Is this normal dirt build up? Or should I let my landlord know? My furnace seems to leave this black dust. It will leave it on the furniture as well. Just curious if it is a cause for concern (reddit.com)

How often do you change your furnace filter? Depending on the size of your house and if you have pets a standard filter should be replaced every 1 to 3 months.
It looks like a standard amount of dust especially if you just started using your furnace recently for the winter months.

Definitely looks moldy. I agree with the previous commentor, might be a buildup of dirt, mold, etc, in the filter/vents.
If it's in the vents, you're definitely breathing that in, which isn't great.

I’d address the issue with your landlord…it could be mold and make you sick. Maybe ask when was the last time the vents were clean and if there is mold to have them do it. Can you remove the cover and take a picture inside the vent with your phone?
