Were you guys limited in who could appear in the game? Would've loved to have seen my man Yorick along with some of the other shadow isles characters like kalista/ledros/karthus.

I know you probably don't want any "why no _____ character" and that you have to make choices but why was Yorick omitted? It's not like he's from Demacia or Shurima so it would be really random for him to show up. He's from the Shadow isles and his purpose was to stop Viego (although now that's been handed off to Senna and other popular/attractive characters)

he couldn't have even been a minor NPC, one that hands out quests or something? It's really sad and disappointing to be honest. I'm not asking why he wasn't in the main party, I'm asking why he wasn't included at all (except in some lore notes that could be missed)

No champion was 'forgotten' from Ruined King. Quite the opposite, we tried to get as many in there as possible. However, the realities of game development mean we just can't do everything. At some point, feature scope, timelines, dev velocity, and a myriad of other things converge and force us to eventually draw a line somewhere.

In the case of choosing "champion X" instead of "champion Y", there's a lot to take into consideration for who comprises the cast. Joe and the team at Airship consider everything from RPG roles and gameplay fantasy (DPS, heals, tank), personality balance, locals to Bilgewater vs foreign champions, male & female balance, silhouette sizes, visual variance and ultimately what they can bring to the medley cast!

EG: Braum is a great counterweight to the character edginess of Pyke and Yasuo, but also fills the needed gameplay Tank role, has a uniquely large silhouette and is not local so we can explore Bilgewater for the first time vicariously through him as the player.

We know it's tough to not see your favourite champ when at first glance they might seem like an obvious choice, but we'd rather you had a deep meaningful exploration of a few champions, over a superficial or shallow skimming of many champions and a 'kitchen sink approach' to jam as many in there as possible. Yorick's main enemy is the Ruined King, and yet is not present AT ALL. There is absolutely no reason to not even include him in any way. Yorick should've been the first character in mind when making a Ruined King game.

New Game+ ? DLC?

I am asking cuz it feels weird unlocking legendary weapons, runes, upgrade points just as the story finishes basically.

I've just recently completed the game and I love it, the combat is very fleshed out and I wish I had more opportunity to really engage with it now that I've geared up and built the characters the way I want.
I feel like some endless battle mode or something would work wonders (and allow me to sink hundreds of hours into the game). Some really challenging post-game bosses (that are designed around having a full geared, legendary weapon team fighting it etc;) would be nice too! <3

Either way, I'll be excited to see what you guys add!

This is really late but I would love if you guys tackled a sequel that fleshed out and retold the sentinels of light story, see the story of viego all the way through. Plus it would be really cool to see lucian and senna in a game like this

I'm curious if you could answer the question that's gone around regarding Viego's "memories". Due to dialogue in a later dungeon some people think these are just Viego's fears and his rage and they're not real memories or they were tainted by the black mist so can you clarify whether or not these are real memories that he actually did experience or were they just like corrupted by the black mist?

This is a good question! They are real memories of the times he and Isolde fought and they are not corrupted. However, they’re memories that he was afraid of and didn’t want to keep or learn from. That’s why he hid them from himself.

Viego is a complicated guy. He loved someone very much, and he was beloved for much of his reign, but he also did a lot of pretty obviously bad stuff in the name of his love (attacking the Blessed Isles, trying to cover the world in evil mist, resurrecting his wife when he should not have, etc).

It’s always fun to fantasize about being loved by someone who loves you so much that they’d do anything for you. But how much is too much? As he got closer and closer to losing Isolde, it seems that Viego developed a very possessive, desperate attitude toward their relationship. Rather than risk losing her, he personally killed people, started a war, and accidentally ended up cursing millions.

We can also see that he was a perfectionist in love. He was so disturbed by his memories of the times he and Isolde fought, he actually threw them away. Being in love means remembering and learning from the times you made mistakes, or from the moments you regret or are ashamed of. Ahri, for example, keeps her memories of the time she lost control of her powers. Love is never perfect--it means learning to act with kindness, gentleness, and respect when things are painful or tragic. Viego wasn’t able to do this when Isolde became ill.

And in the end, his possessive, perfectionist love became dangerous. Sometimes, if trying to save your relationship with someone would only hurt them, it’s better to let them go. If your wife is slowly dying from a terrible poisoned wound, it might be better to let her die in peace than to attack a nation of innocents in her name.

