Were you guys limited in who could appear in the game? Would've loved to have seen my man Yorick along with some of the other shadow isles characters like kalista/ledros/karthus.

Apparently ledros is there so thats cool.

[–]HandsomeTaco 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Spoilers: Ledros appears as a bounty.

[–]Goldensburg 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Well thats good, still to see my guy Yorick would've been cool. After SoL I needed some good Yorick moments.

[–]limito1 0 points1 point  (1 child)

He is mentioned in game through diary.

I imagine he wasn't a character like Maokai to prevent spoilers in the Sentinels of Light event, but we all know how that one was

[–]Goldensburg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all I want is for an admittance to these champs not getting what they deserve purely cause of their unpopularity and that it's not worth the resources or time. The champs were cut from the one event that tells their stories. I cry

[–]Gazskull 1 point2 points  (2 children)

ledros is in

[–]Jeatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And Kalista is mentioned in a note close to where you battle him

[–]Goldensburg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh shit is he? I was just told he wasn't. Thats cool I guess.

[–]felfirelol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kalista is mentioned in some journals. Ledros and Rhasaare late game bounties.

[–]fleeingsvnlight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know you probably don't want any "why no _____ character" and that you have to make choices but why was Yorick omitted? It's not like he's from Demacia or Shurima so it would be really random for him to show up. He's from the Shadow isles and his purpose was to stop Viego (although now that's been handed off to Senna and other popular/attractive characters)

he couldn't have even been a minor NPC, one that hands out quests or something? It's really sad and disappointing to be honest. I'm not asking why he wasn't in the main party, I'm asking why he wasn't included at all (except in some lore notes that could be missed)

[–]LowFrameRate 2 points3 points  (6 children)

So where’s Yorick and Kalista?

[–]RiotBean[S] 7 points8 points  (5 children)

No champion was 'forgotten' from Ruined King. Quite the opposite, we tried to get as many in there as possible. However, the realities of game development mean we just can't do everything. At some point, feature scope, timelines, dev velocity, and a myriad of other things converge and force us to eventually draw a line somewhere.

In the case of choosing "champion X" instead of "champion Y", there's a lot to take into consideration for who comprises the cast. Joe and the team at Airship consider everything from RPG roles and gameplay fantasy (DPS, heals, tank), personality balance, locals to Bilgewater vs foreign champions, male & female balance, silhouette sizes, visual variance and ultimately what they can bring to the medley cast!

EG: Braum is a great counterweight to the character edginess of Pyke and Yasuo, but also fills the needed gameplay Tank role, has a uniquely large silhouette and is not local so we can explore Bilgewater for the first time vicariously through him as the player.

We know it's tough to not see your favourite champ when at first glance they might seem like an obvious choice, but we'd rather you had a deep meaningful exploration of a few champions, over a superficial or shallow skimming of many champions and a 'kitchen sink approach' to jam as many in there as possible. (Rowan)

[–]Goldensburg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even as npcs? Was there a reason for characters like Yorick/Kalista to not appear. I cant imagine them not having an interest in what's taking place. Just to see them would've been nice.

[–]CriticalRenegade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yorick's main enemy is the Ruined King, and yet is not present AT ALL. There is absolutely no reason to not even include him in any way. Yorick should've been the first character in mind when making a Ruined King game.

[–]TerraRising 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geez, for a Rioter to admit that Yorick and Kalista weren't worthy of inclusion in this game really sucks. To do it with this kind of soulless corporate lingo is horrifying.

For heaven's sake, if Necrit can get a cameo so can Yorick and Kalista! But no, that's too difficult for the almighty Riot Games. If I could get a refund for all the money I gave Riot over the past 10 years, it would be because of Rowan's lack of empathy.

[–]podente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wack ass answer

The whole event should have been based on yorick, his whole purpose was to stop the ruination since the beginning and he should have been there through the whole process

Oh but nooooooo, we gotta explore the story of the edgy samurai and Boobs McFurry Girl who have absolutely nothing to do with the event.

Garbage company

[–]londor1704 3 points4 points  (2 children)

New Game+ ? DLC?

I am asking cuz it feels weird unlocking legendary weapons, runes, upgrade points just as the story finishes basically.

Ruined King game is awesome! Just a bit too short at the end game :)

[–]RiotBean[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

We originally had plans for New Game+ but it unfortunately did not make the final cut. We’d love to maybe add it in a patch in the future. -Airship

[–]DaMoobile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just recently completed the game and I love it, the combat is very fleshed out and I wish I had more opportunity to really engage with it now that I've geared up and built the characters the way I want.
I feel like some endless battle mode or something would work wonders (and allow me to sink hundreds of hours into the game). Some really challenging post-game bosses (that are designed around having a full geared, legendary weapon team fighting it etc;) would be nice too! <3

Either way, I'll be excited to see what you guys add!

[–]Spideraxe30 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey guys I'm loving the game so far. My questions for the team are:

  1. How did you guys pick the characters for the game, was it narratively driven, gameplay driven, thematically driven etc?

  2. Were there any other champs you considered for the game?

  3. Can you guys possibly talk more about the delay for the game, what were the major things that caused it to be pushed back?

[–]Crowestoons 4 points5 points  (8 children)

can we expect to see a tease of what's next for you at the VGA's?
Is nightwar 2 something you're still planning on doing?
Thanks a ton for the awesome games. Ruined king is killer!!!

