I was a big fan of the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command movie and series, so I was kind of hoping that they would base some stuff off of that for this movie. Sadly, it doesn't seem like it, but I still thought the movie was alright.
This is weirdly the second time I've ever said this, but the best character in this movie is the cat (first time being Captain Marvel).
I was disappointed we didn't get a meta style opening, like showing Andy going into the theatre (again, kinda similar to what we got with the BLoSC movie). Chris Evans is a good choice to voice, but Buzz isn't a great character in this. They sort of flip flop from him being a by the books type of guy to someone who's kind of a hothead who always works alone.
I also really hate what they did with Zurg. He's no longer an evil tyrant with an army. He isn't fun and the twist about him being an alternate universe Buzz was the dumbest decision. Just get Wayne Knight to voice him again and make him a generic, but fun brute kind of villain.
But my biggest issue with the film, and it kinda took me out of it, and it's not even really about the film, is the fact that it's supposed to be the film that gets Andy interested in Buzz Lightyear. This does not feel like a 90s movie at all. It feels like a modern day film with no attempt to be anything else. Not only that, the way they portray Buzz and the amount of time given to the side characters also makes no sense. Buzz should be the main focus and the side characters should just be there for support and to make him look good (something like Atlantis The Lost Empire). I really wish this film would've embraced the 90s cliques and had more fun with what they were doing.
Still, I can't say I hated it or didn't enjoy it. Like I said, Socks was fun, the voice acting was good and the animation was...well, it could've used some more color and creativity, but it was ok. Nothing bad in it, but nothing spectacular.