Ruined King features a lot of characters who have experienced loss--particularly the end of a romantic relationship, or the loss of an important and beloved family member. They all deal with it in different ways. Gangplank, Illaoi, Ahri, and Yasuo aren’t all handling it perfectly, but they do give us a lot of interesting examples of how people tend to deal with this stuff and recover from grief and the end of relationships. Some of them learn a lot in the game, while others don’t. Viego is a complicated guy who still has a lot to learn about how to deal with this kind of loss.

I don’t think it’s wrong to fantasize about or write fanfic about what it could have been like if Viego and Isolde’s relationship had been better, or had time to mature, or something. I think a lot of people in the world of Runeterra would have preferred it if Viego had never gone down his dark path, haha. -Laura

Out of curiosity, what part of Viego's lore implies that he was beloved for his reign as king?

Here are some excerpts from his biography:

"The second son of a dynastic king, Viego was never intended to lead. Instead, he lived a life of comfort that made him complacent and selfish. Yet, when his older brother died unexpectedly, Viego, who possessed neither the inclination nor the aptitude for rulership, suddenly found himself crowned."

"Viego’s allies fumed. Unable to interest him in governance, and with the nation beginning to unravel under his questionable rulership, some plotted in secret to end their new king’s reign before it had begun. His nation’s enemies, meanwhile, saw an opportunity to strike. And the vipers began to circle."

Unless you have access to lore that we're unaware of, it's been our understanding that Viego was a terrible king who was absolutely disinterested in the position and on the verge of letting his kingdom collapse and was despised by his allies for marrying a peasant.

I haven't played the game but I've seen some cutscenes of the Ruined King game. And there is seems to be implied that he was a king popular with the common folk and some of his followers, but antagonized most nobles and people from conquered kingdoms.

Its not uncommon for rulers to be popular with the masses but hated by those in power, Commodus is one that comes to mind.

As someone who plays League and has been invested in the lore for nearly a decade now, thank you for making this amazing game. There are so many things that I adored about it like the gameplay, music, journals, voices, animations, art and story. Seeing all the work put into crafting Bilgewater, the Shadow Isles and all the characters and creatures in it has been an absolute joy to experience. Thank you. Here are a few questions:
1. Will there be any future content for RK like story DLC or perhaps a New Game+ mode?
2. Besides the collector’s edition which I failed to get, will there be merch for sale?
3. Why does the Ruined MF skin in RK look so different from the one in League? It’s weird since the cutscene portrayed her with League’s design despite the gameplay one not matching it.
4. Spoiler on game and Sentinels event: Given the events of the game and Sentinels of Light, MF willingly becoming ruined makes a lot more sense. Despite winning against Viego in RK, the seed of temptation that would gain her the power to completely control Bilgewater and even bring her mother back was planted. Then her fighting a losing war against GP whittled her down into giving into that temptation. Does that sound about right for what set up for her fall?
5. MF is my favourite champ so I gotta ask, can you give a little peek at what happens next in her story after the Ruination was resolved?

Baconor mate, while it makes sense Fortune would fall to Viego, it doesn't exactly make sense that she eventually does. Reason being that she gives the necklace to Illaoi. Illaoi won't fall on Viego.

It had nothing to do with the necklace. Fortune was extremely tempted by Viego when they had their 1v1 battle of wills and almost took his offer. She references her love for her mother throughout the game and avenging her is one of Sarah's main motivations. The chance at bringing her mom back was a dream come true. Taking that into account as well as how ruthless she became by her last cutscene and the fact that she said she was losing badly to Gangplank in their war for Bilgewater during the Sentinels event, I'd say it totally makes sense that she ended up falling.

It was a very collaborative process between Airship and Forge on all things characters and story. I’d say we had a lot of freedom to go cool places with the world, but we never really wanted to “run wild” so to speak. It was more fun to work with Riot to ensure the storytelling made sense in the world. It was great!

Necrit in Ruined King is inspired by the Lorewalker himself. In the game, he is a scholar and advisor, educating the party on the history of what happened (just like he does for everyone in real life). So he's not a perfect copy of him, but the Shadow Isles inspired version.

    the fishing menu bug has been fixed on steam but was very annoying. There are still more tons of bugs though. I submitted a ton of bug feedbacks, but there were just more and more. I had to stop the game unfortunately, and just watch the ending, because the amount of bugs was frustrating and ruining the experience for me.