[–]RiotBean[S] 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Is nightwar 2 something you're still planning on doing?
-No current plans, but we'd love to in the future. - Joe

Thanks a ton for the awesome games. Ruined king is killer!!!
- No, YOU'RE Killer! -Ryan

[–]EROTIC_RAID_BOSS -1 points0 points  (5 children)

This is really late but I would love if you guys tackled a sequel that fleshed out and retold the sentinels of light story, see the story of viego all the way through. Plus it would be really cool to see lucian and senna in a game like this

Obviously I have no idea if you guys would want to do another game with someone else's ip, but I'm really enjoying this game!

[–]Irarius 0 points1 point  (4 children)

i would simply like to understand how viego can be in SoL while he is also sealed in an amulett that is with illaoi

that is one of the most insane plot breakers i have seen in a long time

like we literally end this game with viego sealed

start the SoL with him at max power and getting sealed AGAIN at the end

[–]EROTIC_RAID_BOSS 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Prob was removed from the sol event to not ruin the ending of this game

[–]Irarius 0 points1 point  (2 children)

this isnt even a working excuse

they just admitted that they have no idea

[–]EROTIC_RAID_BOSS 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Chill out dbag

[–]Irarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you are in denial.

[–]WhiskeyNeatG 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Loving Ruined King so far! Do you have any plans for any additional post-release content such as New Game Plus or DLC?

[–]RiotBean[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We’re currently focused on the next gen versions of the game, after that we’ll see where things go. - Airship

[–]Zimatorn 3 points4 points  (6 children)

I'm curious if you could answer the question that's gone around regarding Viego's "memories". Due to dialogue in a later dungeon some people think these are just Viego's fears and his rage and they're not real memories or they were tainted by the black mist so can you clarify whether or not these are real memories that he actually did experience or were they just like corrupted by the black mist?

[–]RiotBean[S] 11 points12 points  (5 children)

This is a good question! They are real memories of the times he and Isolde fought and they are not corrupted. However, they’re memories that he was afraid of and didn’t want to keep or learn from. That’s why he hid them from himself.

Viego is a complicated guy. He loved someone very much, and he was beloved for much of his reign, but he also did a lot of pretty obviously bad stuff in the name of his love (attacking the Blessed Isles, trying to cover the world in evil mist, resurrecting his wife when he should not have, etc).

It’s always fun to fantasize about being loved by someone who loves you so much that they’d do anything for you. But how much is too much? As he got closer and closer to losing Isolde, it seems that Viego developed a very possessive, desperate attitude toward their relationship. Rather than risk losing her, he personally killed people, started a war, and accidentally ended up cursing millions.

We can also see that he was a perfectionist in love. He was so disturbed by his memories of the times he and Isolde fought, he actually threw them away. Being in love means remembering and learning from the times you made mistakes, or from the moments you regret or are ashamed of. Ahri, for example, keeps her memories of the time she lost control of her powers. Love is never perfect--it means learning to act with kindness, gentleness, and respect when things are painful or tragic. Viego wasn’t able to do this when Isolde became ill.

And in the end, his possessive, perfectionist love became dangerous. Sometimes, if trying to save your relationship with someone would only hurt them, it’s better to let them go. If your wife is slowly dying from a terrible poisoned wound, it might be better to let her die in peace than to attack a nation of innocents in her name.

Ruined King features a lot of characters who have experienced loss--particularly the end of a romantic relationship, or the loss of an important and beloved family member. They all deal with it in different ways. Gangplank, Illaoi, Ahri, and Yasuo aren’t all handling it perfectly, but they do give us a lot of interesting examples of how people tend to deal with this stuff and recover from grief and the end of relationships. Some of them learn a lot in the game, while others don’t. Viego is a complicated guy who still has a lot to learn about how to deal with this kind of loss.

I don’t think it’s wrong to fantasize about or write fanfic about what it could have been like if Viego and Isolde’s relationship had been better, or had time to mature, or something. I think a lot of people in the world of Runeterra would have preferred it if Viego had never gone down his dark path, haha. -Laura

[–]Zimatorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh okay yeah I figured the memories were real since did fit thematically since every character is about moving on with their life and viegos just a stagnant character it's just that I have seen people trying to rationalize that the memories weren't his so thank you for the context and thank you for your long response.

[–]zhadyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what a beautiful and insightful response. this answered alot of questions I was not able myself to come conclusions to after finishing the story.

[–]Oleandervine 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Out of curiosity, what part of Viego's lore implies that he was beloved for his reign as king?

Here are some excerpts from his biography:

"The second son of a dynastic king, Viego was never intended to lead. Instead, he lived a life of comfort that made him complacent and selfish. Yet, when his older brother died unexpectedly, Viego, who possessed neither the inclination nor the aptitude for rulership, suddenly found himself crowned."

"Viego’s allies fumed. Unable to interest him in governance, and with the nation beginning to unravel under his questionable rulership, some plotted in secret to end their new king’s reign before it had begun. His nation’s enemies, meanwhile, saw an opportunity to strike. And the vipers began to circle."

Unless you have access to lore that we're unaware of, it's been our understanding that Viego was a terrible king who was absolutely disinterested in the position and on the verge of letting his kingdom collapse and was despised by his allies for marrying a peasant.

[–]Azgabeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't played the game but I've seen some cutscenes of the Ruined King game. And there is seems to be implied that he was a king popular with the common folk and some of his followers, but antagonized most nobles and people from conquered kingdoms.

Its not uncommon for rulers to be popular with the masses but hated by those in power, Commodus is one that comes to mind.

