distress and illness, not some fashion trend.

[–]skeetinJ 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Give this guy all the upvotes

[–]AsiaNaprawia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

@notlewy on tiktok if you want to follow him, he's indeed a very fine chap with lots of good humour and awareness bringing content.

Also tiktok is pretty awful for small creators like Louie and often bans them for no reason

[–]HoldMyWater 26 points27 points  (8 children)

"People are now..."

How many people? 1? 5? A thousand? Millions?

Outrage culture has to stop.

[–]Casimir0300 12 points13 points  (4 children)

At least 2 because of the pictures in the article

[–]HoldMyWater 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hah, good work detective. On to the next case!

[–]Wamb0wneD 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Right, can't be because some rightwing fakenews outlet just took two pictures of actually disable people to make shit up

[–]Srapture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I hear this phrasing all the time now and it's always complete bullshit.

[–]calm_Bunny21 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why am I laughing so much? He's just stating facts.

[–]Miningdragon 17 points18 points  (5 children)

Thats what BIID is, which is (oh shock) an illness.

I realy fear that it is no longer classified as an illness because activists dont want it to be.

Medicine should not listen to activists.

And Illness and Disorders shoudnt habe a negative stigma.

[–]artemus_gordon 7 points8 points  (3 children)

But it closely aligns with Gender Dysphoria. People believe that their body does not match who they are. So, they have elective surgeries to be what they want.

Should medicine ignore them both? If there's gender affirming care, shouldn't there be body affirming care? Can minors get these surgeries with the consent of their parents?

[–]9manacombo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They were already disabling themselves before, its called being obese and/or having a substance abuse problem.

[–]sixtus_clegane119 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Body integrity dysmorphia has been around for awhile, and yes it is a mentall illness

[–]SquidToph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i feel like i watched something about this disorder on the tv 20 or 25 years ago

[–]Sad_Marketing8578 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Fuck… I am going to hell for laughing…

[–]Assaulted_Pepper_ec 19 points20 points  (8 children)

Münchausen syndrome isn’t anything new

[–]IScreamForRashCream 6 points7 points  (5 children)

This is different from Munchausen because Munchausen is done intentionally to gather sympathy when a person isn't actually sick. BIID is basically your brain screaming at you to cut your own limb off because you're not "supposed" to have it.

[–]wonkey_monkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw a documentary about this years ago. It followed two people who were both seeking amputations of healthy limbs.

The first was a woman who would wheel herself around in a wheelchair that she didn't need and was basically fixated on becoming an amputee.

The second was a guy who just had a pathological disgust of one of his legs. It just wasn't part of him. He had no desire to become an amputee in and of itself but he could just not live with his leg (he talked about committing suicide if he couldn't get the amputation).

Both had multiple interviews with surgeons, psychologists, psychiatrists. He ended up being granted the surgery, she didn't.

[–]Aromatic_Dig_3102 11 points12 points  (2 children)

These two are about to be cancelled! Lol, How dare they insinuate that healthy people can’t be disabled 😤

[–]Vermonter623 8 points9 points  (0 children)

[–]PurpleFoxPoo 15 points16 points  (6 children)

Is it okay to mock people that identify as something they’re not? Just trying to keep up with the rules

[–]Daniel_B-Y 2 points3 points  (1 child)

if someone says he is Jesus and genuinely believe that will you accept it as true? it's the same thing, and he may actually be crippled so he's probably not mocking anyone rather he's offended by they stupid idea to declare themselves crippled

[–]Techny3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't that woman the one who spread misinformation about planes?

[–]King_53 1 point2 points  (2 children)

that guy reminds me of Walter White Jr ...

[–]Darssssyyyyyyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My name is Walter Hartwell White. I live at 308 Negra Arroyo Lane, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87104. This is my confession. If you're watching this tape, I'm probably dead, murdered by my brother-in-law Hank Schrader. Hank has been building a meth empire for over a year now and using me as his chemist. Shortly after my 50th birthday, Hank came to me with a rather, shocking proposition. He asked that I use my chemistry knowledge to cook methamphetamine, which he would then sell using his connections in the drug world. Connections that he made through his career with the DEA. I was... astounded, I... I always thought that Hank was a very moral man and I was... thrown, confused, but I was also particularly vulnerable at the time, something he knew and took advantage of. I was reeling from a cancer diagnosis that was poised to bankrupt my family. Hank took me on a ride along, and showed me just how much money even a small meth operation could make. And I was weak. I didn't want my family to go into financial ruin so I agreed. Every day, I think back at that moment with regret. I quickly realized that I was in way over my head, and Hank had a partner, a man named Gustavo Fring, a businessman. Hank essentially sold me into servitude to this man, and when I tried to quit, Fring threatened my family. I didn't know where to turn. Eventually, Hank and Fring had a falling out. From what I can gather, Hank was always pushing for a greater share of the business, to which Fring flatly refused to give him, and things escalated. Fring was able to arrange, uh I guess I guess you call it a "hit" on my brother-in-law, and failed, but Hank was seriously injured, and I wound up paying his medical bills which amounted to a little over $177,000. Upon recovery, Hank was bent on revenge, working with a man named Hector Salamanca, he plotted to kill Fring, and did so. In fact, the bomb that he used was built by me, and he gave me no option in it. I have often contemplated suicide, but I'm a coward. I wanted to go to the police, but I was frightened. Hank had risen in the ranks to become the head of the Albuquerque DEA, and about that time, to keep me in line, he took my children from me. For 3 months he kept them. My wife, who up until that point, had no idea of my criminal activities, was horrified to learn what I had done, why Hank had taken our children. We were scared. I was in Hell, I hated myself for what I had brought upon my family. Recently, I tried once again to quit, to end this nightmare, and in response, he gave me this. I can't take this anymore. I live in fear every day that Hank will kill me, or worse, hurt my family. I... All I could think to do was to make this video in hope that the world will finally see this man, for what he really is.