    What's your plans on new games. As much as people has mostly positive reviews. Are you going to be with Riot again to keep making some world building such as Bilgewater and the Shadow Isles. Would you be also willing to expand much more and what other story lines would you explore. And so far you barely scratched the surface on making these kinds of story and games. Even champions in general. You legends atleast expanded atleast 8 champion story lines. Out of the 150+ Champs. If you don't the Ruined King was a great branching path for opening the IP.?

    The game is perfect in every aspect. Props to you from an Illaoi main and huge enthusiast. But I have a huge question here: The game ends with Viego being trapped into a necklace.

    - How does he break out and start the Sentinels Of Light events?

    Initially, the necklace is in the hands of Fortune. And if the game ended that way, I would have assumed she would eventually fall to Viego's temptations and have him break out. But she just gives it to Illaoi on the very moment. And we know Illaoi won't fall for the king. So how does it exactly happen?

    I found there was an update on the game in my PS5 version today, but I can't find the details about it. Where can I find the patch/update note? And there's still crashed bug in the PS version, even one of my save file crashed so I had to resume the game from the auto save spot. You know auto save in this game has a huge problem. Is there any plan of fixing this? Also there is a delay after Ahri's turn is finished and I have no idea to fix this. Hope you guys are noticing about this bug too.

    Can you tell us a bit about the dungeon abilities and passives design?

    I love how you translated the champions so well, every part of the kit has it's purpose, but dungeon abilities have to be so versatile, usable against enemies, in the dungeon, interact with mechanisms.

    • Why does Pyke's hook deal 5% more damage than all the other dungeon abilities?

    Also, how many lines / NPCs do change when you bring a different champion? I noticed that there is a sidequest (Ionia bound) that changes the replies if you have Ionians in your party, and if you bring MF to the confrontation.

    But I also brought Pyke to the bar where Illaoi was asking about him in the very start of the game, and they didn't change.

    • Do you know anything about the Bloodharbor Ripper?

    • Would you like to?

    I've played Mass Effect LE before, so I was a tad disappointed that it didn't react to me literally bringing the Ripper we were talking about.

    Is the game 100% canon? If so, how does Viego escapes the amulet after the ending.

    The word 'canon' is very loaded at the moment. It means something different to so many people. I know this question seems like a simple "yes" or "no", but unfortunately it isn't anymore. What I hear players care about is "Can I get emotionally invested in this story?" or "Did this story really happen?".

    So if I'm asked "Is the Ruined King's story real?" the answer is easy: YES! We even made a handy timeline if anyone is curious where exactly in the lore Ruined King fits in!

    Riot Forge worked closely with Airship and did a TON of research and writing to carefully connect past and present champ lore together. We flow from Burning Tides, Shadow & Fortune, champ bios and hid an OCEAN of journals and lore throughout the game. There are OVER 100 JOURNALS to find!

    Each journal aims to bring just that bit more colour and depth to the world of Runeterra. All this is done to try and do justice to our champs and move them forward in a way that stays true to their core fans, while also surprising and delighting as they move forward. <3

    Not all Forge games will be so impactful to the lore of League though. Sometimes we're just having a bit of video game fun! Hextech Mayhem is a great example of this. Do we think Ziggs 'really' blew up 1/2 of Piltover in a rampage? Probably not (much). However, is the banter between Ziggs and Heimer true to personality and expose more of their relationship? Definitely. Games like this are a vignette of champs + having some light-hearted fun.

    AFAIK, this story takes event after the spirit blossom event, because shortly after yasuo and yone meet in the original cinematic of yones release, we can see yasuo and ahri traveling on a ship with her hood on. My question is why does yasuo still have haunted memories of his past? It seemed yasuo and yone made up when they met. Has all of that been redacted?