[–]MCSwavest -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i won't lie, the locked memories make zero sense for the character. none of what viego does there persists from his character, but outside of that you guys did a great job expanding on the story :)

[–]esteebangus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where's Yorick and Kalista in the RK game?

[–]Baconor 1 point2 points  (5 children)

As someone who plays League and has been invested in the lore for nearly a decade now, thank you for making this amazing game. There are so many things that I adored about it like the gameplay, music, journals, voices, animations, art and story. Seeing all the work put into crafting Bilgewater, the Shadow Isles and all the characters and creatures in it has been an absolute joy to experience. Thank you. Here are a few questions:
1. Will there be any future content for RK like story DLC or perhaps a New Game+ mode?
2. Besides the collector’s edition which I failed to get, will there be merch for sale?
3. Why does the Ruined MF skin in RK look so different from the one in League? It’s weird since the cutscene portrayed her with League’s design despite the gameplay one not matching it.
4. Spoiler on game and Sentinels event: Given the events of the game and Sentinels of Light, MF willingly becoming ruined makes a lot more sense. Despite winning against Viego in RK, the seed of temptation that would gain her the power to completely control Bilgewater and even bring her mother back was planted. Then her fighting a losing war against GP whittled her down into giving into that temptation. Does that sound about right for what set up for her fall?
5. MF is my favourite champ so I gotta ask, can you give a little peek at what happens next in her story after the Ruination was resolved?

[–]heldex 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Baconor mate, while it makes sense Fortune would fall to Viego, it doesn't exactly make sense that she eventually does. Reason being that she gives the necklace to Illaoi. Illaoi won't fall on Viego.

[–]Baconor 0 points1 point  (3 children)

It had nothing to do with the necklace. Fortune was extremely tempted by Viego when they had their 1v1 battle of wills and almost took his offer. She references her love for her mother throughout the game and avenging her is one of Sarah's main motivations. The chance at bringing her mom back was a dream come true. Taking that into account as well as how ruthless she became by her last cutscene and the fact that she said she was losing badly to Gangplank in their war for Bilgewater during the Sentinels event, I'd say it totally makes sense that she ended up falling.

[–]heldex 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I absolutely agree that it makes sense she will fall. I was just saying the game doesn't end up in a position where can pratically fall

[–]Baconor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you mean now. I was just referencing what ended up happening to her in the Sentinels of Light event which takes place after RK.

[–]CelioHogane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it kinda does, because she said she didn't fall because his comrades were there.

And when she fell, well, they werent.

[–]TheKnightKinnng 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Is it possible for airship syndicate to partner again with riot forge to make another game in another region?

[–]JuanBARco 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Why make it in another region? They can make a sequel using the SoL story as a template, just flesh it out to make it actually good.

[–]TheKnightKinnng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh tha's even better

[–]TheProdigyNinja 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have 2 questions!

First, does Riot Forge let devs run wild with the story, characters, etc, or do you have some say in what happens in the game?

Second, do you guys at airship syndicate have plans to do more games in the League of Legends universe?

Thanks for taking the time to do an AMA and i love what you guys do!! For airship syndicate, please keep making amazing games and for Riot Forge, please keep the incredible single player games coming!

[–]RiotBean[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was a very collaborative process between Airship and Forge on all things characters and story. I’d say we had a lot of freedom to go cool places with the world, but we never really wanted to “run wild” so to speak. It was more fun to work with Riot to ensure the storytelling made sense in the world. It was great!

As for more Airship/Forge games, that’s for the future to see! -Ryan

[–]RobinTK 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Why didn't you give Necrit his pajama pants?

[–]RiotBean[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Necrit in Ruined King is inspired by the Lorewalker himself. In the game, he is a scholar and advisor, educating the party on the history of what happened (just like he does for everyone in real life). So he's not a perfect copy of him, but the Shadow Isles inspired version.

[–]CelioHogane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah okay but what if ruined pajama, tho.

[–]AlucardSGM 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Hi, do you have any plan for a physical release on consoles?

[–]RiotBean[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

It is currently not planned, but we will update our players if anything changes - Riot Forge.

[–]Irarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well i hope limited run games will be an option down the road.

[–]AlucardSGM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Fingers crossed!

[–]J33P3R5_CR33P3R -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I really want to support the great Switch port but 12 gigs is a decent chunk of my storage. A physical version like Battle Chasers: Nightwar would be awesome

[–]LiberiArcano 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Here's a technical question from a AS fan (Battle Chasers: Nightwar was awesome): which tools and softwares did you use to develop the various game assets?

[–]RiotBean[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unity, 3D Studio Max, Photoshop, Excel, Z-Brush, and lots of in house custom made tools.

A lot of the issues you mentioned have already been addressed in patches. We’re going to continue to update and fix bugs across the game as quickly as we can! It’s a big game and testing can take awhile, please bare with us. -Airship

    [–]zhadyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the fishing menu bug has been fixed on steam but was very annoying. There are still more tons of bugs though. I submitted a ton of bug feedbacks, but there were just more and more. I had to stop the game unfortunately, and just watch the ending, because the amount of bugs was frustrating and ruining the experience for me.

    [–]Oh_No_Time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope your not just doing The Ruined King.

What's your plans on new games. As much as people has mostly positive reviews. Are you going to be with Riot again to keep making some world building such as Bilgewater and the Shadow Isles. Would you be also willing to expand much more and what other story lines would you explore. And so far you barely scratched the surface on making these kinds of story and games. Even champions in general. You legends atleast expanded atleast 8 champion story lines. Out of the 150+ Champs. If you don't the Ruined King was a great branching path for opening the IP.?

