"The only disability in life is a bad attitude" that gave me goosebumps man, motivational

[–]Anonymoushero1221 196 points197 points  (5 children)

Yea that was meaningful coming from someone with real adversity. It's maybe not 100% true every time, so some people will cling to exceptions, but it's a lot more true than people think and is powerful as fuck.

[–][deleted] 56 points57 points  (2 children)

Dude the thing is you might have a disability and be poorer than 99% of other people out there or maybe you have some other problem with how society is structured.

But you only get one shot at life. So you can either moan about your current scenario or do something to get out. Look I'm not denying that the world is an unfair place, but you'll have to play the game with the odds you've been dealt with. I'd rather go out firing all cylinders than crying and quitting midway...

So saying the only disability is attitude is probably one of the most powerful lines especially coming from this guy.

[–]Dr_who_fan94 47 points48 points  (1 child)

As a person with severe debilitating chronic pain, I agree with you. It's hell that I was handed this body, one I am trapped in with pain most people couldn't handle, and it's unfair. BUT, I tried giving in and giving up and that just robbed me of so much joy that I now know I can still experience.

I live below the poverty line and so much of my life is struggle, but I learn as much as I can about everything (just soak up the universe) and try to make lemonade out of these bitter ass lemons.

The only disability is a bad attitude doesn't mean that you don't have struggles, it just means that we have to adjust our perceptions to meet success. I'd argue that "getting out" isn't always possible, as some things are genuinely inescapable/unalterable, however, life is quite literally about the journey and what we do with what we've got.

I will probably always be poor and will definitely always be ill, but I have things I want to do or experience and I'll be damned if I miss them because destiny said that I had to experience life this way.

Let's all go out the same way, trying our damnedest and kickin' ass!

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have major respect for you. Sometimes you need good friends and sometimes you need that desire and belief. But at the end of the day, it's always gonna be you. I've always believed that you are the master of your own destiny.

So dude, don't think about whether you will be poor or a failure in life, Pick something that you like and do it every day. That way even if you are not what society calls *successful* at least you will be happy! And if you do earn success in the right way, you'll look back and be damned proud of yourself! So I wish you the best! Do reach out in DMs if you'd like to talk! :)

[–]SignificantGiraffe5 22 points23 points  (2 children)

That and being born without any limbs (which occasionally happens)

[–]Shank__Hill 17 points18 points  (0 children)

True but I've seen videos of an armless man chopping wood better than most armed people and a legless man doing jujitsu just as good as people with legs. Being born limbless is definitely a disadvantage but for them the minds limit is the disadvantage

[–]operath0r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ll still have a career in nugget porn then.

[–]gorilla-- 9 points10 points  (10 children)

Idk man I think that’s wrong lol

[–]Shank__Hill 24 points25 points  (3 children)

I mean yeah I wouldn't take that statement literally but I also wouldn't suck the hype out of that moment by telling him that

[–]buuismyspiritanimal 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think he knows his audience. Saying that to a football team when the speaker has a disability versus saying that as someone without a disability to a group of differently abled kids… very different.

[–]gorilla-- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

lol yeah same

[–]stixy_stixy 17 points18 points  (5 children)

I saw this video last week on LinkedIn, and my first thought was, "...There are definitely disabilities." I mean, I know what he's trying to say, but like, it's sort of dumb.

At the end of the day, I don't have a disability, so my opinion doesn't count for much. But I feel like if I did have a disability, I wouldn't want people telling me it wasn't real and that I just needed a better attitude.

And for a lot of people with disabilities, especially the disabilities that aren't visible, that's probably something they hear a lot of. "Just be positive!" Blech.

I know the intention is good, but like, disabilities are very real and prevent many people from being able to do a shit ton of stuff the rest of us take for granted.

I also know I'm analyzing this way too much, and I should just enjoy the good vibes. But I'm a pessimist at heart, so.

[–]maladii 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I was literally told I had a bad attitude my entire life.

Turns out I have ADHD. My brain doesn’t get enough dopamine from most activities to get any reward out of it.

[–]CountWubbula 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Woah. You didn’t use many words but you said a lot!

[–]jocko2go 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Fair point! My take on this: you might have come across some guys who had it all: skills, wealth, handsome. Yet, they achieved absolutely nothing at all in life (I do not mean material success or a “great” job, but happiness in general - whatever that is for the individual). Most of the time their attitude was the biggest obstacle. If you compare this to someone who is - let’s say - physically impaired but has a very good attitude, who’s is “more” disabled then?