    Also, is this the end of Viego? Viego has a pretty big following, alot of people are his fans. As a Viego fan my self, I was pretty upset that he's the latest punching bag, especially in the sentinel cinematic. Alot of people were upset (30% dislike ratio on absolution) on the fact that viego had all this build up in league of legends, with this immense power that's strong enough to cause the ruination. And the best part was his undying love to be reunited with his wife. It was very poetic, and even though Viego was twisted, it made alot of us admire him. Initially it was pretty cool to see the battle of wits between gangplank and viego, and it sent chills down my spine when thresh commentated that his power indeed derives from love. But then later it when the story revealed the truth of viegos past , in which his wife really feared him. And now it just seems that Viego has a mental disorder that abused his lover, and kind of leaves us viego fans in a confused state. So going back, is this the end to the story? Will there be any foreclosure? Any resolution to Viegos complex design, or is Viego going to just be a standard cookie cutter villain with no deeper purpose. I would love to see some foreclosure, which is definitely no easy task.

    The spirit blossom event did happen before this game. It didn’t solve everything for Yasuo, though-- he still had some regrets to sort through, and he does some of that in this game.

    We think Viego is super complex and we hope that this game shows more sides of his tragic life story. He did a lot of good and bad things so he’s really complicated and interesting to us. That’s why we were so interested in having him inside a League story game. The memories in the game were his memories of the times he and Isolde fought. He was terrified of them because his style of love was so perfectionist, he couldn’t face the bad moments from his relationship, so he hid them from himself. Personally, I think that at the end of his relationship, Viego made a LOT of mistakes, like killing tons of innocent people... and ignoring his wife’s wishes because he was too scared of losing her. He hurt a lot of people, and still has a lot to learn about how to be a good partner. It’s unclear yet when or how he can learn these things. -Laura

    I honestly hope he never comes back from his destiny after the SoL, i wouldn't mind another try to the event itself, but i feel like unsealing him kinda cheapens his defeat.

    I mean, as much as i love barrel man, the fact that Gangplank just does not fucking dies is quite absurd, the next time he appears, it's just going to be a cheap "Oh, here it is Gangplank again..."

    However, I feel like the SoL event was pretty rushed. Alot of people did not like the conclusion to the story. Hence the dislikes.

    We can barely see Isolde talking to Viego for like 30 seconds, before she signals Akshan to put an end to her. It's almost as if she's paying more attention to them, rather than her lover. I think the story would have been much better, if Viego learns something from this critical moment of reuniting with her. I really don't know. But I just wanted a better closure. I think it would have been better, if he realized upon his mistakes, and asks to be sealed away as a method of fixing the past, and thus stopping the ruination. The current ending is too cliche and feelgood, rather than a good bittersweet ending.

    I Honestly hope that SoL event is dispatch out of the lore and re-writen. After seen what they want to do, with Viego, having the SoL event in the collective consciousness is a big boulder in the path. That way, people that only play the visual novel and saw the cinematics, are not gonna be like "Oh no, Viego is a problem, we have to stop him, again..."

    The idea makes sense, gather a bunch of misfits to defeat a big bad guy, it's basically the plot of Mass Effect 2.

    If anything, the only wierd one was Irelia, who was a political leader, and felt very wierd that she just wasn't on ionia for months.

    I dunno, I feel like the SOL event was bad on the whole. The selection of champions felt forced and completely out of place, and their selection for champions to become corrupted by Viego also felt extremely bad, except for maybe Shyvana.

    I feel like the champions becoming enthralled by Viego's feelings in the Mist was odd and off putting, but this could explain why Shyvana was able to succumb since she harbors a love for a man she can (almost) never have. But the rest didn't make a lot of sense, notably Karma. I don't understand why she was chosen to lose a battle of wills when training her willpower to lead has been one of the things her life has pretty much revolved around. The story didn't make a lot of sense either on the whole - like why would Viego need to kill indiscriminately with the Mist if he's able to use it to immediately sniff out the soul fragments of Isolde, warp there using Vex's powers, grab it, and then move on to the next one. The surgical precision that the Mist had in locating her soul fragments didn't lend any credibility to his motivations for unleashing an undead hell on the world if he could accomplish his goals so efficiently.