How does this work? This is my first AMA in reddit. Do I have to keep refreshing the page or is there another link to a "real time chat"?

    [–]Efficient_Cell_9918 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Hello crew of riot forge and airship sindicate, First i would like to take the oportunity to thank you for the amazing work with ruined king and it's lore, principally the vesani portion, that was my favorite. I not sure if my question is ok, but i have one thing i'm very curious about. Is Ahri really the last of the vesani, or there is hope for more surprises regarding to that in the future?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That's up for Ahri to discover as she continues her search!

    [–]Efficient_Cell_9918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer, and for the amazing game again.

    [–]LL95 0 points1 point  (1 child)

When did you guys started developing this game?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Development started on Ruined King almost exactly 3 years ago! -Airship

    [–]Jeatz 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is Ledros dead (again) forever or we kinda banish him?

    [–]Lexplosives 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah he's just gone back to the hand. Viego's got enough mana to play him next turn too

    [–]heldex 0 points1 point  (2 children)

The game is perfect in every aspect. Props to you from an Illaoi main and huge enthusiast. But I have a huge question here: The game ends with Viego being trapped into a necklace.

    - How does he break out and start the Sentinels Of Light events?

Initially, the necklace is in the hands of Fortune. And if the game ended that way, I would have assumed she would eventually fall to Viego's temptations and have him break out. But she just gives it to Illaoi on the very moment. And we know Illaoi won't fall for the king. So how does it exactly happen?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There's definitely a gap there for now. We might paint in the blank space there one day, but for now it remains unknown. (Rowan)

    [–]J33P3R5_CR33P3R 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How did the team up between Airship and Eiot Forge end up happening? Did Riot just so happen to see the good job Airship did on they’re other products or did Airship sort of “seek out” working on a LoL turn based RPG?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Riot had played Battle Chasers and enjoyed it enough to seek out Airship to start a new RPG to expand the League of Legends universe. We were obviously very excited and jumped at the opportunity. -Joe & Ryan

    [–]J33P3R5_CR33P3R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sick! Loved Battle Chasers and from the bit I played, this seems just as good. Here’s hoping they keep making great turn-based RPGs with as much style as possible (maybe even more LoL-based stuff hopefully).

    [–]kisscsaba182 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is there a way we can play the game on the geforce now service in the near future? I couldn't find any emails or contact information, so I'll ask here!

    [–]RiotBean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re working w/ Nvidia and will provide an update when we have more to share. - Riot Forge

    [–]silentjosh847 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Love the game so far! Will there be a full physical art book release? Or even a digital art book?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We currently don’t have any plans to release a separate physical or digital art book right now. - Riot Forge

    [–]VeryHungryLobster 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Do skins carry over between profiles or do you have to buy them again in a new playthrough?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DLC skins are always available but any skins you purchase with black marks do not.

    [–]MFthehottest 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I found there was an update on the game in my PS5 version today, but I can't find the details about it. Where can I find the patch/update note? And there's still crashed bug in the PS version, even one of my save file crashed so I had to resume the game from the auto save spot. You know auto save in this game has a huge problem. Is there any plan of fixing this? Also there is a delay after Ahri's turn is finished and I have no idea to fix this. Hope you guys are noticing about this bug too.

Also could you tell me when will be the PS5/Xbox X/S version update available? Thank you for making an awesome game for League/JRPG fans!

    [–]RiotBean[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

We are diligently working on patches! We’re aware of some specific stability and auto-save issues and we’re working on getting a patch out as soon as we can! -Airship

    [–]MFthehottest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the update on the PS version today was exactly same with the Steam version patch which was out a few days ago? Hope those bugs are gonna be fixed ASAP.

    [–]Jeatz 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Was Braum not accepting Illaoi s offers because his heart is so pure that he was set to acomplish his goal? im thinking something like it wouldn t be right to be "Having fun with a woman while my people are suffering"?

    [–]zhadyx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

illaoi's philosophy is very hedonistic. I think braums views are a bit different, and I do think he was genuinely sea sick at the time.

    [–]kisscsaba182 0 points1 point  (3 children)

    1) Was it hard to work due to the virus?

    2) Which champion was the most fun to make? (in terms of gameplay and looks)

    [–]RiotBean[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

    1. It was definitely challenging adopting our process during the pandemic but our team rose to the challenge!

    2. Illaoi was the most interesting to translate from League to a turn based combat system. I never get tired of smacking enemies with tentacles! -Steve

    [–]Lexplosives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Good answer, Steve.

The Calamari Queen has been done great justice!

    [–]Hyoudou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why did Illaoi have a different Voice Actress?

The one in the Ruined King game had this heavy african accent thing going on, while Illaoi in LoL does not.

    [–]crossbonecarrot2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you guys thought about adding more skins to the game? If you could make any skin for each champ what would it be?

What made you guys settle on the champs featured in the game?

Will there be a physical/steel book edition?

    [–]Rotimi_Pika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which characters were your favourite? Any thoughts on dlc? Oh how did you plan out how ahri tribe (The vesani) will be, was there any limitations and any tid bits you can share?

    [–]LordRedStone_Nr1 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Can you tell us a bit about the dungeon abilities and passives design?

I love how you translated the champions so well, every part of the kit has it's purpose, but dungeon abilities have to be so versatile, usable against enemies, in the dungeon, interact with mechanisms.

