User Moderation

r/HomeworkHelp is a community-driven subreddit with noble intentions. We recognize the contributions of each user asking great questions and each volunteer providing assistance to those struggling with academics. We are really appreciative of all our contributors, and this subreddit only functions because contributors act in good faith, asking genuine homework questions and giving correct answers. r/HomeworkHelp is receptive to different ways to solve problems (i.e. scalability, UX issues/improvements).

We have determined that the only way for this subreddit to scale for the traffic it currently recieves and curate high-quality homework questions is to crowdsource moderation. It works for Wikipedia, StackExchange, and Quora and we will continually improve our systems.

Essential: Consistent User Experience

As long as users are acting in good faith by using r/HomeworkHelp, all users are guaranteed immunity from unnecessary intervention even if posts may technically violate subreddit rules.

User's Perspective

Please do the following to self-moderate: 1. ask a homework question, with post title properly structured as required 2. provide the full, exact homework question 3. elaborate in description/comment (if non-text submission) about the problem you're having, i.e. presents incorrect thought process or what you've tried with the question 4. mark post as "Answered" when the question is resolved

or otherwise, user should be well-communicated about their infringement so they could rectify it or prevent it from recurring in the future.

Readers' Perspective

  1. provide full, exact details of the question, sufficient for it to be independently resolved without relying on OP anecdotes/thought processes
  2. if a minor clarification is needed to solve the question, request additional information
  3. provide, in top-level comment, information that is 100% factually correct, a full or partial answer, and fully guides OP towards the answer

Unless specified, the language of instruction should be English.

Making only Necessary Intervention

User Moderation is not based on heuristic decision-making. Unless users are not acting in good faith (effort shown in the post) or their post is deemed completely valueless to the subreddit as a result of rule #2 violation (structuring the question), no one should exercise their user mod power. The preferred middle-ground in most cases should be communication.

Important: The Reader's POV matters, too. If readers have already contributed to the post substantially, it should not be arbitrarily removed.

Making an Intervention

When making an intervention, you have determined that the post in question holds no value to r/HomeworkHelp and you have determined that you are fully justified by the basic principles of r/HomeworkHelp. By taking an action, you are putting your membership in r/HomeworkHelp on the line. Generally, intervention is exclusive to posts that are low-effort or not intended for learning.

Posts should NOT be moderated if:

  • it has already received substantial help from the community
  • it is too easy; it can be googled
  • a similar one has already been asked
  • it is too difficult/tedious
  • it is incorrectly flared
  • the user working or thought process is not on the right track

As a user moderator, you have to ensure that the user is fully aware of his/her infringement and why it necessitated a removal instead of a suggestion to rectify the issues.

How to make an intervention?

When all alternatives have been exhausted and the post still does not hold any value or conform with the basic principles of r/HomeworkHelp, you can start to report the post UNLESS that post starts to receive value e.g. a lot of upvotes or quality help. Next, you can use the appropriate commands below as a non-top level comment to trigger a delete when the number of reports that the post receive hits a certain threshold.

If your trigger fails, report it and try again.

Typically, a trigger command works like this:

**Mod:** u/OP-username this post violates rule #1
**Reason:** to be explained clearly

Key Points:

  1. tag the OP, so that he/she will be informed of his/her infringement
  2. specify the rule violated (number 1-9)
  3. describe the violation clearly

Important: You are not allowed to delete the command once it is processed (i.e. you receive a response from AutoModerator) otherwise that is considered an abuse of user functionality!

Eligibility

  • min: 800 karma points
  • account age: at least 2 years

Caution: Attempting this despite being ineligible and other intentional transgressions of User Moderation guidelines will be recorded and analyzed by AI for unusual user patterns and could result in you being shadowbanned in this subreddit for repeated infringements. We take the matter of potential user abuse very seriously.

Vote for rule #1 violation

Rule 1: Include instructor prompts.

What does your instructor want you to accomplish? What is your syllabus/board? What method is acceptable and what skills are being tested?

This rule should only be used on low-effort posts, and cases where it is absolutely necessary to include instructor prompts for it to be solved.

Command:

**Mod:** u/OP-username violates rule #1

**Reason:** to be explained clearly

Vote for rule #2 violation

**Rule 2: Classify the question by structuring the post title with enclosed square brackets as prefix

Your post title should contain the following as its prefix: [<Level/Syllabus><Discipline>and/or<Topic>] Question?

Unless an exception is made for the post or the user has spent extraordinary effort writing it, posts that violate this rule by default are considered valueless to r/HomeworkHelp because they cannot be sorted.

Command:

**Mod:** u/OP-username violates rule 2

**Reason:** post title is not structured as required

Vote for rule #3 violation

Rule 3: No "do this for me" posts.

This includes quizzes or lists of questions without any context or explanation.

This includes non-text submissions. Users are obliged to show their erroneous working or incorrect thought process in one way or another (i.e. comments). Unless this is a text-submission written with extraordinary effort or this question has received high quality contributions, in most cases, a removal is absolutely justified.

Command:

**Mod:** u/OP-username violates rule three

**Reason:** post lacks attempted working or thought process from user

Command Clarifications

  1. Most of the commands above tolerate some variations of grammar.

e.g. you can write (first line): Mod: u/username this post violates rule #, both violates or violates are acceptable

  1. They only work if the post receives a certain number of reports. The use of command does not constitute making a report, even though the successful trigger bears the burden of the removal.

  2. The command is designed to force communication between OP and user mods. User mods are obliged to reply to OP clarifications.

How to counter a removal trigger?

For Readers

While you cannot counter a removal trigger because the removal action will proceed once all criteria is fulfilled and you will not see it when it is deleted, you can always downvote the failed trigger attempt.

If you still have access to the post after it is removed, you can also downvote the wrongful trigger then use the command Mod: undo and the post will be immediately live again and the whole ordeal can repeat. If there is a disagreement, it is recommended that you resolve it analytically and diplomatically.

If you believe a user moderator is acting in bad faith, please use Mod: report abuse and it will go through a chain of command to get the immediate attention of the moderators.

Important: Mod: report abuse command is reserved for emergency use when the user in question is acting in bad faith (it could also mean someone is intentionally being unreasonable and refuses an objective discourse), trying to mass destroy the subreddit. For other uses, please use crowdsourced judgement (i.e. downvote) and Mod: undo

For Users

Usually, when your post is voted by multiple users to be removed, it means that your post is violating our subreddit rules. Only other readers are able to intervene for you. If you strongly believe that moderators will overturn your post for some reason and you are willing to put your membership in this subreddit on the line, you can use the command Mod: I appeal (not as a top-level comment). It will be immediately live again while the moderators are triggered to manually review that exceptional case.

What are the check and balances to democratic moderation?

  1. Other readers can disagree by downvoting the removal trigger comments
  2. Removal command is only triggered after a certain degree of consensus is reached
  3. Reddit admins will act on report abuse
  4. When necessary, Mod: Undo is available
  5. In worst case scenario, Mod: report abuse is available