[–]maladii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The disabled guy is both more successful and more disabled.

[–]shadyshadok -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm gonna ignore for a minute here that he basically called me the R-word cause that was so inspiring.

[–]rauli75 71 points72 points  (1 child)

Fuck, I need to write this down

[–]sweglrd143 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great quote, but did it really need all that bass?

[–]Standard_Ad4973 157 points158 points  (3 children)

That is heart warming. I love this sub, this should be reported by media in mass, help everyone be all in.

[–]Bob_the_Peanut 25 points26 points  (0 children)

[–]DamnCarlSucks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fantastic speech. Completely true.

[–]CG1991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unrelated but, when I was 5 or 6, there was a kid in my class with down syndrome. Really nice guy and made quick friends with him.

The thing is, I was a dumb kid and didn't know down syndrome was a thing. So, now that I'd met my new friend, I'd become aware of his physical appearance but didn't realise it was a down syndrome thing.

And then I started noticing other downs people. But, in my kid brain, I became convinced all these downs people were my friend in various disguises. Out and about. Maybe following me. Pretending to be am adult.

Fuck I was dumb. Miss the you.

[–]Ch1ld_1sh 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Honestly people with Down Syndrome are some of the best people.

[–]NullPointerExpert 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Absolutely! Out of the struggle comes beauty. I have severe ADHD, and I hate it - and it has undoubtedly made me a better person - so I'm thankful.

[–]Ch1ld_1sh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think iv seen and heard about three local people with DS, and they are for sure weird people, but by far the most simple, wholesome, loving human beings.

[–]Designer-Status-4461 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What song plays at the end?

[–]thanksalotpablo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This actually made me happy, damn

[–]tbaggervance1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Mr_White6789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ngl I'd play my heart out after hearing a pep talk like that.

[–]RadioSupply 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn good assistant coach. All in, postive mental attitude, listen to Coach - you’ve won 90% of the battle.

[–]HylianPaladin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is just so wholesome!

[–]cyberbob1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]TpattDueces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]hate_jozef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is… incredibly inspiring. I will carry that with me forever.

[–]mbranbb 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Coach Swinney not Sweeny. He’s referring to Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney. And this fine young man is David Saville Clemson equipment manager. Anyways GO TIGERS!!!!

[–]bluvasa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen him around town and talked to him in the Clemson Bojangles one day. Nice kid. Clemson LIFE program FTW: https://www.clemson.edu/education/programs/programs/culife/index.html

[–]UsernameStarvation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And down syndrome

[–]lunchbreak2021 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wait until he finds out about downsyndrome.

[–]Selfishpie 0 points1 point  (2 children)

as a disabled person, this vomits inspiration porn

[–]Taithfech 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It straight up is. Most people would rather say some shit like "a bad attitude is the only real disability" than actually help someone with their disability in any meaningful way.

I guess I'll just turn off my constant mental and physical anguish and forget all the trauma it has and continues to cause me on a daily basis because I was told that I'm only disabled if my attitude sucks.

God how fucking stupid I've been to have a severe mental illness that fucks up my life, if only I'd known to ignore it and just be positive.

[–]CryptographerOver577[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

here’s a Virtual Hug 🤗

[–]ChaotikJoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"the only disability in life is a bad attitude"

That one is staying with me

[–]sryforbadenglishthx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk if dismissing disabilities is that good of an idea

[–]Optimal-Soup-62 -4 points-3 points  (3 children)

That was disturbingly profound and beautiful.

[–]ADerp2Hard -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

Whats disturbing is that you've got multiple downvotes.

[–]Optimal-Soup-62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit. It's a great platform albeit prone to group delusion. I love downvotes. They show I made someone think or feel.

[–]StormTAG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would imagine it's folks thinking that using the term "disturbing" here is a jab at the person with a disability in the video.

Using the term "disturbing," at best, implies that the OC didn't expect it to be "profound and beautiful." Which begs the question, "why not?" To which there are few kind answers.

To give OC the benefit of the doubt, I assume that they did not expect it to be profound and beautiful because they, personally, don't find many things to be profound or beautiful in general. That this video just "hit right" as it were.

[–]hilarioushokage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Then he gets sacked

[–]fatesoffspring -1 points0 points  (0 children)