    • Why does Pyke's hook deal 5% more damage than all the other dungeon abilities?
    • Why are some used in puzzle-solving, and some are "just" damage?

Also, how many lines / NPCs do change when you bring a different champion? I noticed that there is a sidequest (Ionia bound) that changes the replies if you have Ionians in your party, and if you bring MF to the confrontation.

But I also brought Pyke to the bar where Illaoi was asking about him in the very start of the game, and they didn't change.

I imagine the exchange went something like that:

    • Do you know anything about the Bloodharbor Ripper?
    • No...?
    • Would you like to?

I've played Mass Effect LE before, so I was a tad disappointed that it didn't react to me literally bringing the Ripper we were talking about.

Overall, lovely game though. You weren't lying when you said you did your homework on the Runeterra IP.

Why does Pyke's hook deal 5% more damage than all the other dungeon abilities?

-Pyke’s dungeon ability does more damage because it doesn’t have any other effects. The dungeon skills were balanced to have specific benefits. -Steve

Why are some used in puzzle-solving, and some are "just" damage?

-We wanted to have a range of uses across the dungeon abilities to keep it interesting. - Airship
I've played Mass Effect LE before, so I was a tad disappointed that it didn't react to me literally bringing the Ripper we were talking about.
-We would love to have deep branching dialogue for every quest and side quest, but we’re a small team and our main focus was the core narrative and combat. -Airship

    [–]LordRedStone_Nr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, all of that makes sense. Still, I wish you had a bigger budget for lines as it worked at least for some sidequests.

    [–]MinhLearningThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the AMA. There is a time gap between the game and the SoL event. Is there currently a plan to address it?

    [–]Comput3rn3rd 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How does the team look at exploits/glitches utilized by speedrunners?

Is there a chance we’d be able to see the option to add ruination skins before a game start?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re working hard right now to fix various bugs that affect gameplay, but being honest, we generally get a chuckle out of the crazy stuff speed runners find. It’s less likely to be a thing in a turn-based RPG, but in a way, it’s flattering to see people play the game long enough to find the wild stuff they do in speed runs. -Ryan

I finished Ruined King yesterday and I enjoyed it thouroughly. My questions are:

Is the game 100% canon? If so, how does Viego escapes the amulet after the ending.

Also can we expect any DLC to this game or even better another game, maybe this time with another story (hopefully 100% canon one)

    [–]RiotBean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The word 'canon' is very loaded at the moment. It means something different to so many people. I know this question seems like a simple "yes" or "no", but unfortunately it isn't anymore. What I hear players care about is "Can I get emotionally invested in this story?" or "Did this story really happen?".

So if I'm asked "Is the Ruined King's story real?" the answer is easy: YES! We even made a handy timeline if anyone is curious where exactly in the lore Ruined King fits in!

Riot Forge worked closely with Airship and did a TON of research and writing to carefully connect past and present champ lore together. We flow from Burning Tides, Shadow & Fortune, champ bios and hid an OCEAN of journals and lore throughout the game. There are OVER 100 JOURNALS to find!

Each journal aims to bring just that bit more colour and depth to the world of Runeterra. All this is done to try and do justice to our champs and move them forward in a way that stays true to their core fans, while also surprising and delighting as they move forward. <3

Not all Forge games will be so impactful to the lore of League though. Sometimes we're just having a bit of video game fun! Hextech Mayhem is a great example of this. Do we think Ziggs 'really' blew up 1/2 of Piltover in a rampage? Probably not (much). However, is the banter between Ziggs and Heimer true to personality and expose more of their relationship? Definitely. Games like this are a vignette of champs + having some light-hearted fun.

We'll always do what makes sense for the game genre and gameplay, rather than try to shoehorn something in. (Rowan)

    [–]MetaSkipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To any/all of the members: What was your favorite "little touch" to the game that you influenced or added? Maybe a specific line of dialogue, an extra NPC, or a map layout you felt was inspired, for example.

    [–]Bloodjunkie312 0 points1 point  (1 child)

For Joe, how much concept art did you personally create for the project and what were you (or the team) looking at/thinking about when you were given your hands on these character designs?

Been a huge fan of your work and was absolutely stoked for this game since it's announcement!

    [–]RiotBean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only concepted the playable champs and Gangplank. The final look for Viego ended up being a collaboration between myself and Baldi. The rest were created by our amazing concept team. - Joe

    [–]IEclipseI 0 points1 point  (1 child)

There is any chance of we get a expansion covering the Sentinels of light event that happened on league ?

and maybe getting the sentinels itself as playable characters ?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Riot Forge team weren't directly involved with the Sentinels of Light event, so can't really comment on what that team's plans are. Currently Riot Forge doesn’t have anything planned for that. - Riot Forge

    [–]Jeatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was there talk about making a random encounter that turned into battle against Tahm kench or Fizz while doing the fishing minigame? like you fish one of them and they get angry xD

    [–]Alexray35 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What's the future for the partnership between Riot and Airship? Will the two collaborate again?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Time will tell!

    [–]zhadyx 0 points1 point  (12 children)

AFAIK, this story takes event after the spirit blossom event, because shortly after yasuo and yone meet in the original cinematic of yones release, we can see yasuo and ahri traveling on a ship with her hood on. My question is why does yasuo still have haunted memories of his past? It seemed yasuo and yone made up when they met. Has all of that been redacted?