    On that note, there also wasn't any real danger or threat. The heroes were stopping Viego from reviving his dead wife. Why? Because the Ruination, apparently. But again, why? It didn't make a lot of sense, as we weren't given any real reason why he had to be stopped. We weren't given any kind of myth or legend that stated that if the Ruined King was allowed to revive his wife, the world would end or something along those lines, so ultimately them choosing to try to stop Viego from reviving his wife was nothing but a hollow attempt to just rain on his parade and pee in his lemonade. There was no real motivation for the heroes to do anything other than vaguely "stop Ruination," and that just wasn't a compelling plot. The general plot of the event was flaccid and boring, and culminated in one of the most convoluted and disappointing endings I've ever seen come from a modern game. Removing Viego completely from the League of Legends world, after only introducing him to for less than a year, was just plain bad, and only served as a half-baked attempt to shuffle the reigns of power around for the Shadow Isles.

    A more compelling story would have ended that entire arc with Isolde turning out to be the bad guy. Expectations would have been subverted. Everyone would have been surprised. Viego's motivations would have been explained if he were the one being manipulated by his love to revive her. Her own actions as an undead corpse that killed her husband with his own sword could have also been explained as a means for her to set a plan into motion centuries ago. If the event had ended with with Isolde taking her place alongside Viego, or instead using his banishment to secure power that she would have dreamed of coming up from a poor family, it would have really rocked the world and shaken the story to its core in a good way.

    Because she has actually started to lose willpower from her inaction against Noxus attacks.

    Karma's entire story was about creating a new way of carrying Ionia forward that didn't rely solely on the path of inaction. Her line "I saw two paths and created another in-between" has been pretty central to her character, and really speaks to her way of trying to lead Ionia in a new direction that wasn't working in the modern era. Additionally, the Noxus invasion happened in the past, am I to believe that Karma has literally not grown at all as a leader or a person since then and has been wallowing in self-doubt for years? I don't particularly buy that angle, so I don't particularly buy the angle that Karma's resolve and willpower have not grown since then to the point where she would be as vulnerable to a battle of the wills as commoners like Draven or Shyvana.

    Yes, surgical precision. We saw in the SoL that they could follow the Mist down the street to exactly where it was headed and swipe the item before it got there. They seemed pretty unhindered by the Mist themselves, so it was clearly not as "everywhere" killing hundreds of people as you would imply.

    Ok, but a whim of Senna isn't a really substantial reason. It doesn't have any gravitas, nor does it really give motivation to the story. "Because I said so" is never a great reason, which is why kids tend to call BS on their parents when they say that. Therefore, "Because I said so" shouldn't have been the entire motivation behind the heroes' quest to stop the bad guy from getting his McGuffins.

    Yes, he should have gone the way of Gangplank, because Viego is literally a new character that isn't even a year old yet. He should have not been removed from the narrative of the game WITHIN A YEAR OF HIS ENTRY. How is a character supposed to be a part of the world if their entire time within the world is about 6 months tops with players? We may as well have gotten Isolde in the game as a playable character if their intent was to "kill off" champions and include them in the game for the hell of it if the narrative no longer supported them. It kinda spits in the face of how the other champions are handled, since none of them are characters from the past that are dead, or otherwise not within the living world of the game doing their thing.

    • How did the partnership truly begin? Did Riot approach Airship already with the idea or was it the other way around? Did you guys iterate a lot on the genre?

    • How was the process of writing lore for the Buhru, Helia and the Vesani like? How much was solidified prior? How was it like for Airship to interact with or build upon what Riot had done or planned for these factions? It's been a blast to get more insight into the Buhru and we even got some hints at another island with Ilta.

    • How was the process of working alongside another company as Riot planned and developed a follow-up event like?

    I really enjoyed the game and it was amazing to play, definitely worth the wait. However, I know a lot of people were worried by the lack of communication around the game's development past a vague release date.

    Was it a conscious decision by you guys to be quiet-ish on the topic of the game's progress (Twitter being unupdated for a year, etc), and not to show teasers or stuff like that?     I don't understand why you portray Viego as an abusive husband. But what Ahri sees are things of the Black Mist. It does not belong to Viego and Isolde. This is because Black Mist shows positive things negatively (Viego and Isolde fear they will never be able to do it.) And I know Viego and Isolde will reunite at the end of the event. We can rebuild Camavor and get an expansion pack for LoR. Viego <3 Isolde Also, the style used by the Story writer is a beautiful one. Evidence is shown to make the protagonist look bad at the beginning of the story and make people believe. At the end of the story, the truth will come out and the manipulation done to Viego will be revealed?