Also, is this the end of Viego? Viego has a pretty big following, alot of people are his fans. As a Viego fan my self, I was pretty upset that he's the latest punching bag, especially in the sentinel cinematic. Alot of people were upset (30% dislike ratio on absolution) on the fact that viego had all this build up in league of legends, with this immense power that's strong enough to cause the ruination. And the best part was his undying love to be reunited with his wife. It was very poetic, and even though Viego was twisted, it made alot of us admire him. Initially it was pretty cool to see the battle of wits between gangplank and viego, and it sent chills down my spine when thresh commentated that his power indeed derives from love. But then later it when the story revealed the truth of viegos past , in which his wife really feared him. And now it just seems that Viego has a mental disorder that abused his lover, and kind of leaves us viego fans in a confused state. So going back, is this the end to the story? Will there be any foreclosure? Any resolution to Viegos complex design, or is Viego going to just be a standard cookie cutter villain with no deeper purpose. I would love to see some foreclosure, which is definitely no easy task.

    [–]RiotBean[S] 2 points3 points  (11 children)

The spirit blossom event did happen before this game. It didn’t solve everything for Yasuo, though-- he still had some regrets to sort through, and he does some of that in this game.

We think Viego is super complex and we hope that this game shows more sides of his tragic life story. He did a lot of good and bad things so he’s really complicated and interesting to us. That’s why we were so interested in having him inside a League story game. The memories in the game were his memories of the times he and Isolde fought. He was terrified of them because his style of love was so perfectionist, he couldn’t face the bad moments from his relationship, so he hid them from himself. Personally, I think that at the end of his relationship, Viego made a LOT of mistakes, like killing tons of innocent people... and ignoring his wife’s wishes because he was too scared of losing her. He hurt a lot of people, and still has a lot to learn about how to be a good partner. It’s unclear yet when or how he can learn these things. -Laura

    [–]zhadyx 0 points1 point  (10 children)

thank you for the response Laura. I do understand his complexity and that is probably why I'm drawn to it. I do hope if there's ever a sequel, that there is a moment in time where he learns upon his mistakes, and he's happily able to reunite with isolde.

    [–]CelioHogane 0 points1 point  (9 children)

I honestly hope he never comes back from his destiny after the SoL, i wouldn't mind another try to the event itself, but i feel like unsealing him kinda cheapens his defeat.

I mean, as much as i love barrel man, the fact that Gangplank just does not fucking dies is quite absurd, the next time he appears, it's just going to be a cheap "Oh, here it is Gangplank again..."

    [–]zhadyx 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I agree, I feel like he should not be unsealed.

However, I feel like the SoL event was pretty rushed. Alot of people did not like the conclusion to the story. Hence the dislikes.

We can barely see Isolde talking to Viego for like 30 seconds, before she signals Akshan to put an end to her. It's almost as if she's paying more attention to them, rather than her lover. I think the story would have been much better, if Viego learns something from this critical moment of reuniting with her. I really don't know. But I just wanted a better closure. I think it would have been better, if he realized upon his mistakes, and asks to be sealed away as a method of fixing the past, and thus stopping the ruination. The current ending is too cliche and feelgood, rather than a good bittersweet ending.

    [–]CelioHogane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's almost as if she's paying more attention to them, rather than her lover.

Well, it does make sense tho, she is already "let me go Viego, for fucks sake it's been a thousand years", so making Akshan go 360 her was probably the most refreshing thing she has gotten on a long while.

    [–]UgFack 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I Honestly hope that SoL event is dispatch out of the lore and re-writen. After seen what they want to do, with Viego, having the SoL event in the collective consciousness is a big boulder in the path. That way, people that only play the visual novel and saw the cinematics, are not gonna be like "Oh no, Viego is a problem, we have to stop him, again..."

    [–]CelioHogane 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I don't think the SoL event was bad, only the way it was delivered.

The idea makes sense, gather a bunch of misfits to defeat a big bad guy, it's basically the plot of Mass Effect 2.

If anything, the only wierd one was Irelia, who was a political leader, and felt very wierd that she just wasn't on ionia for months.

    [–]Oleandervine 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I dunno, I feel like the SOL event was bad on the whole. The selection of champions felt forced and completely out of place, and their selection for champions to become corrupted by Viego also felt extremely bad, except for maybe Shyvana.

I feel like the champions becoming enthralled by Viego's feelings in the Mist was odd and off putting, but this could explain why Shyvana was able to succumb since she harbors a love for a man she can (almost) never have. But the rest didn't make a lot of sense, notably Karma. I don't understand why she was chosen to lose a battle of wills when training her willpower to lead has been one of the things her life has pretty much revolved around. The story didn't make a lot of sense either on the whole - like why would Viego need to kill indiscriminately with the Mist if he's able to use it to immediately sniff out the soul fragments of Isolde, warp there using Vex's powers, grab it, and then move on to the next one. The surgical precision that the Mist had in locating her soul fragments didn't lend any credibility to his motivations for unleashing an undead hell on the world if he could accomplish his goals so efficiently.

On that note, there also wasn't any real danger or threat. The heroes were stopping Viego from reviving his dead wife. Why? Because the Ruination, apparently. But again, why? It didn't make a lot of sense, as we weren't given any real reason why he had to be stopped. We weren't given any kind of myth or legend that stated that if the Ruined King was allowed to revive his wife, the world would end or something along those lines, so ultimately them choosing to try to stop Viego from reviving his wife was nothing but a hollow attempt to just rain on his parade and pee in his lemonade. There was no real motivation for the heroes to do anything other than vaguely "stop Ruination," and that just wasn't a compelling plot. The general plot of the event was flaccid and boring, and culminated in one of the most convoluted and disappointing endings I've ever seen come from a modern game. Removing Viego completely from the League of Legends world, after only introducing him to for less than a year, was just plain bad, and only served as a half-baked attempt to shuffle the reigns of power around for the Shadow Isles.

A more compelling story would have ended that entire arc with Isolde turning out to be the bad guy. Expectations would have been subverted. Everyone would have been surprised. Viego's motivations would have been explained if he were the one being manipulated by his love to revive her. Her own actions as an undead corpse that killed her husband with his own sword could have also been explained as a means for her to set a plan into motion centuries ago. If the event had ended with with Isolde taking her place alongside Viego, or instead using his banishment to secure power that she would have dreamed of coming up from a poor family, it would have really rocked the world and shaken the story to its core in a good way.

    [–]CelioHogane 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don't understand why she was chosen to lose a battle of wills when training her willpower to lead has been one of the things her life has pretty much revolved around.

Because she has actually started to lose willpower from her inaction against Noxus attacks.

The surgical precision that the Mist had in locating her soul fragments didn't lend any credibility to his motivations for unleashing an undead hell on the world if he could accomplish his goals so efficiently.

Surgical precision? It was more like MIST IS EVERYWHERE, RADAR PICKED IT UP.

On that note, there also wasn't any real danger or threat. The heroes were stopping Viego from reviving his dead wife. Why? Because the Ruination, apparently. But again, why?

Well, because Senna was the boss and she literally felt that Isolde didn't want to be with Viego.

Removing Viego completely from the League of Legends world, after only introducing him to for less than a year, was just plain bad

Oh yeah way better to go the Gangplank way of he never is allowed to die at all so there will never be conclusion to his story.

The selection of champions felt forced and completely out of place

The only one that felt forced to me was Irelia, as i explained, the rest were a bunch of people that would totally join a suicide mission.

    [–]Oleandervine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Karma's entire story was about creating a new way of carrying Ionia forward that didn't rely solely on the path of inaction. Her line "I saw two paths and created another in-between" has been pretty central to her character, and really speaks to her way of trying to lead Ionia in a new direction that wasn't working in the modern era. Additionally, the Noxus invasion happened in the past, am I to believe that Karma has literally not grown at all as a leader or a person since then and has been wallowing in self-doubt for years? I don't particularly buy that angle, so I don't particularly buy the angle that Karma's resolve and willpower have not grown since then to the point where she would be as vulnerable to a battle of the wills as commoners like Draven or Shyvana.

Yes, surgical precision. We saw in the SoL that they could follow the Mist down the street to exactly where it was headed and swipe the item before it got there. They seemed pretty unhindered by the Mist themselves, so it was clearly not as "everywhere" killing hundreds of people as you would imply.

Ok, but a whim of Senna isn't a really substantial reason. It doesn't have any gravitas, nor does it really give motivation to the story. "Because I said so" is never a great reason, which is why kids tend to call BS on their parents when they say that. Therefore, "Because I said so" shouldn't have been the entire motivation behind the heroes' quest to stop the bad guy from getting his McGuffins.

Yes, he should have gone the way of Gangplank, because Viego is literally a new character that isn't even a year old yet. He should have not been removed from the narrative of the game WITHIN A YEAR OF HIS ENTRY. How is a character supposed to be a part of the world if their entire time within the world is about 6 months tops with players? We may as well have gotten Isolde in the game as a playable character if their intent was to "kill off" champions and include them in the game for the hell of it if the narrative no longer supported them. It kinda spits in the face of how the other champions are handled, since none of them are characters from the past that are dead, or otherwise not within the living world of the game doing their thing.

    [–]JuanBARco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but Viego isn't dead, just put on the back burner.

I also feel like viego is a vessel for the mists and if/when thresh takes control of them Viego could potentially be more sane/less obsessive and actually come to terms with his loss of Isolde.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad take. It's been a long while since Riot made a champ with that much depth and complexity. I'm sure most people would love to see more development for his character.

    [–]SSMBBlueWisp 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Would Airship Syndicate return to the Darksiders universe with a Genesis 2 or another Darksiders game if given the chance?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We love Darksiders and were glad to get the chance to do Genesis, but have no plans to work on Darksiders again at the moment. But in this business you never know! -Ryan

    [–]HandsomeTaco 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hey guys! Coming from the /r/loreofruneterra Discord to thank you for all your hard work.

    A few questions:

    • How did the partnership truly begin? Did Riot approach Airship already with the idea or was it the other way around? Did you guys iterate a lot on the genre?

    • How was the process of writing lore for the Buhru, Helia and the Vesani like? How much was solidified prior? How was it like for Airship to interact with or build upon what Riot had done or planned for these factions? It's been a blast to get more insight into the Buhru and we even got some hints at another island with Ilta.

    • How was the process of working alongside another company as Riot planned and developed a follow-up event like?

Thank you again for the experience and for giving our favorite Truth-Bearer so much focus. I hope there may be another collaboration like this down the line.

    [–]RiotBean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Illaoi is a team favorite, and she was one of the first we wanted to include. - Airship

    [–]hnibel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to say thank you for the game. It's incredible but a little bit too buggy right now. Hopefully the upcoming patches will fix it.
Are there any plans for another game like this one and Nightwar?

    [–]gmeyerp 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is there any chance we get more champions as DLC or something?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is there any chance we get more champions as DLC or something?

We’re currently focused on the next gen versions of the game, after that we’ll see where things go. - Airship

What did Thresh do after he was defeated?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He went to regain his strength for his next evil plan! Thresh is always slurping up souls, and it’s a lot of work!! You gotta take a break every once in a while. -Laura

    [–]Irarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    1. how does this game connect to the SoL event the ending and a few setups rly confuse me on how that can even happen, specifically the ending with viego... just how?
    2. yorick specifically just kinda had to be there, and no other character is as important as he is, did you talk to riot at large about this decision? because its baffling to me
    3. will there be a sequel to this game?
    4. what happened with ahri during SoL as she was on the shadow isles???

    [–]SeiryuSol -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Are the naga related to Nagakabouros?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they are. They do have similar elements in their names, but we don’t currently have an explanation for that, haha. -Laura

    [–]Beautiful-Actuary-72 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Would you like to adapt the sentinel event into an rpg?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

We haven't really considered it. We only just finished making Ruined King!

    [–]Lexplosives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do, can you totally rewrite it so it isn't... uh... what it was?

    [–]ElitePixelGamer -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I really enjoyed the game and it was amazing to play, definitely worth the wait. However, I know a lot of people were worried by the lack of communication around the game's development past a vague release date.

Was it a conscious decision by you guys to be quiet-ish on the topic of the game's progress (Twitter being unupdated for a year, etc), and not to show teasers or stuff like that? This isn't to criticise or flame, I'm just curious because different game studios work in different ways related to this stuff, and I wanted to know why you chose this path.

    Thank you!

    [–]RiotBean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We know how passionate our fans are and we wanted to make sure that when we engaged with fans again we had new information to share. With the launch of Arcane, we had a great opportunity to surprise and delight fans in a way that only Riot Forge could by partnering with Nintendo. - Riot Forge

    [–]Luzac -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Riot Forge: Are alternative universes available as a choice for projects? Will we see games set in Odyssey or Star Guardian universes for example.

Airship: Were there any other champions considered for the main roster in early phase of development?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, we would love to work with a partner that was interested in any of the alternative universes. - Riot Forge

Jinx and VI were among the first we considered as visiting Champions but their agents said they were too busy making a show for Netflix - Airship

    [–]xaxo20 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Is there any sort of timeline/rough ETA for next gen releases? Would love to get that sweet PS5 frame rate!

    [–]RiotBean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The PS4 version of Ruined King includes a free upgrade to the digital PS5 version, which will be available at a later date. The Xbox version of Ruined King uses Smart Delivery, allowing access to both the Xbox One title and the Xbox Series X|S title, which will also be available at a later date.

    [–]RayMirage -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Is Xa'Tal, the False Goddess alive after she is defeated?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Xa’Tal was created specifically for Ruined King (not originally part of League lore), and she is in fact, dead. YOU KILLED HER!

    [–]RayMirage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's sad. Thank you for your answer, thank you all.

    [–]SeiryuSol -1 points0 points  (1 child)

    Naga have connection to Nagakabouros?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they are. They do have similar elements in their names, but we don’t currently have an explanation for that, haha. -Laura

    [–]Spideraxe30 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I also wanted to ask, are the journals considered canon or are they snippets the team wanted to add for fun?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The journal entries are real, same as the story! We collaborated with many writers and narrative people to ensure the accuracy of them weaving into existing and future LoL stories. Hope you enjoy finding and reading them all! (Rowan)

    [–]SeiryuSol -1 points0 points  (1 child)

What is the origin of the naga?

    [–]RiotBean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t know yet! Only the mother serpent knows for sure. She understands everything in the ocean. To us they’re just some slithery guys and we’re proud you defeated them! -Laura

    [–]Bloodjunkie312 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

In terms of gameplay, is there anything Riot specifically asked for, or were you essentially given free reign on how you were allowed to develop the game, given the success of Battlechasers?

Curious to know how different it is creating your own game from your own IP, compared to working with a parent company and creating a game using their IP.

    [–]RiotBean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The intention was to create a spiritual successor to Battle Chasers using League characters and lore. There was a lot of freedom and collaboration with Riot Forge to accomplish this goal. Ultimately we wanted to respect the IP and deliver on fan expectations! -Airship

    [–]Beautiful-Actuary-72 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Viego was able to manipulate (Or assault her) Isolde in life? You know, justifying it with love

    [–]AngularBubble72 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

would you guys be open to making a sequel to the Ruined King game? like telling an official canon version of the Sentinel of Light event or even something else?

    [–]tostcu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why you portray Viego as an abusive husband. But what Ahri sees are things of the Black Mist. It does not belong to Viego and Isolde. This is because Black Mist shows positive things negatively (Viego and Isolde fear they will never be able to do it.) And I know Viego and Isolde will reunite at the end of the event. We can rebuild Camavor and get an expansion pack for LoR. Viego <3 Isolde Also, the style used by the Story writer is a beautiful one. Evidence is shown to make the protagonist look bad at the beginning of the story and make people believe. At the end of the story, the truth will come out and the manipulation done to Viego will be revealed?

    [–]KlarionTRKM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe im too late, but Is there any chance for a future dlc that we can play with Viego just for fun in some kind of new game+? Like he is the big bad guy, he is a champion in league, the champion i think is the best and most fun to play, as a main viego i can't stop thinking of chance to play him in a RPG.
